From the rugby field to the rotary shed.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.
We're talking Buddings NPC now on the show where we
have found our top eight Wellington and host Counties Menocal
Friday night, then the Bay of Plinnie, Steamers and Hawks
Bay from Battle to Bays on Saturday afternoon for the
Taranga the main kickoff five past two for that one.
Then Saturday night Taranaki Waikato and Sunday afternoon Tasman Canterbury

(00:26):
joining us out of Skysport. Rugby commentator extraorda there, Tata
Johnson TJ.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Good morning mate, morning BK.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Right before we look at the quarter finals, you were
on the core for the Tasman Taranaki game yesterday and
the shield has a new home for the summer. What
did you make of that one?

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Oh, we Taranaki were too good. You know, I get
the feeling they are just hitting their straps at the
right time. Chasman. You know, it was probably a little
unfortunate for them that they got that game at the
end of their storm week. I'm you know, we have
to have one. I'm not quite sure why we have
to have storm weeks. Why the thing couldn't go for

(01:05):
another week, I don't know, but you know it's tough
for all the teams when they have to contemplate it.
And suddenly, you know, Tasman, having won the Shield, found
themselves playing Auckland and Taranaki for the Shield in the
space of a few days, and I think it just
it was just a bridge too far for them with
a few injuries. Except but they were, you know, adamant
that there was no excuse that was coming from the

(01:26):
Tasman side, and Neil Barnes, I thought, was very gracious
the way, you know, he pointed that out, that there
was a storm week factor in it. But you know,
regardless of all that, I thought Tarderanaki it was just
an excellent performance from them. They looked really well organized.
Their defense was fantastic and that was probably as important
as their attack. So they'll keep the shield for the summer.

(01:49):
It goes back there. I think they last held it
back in twenty twenty and before that twenty seventeen, so
they're having a good run with the Shield over the
last decade and they absolutely deserved their have it. You know,
I think there are a chance now to do the double,
I really do.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah, I think you might be right as well. And
yesterday afternoon I love watching this one. We saw Auckland
hosting Bay of Plenty at Auckland Grammar, great scenes. Do
you think that's the future of NPC perhaps playing at
sideide grounds.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Yeah, I think in some places it has to be.
I you know some of the regions. I know you've
seen some great crowds in total this year, which is awesome.
Obviously the Shield bought the fans and big time and
Blenham and Nelson, but I think in the big cities
we saw the success again of Canterbury taking a game
to Rony Order and that was you know, it was
quite poignant too, you know, having that game at Auckland

(02:41):
Grammar School because of course they're playing for the John
Drake Memorial boot Jacky. He was a grammar man who
found his happy place in his later years in the
Bay of Planning. As you know. BK was a great
friend of mine and to me that made it a
really special day having it at Grammar and Bay of Planty.
They had to work really hard for it, but they
got it there there and we're finally going to a
Battle of the Bays this year, mate.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
We Yeah, we're really looking forward to that one and
something special to Kurt act and another Grammar Boy leading
the bay too that one. Or though it was a
crazy old game, wasn't it the interesting stance?

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Yeah, Look, I didn't see a lot of it because
I was in the airport and Nelson just hoping we
were going to get a fly back. We had a
bit of his eruption, so I didn't see a lot
of it, and what I did see of it was
on a pretty small screen. But look, it was just
a good scrap as you'd expect. But yeah, Kurt, I
think he's learned a lot about what you know, the

(03:34):
whole John Drake path because he's traveled at himself, Grammar Boy,
University Club and again and a guy who's found his
home and Bay of Plenty. But really excited about the
Bay of Plenty Hawk's Bay game because where I work
there seem to be a lot of people from both
sides of the argument, and the banter that goes on

(03:55):
ahead of this game and the bragging rights is beyond belief.
And I'm actually quite glad to be a neutral when
it comes to this one.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
It's been a cracking season when you think about it
of the NPC, you know, hitting to that final playoff
in the spinal three spots up for grabs and powers
is like Auckland missing out. I mean, what does that
show us?

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Well, it doesn't say a lot for the Blues region
when there are three teams you know, didn't make it Auckland,
North Harbor and Northland. You know, I think they try,
but the sum total of the parts was obviously pretty good.
When it came to Super Rugby. I'm not sure how
much of a concerned that is, well, you know, whether
it's a great sort of correlation, But I think what

(04:35):
gets me bcas you look at the quarter finals and
suddenly there's a sense that this is a whole new
ball game because you've got some teams that have been
playing really well starting to feel the pinch, injuries starting
to bite, other teams seem to be regathering their forces,
and of course we've had the All Blacks reintroduced. On
what I have to say, it looks to me like

(04:57):
a fairly ad hoc basis. I'm not quite sure how
they come about who gets released for who, But suddenly
you know, Canterbury getting all these All Blacks back, are
looking like, you know, a very strong team, and you
know they take on Tasman at a time where maybe
Tasman might be just you know, be a little bit
vulnerable after losing the shield. So that brings Canterby back

(05:19):
into the equation we've talked about. Bay have plenty Hawks
Bay Hawks. Bay sort of fell off the cliff a
bit after losing the shield. I've been a bit hit,
and since then they have plenty of being consistent. Taranaky
White Cuttle, well Taranaki won when they met in the
round robin. But you know, White Cutter a strong team.
And then you've got Wellington who've been leading the way,
you know, pretty much the whole way through. But they

(05:41):
come again up against the county's Monaco team who've just
I think they've scored something like one hundred and twenty
four points their last three games and gave Wellington an
absolute dusting a few weeks ago. So even the one
v eight, there's just that little bit of uncertainty about it.
I think we're in for a great two or three weeks.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
Yeah, I would totally agree with the you mate, Let's
talk about the All Black Scott Robinson said to name
his squad for the Northern Hemisphere later today and then
of course they also name it All Black fifteen as well,
so something like sixty odd players Acrown New Zealand could
have their names or out. Do you think anyone who's
played their way into Foreman to the All Blacks out
of NPC sixty nine.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
I think it's yeah, And so if you don't make
it then I think, you know, you'd be feeling what
have I done. Yeah, it's quite ambitious to have that
many players going away. There'll be value in that, of course,
and you know it's happened in the past when they've
sent I think I was on a tour in two
thousand where we sort of covered two of those tours

(06:44):
at the same time, and there was a lot of
value in that. But yeah, it's going to be interesting.
I don't know whether i'd sort of speculate too much.
I know there was a bit of talk yesterday about,
you know, how the talent was going to be or
where it was going to come from, and certain franchises,
how many players they were going to get in, you know,

(07:05):
not others. The one guy who I saw yesterday I
thought you know, it was absolutely ready for a return
to the All Blacks. Was playing the Tataranhaky team was
Josh Lord. I thought he was immense, you know, and
and so I hope he makes it back him because
you know, he was a towering figure in that game
yesterday and that's what we need. So no, look, it's

(07:28):
going to be it's going to be fascinating. I'm sure
there's going to be a lot of debate, but you know,
let's not make any bones about it what lies ahead
for the All Blacks in particular. This is a very
very daunting tour, you know, for the for the new
all Black coaching set up.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Mate, I did right there. Hey TJ, nice to chat mate,
Thank you for your input. We'll do it in soon.
