Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the rugby field to the rotary shed.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold
Sport eighteen past eight o'clock. Here, thank you for joining
us this morning. We're talking soccer football now on the
show where we're just a couple of sleeps away from
the first professional derby in New Zealand football history. Wellington
Phoenix hosting Auckland FC Saturday five o'clock kickoff at Wellington

(00:25):
sky Stadium. Joining us on the show this morning, the
next CEO, David Die Morning, David.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Morning, BK.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
I bet you're excited about this one made. I mean
you could have scripted couldn't have scripted it any better,
a local derby first versus second on the table.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Yeah, we're very excited. I mean I was always you know,
ear marked in our calendar as one of the big
games for the year and now with Auckland start being
very good and our start being very good, both unbeaten
third round in I mean you you're right, you couldn't
have scripted it better. And the crowds looking good and
the forecast is looking good, so it's going to be
a massive day out in Wellington.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
I wish it was like that last Saturday when I
was there to see Wellington beat Bad Penny Mate.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Yeah, no, I felt so sorry for Tony Giles and
the team. They're our neighbors on our floor. We worked
with them a lot, and you know it was just
guarded for them. I mean, they had a good crowd,
it was it was decent, but you know the fact
that it was just pouring of ranger didn't do it any.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Favors, did it absolutely? So look at the Phoenix's season.
First off, we've had a draw and a win, so
you'd be pretty happy with the way they've started the season. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Look, you know Phoenix, we're traditionally slow started. It takes
us a little bit of time to kick into especially
because we've get We normally finish our recruitment later and
so we have to build into the season as the
players become more adepted chief of style and how he
wants to play. But they started off with really well
the season there the one one drawer at home to
Western was a good start, and then going away to
Perth and it's good to get that Perth game out

(01:49):
of way. That's a long trip. So we've now got
that out of the way earlier in the season. Come
away to three points and a solid to you good
way to start the season.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Are you excited to have another New Zealand team in
the A League? Would you rather have sort of been.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
There on your ohun no, no, no, it's good to
have Auckland in the camp. They've you know, it brings
a lot of it. Like an example it is this
game this weekend. It brings a lot of attention to
the to the league and into football in general. It
helps us with the player development that you know, the
Phoenix has been doing a lot of heavy lifting for
the last ten to twenty years in terms of bringing
through young players, so they can take some of that

(02:22):
way in to off our shoulders as well. But no,
they're and they've been good. You know, they've taken a
lot of it and the Australians are loving it. So
that always helps as well. And you know, remember it
wasn't so long ago then the Australians wanted us out
of the competition and now they look at the look
at across the TAM's been going. The two of the
best teams are actually a New Zealand now and they're
leading the way in terms of you know, the attendance

(02:43):
and the viewership and and also the merchandise. I mean,
we had a fantastic season last year and you know,
twenty five percent of all the merchandise sold in the
Aleague was willing in Phoenix last year, so they're looking
at that's going. There's success stories actually over there now
not so much the big clubs side near Melbourne anymore.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
And talking about the merchandise, I mean I watched the
Auckland f C game on on the weekend and boy
there's a lot of jerseys out there with Oakland deft
Sea people or people wearing oaklandf Sea jerwsys as well.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, started with a hissing aroar and they've they've marketed
themselves well and they've put their name out there, so
you know, we have played with them. You need that
at the start of a new club. You need to
get your brand out there and you need to get
a bit of a buzz and they've done a good
job there.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
How many bums on seat you're expecting there for the weekend.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
David Well, ticket sales have really started to kicking to gear.
It's always been starting strongly. We've been on salth about
two months and it's started strongly from day one, but
now it's really kicking into gear. Now it's a couple
of days away, so we're thinking, you know, over eighteen thousand,
maybe twenty thousand people there on Saturday afternoon. Like I said,
the forecast is good, so it could kick on. We
do a lot of our sales on the day, so

(03:43):
we actually probably won't know until Saturday how many people
have got to turn up. It's goods When you compare
it to our modeling other games that we've done on
a similar side, it's about eighteen thousand.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Yeah, that's absolutely fantastic. You had a great season last
year for the Phoenix, so one of the goals for
the season this year go out and would it?

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Well, we was going to go one better than we
did last year. And going out in the in the
semi final was hot, you know it was. It was
gut wrenching, but it is what it is, right and
you're losing extra time, you know, what can you do
is and what you can do about I thought we
were the better team throughout the most of that game,
but you know, Melbourn Victory is big club, big resources,
and they just had a slightly better run at the
end of the game. But yeah, no, we want to

(04:22):
make a Grand final. We'd love a Grand Final in Wellington.
I think the fans deserve that, the city deserves it,
and hopefully that this year would go one better and
have the Grand Final here in Wellington.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Well David looking forward to that match on Saturday afternoon,
just after five kickoffs. So thank you for joining us.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Thanks Becky, appreciate the Fort.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
David Dome, Wellington nixt CEO, the first local derby course.
There'll be another return, one in Wellington later on, rather
in Auckland later on in the season.
