Speaker 1 (00:19):
From the cricket field to the cow shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yes, Heartland Rugby now on the show. The Meads and
the Law Cup semi finals are on this weekend and
the Little Hare Cup this is These are the teams
that finished fifth to eighth in the standings and it'll
see King Country face East Coast and Hot Finua Company
host West Coast. Some tempting games there and in the
Meads Cup Longanui the home team hometown team will host
(00:46):
Thames Valley and South Canterbury will host rivals Mid Canterbury.
That's a cracker joining us out of Mid Canterbury. First
year head coach Mad Winter's Morning Matt Morning had a guy.
Oh look great mate. You guys are got to be
don't you.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Yeah? Make good word absolutely yeah no, excited doesn't quite
do it justice. So yeah, the thing's right there. Yeah absolutely.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
I think what was it twenty fifteen? Maybe it was
the last time you were in a semi final for
a Meats Cup?
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yes, yeah, no, so she's been been a while between drinks,
so now we're just stoked. Thanks to be your mate.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yep, how have you enjoyed your first year in charge.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Mat, I loved it. Yeah, I loved every minute of
a mate like. It's been pretty stressful at times, and
learned a hell of a lot. I can safely say
I'm not the same coach I was ten weeks ago,
but it's been awesome.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
What have you learned? What have you learned?
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Mate? Oh I spoke, I don't ye, don't want to
boy you too much, mate, but just put some pieces
in around that you can't take too much regarded. You've
got to just keep keep going back and working on
the little things because it's just focusing on getting better
each week is probably the biggest thing because you don't
get much time to get at the start, so you
can't just think that that box is ticked and then
(01:57):
moved on. So yeah, no, just keep keep folks on.
Those little things are just more and more focusing on
us rather than about your position you play. So now
it's been big sleep ruining curve, but you loved it.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Some of the challenges you've faced. I mean, I guess
you know, because it's amateur You know, you've got tradesmen
and farmers and people like that in the team. They
just sort of turn up for practice, don't they. So
you know they're going to be days when you say,
I wonder where so and so is.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
Yep, yeah, absolutely, You've got fellows there, traders that the
other day. We have bloke who was down in Timory
for working and finish up till nine point thirty, so
he missed training that night. And yeah you've got farmers,
they've got carving, yeah, milking, you've got yeah, trades yeah, builders, Yeah,
everything like that, mate. So you've just got to try
and work it in and do the bus you can
with what you've got.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Let's have a look at the season. Six wins, two
losses so far this season. Would you have taken that
at the start of the season.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Yeah, anyone outside of our change you said he had
a said that we would have been in the in
the MAE semi finals ten weeks ago, they probably would
have got laughed. But yeah, we're pretty confident with the
playing group we've got and the men we've got around
this that you know we're do well. But yeah, you
certainly don't turn down an opportunity for me to see me.
So we knew we will have to grab a bit
of two heads who've.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Been some of the keep who've been some of the
key players for you guys this season.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Captain calver Olt, he's a pretty special bloke. He's been outstanding.
Lead by example, Edam Fridge Williamson, he's a bit of
a Heartland hero. He's playing Zell and Heartlin a few
few times. He's playing some of the best foody I've
ever seen him play. And then at our Stephen Dicklon McCormick,
he's been pretty exceptional all year. So yeah, those three
in the pack have been outstanding. And then we've had
(03:33):
Kieran McLay who's a local boy originally but he's gone
away and played a bit of professional foody who's come
back this season for us at nine and he's been
a mint too. So you know, we've been pretty lucky
to have some pretty special performance throughout the year. Really.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
So back in round three you met South Cantergory. I
think you lost to them forty one nineteen. There currently
on a forty six odd game winning streak. So do
you feel like the side can break that streak? Mate?
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Oh? Absolutely, mate. Yeah, we're the have rocks in the heat.
If we weren't aware of the formidable opponents in front
of us, I suppose, but yeah, more than anything like that, mate,
We've we've set ourselves up, We've earned ourselves a hell
of an opportunity and that yeah, very very buzz I
suppose they're excited to have it. So now they we've
got it, we've got to go in there and believe
we can do it. But it's going to be it's not.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Going to be easy going, Sue, And you've got the
locals behind you that the town's talking about it.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
Yeah, yeah, And it's one of the awesome things about
our heart and funny I suppose like you go to
the supermarket, you go to the k FO, everything like that,
and people you don't know are always either asking your
better or wishing you well. So yeah, that absolutely is
a couple of supporter of buses being put on as
well to get down there and buddy get behind us.
So that it's very very cool.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
What Matt would have been the key work on in
training this week?
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Ah yeah, probably again like attached on the remate, just
giving what we do really well. We've been been in
pictures even in that versus Kennery game. You know, we
either side a halftime we were we're going for well.
Doing what we do well. Is when we start focusing
too much about other people or getting caught up and
what other other teams are trying to do, that's probably
when we sort of fade away a little bit. So yeah,
(05:09):
our biggest work ons have been just yet naming what
we do really well. If we can do that for
long periods, then yeah we're going to stay with them,
and if we go too far away from that, then
yeah we're going to end for a long day. So yeah,
just working on us really.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
That's good. As the song says, do what you do
do well, mate, and all are very very best.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Night magic, Thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Absolute pleasure. That's the head coach for Mid Canterbury. Matt
Winter's Game of Course is happening this weekend right across
the country Meads and law Hall Cup, so it's going
to be great. There'll be cracker that one Mid Canterbury
and South Canterbury
