Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on
Gold Sport.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Talking Heartland Rugby now on the show, where both the
Meads and Lahaure Cup finals are this weekend. In the
Meads Cup it's Saturday eight Thames Valley the Swamp Foxes
hosting Mid Canterbury the Giant Killers, and Sunday is the
Lahure Cup Final. It's King Country hosting West Coast. Joining
us on the show this morning. Out of the West
(00:28):
Coast is their coach Sean Cuton's morning.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Sean, Hey, good morning, Hell are you mate?
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Good mate? Good? So, before we look ahead to the
final this weekend, let's talk about last weekend's mention from
a coach's point of view, fifty two to fifty one
winning over hoofinu Capany took us through what it was
like for you.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
I wasn't watching May. Yeah it was. Yeah, it was
a bit of a roller coaster, that's for sure, and
yeah but exciting. We keep the crowd there right to
the end and yeah boys going away with a lolly,
so we're happy.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
Absolutely did you what did you watch much film afterwards
to sort of see where you got it right or wrong?
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Yeah? I did we reviewed the game, and yeah, straight
after the game, I thought, Craigie, no one's tackling out there,
and the point of reviewing, you know, the techle was
sort of there. But you know the post meet has
made after content are pretty high, so we were passive,
I think from both teams. Yeah, it was was pretty exciting.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Nonetheless, one hundred what was it, one hundred and three
point scored in the game.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
Yeah, but it gave a basketball wasn't it.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Yeah, it was really was a basketball score. So you're
playing away this weekend. Will it have an effect on
the guys?
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Yeah, Well, it's always good to be a home, especially
with your support crew and the crowd, and but yeah,
coasts to travel all up and down there anyway, so
we'll have hopefully have some good support there and the
boys are used to traveling and a week out, yeah,
hopefully not so.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
If folks on you the Heartland and I love watching
Heartland and your side. Who are a few of the
key players to look out for in that match on Sunday?
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Ah, well, yeah, there it's quite a few across the board. Obviously,
we've got a veteran in the middle there at the hooker,
Troy t Alfree, he's gone well, I think he's one
hundred and seven games. He's a record holder for the
most games for the coast. We've got some boys and
the walking department with Ethan Taylor and yeah on the
(02:39):
back say, yeah, some good boys out there too. He'll
go out out wide. You've got Jamie Gallen who's he's
sat to carve up to weave it. He's coming right
at the inod season too. Hopefully it carries on through.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
What's the state of rugby like on the coast? I mean,
is club rugby still really strong down there?
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Yeah, they love if you know, there's always a good
crowd at the club and the club games as well.
And yeah, it's you know, there's six times their plan
and they've been doing it for year after year, and yeah,
this big test coming through, it's going to concentrate and
developing them a bit more and so we can keep
(03:19):
giving these opportunities.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
I guess the biggest thing, and I've spoken about it
with other coaches and Heartland rugby is effect, you know,
getting the boys there. They're all amateurs, aren't they. They're
all out doing manual jobs either on farms or tradees
or whatever. So getting them to training, that's always a challenge,
isn't it.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
Yeah, that's right. They sacrifice a lot, you know, it's
time with your families and other things they can be doing.
And yeah, so they're putting a lot online to come
and come and play. But that's what they want to
do for their province and also their bosses. You know,
we've got our travel sometimes Friday morning and that's as
the odd day off here and there, and generally speaking,
(03:58):
most of the bosses are riding behind them, which it's great,
great province.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Yeah, are you able to select most of the squad
from the region or do you have to look a
little wider.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Yeah, there's some guys that come and play from outside
the region. You know, they with an eye to make
the Heartland team. Yeah, so you know, if they're playing
and they're eligible, we will selete them. You know, if
they're up to scratch, that's for sure. And then you're
allowed the imports and you play of origin, so we
hear those as well.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Yeah, so you've studied, I guess you've had a look
at the king country side for that final. So what
are they doing. Well, it's got them to where they are.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
They've got a good pack. They always say, I've got
a good pack up there, and they also have some
some resorts are out wide, and then they've got a
big stick of five who gets some GameLine And yeah,
they're pretty much offload kings to be feared with playing
the NBA out there another basketball game. But I don't
(05:00):
know if you're ready for another one or high score.
But yeah, we've got to put them on the ground. Probably.
It's probably basic.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
And added pressure as well for you guys, because you're
defending little more cup champions, aren't you.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Here we are, I don't know if we feel the
preasure of that or more of a privilege. Really, we've
we've loved having it, and yeah we want to hold
onto that. But yeah, we've just got to go there
and throw everything at it, not looking at cups or
any afterwards. Early, just the game by game scenario.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Sean, what's the plan between now and in Sunday for
that big final?
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Yeah, all the week's changed the with it. So we
just pushed everything out of day training tonight. So on
base of myth and so I whip over the coast tonight,
get the boys going, Yeah, and then we cruise up
there on Saturday, and yeah, try and be low key
and keep the boys, yeah, over stimulate them hopefully.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
That's pretty amazing. You're based in Methven, you have to
travel over to the coast to coach the boys.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Yeah, yeah, I'm trying to get over there at least
once a week or twice sometimes. But we've also got
really good actually staff over there. Toy as a player coach,
so Teich howefully does his work over there. And yeah,
we've got Jared Mitchell here as well, and then the
other managers and Luke and Sam says, yeah, got a
(06:29):
good crew there looking after the scene. If I don't
make it love.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
It, will there be mini fans, do you know, making
the trip up from the coast to go and see
that final in the king Country?
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Dude, what springs here? So yeah, I'd say there's going
to be and we'll paint it red and white. Hopefully
we can be real loud.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Absolutely wishing you the very very best, Sean, all the best,
thanks for joining us, mate.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Hey, cheers, Briant.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Have everyone absolute pleasure, So look forward to that. One
will be on Sky TV I think two o'clock kickoff
on Sunday afternoon. Shawn Cutton's the West Coast coach. Just
this is something special about Heartland rugby, isn't it really?
Just a shame the Butcher boys from Wanganui got knocked
out by Thames Valley. It's always
