Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sport, the Latest from the Land and just great rock.
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport,
your home of live commentary.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Join us on the show today and it's a little
bit of a wine lesson in a way. Michael Cooper, Montie, Michael.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Good morning, Bright.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
We're going to talk today single vineyard wines. Now, before
we actually talk about the attraction of them, just explain
what is a single vineyard winery.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yeah, well, that's a very good question when you think
about it. You know, there are wines that are blended
from around New Zealand, so all you'll see on the
label is product of New Zealand. And then you'll get
very often regional wine, so it'll say Hawk's Bay or Mulborough,
you know, other regions in Flotago on the label. Other
times you'll get a subregion like it might be a

(00:57):
Malvin Bloc that says valley, or it could be a
Hawk's Bay read that says Giblet Gravel. So we're now
getting down to the sort of district level. Then you
can get down to single vineyard level. And it's often
used to describe those wines as a sense of place,

(01:17):
which is. I like that phrase. And if for listeners
who are looking for a fast, cheap, reliable way to travel,
this is a really good way to travel because if
you visited that vineyard in the past, and maybe you
buy a few of their bottles, take them home, and
when you're back home you open that wine, you've been
to that site. So it really transports you quickly back

(01:40):
to that vineyard. And even if you haven't visited the vineyard,
you can go on to the producer's website and it
will normally have a very evocative photograph. And so if
you buy a bottle of single vineyard wine, that can
sort of instantly transport you to a completely different place.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Fantastic. All right, Well let's talk about it for you then.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Well, here's a classic example of one which has just
been released. It's the twenty twenty three vintage of Pegasus
bay Reasling in wipebra This is sort of a recognized
New Zealand classics and this I think is one of
the best vintages yet of that wine. It's already delicious,

(02:21):
it's beautifully sensored, it's beautifully balanced, it's got rich, vigorous, peachy,
citrusy flavors. It's got gentle sweetness, as reasling more often
than not does have, but it's balanced by fresh acidity.
It's got lovely vibrancy and depth. So for anyone who's
sort of cautious about reasling and thinking maybe I should

(02:46):
give it another go, I strongly recommend Pegasus Bey, Whiteer Valley,
North Canterbury. Reasling twenty twenty three. Okay, it's thirty dollars,
but number one it's classic, and number two it will
take you straight to the Whitebra Valley in North Canterbury.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
And it's a lovely vineyard. I've xu you've been there
and visited that vineyard. It's a really really nice place to.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
Visit, exactly, yes, and a very popular restaurant and a
great setting. And the vines you know, which were planted,
you know, thirty or forty years ago. That's now a
real boon for Pekaso Spay because they can now make
wine from these very mature vines.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
All right, you're another one, Well let's do it's.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Do a red now. This one's almost exactly the same
price twenty nine dollars. Church Road McDonald's series, Hawk's Bay
cabinet sauvignon twenty twenty one. So from North Canterbury, we're
now going to Hawk's Bay and we're going from white
to red. This is a barrel matured red wine and

(03:48):
it was grown in the red Stone Vineyard and that's
in the Bridge par triangle of Hawks Bay, so it's
near Hastings. It's dark and youthful in color, filling, it's
well ripened. It's got rich, vibrant black currant and RedBerry flavors,
seasoned with nutty ooak, smooth tannins. It's already delicious, but

(04:11):
it's going to get better and better. So that's Church
Road McDonald's series, Hawks Bay Cabinet Sauvignon twenty twenty one
from the Redstone Vineyard in the Bridge PA triangle. Twenty
nine dollars.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Sounds good, sounds fantastic.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
Great Bryant.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
So that's a little wrap of I guess single vineyard wind.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
What would you like one more?

Speaker 4 (04:31):
Oh? Okay, well, squeeze one more in.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
Would you like a white or a red?

Speaker 4 (04:34):
I'd love a red.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
Okay, go for a pino noir this time, yes please? Okay, right,
So we're off to Mulboro with this one dog Point Vineyard,
Mulboro Pino Noir twenty twenty two. Now this one's a
bit higher in price, it's fifty five dollars, but it's
a prestigious producer single vineyard, and the owners of dog
Point Vineyard were intimately involved for decades in the setting

(04:59):
up and running off Cloudy Bay in the early decades. Right,
So dog Point Vineyard p. Twenty two. It's grown on
the south side of the Wairau Valley where they have
soils that ten more towards being clay based, which is
recognized as being ideal for pino noir. And the family

(05:21):
that owned dog Point Vineyard they go back, you know,
many decades farming that land. They know it intimately. It's
a really classy, finely structured wine. It's fragrant, deep ruby.
It's got layers of flavor, berry, plum, spice and nuts,
fresh acidity. It's got lovely harmony and complexity. Also, as

(05:43):
a bonus, it's certified organic. So that's dog Point Vineyard
Marlborough Pino no Twenty twenty two. Buy and drink that
and you're off to the south side of the Wairau Valley.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
Fantastic hey Michael. Great to chat. Thank you so much
for that. We wine listen. We'll talk next week.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Great, right, glutle the fight.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
When you call the left thing, it always
