Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're talking international cricket now on the show, where the
black Caps are looking to make even more history. Starting
this afternoon, day one of the third cricket Tests between
the black Caps and India, five o'clock, first ball being
bowled out of Mumbai, going for a clean sweep. Wouldn't
that be wonderful? Joining us on the show this morning
out of the black Caps. Darryl Mitchell, Morning, Daryl, morning,

(00:21):
here you go very well. Thank you. First off, congratulations,
well done on that series win with one to go.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Thank you. Yeah, look it. Yeah, it's obviously pretty court
something we set out to do at the start of
the series. And yeah, to create history for the black
Caps and to come over here and do something that
no one's done before, it is pretty special.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
First key we team to in a series in India.
Lots of fans and pundits thought that the golden era
of black Caps cricket was over. How good is it
to prove them wrong? Mate? What was it feeling like
in the team?

Speaker 2 (00:52):
I look for us, it's not trying to prove people wrong.
It's just being really proud to represent our country and
come over here and take on the world's best and
their own conditions, and I thought, you know, the way
we've I guess stuck to the way we wanted to
play over here and tried to keep putting them under
pressure both with bat and balls. It's paid off and
hopefully we can do it again in this Test coming up.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
And it's not easy playing over there, is it on
the subcontinent with the pitches the way they are, and
the weather and the crowd. You got everything against you
in a way.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah, look, that's the challenge of Test cricket and taking
on teams in their own conditions. It's so foreign to
us as Kiwi's coming over here and playing in forty
degree heat with ninety percent humidity and wickets that turn.
But that's for me, that's the really exciting thing and
the challenge. It is so hard, but it's so rewarding
when it does come off, and that's why we all

(01:42):
love Test cricket and love testing ourselves against the best
in the world.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
And for you, three innings with the bat so far
this tour, scoring eighteen and each getting starts, but not
sort of going on, what are the challenges that you
personally are facing when you're out in the middle.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Yeah, look, that's the challenge where I bat in the
middle order. Over here in the subcontinents, you're coming out
against the turning ball. And for me, the cool thing
is I am getting starts. I'm facing sort of fifty
balls and each innings and helping build partnerships for the
team to get totals. And although I'd love to go
on and make big scores, that's the nature of Test

(02:18):
cricket and batting in this part of the world in
the middle order. So look, I just got to keep
being as ruthless as I can and keep trying to
build on those scores, but at the same time trying
to do a job for the team.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Do you prefer the pictures in the subcontinent or do
you prefer the green tops that we have here at home.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Look, I don't mind. I think it's called to test
yourself and have to adapt your game two different surfaces.
That's what international cricket's about. Obviously we've grown up on green, fast,
bouncy ones and I love Hagley Oval at home, but
it's also really cool to test yourself against the likes
of Judasia and Ashvin on turning wickets. You can't bat

(02:56):
the same. You've got to tinker with things and try
and adapt as you go. That's the cool thing about it.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Such a passionate fan base in India, the Indian fans,
aren't they Have you started decop it a bit about
the results going your way rather than their way.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
Look, cricket over here is amazing how much they love
the game. And I've spent almost six months probably here
in the last twelve and the last year over here
in India, So look at you get used to. I
guess the craze and the fans that comes with playing
cricket in this country. But I think the Indian fans
have a lot of respect for us as kiwis as well.
A lot of people say that we're sort of their

(03:32):
second team around the world, and we definitely do feel
that from the Indian fans. So we're very lucky.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
So you're playing this one in Mumbai, and I believe
that the pitch there is of a different clay than
the one you played on as well. So have you
had a chance to look at the pitch? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Look at Mumbai's a red soil, which traditionally means a
bit more bounce and can turn a bit faster than
say the black soil of Puna which we played on
last week, so usually the pots can be important and
hopefully Tommy can get the right way and we can
put a score in the first innings and I'm sure
it will turn as the Test match goes on and.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
The Indian team they'll be hurting a little bit now,
so they'll be stung. They'll be like wounded bulls charging
at you, won't.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
They look there. They've got a number of world class
players who have done it for a long time and
that's the cool thing of taking them on in their
own conditions is Yeah, it's good fun. Obviously the luxe
of a rat and then the spin contingent as well
as Bomba with the same so they've got all bases
covered and it's a great challenge for us as a group.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
And weatherwise for the Test. Need to be another hot
and humid one on the cards across the course of
the Test.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
Yeah, it should be pretty warm. I'll definitely be sweating,
don't worry about that.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
The hero of the second Test was spinner Mitch Satner
and pace man Matt Henry did well as well. Who
they demolished the Indian batting lineup in the first couple
of tests, so they're having to undergo fitness test. Any
update on them.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
I'm not sure yet. I saw a much at breakfast,
but he didn't mention anything, so so yeah, I guess
we'll find out closer to the game. But yeah, just
really proud of him that last test, the way he,
I guess was under a bit of pump it through
the media, and for him to come out and do
what he's done. We know he's a world class player
within our group and he bowls some seriously hard overs

(05:17):
for us. So yeah, just really proud to see him
do what he's done and I'm sure continue to do
it well.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Daryl, thanks for joining us and go well across the
course of the test. Match mate, thanks so much

Speaker 2 (05:27):
Now cheers, Thank you,
