Speaker 1 (00:00):
Motorsport on the Country Sport Breakfast powered by CRC five
five six made right here in New Zealand.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Well time on the show now to talk motor sport
and it's motorsport's equivalent of the Melbourne Cup. It's the
Baththurst one thousand six New Zealanders versus forty six Australians.
That's how the fields made up. And one of those
Keiwiz is Andre Heinngartner who joined us on the show
this morning. Andre, good morning, Hi, how you very very well?

(00:29):
Thank you a bit out numbered by the Aussies, really,
aren't we?

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Yeah, that's right though we punched well above our weight,
so don't you worry.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Absolutely well. We are in a way the defending champions
really with Richie stand Away. So let's talk about the
build up for you. What's it been like for you
and I guess you co drive a Deckland Fraser.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Yeah, it's been good. It's always a big week. You know,
yesterday had a lot of media stuff and then obviously
today is starting or you know, getting into some testing
in the next couple of days. So it's it's really
great event. That's amazing crowd. We did the track to
town drive, which is awesome, and you know, there's a
line of people and it's awesome to see everyone out

(01:08):
and about and a bit of a festival type thing.
Had the pit Stop challenge, So it's a great event
just to come to and be a part of. And yeah,
it's just great. I think we all sort of when
it gets close and closer to batter start getting that
warm and fuzzy feeling inside and really start looking forward
to it.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
I noticed a Facebook page a post of yours and
you said that the simulator is a crucial part of
your preparation for any race events. Do you spend a
lot of time in the simulator going round Mount Panorama?

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Yeah, spent about twelve hours previous event a little while
just doing lapse and did our whole virtual bath US
one thousand last or week and a half ago, So yeah,
for sure, there's a lot of prep that goes into it,
and yeah, just looking forward to now getting stuck into
the actual driving.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
It's a hell of a technical track to drive, isn't it.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
Yeah, one hundred percent. So it's one of the toughest
tracks in the world. I think it's one of the
ones that everyone wants to drive. It doesn't matter where
you're from, you know the race and you'd most likely
watch it. So yeah, it's just a great event. The
tracks nally it's a bit of a street circuit, but
the amount of undulation and up and down when you
go up and down the hill is quite incredible every

(02:18):
time you walk it. It's a bit breasttaking, and for
sure TV doesn't do it justice.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
And going through down through the Dipper places like that,
I mean that you must have your heart in your
mouth at times.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Yeah, you for sure do. It's interesting that it actually
doesn't do the TV doesn't do it any justice at all,
and you often forget to actually breathe when you're on
your first two laps, you get to the bottom of
the hill, you're like, oh god, I'm out of breath.
But yeah, it's always a great challenge and as a
driver doesn't get much better.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
So tell us a little bit about your sharing the
drive and the Chivy Camaro out of Brad Jones racing
with Deckland Fraser. Tell us a little bit about Declan.

Speaker 1 (02:58):
Yeah, so Declan Fraser was the main game driver last
year and yeah, he obviously was without a main drive
this year, so we managed to secure him as a
co drive. That's really good to have someone of his
caliber and someone who's you know, very very speedy as
a co driver, so it's one less thing you need
to worry about. And he did a great job at Sandown,
and yeah, hopefully we can have another strong one this

(03:19):
week and I'm sure, I'm sure everything will be lined
up for that.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
I hate to talk about last year, but I think
you only made it to about what lap sixty eight
are thereabouts? Last year? What went wrong?

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Yeah, the last couple of years, I have only done
a total of about thirty laps, so I haven't been great.
The year before my co driver got taken out, and
then yeah, last year the engine blew up last year,
so yeah, not great, not had a great run. But
look we're putting all that behind us and just looking
forward to this year. We're going to be pushing pretty
hard to get on the podium or win, so you know,

(03:51):
that's our goal and it doesn't really matter what's happened before.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Andre. What does it take to win a bad.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Thirst, Well, there's yeah, multiple things to getting to the finishes.
Number one, and then obviously having cast speed you know,
for that is also important. Qualifying is important, but not
the end of the world. But it's making sure you
have a fast car on that last part of the
race where you can make Hay well the truck sort
of calling down and stuff like that. So yeah, there's

(04:17):
a bit to it. It's a big week, lots of testing,
lots of preparation, so you know you're quite emotionally attached
to the result by the time because Sunday comes.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Let's talk about the championship for next year as well.
You'll be returning to Tappa where you won that round there.
But next year there's a change in the championship, isn't
It's going to be split into three segments, the spread
Cup and then we'll have the in Duro races and
then there's sort of a grand finale. What are your
thoughts on that.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
Yeah, it's good, it's something something new, I think, you know,
obviously everything's got to evolve over time. And yeah, here
in Australia the finals is a big thing. Obviously there's
big finals and main sports here like AFL and rugby league.
So just trying to jump on that a bit, I guess,
and yeah, I think it'll be good, add some excitement

(05:04):
you won't know who necessarily is going to win the
championship come into the last race. You know, it could
be very unpredictable. So yeah, it's great for the championship.
You know, you never know how it's going to go
until we actually play it out. But thortfully speaking, it
could be a very good thing. So I think it's
exciting just to change it up and try something new
for the sport.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Andre's a kid growing up in Auckland. Do you pinch
yourself now thinking I'm actually driving in this great race
when you used to watch it on TV?

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Yeah, one hundred percent. You know, this is my tense
Bathist one thousand, which is pretty pretty mental if you
think about it. You know, just being a kid from
East Temmockey in Auckland, used to yeah, watch the Bathist
one thousand, used to have my simulator next to the
TV and used to load up Bathist on that and
pretend I was, you know, racing the race with him,
and yeah, to sort of go from that and you know,

(05:53):
dreaming of racing supercars to now being my tense Bathist.
You know, sometimes you can get caught up in the
emotion of racing team and lose sight of you know
what you're actually doing. But yeah, I'm very blessed, very
lucky to be in the business, shoon I am. And yeah,
just I guess as I'm getting a bit older to
start appreciating these things a bit more.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Well, you've still got a few races in you because
Craig Lownds is competing in his thirty first Bathhurst, so
you've got a bit of catching up to catch the legend, mate.
But we wish you the very best of luck for
the weekend.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah, awesome, thanks mate.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
That's andrehn Gartner joining us and he'll be back on
track again. Just after mid day to day New Zealand time,
they have their their third practice session that'll last four
an hour. Then practice number four again is just after
three o'clock this afternoon, and then the all important Supercars
qualifying to decide well the grid from eleven to twenty six,

(06:45):
but also who's going to be in the top ten
shootout that happens at a quarter past six this evening
New Zealand time, So that's qualifying, and then there's another
practice session tomorrow at mid day, a couple more practice
sessions actually, and then the top ten shootout happens at
five past seven tomorrow evening, New Zealand time. He's in

(07:07):
New Zealand time. And then, of course the Great Race
Woo one thirty Sunday afternoon, one thousand kilometers, one hundred
and sixty one lapse
