Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the cricket field to the cows shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Well, it's time to talk football now on the show
where the excitement is definitely building ahead of their opening
match at go Media Stadium on the nineteenth of October.
Here and I'm talking about It'tsuzu yout A League. The
newest team in the competition. The second New Zealand one,
of course, is the Auckland FC team playing the Brisbane

(00:27):
Roar joining us out of Auckland FC, the Black Knights
is their CEO, Nick Becker, Mornning Neck, Brian Heed, Oh,
very very well, thank you g. We're getting close to
that opening game. Must be getting exciting in the club now.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Nine days ago, it's pretty exciting. So yeah, we're kind
of The energy in here is fantastic. The team of pumps,
so we're really looking forward to it and it's true
to say all of already getting around it as well.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
How crazy has the last year been. I was at
that announcement on the wharf in Auckland. It seems like
yesterday day and suddenly, as you said, we're only a
week or so out from that first game.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
That's right. Yeah, no, it's it's it's flowing pass. To
be honest, I think, you know, the kind of we
knew it was going to be a massive task when
when we started back and like we first spoke about
it and got the license in November, announced team in March,
pulled together a football team and football department, a whole
kind of you know, club, commercial, marketing, content, retail, all

(01:28):
of that stuff, found ourselves a place to train and
obviously a place to play, and and I feel like,
you know, I'm immensely proud of what my team has
managed to do in such a short amount of time.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Would have been some of the biggest challenges Nick, for
you and and everybody involved.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Yeah, I think time, you know, to the point it's
just been it's sort of it's been good because time
has already made us focus on what we have to do.
And I think, you know, from the start we kind
of davoused out some real core values and princes and
more to focus on. And I think, you know, we
focused on the community and petting ourselves in it. And
if we hadn't done that, I think it would have been.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
A massive challenge.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
But thankfully Auckland is the Auckland football community and wider
Auckland have all got around us. We've had some amazing
response from from the local clubs and things like that.
You know, we're run initiatives where they've sold memberships on
our behalf and we've given them back. We just recently
announced that we've we've invested one hundred k back into

(02:27):
local clubs through that membership rebate, and that on top
of the sort of money we've given them for the
training conversation the players, means that we've kind of invested
over one hundred and seventy thousand dollars back into Auckland's
football scene before we've even started playing. So what we've
what we've sort of said is, you know, this hasn't
been the hardest me but the hard work has been

(02:48):
out there on the streets, meeting the meeting the fans
and meeting the people and meeting our potential fans to
see them then to kind of turn around and support
us has been so rewarding and just so fantastic.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
And yesterday you the official announcement that the A and
Z has come on board as the official partner of
the team.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
That's right, Yeah, so as there are our fishing official
banking partner, and we're so we're so happy to have
them on board. They straight out of the blocks and
they're going to be running an amazing competition that's going
to be announced, so Auckt and football fans are going
to be very very fortunate to find out about that
in the next few days. They've even come on and
done a branded debit card for us, which must be

(03:27):
a first. I certainly haven't seen it before, so that's
really cool and and you know, a big shout out
to all of our our commercial partners really so we've
had you know, Anchor come on as our funder shirt
go media supporters from from pretty much from day one,
mc donald's who's a fantastic supporter of New Zealand football
as a whole, but also supports US and and the
Warrington Phoenix, and then a whole range of other fantastic brands.

(03:50):
You have Barft and Thompson Cooper, which is amazingly innovative
and and really cool car brand. So yeah, we're we're
really excited with the with the breadth of of Ee
who's joined us. We've also got Betcher, which is a
quite fun and creative you know, sort of sports wagering
brand who have have come on board too, so things
things are really positive with the commercial space and.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
You've you've signed lots of players as well, so you've
just about got the team together. But there's a hot
rumor floating around you waiting to sign one more foreign
playered can you can you fill us in on that one?

Speaker 1 (04:24):
Perhaps I can't give you the full step, Brian, but
I think yeah, absolutely, we've got We've got one last
he's actually signed now, so and it's always pretty tense
around the sort of pre season and the signing period
for the players, but this one's been particularly slow and
coming very late.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
So we signed out. We've got five visa spots. He
signed Hero who joined us probably a few weeks ago,
and then we're final piece of the puzzle. Our fifth
visa is joining us, also from the South American country.
He arrives in, he arives into walking on Friday morning,
so we'll have the full squad of twin and ready
to go to round one.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
And you've got a preseason game against Malaysia coming up
I believe Friday as well.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
That's right, Yeah, we played Malaysia closed doors. It would
be a good runout for the boys. It'll be the
first time we've had a proper game at Comedie. We
had a sort of friendly training game with Marvel the
other day which was fantastic and they're a great opposition.
But we're going to retreat this one as an equal
kind of conditions, timings, everything will be kind of merit

(05:27):
against what we'll have in the A League the following
weekend when on Saturday nine times when we played Brisbane.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
So Nick, what does a successful season for Auckland DEFC
look like?

Speaker 1 (05:38):
Then?

Speaker 3 (05:40):
Great question. I mean, we have from day one come
out and said we're not here to make up the numbers.
You know, we were an ambitious club. We were really
fortunate and that we've got some fantastic owners back in
the club, both locally here but obviously our majority owner
Bill Foley as well, who's really experienced with sports clubs
around the world, and we want to win. You know,

(06:01):
I'm going to come out here and say we'll win
it in the first year, but we definitely want to
treat every game like that and go and go on
that mentality. So you know, you know, I'd love to
see us in that Grand Final, but you know, finals
is a real sort of target, a realistic target for us,
and then I'll just off off the patch. Just getting
Auckland's support, making them proud of the team and of

(06:26):
the club and what we what we do and what
we achieve is definitely a marked success as well.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
When Bill Foley was here in November, there was talk
in the future of a stadium there your own personal one.
Any any more news on that one.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
The stadium of mcbeck. I'd love that, Brian, No, there's
there's We We would love to play in our own home,
like any any sporting club, would you be mad to
to not? And and also you know first first is
probably before the stadiums, even the high performance center. You
know where we're based up at North Harbor. It's a
great facility, but would love to have our own space.

(07:01):
And I think I think Auckland is lacking in facilities
and public facilities, whether it's a stadium, high performance centers,
all that sort of stuff is a you know, there's
the need for some new infrastructure here. We're not directly
involved in any kind of projects right now, but we'd
love to be in the future.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Fantastic Nick Well, all the very very best for that
warm up game on Friday, and all the best for
that one against the Brisbane Raw on the nineteenth. Mate,
thanks for joining us.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Thanks Brian, appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
CEO of Auckland FC, Nick Becker, Brisbane Raw Go Media
Stadium Next it's next Saturday five o'clock kickoff of that game.
There are still some tickets left, but if you'd like
to win some for free. Next week we're going to
be giving you the chance to win tickets to go
along to Mount Smart to Go Media Stadium to watch
their inaugural game. You can always then say I was

(07:50):
there for that first game to be f
