Speaker 1 (00:00):
The country sport, breakfast netball, short session with the vonn
Willering go Gold Gold You Zealand up flying and they
got to claim victory for the Black Dress and they're
ecstatic they've.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Won it by fourteen goals.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Would you believe it?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (00:19):
What a night out in Wellington? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Would you believe it? Indeed, opening triumph for the Silver
Ferns over the Diamonds in the opening match of that
for match series in the Constellation Cup, beating Australia sixty
four point fifty. Von Willaring was on the call with
Malcolm Jordan. Did you believe it? Yvon?

Speaker 1 (00:36):
How about that? Now? I cannot sit here and say yes,
I can believe that absolutely. I don't think anyone would
have predicted that. To be fair, I did think that
I did predict the Ferns were going to win it.
I don't know why, but I did think that they
were going to win it. But Jeep's not by that margin.
But what I was really interested in was a total reversal.

(00:58):
Was normally it's the ferns that make the mistakes, it's
the ferns that made the substitution, and that was evident
in the Tiny Jamison Trophy and what did we see? Instead,
Australia played their whole bench. They had no answers either
to the Ferns attack or defense for that matter. So yeah, interesting. First,
I mean, what unbelievable the second quarter? What's seventeen to nine?

(01:23):
And I looked at that and I'm going, Wow, that's it.
Australia's going to come back. And they did fifteen thirteen
in that third and I'm going, oh, no, here we
go again. And then what did the Ferns do that
seventeen ten in that last quarter. I'll tell you Australia
had no answer. And I looked at that game and
I'm going, wow, what a reversal in that. Now, keep

(01:45):
it in perspective. I think the Ferns absolutely played well.
I thought that they set the tone and they stuck
to that quite a number of They were heavily penalized
in the encircled Berger and Jackson were heavily penalized. The
umpires will look at you know, but on the whole, wow,
it was just unreal. But Australia came out at the

(02:05):
end and said, oh, we just didn't play well. And
they didn't, but some of that was forced on them
by the Ferns.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
I was just going to ask you, so, what changed
from the last time the Ferns played to the match
last night. Did you notice any noticeable changes?

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah. I was going to say
this was the team possessed. No, they honestly just their
whole intenses, their whole approach to the game was different. Yes,
they started off quite relaxed, and their pre match and
their warm up they looked quite relaxed. But once they
took to the court, they were there for business. And

(02:41):
it was interesting because even in that first quarter Australia
was leading by two or three goals. But you know
I looked at that, I'm going, oh no, here we go.
But the Ferns would not allow them to take, you know,
take dominance there. And that's why the Ferns still won
at seventeen sixteen. And that went right throughout the game.

(03:01):
And I just thought, you know, a Poi I thought
was excellent in the wing attack position. I thought they
would start though Brian because she was actually quite did
a pretty good job against the England in the tiny
Jemison series. But POI was on at wing attack. I
liked her speed and I think the reason one of
the reasons she was on one was exactly for that,

(03:23):
because she was being marked by Jamie le Price, who
really likes the niggle and do a lot of the
one on one defense and I just think POI was
too fast for her and so that situation was avoided
in that. But the one thing I couldn't believe. I
was so impressed Hefferlin actually got an intercept Officinger pass
off and that is something that I've looked at in

(03:44):
the past as well, and it was just such a clean,
clean intercept and I looked at that and I'm going, Yep,
she's back, because I thought she had a really quiet
series in the Tiny Jemson, So I think maybe they
had words spoken to them and you know, as a
collect the unit, but also individually and it was time
for them to come out and really show their work.

(04:05):
And they caught Australia napping and you know, certainly at
the start, but even throughout the game they had no
answer to Grace Minweki. And part of that as much
as like she got fifty out of fifty three, But
you can't just put it on her, because I think
the feeding that went into her was excellent because Bruce
just didn't even get her hand to it. The only

(04:28):
intercept Bruce got was actually over near the transverse line,
so it was also in the feeding to Grace miwiki. Yeah,
she's a tall target in the back and when the
Ferns had no one to pass too, absolutely they simply
passed to her, you know. But still it is also
about the rest of the team, so yeah, interesting And

(04:49):
for Australia, I mean Austin in particular at the goal
attack she's normally very very accurate and very confident. She
only got nine out of fourteen and at times she
could see just the handover by Kelly Jackson really affected
her affected Conan as well. And in fact they used
all four of their shooters. New zealanm had sixty eight

(05:10):
attempts and Australia still had sixty two attempts, which surprised
me because when you see that scoreline, you go, whoa,
you know, but appreciate if New Zealand missed, and boy
they didn't miss many, because like I said, Grace ninety
fifty out of fifty three, but Atchanacio got fourteen out
of fifteen. And what I loved about her game is

(05:32):
that she took long range shots west men. You know
that the Australian defenders had to mark both people, and
you know, they tried different combinations in there. I mean
Clowe went on, Bruce bo was on, Arianng was on,
so you know, and they just did not have any
answers there. But yeah, it's interesting when Australia missed the
shots and they still had sixty two attempts. When they missed,

(05:55):
often they did not get the rebound because obviously Kelly Jackson,
you know, had that height advantage. And it surprised me
that they still had sixty two attempts because some of
the errors they made were what I call unforced errors.
But certainly give it to the silver Ferns deserve that victory.
I had no no inkling that it was going to

(06:17):
be by that margin, and I don't think they did either,
so but yeah, I just loved the last quarter and
the fact they stuck to it because you know, like
I said, thirteen fifteen in that third quarter and I'm going, oh, no,
here we go, you know, And I think Australia did
get within four or five at one stage later in
the game, but you know, New Zealand held it together

(06:39):
and you could see they were a team on a mission.
They caught Australia napping and it's going to be relliant.
I'm really looking forward to the to the second test
because that will will be the telling factor, you know what.
That's well, I hate to say that it wasn't just
one I won off, you know, because they caught Australia napping,
because actually the Ferns deserve the winds simple as that.

(07:03):
They were the better team on the night.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Absolutely just exactly what I was going to say. So
we look forward to Wednesday night, Yvonne, and hopefully the
Ferns can make it too from too so far.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
Yeah, well they've got now got the confidence, haven't they.
You know, they're looking at that and they're going listen,
we took it to Australia, you know. And also, and
I know I'm one of the ones guilty for mentioning it,
but New Zealand is now third in the world according
to the rankings that wants it well worth of either,
so they've got lots of fuel there. So yeah, I
really would like to see what happens in that second test,

(07:35):
just to see exactly where the ferns stit now.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Look forward to your call with Malcolm Jordan on Wednesday
night here on gold Sport. Thank you so much. Yvonne
