Speaker 2 (00:55):
Morning, What an exciting weekend of football A local derby?
Are twenty six thousand fans filing into the stadium? Fantastic scenes.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Yeah. I was going to say the attendance first off,
I mean we were talking sort of eighteen to twenty thousand,
but twenty six thousand people, which is a regular season
record for the Phoenix. Ome fixture, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yeah, it is, barring final series, that's the biggest crowd
they're likely to pull. It's a huge crowd. Fantastic for
football particularly, but sport in general, and fantastic for the city.
It was an arm wrestle. It got thrown away late
on and I think gian Carlo Italiano summed up by
giving away the three points and it was a bit

(01:35):
of a gift. But I think all the talking was
about the fans because what a fantastic scene. It was
yellow and black, black and blue at either end of
the stadium. It was good fun.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Been a long time coming a local derby, first one
in our history. What a feeling.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Yeah, look for the football community. Unprecedented. You wouldn't have
thought ten years ago that you'd see scenes like we
saw with traveling fans coming across from Auckland. Coming down
from Auckland. We're used to seeing sort of a knot
of fans at the stadium. A few Australians turn up
for their matches. But this will become a regular feature

(02:13):
of two more of these this season, so it'll be
back to walk I think December seven around about then.
That's the next one. So let's see if the fans
turn up again. Auckland City are on fire by the way,
leading the table and loving life in the A League.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Well let's go back to the next and they had
a historic season last season. They came oh so close
to their first ever Grand Final. For the first three
games of this season, do you think they've taken a
step forward or backwards to start their twenty four to
twenty five season.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
Undoubtedly they've gone backwards. They had the heart ripped out
of their side in terms of players leaving for bigger
opportunities offshore. Devada their goalscorer of back to Europe, Kray
back to Australia, being old into France. It's Finn Sermon
off to the States and Alex Pulton obviously off to Auckland.

(03:05):
So that's almost the heart of their side and very
influential players. They haven't been able to reproduce them as yet.
So undoubtedly this is a step back for the next
but as their step back, Auckland have stepped forward and
you've got a New Zealand side on top of the
A League.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
It's a rebuilding season, so you know, and it's early days.
There's a lot of football to come though, isn't there
for the next Oh yeah, look.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Last season they weren't fancied by anybody and Giancali or
Italiana Cheapie as he's called, pulled them together and put
them on a fantastic run. That's what they'll be hoping again.
And there's plenty of football and the way this a
league is structed, it's about making that playoff series later
in the year and playing your best football come end
of season. So you don't win the league in the

(03:49):
first three weeks. But it's a great start for Auckland
and for Wellington. It's an acceptable start given that they
are a new side in the rebuilding phase.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
It's a pretty impressive start when you think about you know,
Auckland f c their very first ever season in the league.
Three wins from three starts leading the table. Is this
the team you know made? Is this team made to
win the championship? Do you think?

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Well, there's certainly got plenty of ambition. There's no shortage
of resources being thrown into them. They haven't conceded a
goal in three games and that's been the hallmark of them.
Very hard to score against, and they always say that
it's defenses that win leagues and its strikers that win games,
if you get the difference between those two things. So look,
as a league winning, potentially potential side, they've started the

(04:35):
right way and they've certainly got a roster that looks
good enough. Defensively, I think they look really really solid.
Can they score enough goals going forward? Well, that remains
to be seen.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
And of course there's Aussie teams we keep we kind
of forget about the Aussie situation now on those teams
over there. Sydney looking really really strong.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yes, side are always going to be there or their
abouts victory look quite they're going to be there or
the air abouts. But it's so early in the season.
Central Coast have been traditionally very strong, so there's lots
of opposition. But I think your success for the A
League franchise and Auckland would be to make the finals
first year they do that, they'll be very very.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Happy, absolutely, Tody, thank you for joining us today. A
great way to start the first year of a local derby.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Fantastic, Yeah, fantastic December seven. Put a ring around it
head to walk them for a bit of football.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
Yeah, that'll be great and there'll be twenty six plus
thousand people there. I am sure. David Choke, our football expert,
