They posted 158 for five after getting sent in.

Amelia Kerr, the woman of the match and tournament, top-scored with 43 and returned figures of three for 24 to help dismiss the Proteas for 126.

The victory marks their first international silverware since the 50-over title in 2000.

Meanwhile, in Bengaluru, the Black Caps have completed a third test win across almost 69 years in India.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Joining us this morning. One very happy commentator, Brian Model
joins us the voice of New Zealand cricket, on the
back of the White Ferns winning their maiden TEA twenty
Cricket World Cup beating South Africa by thirty two runs
in Dubai this morning. Ward's good morning, Lord.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Yeah, what a wonderful seventy two hours of cricket for
New Zealand teams to have major victories and for the
Whitefan to complete their win, particularly against the expectations of
many people, including me. I didn't believe on their record
they had a chance. You know, we'd lose ten straight.
But you know it built the strength within them and

(00:42):
I suppose from adversity come belief and success and may
they deserve or enjoyed what they deserve.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
It was a great performance by the White Fans two
against South Africa, who beat Australia a few days ago too,
wasn't it.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
It wasn't particularly with the bat by the White Fans
to score one hundred and fifty eight that certainly put
scoreboard pressure on any side chasing. I think South Africa
might have thought that it might not have been quite
so bad. But with Baits and well the Kerr after
the dismissal of Plumber getting the innings established, it was
left to Halliday and Kerr who scored the big runs

(01:17):
at the end, and they put on a partnership that
really took the score through from seventy to one hundred
and twenty seven and just laid that foundation and the
bowlers managed to get it back from what was a
good start by South Africa. Their experienced players gave them
the foundation there atings needed and they're good players will

(01:38):
Vart Marazon cap as well. But you know, it was
a good team effort from the Dizilders. Everybody played their
part and good luck to them. They deserved the success.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
I think we saw there too during that match that
catchers can win matches, which they did. I mean, I
think we just dropped one catch, Susie Baits. But apart
from that, we were pretty good with the hands, weren't we.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Yeah, in a tournament where catchers were hard to take,
they had something like eighty eight drop catches in the
preliminary stages and you can't get away with that. But
one of the better catching sites in terms of the
percentage was New Zealand. They were second in terms of
taking their catches, so you know, that proves the importance
of fielding.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
And what a great performance by Meely Kerr not only
a Woman of the Match but player of the series
as well.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Well. She's just an outstanding cricketer and she has been.
I mean that's been signaled for the last ten years
from when she was a schoolgirl player and she's only
twenty four to twenty five and she's dominating the world game.
So where she is just an outstanding player. To do
the job with about forty three or thirty eight balls
and then coming in with the legspin and finishing off

(02:46):
the innings just just wonderful. And that just was added
to the team performance because you know, not one player
can do it. The team have to be able to
contribute and they order outstanding.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
The cool thing about it was there are a lot
of new developing cricketers coming through with the White Ferns too.
I mean we've got the old heads there, Sophie Divine,
Susie Bates, but the youngsters really shone too.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Yeah. Well I think they're starting to develop that talent
and the consistency that is required. We saw the spin bollers,
Carson Jonas doing an outstanding job. Rosemary Mare is an
important cog and that we're with the fast bawling and
they've got some others waiting in the wings that can
do the job as well, And that, to me is

(03:32):
the significant part about it all, was that those young players,
of which we don't have a great number of them
in terms of the development of the game, are starting
to produce the kinds of performances that they needed. Tob
lev are outstanding to see them developing, and they've learned
the hardware reckon.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
I mean you alluded to it when we started chatting
earlier this morning. The fact that you know, way back
at the beginning of this tournament we were on the
back of ten losses. We weren't looking good, were we.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
No, the record didn't recommend them, but of course those
losses were against the very best in the world in
England and Australia. Well, they didn't have to play England
and they played Australia in pool play and were beaten
by them. So that was added to the testing times
that they had. But they stood up and managed to
fight through that adversity and have won the awards.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Let's talk about the men's team, and you would have
been with the men's cricket teams over the decades in India,
probably seeing them beaten by India. But suddenly a rare
chapter in New Zealand Test cricket history with an eight
wicket victory in India for the black Caps, and.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
The length of time it's taken to do that, something
like thirty six years, is testament to the difficulty it
is in playing in India. I was there for that
last when the New Zealand beat them at Swan Kadie
Stadium in Mumbai. That was after the Test match where
all the players had been Jeremy Kaney had to go
out and do some fielding, leave the commentary box. And

(05:04):
that was the tour that they came back from losing
that first game to win in the Mumbai So that's
a game to celebrate from the history of the New
Zealand game. And so too is this a performance by
a side that, again I don't believe in many people's
expectations was up for the task, but they've proven us wrong.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Now, I mean, India were embarrassing in their first innings.
What was it all out for forty six or forty
seven runs? So they obviously got a good kick up
the backside for that performance and came back. But it
was too late, really, wasn't it.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
Yeah, they wouldn't make much of a kick. I think
just being out forty six would be the kick you needed.
I don't know that it needs to too many words
about that, but that was brought about by the toss
of the coin, by the fact that New Zealand were
able to field. They were going to back first as well,
according to Tom Latham, but the efforts of Henry and
O'Rourke in running through that Indian top order boy with

(06:01):
some great cricketers in there, that they just cleaned out.
Then the four hundred runs that they scored, the partnership
between Ravendra and Saudi that lifted them out of the
trouble that they could have been in at that stage
two thirty three to seven. Ravendra did an outstanding job
and the Man of the Match award because of his performance.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
How good was he ratching Revendra an unbeaten in seventy
five run third wicket stand as well, So fantastic for him.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Yeah, I mean, he's an outstanding cricketer and he's developed
pretty rapidly from the talent that I think everybody realized
that he had and to be able to take on
the dominvant role batting at number four in the New
Zealand side, you know, because he's had so many different
positions that he's had to bat in short form games
and in the Test match. And there is at number
four producing a century of the highest quality against an

(06:52):
attack against the two best bowlers in world cricket, Ashvin
and jasperd Boomra's.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Amazing, right, Well, take the win, but one swallow does
not make a summer. We've got the second Test to
look forward to. HIV is that Thursday.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
That's Thursday, and if they want to stand a chance
of getting into the final of the World Test Championship,
they've got to win. They just keep winning all the
way through there. That's the challenge that faces all these sides.
New Zealand have lifted themselves in the rankings, but they've
still had a lot more work to do if they're
going to achieve what they're there for, and that's to
get into the final of the World Test Championship.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
It's been a good twenty four hours for New Zealand
cricket wants. Thanks for joining us, mate.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
Have a good day, Oko BK.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
Cheers Brian Model joining us out of Wellington. Here on
