Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on
Gold Sport.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
On the Country Sport Breakfast. Driving down State Highway one
last weekend, I noticed a big sign as I approached
Hunterville and it caught my attention. It said home of
the Shepherd's Chamozel coming up this Saturday, and I thought, wow,
I've got to find out a little bit more about that.
So we're going straight to the to the horse's mouth,
so to speak. One of the key organizer, the man
(00:27):
that's going to be on the microphone the whole time
for the Chamozel is Gary Massox, who joins us on
the show this morning.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Gary, Good morning, Good morning Brian.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Now the Shepherd's Chamozel. First off, please explain.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
So it's an idea that came up a few years
ago from some local Huntable farmers to have a bit
of a fun day in the Hunterville in celebrate our
shepherds and celebrate the hunter you know, the hunter Way
working Dog. And what sort of twenty six something years
ago was a bit of an idea by a few
people over at beer has turned into a massive one
(01:01):
day event in Hunterville.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
And so it's been going now for a few years.
How many people does it attract normally?
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Oh, look, it's hard to get it. I'd love to
know a crowd count, you know, three to five thousand
odd spectators. We have we have a junior race, intermediate
teens in a shepherd's race. The teens and juniors basically
sell out within a day, and the shepherds eventually sell out.
(01:30):
They always take a bit longer to get organized. So yeah,
we we have a bird crowd with lots of other
entertainment as well to keep to keep families entertained for
the day. And then we have a band and you know,
and are dancing into.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
The night and so basically entry wise, people just rock
up well with their dogs, so you have to have
a dog with it.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Yeah, so so the only the only race that has
a dog of the actual shepherds. The other the teen
and all those others they don't have to have a dog.
But yeah, the race, and it's all pre register obviously
with you know, with waivers and health and safety those
sort of. And then they then obviously the juniors have
a short track, and then of course it gets harder
(02:12):
and harder and tougher and tougher, and the shepherds the shepherds,
you know, run up the main street, run up a
significant hill or call it that climb up the hill,
run through mud, over a dam, mud slide, they go
under electric fence, run through a stock crate, run through
a sheep dip. We have a series of challenges and
(02:33):
there's always a bit of secrecy. The food table Brian
is a highlight. The food normally comes from the inside
bit of the animal that they have to eat. It
might be a bit of liver or something like that,
or the kids get some interesting vegetables. Last year was
Brussels sprouts, the year before was asparagus. This year is
(02:56):
another food group. So there was a bit of fun.
We feed them and they have a year and then
there's a series of challenges on the main street, you know,
rope swings, climbed through a car, through our dam. Yeah,
so it's a bit of fun.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
It's a hell of a way to put a wonderful
town like hand of along the map, really, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Yeah, anys to say an idea of you guys came
up with years ago was turned into a big event
and you know the council are bigging behind it and
big supporters and so's the local community and many hours
of organization for a big day. But it's certainly a highlight.
I'll always look forward to it. It's a fun day.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
And last year's winner of the of the Chamozl was
a surprise celebrity winner.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Yeah, in the in the woman's section. In the race,
Sarah Olmer came in first in the women's section and
like I was standing there on the microphone reading out
the winners as they come through. And a week Sarah
on I knew that name and yeah, from a little
bit of a change from taking a bike around the
velodromeic great case to doing our mud rut with a dog. Yeah,
(04:02):
so she was a winner. I'm not too sure if
she's coming back this year. Her kids are definitely entered,
I understand, so we'll see who back in Hunterville. So
it was a bit of excitement.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
And the shamozzle is part of what you call the
Hunterville Hunterway Festival, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Yeah, So the festival runs for the day and I
say it's to celebrate our hardworking shepherds in our industry
and the hunter Way dog that does all the hard
work for us. So that's what it's all about.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Fantastic. So when does it all get underway on Saturday?
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Yep, Saturday, Main Street ten thirty is the first thing
on our event list in terms of registrations, but then
we also have dog trials and we've got magic shows
and then we have a speech here in the evening
and then yeah been at night.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
So yeah, big day, Well fantastic, Well Gary, thanks for
joining us. You'll be on the microphone again. I think
it's a great idea. Well done mate, No worries, thanks Brian.
That's Gary Massix out of Hunterville. So if you just
happen to be Highway one on Saturday and you're wondering
what all the chamozolas, what all the goings on are
in Hunterville as you drive on through, or maybe you
(05:09):
stop off and grab a pie or something like that,
guess up the cart It is the Shamozel the Shepherds Shamozol.
I just love that name and I think actually it
may have featured either on a country calendar or a
news item a year or two back on TV. But anyway,
it's a great idea, The Hunt of All, the Hunter
of All hunter Away Festival. Great idea here on gold
