Speaker 1 (00:00):
The cricket field to the cow shed. It's the Country
Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
We're talking cricket now. And in the wake of this
series defeat in Sri Lanka, Tim Salvey has announced that
he's stepping down as Black Caps Test captain. Tom Lason's
going to take over. Brian Model joins us this Morning
Voice and you deal on Cricket Morning Words.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Not really a surprise, I suppose, but you know it's
a reaction to a poor performance and starts a new
career of captaincy. I suppose you.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Were you surprised that he actually ended up being the captain.
I mean Tom Latham was also in the picture, really,
wasn't he.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Yeah, well, I mean there's been problems around selection of
captaincy for some time since Daniel Vettori was the captain.
You know, when it was Ross Taylor was appointed in
a rather strange manner when they both had to pitch
for the job. And then the part that was forward
with McCallum took over and Saudi was in that and

(01:03):
part of all that sort of situation, and you know
he's finally as a senior player. But it's only been
a makeshif part time role. He was never there. I
don't think for the full length of an area where
New Zealand as a weakness. What we really need as
a captain whose forth right is adventurous the way McCallum was.

(01:26):
And you know, it's a chance now for Tom Latham
to take on the mantle of a leader and put
his experience addability to the job of leading. He did
lead the side in Australia if you remember back in
twenty nineteen that three tiesth series we had over there,
and there was an argument about Saudi who was put

(01:47):
on the bench and was expected to be captain when
Williamson didn't take the field. But it was Saudi who
sat on the bench and Lathan was made the captain.
So you know he's been around there. You've been part
of the leadership group, which is the way they talk
in terms of the critical moment. You know we've got
strong leaders. Well it's time that the captain took control

(02:11):
and started to show some forthright policies.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
AT's all very well having strong leaders who want strong
players though giving us strong results, don't.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
We Yeah, but I'm not surprised at the performance in
Srilanka to some extent, but I think we've got those players.
They're starting to develop. We've got to Ravender, Who've got Williamson.
We've got to get better out of Conway later and
starting to show that he's getting into some form. And
I think we've got some bowlers, provided the right ones

(02:40):
are chosen for the right games. And my question about
the tour of Sri Lanka was the use of those
players where people turned the ball sharply, players like braceball
were omitted when Phillips was there doing much the same
sort of thing, and yet Ajs Mattel and said weren't

(03:00):
able to turn the ball as sharply as the Sri
Lankan spinners. So you know there's the mixed there of players.
It's just a matter of the right selections.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Tom Latham, as you said, as we said, it's going
to take charge of the team as they head to
India next Friday. And then he has captained the squad before.
Will he be a good captain?

Speaker 1 (03:21):
It's hard to know. He's done a good job within
the squad.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Is it?

Speaker 1 (03:24):
Fairly quiet sort of person. He's not an out there player,
but I think he understands the game and we'll be
able to provide the kind of leadership that the side needs.
I think they need some consistency, some continuity about what
they've been doing. That's been the key to the Zealand's
performances in the past, consistency and continuity, and they're going

(03:48):
to get that out. I don't know whether Saudi will
be in the site the you know, it seems as
though he wants to continue, but he will just have
to take his chances along with the other players, and
he could go away as a senior member of the
bowling leadership group and provide the sort of mentorship that

(04:10):
the new young bowlers need. Hard to know they'll be
naming the team I think on Friday, is what I've
been told. So this has just come out of the blue.
And I'm sure that Gary Stead knew this well before
there's tours over, he'd probably had discussions with Saudi.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Carry on. Well, I was quite surprised that the team
actually you're returning home before heading back to India after
the SriLankan series.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Well, that's a surprise to me. I did the numbers
and I think there's what sixteen days I think before
the Indians actually had to start to play the bills
that probably less than they're probably ten days because once
they get into India, the home side has to pay

(04:59):
all the and so New Zealand would probably have needed
ten days of paying accommodation. What the cost of taking
a whole team business class to that part of the
world is about two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, you know,
ten thousand dollars for each player, and between twenty two

(05:21):
and twenty five, you know, he got fifteen players, but
you've got all the hangers on carrying the bags and
handing out the boarding passes, and that comes to about
two hundred and fifty thousand. So they've come home to that,
and there's another two hundred and fifty thousand to get
to India and back, plus the accommodation which would be

(05:41):
if they'd stayed over there. You know, I worked out
conservatively that would be ninety to one hundred thousand, So
you know, that's probably a bit cheaper than setting up
a new group of airpeas, but you know that's not
my decision. That's what the cricket administrators have to do.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Being a former aan Z bank, are you very good
with the numbers.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
I know that one.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Brian and India aren't going to be an easy ask either,
are they. I mean there are eight points at the
top of the Cricket World Test Championship now with their
fine performance recently.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Oh yeah, and they showed on the fourth day that
Test match against Vangadesh what they're capable of. They better
for thirty four overs, scored two hundred and eighty five
but got to fifty ufter three overs three overs. And
that's Roa Charma and Asois the opening pair, and they
are going to be pretty demanding on our bowlers, followed

(06:35):
by the likes of Koli, I've got the Shipman and Gill,
I've got Rahu you know, and had a bowling attack
to die for led by Jasprit Boomra. So you know,
Tom Latham is going to be leading asidea that's going
to be hard pressed in conditions that are pretty similar
to what they add in Sri Lanka. It is not

(06:58):
an easy place to tour. We wish of all the
best that we do.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Indeed, hey, what thanks for joining us this morning and
giving us all those numbers. Well done. I'm impressed to
be God.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
It's going on on the holiday. I can arrangement for it,
Thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
