Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the cricket field to the cow shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport. What
can I do for you? It's time to talk fruit
and vegetables and new potatoes with David Stewart, the friendly
fruit er. I'm happy, you're happy Jersey. Good morning, right
the Jersey Bennie. You've got to sit down and eat

(00:21):
those are so lovely. The origin of that name, Jersey Bennie?
Do they come from Jersey? I guess, I don't know,
don't know. You should know the meaning to be honestly perfect,
honestly with you. I've never looked that up bright. I
will do that while you're doing your fruit and I
might just do a bit of a look up here
right polls me go on? And nectarines also the first

(00:43):
line of nectarines arriving in the markets this morning from
and Wiraw down in the Hawk's Bay down Nectarine so
summers here, Mate, strawberries on the way down in price
to blueberries around there. Raspberries the next one up in
the shops here. Tomatoes price is cheap five six dollars
a kilo. You know you can't grizzle and act tomatoes
this time is same price they were in two thousand

(01:03):
and seven, so you can't complain at all. Look at
that is how many years ago that I don't know whatever?
That is quarantine, that's that's incredible. God tell me all right,
you want to know about the Jersey biting potatoes, Well
it was ninety five years ago when Jersey beannies first
came to New Zealand. They were brought here by the
burnest people from Jersey. So there you go, right, But

(01:26):
it was an eighteen seventy eight that the potato first
arrived on the world stage, and it originated on Jersey Islands,
the largest of the Channel Islands. Quite by accident. You
look at something every day and guess what. The absolutely
beautiful I know they are the best of them. Where
are they grown in New Zealand? Main runs down Canterbury Way, Yes,

(01:46):
and the apple bee farm down there. And very nice
potatoes too. They look like they always opened the first
box or those are lovely spotato hotpital A little bit.
It's more expensive than so you pay how much for
a box six dollars we're doing for the one kilo
boats which is actually quite cheap. Should be a little
bit more, but they're going to be kind to people.

(02:06):
That's good. No, it's good, buy it and now lovely potatoes.
So night, it's the first time I'm having some good. Well,
I might have something for the weekend. All your salads
are good. Buying your tomatoes, I just sit it down.
In price. Cucumbers, cousettes two are cheaper the local product.
There are still assi beans coming in. Our beans are
starting the while people are ringing up on the telephone,
David Wins the corn starting. Give us a couple of weeks,

(02:27):
will you please, you're jumping a week. Excuse me? November. Yeah,
new season carrots and pocacoi and new season Nagria spuds
and island Hardy's coming out from up there. Fruit side mate.
You know, Apple supplies, Kiwi fruit supplies, peers local, all
that product is getting lower. Supplies they are running out. Actually,
prices are moving up year. So that's just because they're
season that's right, seasonal. You know it's now November. Well

(02:49):
on the weekend, it's November. So but the Nick Doreenes
are here to fill the gap and to be plumbers
and emmy peaches and cherries and all that. So that's good.
You can't complain. Yeah, and let's look at Ozzie Orange
as Ossie Man and the USA grapes a lot around
and poor pork pineappleed bananas. Reasonable supplies there too. No,
can't complain. Lots of good news, no complaining at all.
In fact, we're very happy that you've brought the Jersey

(03:11):
bening news to town. And I will know and the nectarenes.
I think thes are greatly adaholics Bay mainly we're are there. Yeah,
I said that before. You don't even listen because you're googling.
Weren't you potatoes? You're one of those. It's good to
learn something. It is every day we learn something new.
There we go. All right, so looking good on the
fruit and videos it is. Yes, people should be very happy. Oh,

(03:33):
we're all very happy. All right, have a great week
and we'll talk again next week. Thanks Brian. Eighteen away
from seven. You know, nice piece of nice piece of
steak with Jersey Bennie potatoes and asparagus that is odd
