Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the sports field to the shearing shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on gold Sport.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Well talking the talking rugby now and what a weekend
of rugby it's been. From Bunnings NPC quarter final matches,
upsets in Heartland competition, black Ferns finishing the WXV one
competition with the win over France, so that was a
nail bider at times. Joining us on the CSP this morning,
a voice of rugby on the radio, Elliott Smith Morning.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Elliott get abk. Good to catch up.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Let's talk about the Black Ferns running out thirty nine
to fourteen winners. But boy, they were made to work
for it, weren't they.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Oh they're certainly were. They were in France. Are a
good team, probably not as good as they've been in
the last couple of years, but they put them to
the swords. Thought at times in the first half and
that twenty to fourteen upper half time the Blackburns had
the advantage, but it really could have gone either way,
but crititson Black fans. They came out in the second
(00:57):
spell and killed the game off with a couple of
the quick tries, then another shortly after it to extend
the lead out to thirty nine to fourteen, and at
that point they were appearing quite dominant and probably could
have run away with the extended that scoreline app even further.
But I think the win is the main thing for
the Black Ferns after the two losses to England and
(01:20):
the lost to Ireland and the WXV just to get
a win on the board to end the season on
somewhat of them high heading into next year's World Cup.
I still think there's more questions and answers around the
makeup of the best fifteen and the best twenty three
for the Black Ferns as they head into World Cup year.
But they needed a win and they got one against France,
(01:42):
and I think that's the main thing for the Blackburns.
Yesterday morning, in the course.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Of that WXV one tournament, do you think they've improved?
You know, those two losses and then to go up
against franst could you see an improvement.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Yesterday morning was an improvement I saw compared to the
last couple of weeks. But France defends in a different
way to England. England's are more in your faith and
really get that line speed going France sit off a
little bit more and they allowed the Black Friends a
few more opportunities. I thought the Black Friends played well
(02:19):
at Twickenham, and they meet the English side about three
or four weeks ago and then went into the wxteen
and I thought it took a big step backwards against Ireland.
I thought they were disappointing again against England last week.
So I think it was a step forward yesterday morning.
But I still think that there are some real questions
around the side of defense and indeed how they try
(02:41):
and match it up against some of those teams that
are right in your face like England's, that are putting
pressure on throughout the eighty minutes. So there's plenty of
questions around the best makeup of the team. There's some
standout players and the far Apartment Cup this year. We've
still got a super rug the awpicky campaign to go
through next year before the World Cup Sports picked, but
(03:02):
there isn't much time and there's a lot of questions
for Alan Bunting and as coaching team as they headed
the summer.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Absolutely all right, well, let's talk the NPC now and
we start off with Friday Nights Clash. It was the
wonderful battle of the two all black halfbacks. Wellington hosting
Counties and Wellie did what they had to do, winning
twenty nine to fourteen, didn't they They did.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Yeah. I thought this was a good performance from Wellington
in the ends and Counties sort of threshened at times
to come a little bit closer to them and really
put the heat on. But Wellington did well. I thought
to keep them at arms length and just broke the
game open in the second spell with a couple of
well taken tries t J Pett and Ara scoring a
(03:44):
nice one and it just kept Counties at arms lengths
when they were threatening a comeback. So I thought this
was a good win from Wellington. T de pet and
Ara's last game at Guy Stadium, which we thought was
actually a few weeks ago, but he managed to sneak
another one in the I thought a good performance from Wellington.
They seemed to be peaking at the right point of
(04:06):
the season. County I thought through everything at them, but
just lacked a little polish at times. They had so
much more throughout that game, but just clent't quote. Now
they're attacking opportunities. I think that'll be the thing that
rings in their their ears when they reviewed the games
that they didn't have thing toy ball and have to
win the game, but just went out ale and were
(04:27):
good enough to ice some of those opportunities. When Wellington
got Theers their chances in the county's red zone, they
took them. I think we're good for the win.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Saturday afternoon, I was tarrong of Demain to see the
Battle of the Bays and the Bay have plenty left
it till the very last minute, but they got up
to beat Hawks Bay winning nineteen seventeen. What'd you make
of that result?
Speaker 1 (04:48):
This is a cracking game. I thought that the pick
of the matches for me maybe later in the day
as well, was a crack at But I thought, thing
go on battle between these two sides, you know, the
Battle of the Bays that is always just want. We
didn't get one at this point of the year, and
then to get one on a knockout n PC match
(05:09):
was pretty special. I thought that it just it was
just the game of momentum and momentum schemes and it
went back and forth through a on another day. How
they could have won. They got a lot of both
players back that were missing through injury through the middle
part of this season, and they lost ran for at
the hip where they got them back right in time,
and look it was it was a knife age game.
