Speaker 2 (00:08):
Cricket Now and the black Caps have whitewashed India at
home after winning by twenty five runs in the third
and final Test of Mumbai. The visitors were bowled out
early in the day for one hundred and seventy four,
but are stunning six wickets before lunch help New Zealand
on their way to victory. New Zealand are now up
to fourth in the World Test Championship standings, with India
(00:30):
slipping to second, joining us on the CSB This Morning
host on the Front Foot, the voice of New Zealand Cricket,
Ryan wordeld want did you just see that one coming?
Speaker 1 (00:39):
No, it's although it's been more and more likely after
the winning of the first Test, the predictability factor had increased.
But having been able to win three tosses and decide
their own particular fate, they've outplayed India in Indian conditions
and that is the most remarkable feature that they have
(01:00):
outplayed this very good Indian side. You still can't take
much away from them, but they've got issues India.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
You've be what do you think the issues are with India, because,
as you said, you know, they've got Coli and then
they've got some very good cricketers. What are their issues.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Well, it's hard to read because they've got such well
performed players. You just look at the stats of the
individuals at the top order with the bat and that's
where they've struggled to get runs. They've got players who
are averaging forty five plus. They've got veryat Coli, one
of the most prolific run stores. Yet he hardly got
(01:36):
to meet, you know, on anything that New Zealand were
able to do. He was almost anonymous with the bat
and that's been their problem because they were able to
bowl reasonably well on many occasions. Although that first Test
match when he's even bold for forty six, they were
always going to be struggling to come back from that.
But you know, they were outplayed in their own canditions.
(02:00):
Perhaps they've got to rethink how they prepare their pitchers,
not to doctor them to their own spinners, because their
spinners were in the past Jadasia at Ashbyn, well, they've
been supplanted by others. Now Washington Sundar is coming to
the reckoning. Perhaps Ashvin is past his best. Hard to say,
but you know they weren't able to perform as they
(02:22):
do in their home conditions. No one goes to India
and wins three Tests out of three. Well they do.
Now New Zealand has just done it.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
And you've been there. You know what it's like. You've
been following the great game for a long long time.
You know what the conditions are like in India. Is
this the greatest moment in Black CAP's cricket history.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Oh, would have to be. I think when you think
about the whole history of New Zealand against India, they
went thirty six years since the last Test they won
and then nineteen years before the two Test matches, never
won a series, never got close to winning a series.
They've played some pretty good games. I remember the time
when Chris Martin took five wickets and India you were
(03:05):
fifteen for five in the second innings of a game
in Amadabad. But they still weren't able to get up
within that game. And I think they would have left
here with the hope that they could perform and match India.
You know, it's hard to say because you don't know
how they're thinking, but their belief in their own ability
and their ability to win those conditions was obviously paramount
(03:25):
to them, particularly after the disappointing way they performed in
Sri Lanka. So going to that part of the world
is a tough assignment and they've nailed it.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
And looking at some of the individuals Wald's, how impressed
were you with, say, will Young coming in for an
injured Caine Williamson and coming away with the Player of
the Series award.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Well, he's had to wait in the wings all the
time when Williamson's not been available, Young has been there
to do the job and he's starting to show the consistency,
the skill, the ability to stay at increase that was
evident when he was a twenty one year old. He's
now thirty one years. He's been around the scene a
(04:06):
long time. He's chased cricket around the world, particularly to
England county sides, and his performance was quite outstanding. Not
big scores, but the consistency factor was more important than
the big scores, it seems.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Do you think we'll see Young in the playing eleven
come the England series at the end of this month?
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Hard to leave him out, But it's also hard to
leave Cape Williams it out. You know, you don't leave
Cape Williamson out of a side. So that's a problem
and the sort of problem I know selectors don't necessarily enjoy,
but it's nice to have, you know, twelve thirteen, fourteen
players basically striving four positions. I mean, they've got other
(04:46):
issues they're going to have to deal with in terms of,
you know, where does SOUTHI fit in the proceedings? Do
we play two spinners? Will Phillips be there as an
extra player to Tabola's Ospord did an outstanding job and
backing up for a jazz Pattel, all those things issues
that the selection panel are going to have to face
(05:07):
and come up with the side that can beat England
because they're still going to keep winning if we want
to get into the World Test Championship Final.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
So that's it for the black Caps. Now in India,
they pick up and come home ready for the TA
series against in England.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Yes, they're coming home to play domestic first class cricket,
which is unusual normally when they come home in tour situation.
We're playing short form cricket where we've played some ODI
form or fifty over cricket. Now there's going to be
a few rounds of domestic first class because the plunket
chield and that will give those players a chance just
(05:41):
to acclimatize and get into the shape of the first
class game. England to have issues themselves in terms of
they came off their performance in Pakistan losing that series
two to one, which was not a surprise so much,
but Pakistan produced spinners that do the business. So you know,
(06:02):
it's a busy period of time now leading up to Christmas.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Do you think we've sort of rattled the English a
little bit? They would have seen that result by the
black Caps that first Test twenty eighth of this month.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Oh they'll be rattled all right. And you know Brendan
McCullum will bring a side out here that is prepared
to take New Zealand on. Remember last time that close
finish at the basein Reserve when New Zealand won that
game and put a lot of pressure on the England side.
They'll be ready to do the same and England won't
have it their own way.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
It's a nice thing to say though. The black Caps
were a series, a clean sweep series went over India. Fantastic,
isn't it.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Yeah, it is indeed, and along that.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Last absolutely ones right, We'll let you go and we've
got a bit more work to do today, but a
great result. Brian Waddle joining us this morning. Of course,
he hosts The Front Foot with Jeremy Coney.
