Talking their NRL Grand Final. Now on the show, where
Penrith Panthers look to win their fourth straight premiership. Sunday night,
they face off against the Melbourne Storm. Joining us on
the CSP this morning. Out of the Daily and Sunday telegraphers,
Michael Carrianis Michael, good.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Morning, Good morning, Brian. How are you going?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Oh very well, thank you. We've got to the sharp
end of the competition, haven't we.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Yeah, we have, and you know it's probably the Grand
Final the competition deserves in terms of the two bad
sides clearly the two best sides throughout this year get
to square off in the big one.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Yeah. Fifth straight Grand Final for Penrith, going for their
fourth straight title. Why have the Penrith Panthers had so
much success for so long?
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Ah? Well, easy, there is the talent and the fact
that they've been able to keep a nucleus of that
side together. Obviously they've lost lots of players along the way,
but the big thing is the hunger. You know, we've
seen talented side to you know, win one premiership. We
saw the Roosters win two premierships in a row and
for so long that was the big thing. That was
a big mountain climb, is two Grand finals and you know,
(01:22):
hadn't been done in a full competition since ninety two
to ninety three before the Roosters did it a few
years back. Now we've got a side going for four
in a row. So it's just a hunger, there's no
doubt about that. The talent is obviously there and that's
the natural thing that we all see. But it's the
hunger for these guys to keep going.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
And the ivan clear he affect as well. You'd better
mention him.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Oh yeah, he sort of flies under the radar a
little bit, a little bit under appreciated island, but no doubt,
and you know he's had such an interesting coaching career.
Obviously had success at the Warriors and then you know
Mike success during his first in at Penrith, ended up
getting sacked and went to the Tigers and then hopped
off the bus as we all know, and then headed
back to the Panthers and in his first year there,
(02:06):
you know, the joint was in the verge of imploded.
It was so bad. It was such a tough experience.
And now you know, he finds himself on the cusp of,
you know, arguably becoming you know, that top echelon of
coach when you know, you start having conversations if they
did with another Grand final in a row, you start
having these conversations around Bellamy and Bennett and those sort
(02:32):
of guys. Clearly sits alongside them if he can lead
his side to another Grand Final.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
And his son Nathan took a knock to his shoulder
last week in the win against the Shark, So how's
he looking for the decider?
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Yeah, it's been an ongoing issue for Nathan. You know,
he missed a fair bit of footy, only returned in
that in that first week of the finals for Tenerius,
had the week off and then played in the prelim again,
and like it's just a ticket time bomb, right, So
shoulder that dislocates, which means he could play another twenty
games and be fine, or he could play another you know,
(03:06):
in the first tackle of the Grand Final and it
pops out and he's in all sorts right, So it's
one of those ones where it's not totally restrictive in
terms of his ability to play, but it does come
with higher risk. But you know, with the player like
Nathan Cleary, you know you've got to risk it.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
On the other side of the park, the Craig Bellamy coach,
Melboyne Storm and Todentally. Craig Bellamy turns sixty five today,
the last team to beat the Panthers in the in
the Grand Final back in tweety twenty. One of the
most successful clubs in the in the trans Testament sport
in the last twenty years. How have they found such
consistent success as well? Do you think?
Speaker 3 (03:44):
Yeah, Craig Bellamy is a genius. He's been doing it
for you know, two decades now. And the thing about
the Storm is they've never dipped. They've always been there thereabouts.
And you know they had such great players a few
years ago, but you look at their one, six, seven
nine now and it's the best combination in the game.
There's no doubt about that. They've got the best spine
(04:04):
in the competition. And then you know they've been able
to compliment that with some really good signers and Sean
Blall and Elie Gatoa and in the past couple of
seasons and you know, Josh King has gone from you know,
an average first grader at Newcastle, you know, in and
out of first grade. It has been sensational, starting as
a prop for the Storm. So they just find a
way to re invigorate these people's careers and get the
(04:29):
best out of them.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Big news for the week this week that the Storm
and Kiwi hardman Nelson the Sofa Solomona has been ruled
out for that high shot last week, So how will
they fix that mess of gap?
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Yeah, it's huge. It's more like Nelson's presence, I guess.
It's such an imposing figure on the field and you
you know, on a defensive line, if you look up
and you see Nelson, you go, ok, well, I don't
really want to run there. You know, it's such a
big man, but kind of commethabile start. Christian Welsh hasn't
played a lot of minutes over the past couple of weeks,
but he'll get an opportunity, I'm sure with it with
a little bit more game time in terms of the
(05:03):
bench rotation.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
So those who was a fair bit with Nelson not
there though any chance in the future and this is
a request from Kiwi fans really that the Grand Final
number one could be moved to Saturday and also a
little bit early because I think it's about ten o'clock
New Zealand Times Sunday night for kickoff here.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Yeah I know, well, trust me it'd be good. I
was a little bit earlier for us too on newspaper deadlines.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
So who do you think is going to win this one?
Speaker 3 (05:29):
It's a tough one. I'm tip in the Panthers. But
it's been the tightest Grand Final I think for Penrith
in terms of the matchup on paper since that, you know,
the last one they lost, which was to the Storm.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Yeah, fantastic. Michael Hey, thank you for joining us at
Enjoy the game on Sunday night.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Pleasure. Thank you,