(05:31):
But I thought that fact that they have plenty probably
with a bit of team uh across the game mates
and preserved their win. But as as you said, they
left it incredibly late, but they got the got the
victory and looked at they'll host a knockout game again
this week and home advantage pretty important games. Was there
A couple of teams got on the road and win
(05:53):
this weekend. But you can stay at home in your
home beds. That is a real benefit to as it
head into the pointing to the season.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
Two points in that game, and then Saturday night, why
Cuto headed to New Plymouth and upset defending champions and
ren Philly. She would hold his Taranaki by one point
fifteen fourteen.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
Yeah, I mean, I don't know how much of this
is that the Vamphilly shield came over of the last
week it Taranaki, or whether it was just a good
white cut of performance, but I thought what kinda were
excellent on the opening twenty five thirty minutes, just asserted
themselves into the game really really nicely and got that
Scotball prescire going on Totanucky at Eros Stadium. I thought
(06:34):
that was really really important deserve because Sudden Nucky wanted
to take control of that game and White cutto just
didn't allow them to do it. And some standout performances.
I thought Oli Nathis moving to the white wing after
playing flank during the season, labbing a try in the
first well. I thought he was very very good and
(06:56):
looked like a potential sort of hybrid player that he
could potentially who's very nicely and maybe the Chiefs on
the bench or similar in the coming seasons. But I
thought the fifteen mil up. You know that that Chrop
goal was a bit of wisdom from the py Cook
Savage as well, and ultimately that was the winner. You know,
it came out of nothing from a restart and the
(07:18):
com cell banked over from forty five out and that
proved to be the difference. When Tartanuki came back into
didn't quite get into the game until the second spell.
When they did, they looked threatening and Josh shake him
and a number of other players began to work their magic.
That it was just a case of too little, too lazy,
that that slow start really did cost them in the end,
(07:41):
and what kind of we're deserving of the victory.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
We went from one to two point results to yesterday's
match Tasman. I think maybe some of the players went
to Nelson rather than Blenham. It didn't seem like they
They showed up record score sixty two fourteen to their
big brothers.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Care Toory, yeshouldn't he was coming look at the sheet
during the week and thought, well, Canterbury the charms of
an upset here given them the all black players that
they've got back, and Tasman missing a couple of players
to the injury lost taking black at her on game day.
Use today as well, and we wait to hear news
of how that it made. He might affect the all
black squad heading north as well. But I did not
(08:21):
see Canterbury putting Tataman to the sword like that, absolutely
demolishing them. It was Canterbury winding the clock back to
that dominant run of titles they had in the twenty tens.
They were ruthless, they were in fantic and the players
stood up the likes of Dallas Mactard and Brandon Inn
in the midfield. I thought it was superb. George Bell
(08:44):
I thought that a good game, and Hooker and Billy
Harmon Tanna superb MPC season once again, a final one
before we get us in Japan. But again it was
all about that fast. But that wasn't before Tasman could realize.
So we sneel down on the school board and the
game was effectively done. Yeah it was. It was a
shock shot win for a Canterburg by that magnetu. But
(09:06):
you know they're finding their eat at the riting end
of the season. It was only what three weeks ago
they got belted by will Harbor. How they're sort of
finally feed again in the season and they in the
Canterbury game or both semi finals really will be fantastic.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Yeah, so the result of that game sixty two to fourteen.
But yeah, this coming Saturday, four o'clock out of the
domain again Bay of PD Canterbury, who are you picking
in that one?
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Look? I think they have plenty on home advantage and
just the fact that they have been so good throughout
the season to get the victory, and and also remembering
the Canterbury going to lose probably from my understanding, some
of those All Blacks players as well, back to the
national camp and they were so good some of those
players yesterday. So might be madam seeing how the two
twenty three shake up before making a final prediction at
(09:52):
the States. But we're going to give it to the Steamers.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Good on you, We're with you there. And semi final
number two well into it'll be hosting why Katow who
wins that one?
Speaker 1 (10:03):
Well, it's a similar vain to the other game. You know,
Bunton's not going to have t J. Pettinara in the next.
They're probably not going to have Billy prop he'll be
going north as well. I think I don't know that
they'll be on a late play now, so you'll lose
those players and then all of a sudden that evans
right up. But what kind of way you know, look,
Jacobson either and have a penny feet now. So on
(10:24):
the basis of home advantage and I'm going to give
Wellington get the noses in front and say that they'll
get the job done and it'll be the home teams
winning both of the semifinals.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Alrighty, good one, Elliott. We'll look forward to chatting later
in the week. Thank you so much, have a great day.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
Sounds for good cheers me go Elliot.
