Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's gum boots or rugby boots.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
The Country Sport Breakfast has your covered on Gold Sport,
your home of live commentary. Yeah, we love our basketball
here on the Country Sport Breakfast, and tonight the third
season of the Taihi League tips off. The Queens are
hosting the hoy Hole out of potterd A, joining us

(00:24):
out of Sky Sport to look at the season ahead.
Justin Nelson morning.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Justin, very good morning, Thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Oh, absolutely pleasure mate. You'll be excited. Third installment of
the competition, and it continues to go from strength to strength,
doesn't it.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
It does. Really looking forward to it heading out there
tonight to call the game and you know, just lots
of great players Kiwis and international, some real superstars and
from all reports on the verge of a sellout tonight
as well. And so it's really exciting.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yeah, that's great. So the Queens, as asaid, tipping off
the season when they host the Southern hoy Ho at
Potter Stellar Beck med Queens fresh off was it three
game trip to China took us through what they were
doing over there.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
Justin Yeah, really quick trip. They received an invitation to
head over for as tournament against some really action, high
level pack teams from Asia, from China and also from Korea,
and yeah, great opportunity, just a lot of fun and
on the world stage, which is what basketball is all about.

(01:29):
It's a global sport and the opportunity to spread your
wings and travel and play is always there for these players.
And three games in about five or six days, and
they really rotated their team and came away with a
couple of wins and a lifelong experience. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Absolutely, in a great way to kick off their tournament.
Their chances in the championship. They're talking about the defending champions,
the Northern cahu Are they the team still to beat
again this year?

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Justin I think they start as favorite. So I think
once you've a title and you're coming off that and
you've recruited well again and you know you've got some
star players back together, I think your start favorites, but
everybody is chasing and everybody is better, you know. I
think right across the competition, the five squads look legit.
I mean even tonight the Queens will go in without

(02:19):
their star w NBA recruit Jordan Horst, and she doesn't
touch down in New Zealand until next week and the
hoyhor are at full strength and I really like their team.
They may cause a bit of an upset tonight. I
think it's going to be a close one. But I
think you are right right now everybody will be chasing
the car who first up new.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Time of year for the competition too. Took us through
the move to the to the end of the calendar year.
Why why has that happened?

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Yeah, it is a couple of reasons. One is a
little bit more available airtime and media time, and there's
not a lot of sport on around New Zealand just now,
certainly not like there is in the middle of winter,
so the opportunity to shine a little bit. And you know,
when you talking twenty five international players and thirty five
of our top kiweis they deserve some attention and they're

(03:06):
certainly getting it. We haven't tipped off yet and the
media coverage has been awesome, so that has certainly been
a big tick. And the other one is just player availability.
I mean, some of the best players around the world
are available at this time of the year, especially out
of the United States. Six WNBA players or WNBA connected
players are here again. And as I mentioned earlier, Jordan Horston,

(03:26):
seventy six game player, current player with the Seattle Storm,
has just come off a wonderful season. She's twenty three
years of age and she's about to touch down in
New Zealand. I mean that's just awesome.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Yeah, that's exciting for the competition. So, as you mentioned
five teams, can you see expansion teams coming in in
the future years? I mean, how many teams would you
like to see in the competition?

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Yeah, it's part of the plan. You know. There has
been a little bit of talk and hopefully some more
talk in the future about an Indian back team participating
from as early as twenty twenty five. I've so watch
this space. That would take the competition to six. I
think the optimum number is probably no more than eight.
But one thing this competition has done and done really

(04:10):
really well from day one is just step by step.
You know, it's a bit of a process build a business.
It's an entertainment business. You don't need to do it
all at once. You need to build it the right way,
and I think tell you he is definitely doing that.
So expansion is on the horizon, but we'll take it
as it comes, and I'm sure the league will continue
to grow with the depth of talent coming through New

(04:30):
Zealand basketball.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah, fantastic. So it starts tonight and then Sunday, the
twenty second of December, just before Christmas, will be the
Grand Final. Who do you think is going to be
hoisting the trophy in the air then, Justin.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
It's a great question, and we all sound like we
know what we're talking about before one game's been played.
I think if everyone's fit and healthy and gets through
the season and it is a quick season twelve weeks,
I mean it is action pack. I think the best
two teams will be the carho and the Queens once again.
And if they go to the Big Dance on December
twenty two, that's three straight Grand finals for these through there,

(05:03):
one to one over the last two seasons. Let's see
what happens in season number three.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Absolutely, Justin, Hey, thank you for joining us this morning, mate,
go well.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
Always a pleasure.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
Thank you, Justin Nelson. The Toehe League tipping off tonight.
It's going to be absolutely brilliant
