Speaker 1 (00:00):
International rugby coverage on the Country Sport Breakfast is proudly
brought to you by Access Solutions, elevating you and your
business to a higher level. Time to talk rugby now
on the Country Small Breakfast. The job's done for the
All Blacks in Yokohama in Japan after an early scare.
I've got to say the tourists ran out sixty four
to nineteen winter, scoring three second half tries in addition

(00:22):
to seven in the first. So now they move their
attention to England. Ten past four Sunday morning, live here
on Gold Sport and joining us on the CSB this morning.
A man on the ground in jolly old England, right
in the hard London. Elliott Smith Morning, Elliott.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Good, abk, good to catch up from London. Yes, it's
been a rainy, gray old day here in London, but
myself in the All Blacks of settled in town.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Just like nicely fantastic. Well, before we talk about the
English game coming up this weekend, let's go back to
last weekend. It wasn't the most convincing win by the ABS.
What did you make of it?

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Yeah, patches, they were destructive if they were brilliant and
they looked like they'd score with ball in hands every
time it was given to them. But in other parts
of the game it was clunky, it was era riddled,
and it was a little bit sloppy, so it's hard
to know exactly what to take out of it. I

(01:20):
thought Japan started really, really strongly, Eddie Jones said during
the week they wanted to start strongly. He got exactly
that from his team on Saturday afternoon. They came out
of the blocks with an absolute raw, put the All
Blacks on the back foot, played at pace. The conditions
were hot and they were humid, they were sticky, and
Japan looked comfortable playing in them for the first twenty minutes,

(01:42):
but the All Blacks got into the game. That try
that was just allowed to Warner Dunes was a real
turning point in the contest, and I don't think Japan
would have necessarily won. But the heads went down a
little bit after that for Japan, and the All Blacks
were able to strike in the blink of an eye.
They went from almost being nineteen fourteen down to being

(02:02):
forty three twelve up a halftime in no time at all.
So they played some pretty good rugby in the back
half of that first half and the second half I
thought it was clunky. They paid odds on for a
really big score and it probably got one in the end.
In terms of scoring, you ten tries in all in
sixty four points, but probably could have been even more.

(02:25):
And it felt like after half time Japan probably learned
that they are a bit more comfortable just holding onto
the ball rather than having to tackle against the All Blacks.
And when the All Blanks did get the ball it
was a little bit sloppy in the second half. As
I said, so I look past mark wins a win
and they got the job done rather comfortably in the end,
but it wasn't say a hallmark game to look back

(02:46):
on for sure.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
Do you think any anyone played their way into contention
for the England Test coming up this weekend?

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Look to be honest, I don't think anyone played the
house down. I mean we saw another great performance and
thought from I thought he was excellent once again. Can
Roy guards given the All Blacks more food for thought
as well around that halfback role. I suspect he might
come off the bench this week at Twickenham, maybe start
against Ireland and Dublin next weekend. But I think with

(03:16):
the All Blacks, you know, sending eleven front liners over
early as they did out of Japan on Friday pretty
much signals their team for this weekend. I don't think
Damian mckenzy did enough at Tend to have a conversation
or rethink of that conversation around that. I think Boden
Barrett will start this week at Twickenham in ten so
I think by and large that the area of contention

(03:39):
is probably going to be the wing between Mark Talia
and Severu Reese this weekend. Otherwise I think, really I
don't think anyone played themselves and or to be honest,
out of selection consideration for this weekend.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
On the other side of the park this weekend, the English,
they get that feeling that this All Black team is
there for the taking, don't they.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
They do absolutely And look, they pushed the All Blacks
big time back in July and haven't played since. They've
gone and played or had their off season and then
got back into a bit of Premiership rugby, and by
and large they've got a couple of injuries here or there,
as every squad does, but they've got a relatively first

(04:22):
choice team to pick from for this weekend, and I
think there is a sense that they do believe the
All Blacks are there for the taking. Whether that's reflected
in actuality and reality this week is another matter entirely,
because I think they felt that maybe back in July
as well, that they could strike while the All Blacks
are still getting used to their new systems, and they

(04:43):
got close on two occasions in Zuneeda and at Auckland,
who weren't able to quite put the Polish on there.
I spoke to Scott Robertson at the airport in Tokyo
on Sunday before the All Blacks left and you reflected
on that and he said it seemed quite some time
ago since they played, and it really has been. The
All Blacks you know, have been to South Africa since then,

(05:06):
had that loss to Argentina, the winds over Australia as well.
So there's been some ups and downs for the All Blacks,
no doubt since then. But Scott Robinson feels that the
game has been grown from their perspective as they prepare
to play this English team at Twickenham, who are coming
out of as I say, not tis Raby together since
that July series and.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Over the next four weekends, not just England. This coming weekend,
we then have Ireland, France, Italy. Have a look into
your crystal ball, Eliot. How many wins do we get?

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Oh? Look, I think you All Blacks will win this weekend.
And I might be proven wrong on that come when
we catch up next Monday morning or whenever that might be.
But I think the All Blacks will win at Twickenham.
I actually think they'll get the victory in Ireland as well,
and then they'll drop the match against France. I don't
know exactly why that has told me that, but I've
just got a sense that the woman needs to then
drop the game against France. And look, regardless, they need

(06:00):
to get at least you'd think two of three wins
on the board. These are tough tests, make no mistake
about it. Winning none from three is not acceptable. But
they need to get some wins on the board. Across
these three weeks. They will be tough. They're going to
be character building in many ways for this All Blacks team.
You think back to earlier on in the year Wallace

(06:21):
to Tz didn't play against England. Now is form player
you'd argue not only if the All Blacks loose forwards,
but of the All Blacks full stop, cam Roy guards
back in the mix if he plays this weekend or
in the subsequent two tests. So they've got a bit
more sense about their game, the All Blacks, and this
is the chance to put it to the test. And
you know, with the Big three weeks ahead plus Italy,

(06:42):
with all due respect to them as well, you know,
the All Blacks, I think we'll win three or four.
How about that?

Speaker 1 (06:49):
All right, we'll wait and see what happens, Elliott, enjoy
your time over there, and we'll look forward to your
call on Sunday morning, New Zealand. Time go well, cheers, BK.
Catch up soon and that game four o'clock on Sunday morning,
live here on Gold Sport and also on iHeartRadio. Elliott
Smith over there with greg Or Paul
