Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time to talk about first now on the show, we
finally made contact. He's standing there in pitt Lane. Greg
Murphy joins us.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
Morning Murphy, A BKA.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Very very well, thank you. You had a nice we reunion.
I saw yesterday on social media with the HRT holding
of the Commodore that you and Craig Lounds drove.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Oh yeah, it is magnificent Vin Eggleston from Egleson Motorsport.
He is, let's just say, a connoisseur of old racing
team cars and he's got a beautiful fleet. Well he's
massing them as he goes, but building and restoring these
cars and he's just doing a wonderful job. And that

(00:40):
car is here, it's racing in the Heritage class this
weekend that I'm racing in alongside Peter Brock's OH five
car from nine to ninety six. King Lawson is here
from New Zealand and his VP mobile Brock Commodore as well.
It's it's just awesome, it really is.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
The last time you raced in the Big Race was
a couple of years ago with the Richie Stanaway. Would
you love to be back in the field. I mean,
Craig Lounds are still out there racing.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
No why why no, mate? Well because I stopped racing.
Craig Lounds didn't and he he needs it more than
I do for some reason. So no, I'm quite happy
on the sidelines, watching from watching from where I'm watching from.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
So, Greg, what is it that makes Bathist such an
amazing race?

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Ah? It's a history, isn't it. You know, it's just
the historic side of it. And you know it's been
it's been a part and parcel with so many people
and drivers over the years. It's just created such a
you know, an incredible alignment with sports sports fans. You know,

(01:52):
motorsport is very popular. Bathists is unique. It's just a
unique race track and it's created the legends and icons
and heres and stories in it and still continues to
do it today.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
And you know what it's like to go around there
very very quickly, that Lap of the Gods back in
two thousand and three. What are your recollections of that
lap in O three?

Speaker 2 (02:12):
Ah? Well, yeah, I mean I don't not really a
you know, a full on recollection, you know that I
can really remember, but I mean the you know, I
just remember just wanting to go out and drive that
lap as fast as I could, and there was a shootout.
I love being part of the shootout. I think a

(02:33):
very special special part of you know, the Baptist week
and weekends. And you know, my my intent was to
go and do the best lap I could. And you know,
I didn't have any expectation of doing anything like like
I did at all. It's just that's the way it
worked out. So you know, I'm still very humbled by
the reaction to it and and the fact that people,

(02:55):
you know, see it as as something as a special
part of Baptist and I you know, just haveing my
name next to something that's uh is considered like that
is is an amazing thing to have. So I feel
very lucky.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
There's so many really incredible bits of that track, you know,
legendary corners and things like the cutting mcphillamy, the chase.
Have you got a favorite part of the track that
you love going through?

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Uh? Well, really it is the top of the circuit.
I mean, from the exit of the cutting all the
way through the forest elbow is just something just you know,
it's hard to explain and hard to put into words.
So you know that that that to me is the
is the best part of it, you know, coming in
Conrad is you know, very famous, and you know for
good reason, and it's you know, doing doing two hundred

(03:44):
and ninety comments and are down there is is amazing.
But you know, those corners across the top are just
something outrageously awesome. And the combination of those corners together
here is something that not a lot of racetracks have.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
And I imagine you would have to it would take
one hundred plus percent concentration going up around the top there,
through those corners and down the dipper.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
Oh yeah, one hundreds yeah, absolutely. I mean that's what
it's all about. If you want to do it well
and you want to do it fast, and yeah, you've
got to have one hundred percent and be on your
game and you know no where to put the car
and the inch or millimeter perfect effectively, And you know
that's what it's all about. So you know, race car drivers,

(04:29):
the best race car drivers do that well and and
that's what drives them and gives them the bus and
the thrill.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Greg, you know what it's like to win Bathurst. You've
done it four times. What does it take to win Bathurst?
I mean you get a fast car, but there's a
lot more to it, isn't there.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Well, you know, yeah, fast car is one thing. Team.
You know, it's not just the drivers that drive the car.
It's it's having a.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Group of people that put together all the things you.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Need to put a thousand case together six and a half,
seven hours, I mean, erasing, no mistake, pit stops, strategy,
a little bit of luck, as they say, I suppose
you need a bit of that. Not that I really
believe in it, but you know, safety, cars falling the
right time, all that kind of stuff is all part
of it.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
Six New Zealanders this year, Andre Heinngartner, Jackson Evans, Ryan Wood,
Matt Pain, Richie Standaway last year's winner, and Fabian cool Thard.
I mean, any one of those guys could win it,
couldn't they.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Yeah? I think listen there, I think there's a too more.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
There's somebod there that got higher chances than others, just
the way it is and the way you know the
favorites are lining up. But that is also the thing
with APIs you never know, and it's all about today,
rolling out today with a good car out the box
and then just find shooting not having to go chasing.

(05:49):
If you go start chasing today, there's a good chance
you'll be chasing all the way through the weekend. So
having a good day to day and practice where things
go well and you're not chasing the car to try
and make it faster, you know that usually puts your
good seat and there will be some today that'll be chasing.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
Of course, you've got a lazy five. Who would you
put it on to win Bathurst this year? You mate?

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Ah, I hate pick, I really do.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
I just hate.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
I'm not I'm not going to.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Say, because you know there's some guys out there that
are probably the favorites. But it'd be nice to nice
to have someone roll through on someday and grab that
chicken flag that that haven't won the race before, and
to be fair that that could be the favorite. Will
Brown hasn't won it. I would say Will Brown's got
by and probably the team mate Brock Feenie and Jamie
Wincup the way they were at Sandown, they probably those

(06:40):
two cars are probably the favorites. But out of the
four drivers, only one guy's wont it.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
And it's Jamie Wincump. So you know, it's be nice
to have a car and two drivers that have one
badness one of this weekend.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
Greg, always great to catch up mate. Enjoy your weekend there.
We'll catch you again soon.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Cheers.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
