Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the sports field to the shearing shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport The.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Changel Sundays, Time to Talk the America's Cup. Now and

(00:47):
Team New Zealand have rounded the half waymark in their
America's Cup defense. They've claimed a twenty three second victory
over Britannia to take a four nil lead in the
first to seven series off the coast of Salona. The
New Zealand based syndicate was faster on average upwind and downward,
and that's despite the Brits owned outfit having a slight

(01:08):
advantage off the start line. And that victory cement skipper
Peter Berling as the winningest America's Cup helmsman on nineteen victory,
surpassing Jimmy Spittle's seventeen. Joining us from the dock of
the Bay and a man who is working very hard
over there out of Barcelona is Jesse Church Morning.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Jesse, good day.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
How are you going very well? I should have said, ola,
really on you so, Illa Sen, You're that's a pretty
interesting that's a pretty interesting stant for Peter Berling the
winningest America's Cup helmsman.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
Now it's the first time I've heard that actually, So yeah,
you had me, you had my eyebrows going up there
on the other end of the phone. I mean, yeah,
And it's crazy to think that the age gap between
Jimmy Spidle and Peter Berlin right now, Jimmy's been doing
this thing for about seventeen more years than than Pete has.
So I mean, imagine where he's going to be if

(02:00):
he keeps this up in seventeen years. That's a crazy stat.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
So, Team New Zealand up four Nilla's I mentioned, do
you think the prospect of a seven zero is well
and truly on the cards? Now?

Speaker 4 (02:12):
I mean it's not the first time a sweep's been
on the cards, you know.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
I think we've been blessed by some quite exciting score
lines in the last few America's Cups. But you know,
you think back to the early two thousands, sweeps were
more more common than not, and the way the boat's
going at the moment, and you look at the conditions
ahead and the way we've performed in the lightier conditions
against them, you'd have to think that unless something dramatic changes,

(02:40):
seven nillas is definitely on the cards.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
We didn't see that the start box drama that we
saw yesterday. In fact, I believe both boats stayed away
from each other.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Was that right?

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Yeah, well away, And I asked the question as you
asked racing to the teams. Was there a bit of,
you know, an agreement, Look we're in battle here, but yes,
there was a bit closer comfort for both teams, and
they both said no, they were keen to get into it.
And the Anios team actually said we were key to
take the fight to them and they didn't want a

(03:14):
piece of us, and we won the start. They kind
of made a statement that it was a victory off
the start to them, and I bounced back with yeah,
the only victory you had today. But you know, I
think they should take a bit away from that Anios
Britannia that they did start well. The boat looks to
be going quite strong, but they need to be better

(03:37):
than strong. They need to be absolutely perfect if they
want to beat them or it's Team New Zealand, because
the reality is that at the moment they they they're
well and truly behind. Boat speed is behind and the
way the same as the boat isn't up to the
standard of what Team New Zealand's putting out there right now.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
You think the Brits can fix that. I mean they've
got a couple of days off now. They don't race
again until Thursday, do they.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, so take a day off. As we know in
the Americus cuts, thinking back to San Francisco in twenty thirteen,
a lot can change overnight. I don't think we're going
to see anything is quite as dramatic as that. But
these boats are absolute machines. And what happens within the boat,
that the software and the way the boat talks to

(04:20):
each other through maneuvers, and the linkages between one button
being pushed and then five different things happening in automation
is really down to a fine art and it doesn't
take much to get a whole lot more performance out
of the boat. So they'll be going through all the numbers,
showing over everything that Emirates Team New Zealand's doing, looking

(04:41):
at where they can improve, and I have no doubt
they'll come back better in forty eight hours. But on
the flip side, Emirates Tew New Zealand's going to do
exactly the same thing, and I have no doubt they
will take a jump. So emmorates have that advantage of
a dal tomorrow as well, so both teams are going
to come back stronger come Wednesday.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
So Ben Ainsley doesn't seem to like key We commentators
how you are handling him in the press conferences.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
Fortunately I've dodged Ben's wrapped so far. Probably that the
closest moment was when I did the press conference and
had to flip the coin to see who was going
to enter from port and race one, who was going
to have first entry, And as I flipped the coin
onto the stage, it landed on its side and rolled
across the stage under Ben Ainsley's seat and then and

(05:30):
then actually went under the trophy. So I had to
go over and ask Ben or you know it's under here,
I'll pull it out.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
What is that? Is that a tail?

Speaker 3 (05:39):
And we had a moment there. So that's about as
close quarters I've got to be Namesley so far. But
fortunately he didn't let loose on me in that moment.
But look, we're only halfway through this thing, so I'm
sure there might be a bit left in his tank.
To give a bit more to some Kiwi commentators.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
You're on the ground for the Cup. You've been working
over the the last ten weeks or so. In comparison
to Walkland a couple of years ago, what's the major
difference is for the fans or is it pretty similar.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Now? I'd say the big difference is probably the on
water experience. And I mean in New Zealand, where a
city of nautical now and everyone's out there and they've
got a boat, whether it's a small, little timmy or
something a bit bigger, you just kind of get out
there and make the most of it. Whereas here in
Barcelona it's a bit more choppy, there's way more sea

(06:31):
state out there, so there's a lot less boats out
on the race course. But in terms of the people
on the ground and the race villages and fan zones,
I mean, we're in one of the busiest, most visited
cities in the world, one of the most beautiful cities
in the world, and people on the ground have really
turned out. I've just been completely blown away by the

(06:51):
support right throughout the competition from fans from all the
teams from and then in the last couple of days
New Zealand really has own up. It's actually genuinely blown
me away just how much it feels like New Zealand
has got behind this event, so as a key we
who you know, I'll be honest, was a bit heartbroken

(07:12):
when the cup was hidden away or offshore. I look
at what we've got up here now and New Zealand
on display to the world. I think it's great for
great for everyone, really great for New Zealand and I'm
proud to have it here.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Fantastic. All right, Jesse, we'll talk again soon, but thank
you for joining us. So I have a couple of
days off and we'll talk later.

Speaker 4 (07:36):
Awesome cheers Bkah.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
So Races three and four done and dust did we
lead for zip? Races five and sex are going to
be happening in the early hours of Thursday morning again
one o'clock to race there and then another day off
and then they go into the weekend. Saturday Races seven
and eight could be the deciders, and then if they
have to go into Sunday, they'll be racing Sunday and Monday.

(08:12):
Don't see that
