Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the cricket field to the cow shed.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
Sport themselves, the Sun Lady.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Away are We're talking the America's Cup now on the
Country Sport Breakfast where we have finally made it to
the big Dance Team New Zealand.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
We'll finally return to match racing on Sunday morning, New
Zealand time when they begin their best of thirteen series
against Ineos Britannia in bus Slona. Joining us on the
show this morning. A man on the ground for Rather
New Zealand here all insed me out of Barcelona. We say, oh,
I send you Chris Reeves alor Chris gooday mate, how

(01:07):
are you very very well? Thank you. You've just recently
come from a press conference, so what was that, like,
what did you find out from that?

Speaker 2 (01:17):
So we've just had the Women's America's Cup. We had
some racing in that earlier today. It was a little
bit frustrating out there. They only got through one race
in about five hours of waiting. So yeah, just a
lot of talk about a frustrating day out there and
trying to figure out how to's oil in these waves.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
Team New Zealand. The women's team. Are they hanging in there?

Speaker 2 (01:38):
They are, They're going to need to do some work tomorrow.
They are i think six five points outside the three.
They need to make it into the top three to
make the semi finals, so they've got a little bit
of work to do, but I'm sure they can figure
it out.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
All right, So let's talk about the big dance though.
The match will be the first competitive racing in a
month for the boys for Team New Zealand, while britann you,
of course, has been racing right through the Challenger series.
Do you think that'll hurt the Kiwis a wee bit.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Yeah, it was very interesting to see just how much
that shows in these races. That was actually the talk
in the media room today was you know, whether ring
race ruster is going to be a thing at all
or not, depends how you ask. I think the Brite
feel a lot better having come through some some tough

(02:28):
series so far, particularly that one against Luna Rossa, like
they won at seven four, but those were all very
close races for the most part, whereas, like you say,
the Keywis haven't sailed in a proper race for a
month now. So just how much the work they've done
outside of the race course is going to show, Well,
it'll be wait and see, But I do know that

(02:50):
they feel very race ready. They feel like they're on
top of things. I feel like they're where they need
to be. So their first couple of races on Sunday
morning will be very very interesting.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Is there a sense of surprise that it is Britannia
that the Kiwis will be rating against because any of
us Bretanna, they started quite slowly in their Challenger series,
didn't they.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, I think there is a little bit. Even sub
Ben Ainsleygue said to me before the ragatta that you know,
they felt like they were coming in as a little
bit of a dark horse and they were going to
need to make a late charge to get over. I
guess the teams that you would say many thought were
the fastest teams, like Luna Rosa and American Manager coming
into this, but they have time, they're on perfectly. They've

(03:35):
made some little adjustments throughout the regatta so far. They've
seen them go from being sort of a middle of
the table team in the round robins to actually being
the top seeded team coming out of the round Robins
and now the team challenging for the America's Cup and
this is the first time in sixty years that a
British Challenger has made it to the Cup match. So

(03:56):
you've got to feel like they're going to be up
for it and they're going to be throwing everything have
into this.

Speaker 4 (04:01):
And that's skipper by one of the greatest sailors in
the world. So been Ainsley as you mentioned, aren't they.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Yep, they are. And you know he's been doing this
for a little while. He has won in America's Cup before.
He was part of that San Francisco win that we'll
try not to talk too much about, but yeah, he
knows what it's like to when he knows what it's
like to lead a team. And yeah, like his competitive
his competitive drivers is right up there, Chris.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
We've seen some pretty challenging conditions over the course of
the series and Challenger Series and so on. Are there
certain conditions that will favor the Key We vote.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah, it's hard to say because we haven't seen them
really in acting for a while. What we have seen
of them is they look like they can handle everything
that the sea out here is going to throw at them.
We haven't seen them in those very top range conditions
and a race setting yet, but they will have seen that.
I don't think we're expecting the wind to get that

(05:00):
high again, but hey, you'd never know what you're going
to get out there until the day of racing. But
I feel like, you know, they would have seen that,
they would have taken everything into a company needed to,
and they will have been out there practicing in every
single condition that they might get, So you have to
feel like they're coming in pretty well drilled.

Speaker 4 (05:19):
Chris, You've been in Barcelona for a couple of days now.
What are the vibes like around the village and the
hype for the big one for the America's Cup.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yeah, there's plenty of excitement. It feels like it's building
a little bit. I know there are a lot of
Kiwis who are coming into town, so I think over
the next few days, as we get toward the Cup match,
it'll start building. We are the opening ceremony tonight and
I'm sure from what we've been told, that'll be quite
a big event. So yeah, it'll just be one of
those things that keeps gradually building on the ground.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
Here. Two races on Sunday morning to kick things off. Chris,
who are you picking to win the Cup? Mate?

Speaker 2 (05:57):
I would have to say Team New Zealand at the moment,
but I think most people you ask will probably give
the same answer. Until we see these folks go head
to head. It's hard to pick against the defender knowing
that they've had so much time to basically get faster
without anyone really saying so. I think we're going to
see quite a good effort from the dues of.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
Summer Fantastic Chris, Hey, thanks for joining us this morning,
mate to enjoy No, thank you. Yeah, we're getting to
the business end of the competition. So two races on
Sunday morning at one o'clock if you want to set

(06:39):
your alarm one o'clock Sunday morning. Then the next morning,
Monday morning, one o'clock will have races three and four.
Then there's quite a gap and the next races five
and six will be next Thursday. Again, all the races
are at one, so races five and six and then
another day or two off, and then Saturday it'll be
races seven and eight if required, and then into the

(07:03):
weekend Saturday, Sunday and Monday, maybe to wrap it up.
They might even have to get to that final one,
which could be Tuesday for Race thirteen. We'll keep an
eye on things there and catch up with all those
on the ground. Chris Reeve our man there with the
New Zealand Herald here on gold Sport, The Country Sport
