Speaker 1 (00:10):
Well, as we heard yesterday afternoon, Scott Robinson has named
his side to face Japan this coming Saturday. Commentary live
here on Goldsport kickoff just before seven six fifty to
be exact. Joining us on the CSP this morning, A
man on the ground, Elliot Smith. Morning, Elliott, the team's
been named early. What do you make of it?
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Yes, indeed named forty eight hours early. BK interesting scenario,
I believe around logistics of various things here in Tokyo
and just wanting to make sure all the ducks are
in a row. So they've named it early, and it's
an intriguing side preap It's not necessarily surprising because we
knew or at least expected that we were going to
get some changes to this team. Players that we need
(00:52):
to see get some game time. You think of Sam
penny Fee now, for example, who started the year as
the starting blindside flanker, then fell out of favor a
little bit. He gets an opportunity this week and Royguard
and Steven Petafetta coming back from injury to any game
time at TESL level to find out what they're capable
of them where they're at ahead of the four tests
(01:13):
in Europe to come from next weekend, and other balancing
acts around some of those players getting game time as well.
The front row for example, and how huge is that
front row on either side of the scrum. The two
bookends two hundred and eighty kgs between tamighty Williams and
Pasili Ortosa. Then there's a soulful Mu in the middle,
so plenty of size. But it's about getting those players
(01:36):
game time this week and all in all pretty balanced,
perhaps a little bit more of a smattering of experience,
I guess than maybe I was expecting. You're the Sam
Kaine who, just as fresh off maker is one hundredth
test in Wellington. He gets an opportunity this week. And
you know the All Blacks have got three players that
(01:56):
are all capable of playing open side back home in
New Zealand injured, so that may be horses for courses selection.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
It's serious to what that is? A serious serious forward pack.
Peter Luckeye and Rubin Love poised for debus. How deserving are.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
They well I think very deserving. Peter Lucky and Rubin
Love have impressed through multiple Super Rugby seasons now. Peter
Lucky very very unlucky not to be included in the
initial traveling squad for this five Test series before he
got the call up with those loose forward injuries. He's
been around the team at points this year and has
(02:34):
just been exceptional in every competition that he's played Super
Rugby and indeed NPC level for Wellington he was very
very good again, So he gets a chance potentially off
the bench and he's a player of immense promise that
could add a lot to that loose Ford trio, the
structure of which I think is still up in the
year as to the best mix of players at six,
(02:57):
seven and eight. So huge opportunity for Peter Luck to
show what he is capable of this weekend. And then
Ruben Love has been a player of immense promise for
a few seasons now and gets his chance off the
bench as well. Such an exciting player, ability to run
it out from the back of kicking game as well.
Looking forward to seeing what he might be able to
do on a dry track in Yokohama this weekend.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
And Elliott elsewhere. What other selections are intriguing, Well.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Not so much intriguing. I suppose you look at the
team and go Patrick twey plot To started the year
as first choice Locke. He is captain this week and
very very strong leader Patrick thwey plot too, but has
taken the second row spot away from him this week,
so also over the course of this year. So he's
a player that you know will want to prove a
(03:48):
point and with those big tests to come in the
European portion of this Tourer chance to Patrick thwey Ploto
just to sort of wave his hand and go, hey, selectors,
don't forget about me. I'm very very much capable of
playing at this test level as well. So Patrick deuy
Pilotto gets the start this week I think and mentally
deserved as well as that the captain c to delete this
(04:10):
team around the park. He is a strong leader, as
I said before, so just a chance to make sure
that he's front and center for the All Blacks selecteds
this week. Also Wallace a t t at number eight
as well, his preferred position. First time he's going to
start there for the All Blacks at the back of
the scrum maybe points to some of the selections at
the unleash in that European portion of this tour. Maybe
(04:33):
TD moves to eight sov open soe flank. It could
be a possibility, and then you might be able to
move a two povis to blindside. We just talked about
Patrick dey Biloto there. You know, if you put toopervi
and on the blind side gives you another option at
line out time and those big tests. He's started at
blindside flanker before, been in an immenseally good form for
the All Blacks this season. That could point to where
(04:57):
perhaps the All Blacks go on the European part of
the tour.
Speaker 1 (05:01):
We're talking about the European part of the tour. How
much can we read into the team that will run
out against England next weekend?
Speaker 2 (05:08):
Well, I think you look at positions one through four
and go okay, well, these players are unlikely to start
next week because you've got Ethan Degree to come back in,
Cody Taylor, Interroll Lomax as well, Scott Barrett the captain
to come back in as well. You would think too
Bova I will come back into the starting lock. Although
as I just mentioned maybe he comes on the blind
side flankers. So there's four positions already that are going
(05:30):
to change. I think you look at Boat and Barrett
and go not in the twenty three this week, probably
likely to be part of the squad small group rather
that heads up north early for the England Test to
get a few rips under the belt. They leave Friday
Japan time, so you'd suspect he'll be part of that.
I suspect he'll now run the cutter at Twickenham and
(05:51):
start at first five in that match. A few other
players will come back in you would be Barrett, you'd
think back from injury there as well. So as much
which is selecting a squad for Japan this week, there
are a few signs that point to what they might
do against England next.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
And what about Japan? When are they being named?
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Ye se Eddie Jones and the Japanese team will be
named on a traditional Thursday, forty eight hours out from kickoffs.
The all blank's getting the jump on any this week.
Mixed form, I'd say for Japan so far this year.
Well beaten by Fiji in the Pacific Cup final earlier
in the season or a month or so back now
they were up and down in that tournament. Still don't
(06:31):
know where they're at. Eddie Jones looking to the future
a little bit with some of the younger players in there,
so hard to know what kind of Japan team will
turn up in Yokohama come Saturday afternoon local time.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Fantastic Elliott, thank you so much for joining us and
we'll look forward to your commentary mate.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Thanks b Kate, catch you soon.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
Yep you will indeed your commentary just before seven o'clock
here on Saturday night, right after the bab Plinty Steam
has beat Wellington in Buddings in PC Grand Final as well,
so it's quite an afternoon, noon and evening of rugby
