Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the cricket field to the cow shed.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.
A time to go sailing now and you would have
heard in the news today the Britannia, the British team
are on the verge of the America's Cup match race
series for the first time in sixty years, the Louis
Vaton Cup, after twice beating Luna Rossa in the Challenger
Series final. Overnight, the scores were tied at four all

(00:25):
going into the fifth full days racing and Britannia went
six to four ahead. After four dead lockdays in Barcelona,
one more British victory, we'll clinch the Louis Vuitton Cup
for the Brits. Joining us on the show this morning,
a man who's there been watching the action, sailing pundit
and world class sailor himself, Christal.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Morning, Chris Morning.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Brian Good made a very very exciting day on the
waters in Barcelona.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Yeah, I'm exciting in the sense that the stalemate's been broken.
As he said, the two teams have been going backwards
and forwards, you know, three days now with have won
one race each each day. But the Brits came out
today and put two points on the board and more
importantly put them on.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Match point now to make it through.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
So it just means that the backs are up against
the walls for the Italians. And I think all Keys
will expect Jimmy Spittle to do what he does and
to come out swinging. But yeah, it's a tough spot
because he can't afford to make any mistakes from here, and.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
And Luna Ross has made a couple of mistakes in
the past couple of days. Really that nose dive yesterday
was a big one, wasn't it.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Yeah, the nose dive yesterday in a race that they
were leading, and they had you know, actually had a
few year sort of failures before that with the foil.
So I mean that race in particular, I put my
finger on and think was one that I should have
won because they looked they looked fast yesterday and those
conditions and even with a slightly compromised boat in that

(01:58):
second race, they were able to still show good signs
of speed. So they'll be ruing that miss opportunity. Then
obviously the day prior to that, the two boats were
out there and the windom that was above the sort
of the top end, and they sat out there for
two hours, and then when they finally were about to
go racing, the Italians broke a bunch of their bads

(02:19):
and the main sail and had to pull out of
the race. So they literally handed the points straight to
the Brits without even having to get off the start line.
So those are two pretty key race losses that were
on the board for the Brits. But no one can
take away from from what any Escratannity did today. You know,
They're won two two races clean here and square, and they.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Looked good doing it.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
So it's yeah, like I said, back against the wall
now for the Italians, and they just can't afford, you know,
any gear failures, They can't afford any mistakes on the
race course otherwise, Yet it'll come back to bite them.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
These boats are racing on the age and Britannia wasn't
without its issues today. I believe that they when they
were leading in one of the races, actually lost their rudder.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Yeah, well, I mean that's a that's a common sort
of term that.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
These guys use. That they didn't actually lose the rudder.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
In the sense that you know, most people would think
they just mean the flow that is attached to the
rudder and the control, so you know, it's it's a
term that you know, basically, you start skipping sideways, you
lose the flow on your rudder and you actually can't
steer for a for a couple of seconds here until
you get the grip back. So that usually costs you
a bit of delta. But yeah, they that's quite common

(03:35):
in those conditions. It was a it was a different
sea stake today. It was sort of breeze, a reasonable
sort of wind strength, but the waves are coming from
a sort of more of a side on angle and
it made the control of.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
These boats very, very difficult.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
And and you know, the Brits just did a slightly
better job of sailing their boat and those conditions around
the racetrack and and yeah, put two good ones.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
On the board.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
The Brits have been trying to win the America's Cup
since basically eighteen fifty one when it was up for grabs.
They lost it then and they've never really been able
to get the thing back. So why has it taken
so long for Britain to get right back on top
so to speak?

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Well, I mean, if you look at the history of
the America's Cup in general, I mean, certainly in my lifetime,
there's only really been a couple of teams that have
you know, sort of been in the fold, you know,
since like two thousand it was it was a Lingy
Oracle and you know tem New Zellan obviously, So those
are the only three teams that have kind of held

(04:39):
the Cup in the last twenty twenty years.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
So it's not just the Brits that have struggled. It's
just such.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
A such a unique sporting event because you know, the
winner or the defenders as they call it, they get
to make the new set of rules for the next cycle,
and the rules are always stamped in a way to
make it harder for challenging teams to win it back
off you. So yeah, it's not just the Brits, but
I mean the Brits haven't competed in every America's Cup

(05:07):
since then. So a big part of I think why
there's such a strong challenges time around, So it's going
to a plane going overheads, I think of bo Helen, we
agree one and such a strong challenges time around as
they've had the backing of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the
Nurse brand and has as funding for the last two

(05:30):
campaigns now and and I think in the America's Cup,
you know, money certainly goes a long way to development,
and you know are R and D progress, So that's
what you're seeing out here. They remember in the Auk
of New Zealand, they were struggling, looked like they were
going to be dead donkey, and they managed to turn
that around. And and I guess they've just picked up

(05:51):
on that momental and carried it forward to to Barcelona
this time around.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
So heading into Reserve Day tomorrow, what will the Italians
need to do now to get back into this series?
There's just one loss of one race away from losing
it completely.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Yeah, I mean, I guess two ways you can look
at it.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
There's there's the racing that's already been, and then there's
the racing that's what's going to come. So I don't
think they'll spend too much time focusing on the racing
that's been.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Because you know those points that are done, Like, yes,
there's some lessons that you can take out of it,
and and that'll mainly be sort of race technics and
start starting technics.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
But you know Friday, which is you know, the day
after tomorrow, is is going to look at it's looking
currently like it's a lot lighter, so those conditions will
be completely different.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
They'll be looking to try and.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
Optimize their vote for a low win range, and honestly
it could go I agree, easily go to two races
to the Italians and then we're at six all and
a one race want to take all finals.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
So I mean, I.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Would say Jimmy's mentality will He'll be getting the boys
together and the team there and saying nothing's changed for us,
still have to get the seven points.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
That's no different to so what it's ever been.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
But yeah, like I said that, the big big thing
now as the freature comes on, because they really can't
afford a mistake, certainly nothing to do with failure or
anything like that.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
And of course Team New Zealand will be watching on shore,
just you know, seeing it all unfold, taking notes. I
believe they've made their boat even faster for the Challenger Series.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Yeah, definitely, I mean, we'll certainly when they plan their campaign,
they will look at it in a solid period of
time in between the preliminary Gata which they competed and
in the America's company, and that period itself will be
you know, he heavily designed to improve the boat.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
They'll have for a while that we haven't seen.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
You know, they'll be optimizing their boat for what they
believe the conditions are going to be during that period.
And you know, they have been on the water every
day that I've been out there in the last set
of four or five days on the racecourse before those
two guys, you know, idiots and the Italians actually on
the course. So what they'll do there is they'll sail
around the racetrack and log data, check their speeds and

(08:13):
their angles and get all this sort of information. And
then they get off the race course when it's time
for the Italians and the Brits the race, and they'll
compare their data to all the information they're getting out
of the race technics and the on board broadcast, so
they'll have an idea where their boat lines up before
they take get out there, but none of us. So's

(08:36):
that's the intriguing part about the America discussions. And we
don't know who's gonna be faster until they line up
on day one.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
Absolutely Chris, enjoy your day off mate. Thank you for
joining us this morning. Have a good one, Thanks you much.
That's Chris Stile out of Barcelona. It really is just
watching the action. It really is sort of Formula one
on water.
