Speaker 1 (00:00):
International rugby coverage on the country. Sport Breakfast is proudly
brought to you by Excess Solutions, elevating you and your
business to a higher level. Can't beat a bit of
good lead Zipplin to wake up to in the morning.
Gregor Paul joins us this morning, morning, Gregor, good morning.
Since we spoke last year and now sixty five players
that are making up two all Black squads, the You're

(00:21):
Black fifteen and also the full All Black team, what
did you make of it? All?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Well, All Black team first, predictable. I think that was
well signposted that that the selectors were going to pick
largely of the same group that they'd already taken him
with the one exception, Cam roy Guard was fit, so
he was going to come back in. And I think
by the fact that you've got a second team going

(00:48):
over to that same part of the world again, it
was flagged up that they wanted to put some guys
in there like Noah Holt. Them missed out on being
an All Black, but it's better for him to go
and play old bleck. Thing then is to sit and
not play for the old Blecks. There's also sense that
the next generation of players if you like, we're going
to go in that All Black fifteen rather than you know,

(01:11):
rather than the Old Blecks. If we didn't have an
All Black fifteen, would we have seen guys like Peter
Lacai and no hope of them, Josh Lord, would they
have been in the Old Blacks? Possibly?

Speaker 1 (01:20):
Yeah, I was. I was totally surprised that Ricky rick
Attelly wasn't there. I've beaten my drum about this the
last few days. What about you your thoughts on that one?

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah, I don't quite understand what he's done. He seems
to have gone from well, I would have thought he
was a contender to be an All Blacks, Yeah, a lot,
given the way he played for the Blues and the
influence he had to now he's what not in the
top seven, in fact eight because sam Sonny Takeoko was
injured as well. So yeah, that seems like an extraordinary drop.

(01:52):
But look, the coaches obviously feel there's a there's a
lot of talent in that in that area. I'm not
sure I agree with them, And they've got a view
that he's number eight on the list. I've got to
view his number three on the list. But you know,
I'm not the coach.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
They are no, exactly right, they've lost his phone number, Ricky,
don't lose that number, Alrighty. So you wrote an article
yesterday that I read in The Herald regarding live streaming
on inzida Plus. So both these games when the fifteen
play are going to in Munster And and Georgia are
going to be played on New Zealand Rugby's Insider Plus
streaming service, aren't they?

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Yeah? Yeah, well yeah, they are so interesting development there
because it's a sign perhaps of what's in the thinking
and the longer term thinking here is so you won't
be able to watch these games on INZIDR plus if
you live in New Zealand, that won't be available. They'll
be jail block did But it's a view here maybe
that they're just testing the water a little bit to

(02:51):
see what kind of uptake they get, So how many
people tune in. If they get few, that's great, and
I'm hoping that they'll get a few people hooked onto
Rugby or hooked onto the channel because they might not
know it exists. And then possibly this is my guess,
rather there's no information on this, but my guess is
in time they might look to try and monetize that,

(03:12):
but paywall up and say, actually, do you know what
if we put a paywall up at a subscription of
pay per view for these sorts of games, if sure
by say how many people are willing to pay for.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Them because it's going to be streamed on in something
like one hundred and fifty countries under the arrangement, I believe.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Yeah, and you'd be a mate. They've done this. They've
had little moments in the past where they've experimented with
us before and you'd be surprised that what the numbers
look like. You know, you might get more people willing
to pay to watch all black content than people actually realize,
particularly given countries like Spain and Portugal with the games

(03:50):
actually really growing quite quickly so that the World Cup.
Portugal had a great World Cup games obviously, and you know,
really good health thereother country, So you might find if
you can pick up five ten thousand people to buy that,
and then you multiply that across you know, one hundred
and fifty countries, starting to get quite a big number.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
So into our plas, does it mean that you know
we will have to subscribe to it?

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Here?

Speaker 1 (04:16):
In New Zealand obviously.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Well that's not yet. That's something that that's the big
question mark is if you know, there's a way to
access an audience that is not well served by mainstream
broadcast deal. So there's probably no Spanish broadcaster that buys
the rights to show all black stests in Spain, but
there are a lot of Rugby fans in Spain, so

(04:39):
there's the idea there you can start accessing people in
countries that don't are not well serviced by the by
the home you know, television options. The big thing would be,
you know, would we ever do that in New Zealand?
Would we ever see New Zealand Rugby just go alone
and say that we don't need to just well go
on here, pay your money and watch us. Like, if
it is possible, it's a long way down the track,

(05:02):
I would have thought. I think there would be a
real risk for them to be thinking about that at
the moment.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
Well, I mean, they've got the sky their partners, really,
aren't they, So they're not going to do that.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
Look, I think there's a reality to most of us
that you know, we're delivering a digital age, but there's
still a reality that you want that. You need to
trust the broadcaster when it comes to live sport. You
want to you want to press a button on your
TV screen, you know what I mean. You probably want
the confidence that when you do that, it's a company
like Sky that have got a proven track record of

(05:33):
delivering ittually. You've got no Internet issues, You've got no
glitches in the in the performance, you know, in the technology.
We've seen companies do this before and it hasn't worked
because they haven't been able to actually deliver the product.
So you don't want to be doing that with all
black tests. You want to give everyone the certainty about
what they're going to be they're actually going to get it.

Speaker 1 (05:52):
Yeah. Absolutely, Well, while we got to here, Grego, we've
got quarter finals weekend of Bannings This weekend Bunnings in
PC Wellington County, so you on that one.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Look, I've watched a lot of MPC, so I'm wildly
guessing here. So I'm going to go Counties.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
Oh okay, all right, Battle of the Bays on Saturday
afternoon by Plenty Hawks Bay.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Well, my wife is currently working in the Hawk's beat,
so I'm gonna have to go with them.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
Oh, you've upset my producer for a start, I have
and Saturday night it's Taranaki.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
And white cuttle Taranaki.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
Yeah, red Filly shield holders, Tasman Canterbury wraps it all
up on the weekend.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Well, big brother Tatan and that relationship Barly, isn't it
that Tasman not the big bother there? But yeah, I'm
gone with them.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
That's going to be a crack of that one actually,
going on your Greg, nice to chat mate.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Enjoy those games, thanks mate, Gregor
