Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on gold.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Sport thirteen away from eight o'clock. We came across a
story about Joel McManus, who is the Wellington editor at
the spin off, and he's decided his mission is to
get from Stuart Island to Cape Rianger as fast as
possible using only public transport. All started a day or
so ago on Stuart Island. He joins us this morning, Joel,

(00:27):
good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
B K.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
How are you good mate? Good mate? Where are you
and how are you at the moment?

Speaker 1 (00:34):
I'm excited for the journey. I am currently walking through
in the cargo on the way to my bus stop
so I can get through to the need in this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Right, you started at Stuart Island, so how did you
public transport? Obviously around Stuart Island. Is there that you
can sort of get to the ferry there?

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Yeah, So I had one of the shortest trips to
Stuart Island you'll ever have. I got it at seventy
night and had to leave at eight am the next day.
So the only thing I did there was walk to
the end of the road because I wanted to find
literally where New Zealand's transport network ends. And then I

(01:13):
turned around and came back, got on the Fiery first
thing in the morning, took a shuttle bus from Bluff
to in Chicago. And then by the time I'd arrived
and in Icago, I'd missed the bus to Dunedin. So
I had to spend all yesterday here.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Oh, there are worse places I supposed to spend a
day in, and then Icago has plenty.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
To do, isn't there.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
It's been delightful. I saw the sites, saw the water tower,
saw Saint Mary's Basilica had a fat Bastard pie that
was incredible, best pie I've ever eaten. Really, Yeah, I
could not recommend it enough. And yeah, and one of
my readers just commented on my story asked if I
wanted to play social football? So I got a game in.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
How about that? So what tis your bus leave for Dunedin.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
We've got eight twenty five bus today, so we'll get
about noon and.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
From Duneed and what's next there?

Speaker 1 (02:04):
So I could have pushed through to christ Church all
in one day. But the train from christ Chach doesn't
actually leave till Thursday because it only goes twice a week.
So I'm gonna manage. I'm going to get a bit
of time into Needin to hang out and see the
sites there as well.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
That train trip from Christier is depict in is a
magnificent train trip. You'll love that one, mate.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
I'm really excited for it. I mean, one of the
reasons I wanted to do this was because I'd never
taken into regional rail in New Zealand, and I think
that's a pretty normal thing, right, Not many Keywis do.
It's kind of only exists for wealthy tourists these days
because the system has just been so underfunded, right, So
part of the reason I wanted to do it was
just to highlight that a little bit and show the

(02:46):
state of public transport infrastructure in this country.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
So obviously the ferry across to Wellington, then it's what
another train Wellington to Auckland.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
The Wellington to Walkland train and Northern Explorer. Then I
grab another intercity bus to pie here and then to
get to Cape Rianger, I actually had to book an
eleven hour daytour of Northland which Enter City runs, so
that's actually a loop from the Bay of Violands to
Cape Ranger and back.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Oh fantastic. So I have to ask the question, Joel,
why are.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
You doing this?

Speaker 1 (03:19):
I honestly, that's a great question, and I'm not sure
I have an answer. I thought it would be funny, No,
I mean I to try and give a serious answer. Yeah,
I mean, part of it was I wanted to explore
the state of this country's public transport. You know, when
you go to Europe and you want to, you know,

(03:40):
visit various cities, see the site, you get the train,
that's the most obvious thing to do, and yet that's
barely possible in our own country.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
Yeah, when they only.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Run a couple of times a week, it is a
bit confusing, isn't it exactly?

Speaker 1 (03:53):
And you know that very expensive, very slow. So I
wanted to check that out and basically see whether it's
a viable former transport. And then, you know, I just
wanted to see the country. I hope I learned something
about New Zealand. I am. I've learned a lot about
in Icago. I was actually was so when I realized
I had to stay here for the day after my
trip had been delayed. And you know what, I came

(04:15):
to love the place. I have all the love in
the world for in Chicago.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
It's got a magnificent motorcycle museum there, and it's got
a great track museum. It's a wonderful place. So people
can follow you, can't they. You're writing about it each
and every day.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yep, on the spin off dot Colder and Zen. Every day.
I'm live blogging, so I'm posting every hour, every half hour,
anytime I see you or do anything interesting. I'm keeping
people updated with the troph every step of the way.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
Cost wise, what's it costing you?

Speaker 1 (04:45):
One thousand and thirty two dollars and that's just for
the tickets, not counting accommodation.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Okay, and then obviously when it's all over, how many
days you're giving yourself?

Speaker 1 (04:56):
So if everything goes to plan, which it has already not,
I will finish on Sunday. So one hundred and fifty
hours was the number that I circled and I was
hoping to hit because that's how long it takes to
take the entire Trans Siberian Railway, which is something like

(05:18):
five and a half times longer than New Zealand.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Wow, from Moscow to Vladivostok.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
Yeah, that's the one.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Yeah, amazing stuff, right, We wish you the best of
lucky you've got a bus to catch, enjoy your trip
to Dunedin. There some cool things to do in Dunedin
as well.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Wonderful Thanks so much, Brian.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
Good On, Joel.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
We'll keep up today and just keep an eye on
how things are going. Wellington editor at the spin off.
Traveling the length of the country via public transport and
fifty two dollars for that trip.

Speaker 3 (05:47):
It's not bad at it.
