Speaker 1 (00:09):
We're talking international rugby now on the show. For twenty
eight matches over one hundred and eleven years. It was
a one sided rivalry as you could get, with the
All Blacks winning twenty seven. There was one draw, however,
one famous afternoon in Chicago we'll all remember in November
twenty sixteen got Island on the board and things have
developed from there. From zero wins in twenty eight matches
(00:31):
Ireland to No. One five of nine, including that famous
series win in New Zealand last year, and the rivalry
will get its new chapter this Saturday morning, New Zealand time.
We'll have a commentary live here on Goldsport just after
nine from Aviva Stadium in Dublin's Fair City. Joining us
on the show this morning out of Urtie Radio and Island.
(00:51):
Michael Cochra Morning, Michael.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Hey, you brain horror things very very.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
Well, thank you and so looking forward to this almost
revene can we.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Well you certainly we're looking forward to the game. I'm
not sure what the world of revenge to be perfectly
fair about it. Look, we are seriously looking forward to
the game. You know. The the Aviva said he has
sold out fifty two thousand tickets sold for the match.
My phone has been happening with text messages and what
that message and people ringing me for the last week
(01:25):
or so wondering is any possible to getting tickets so
much so, I mean the interest, the interest not just
in this game, but I mean last weekend, over the
weekend on Saturday, I was in Limerick and Tooment Park
for the New Zealand fifteen match against Munster. Now it's
not a full Monster team either by the way, you know.
And there were twenty seven thousand people at that game
(01:47):
that was sold out yet to put in additional seating.
So yeah, the rivalry, the rivalry is there between Ireland
and New Zealand. The magic of the New Zealand Jersey.
It doesn't matter whether you're the old Blacks year the
Maori are here in New Zealand fifteen, just that the
pure marketing and magic of of that New Zealand chart
(02:09):
is something that the Irish have have bought into over
many many generations. Be included and it's just pretty awesome. Yeah,
I'm really looking forward to the weekend.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
I have to say I talked about the range. I
mean it was basically, have Ireland got over us knocking
you out of the World cap last year?
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Basically, Ah, listen, yes, we have made in fairness. Yeah,
I mean that's that's where when you I mean, I
mean in your introduction, when you talk about you know
how many years are in went and played in New Zealand,
and we were rolled over and steamrolled on quite a
few occasions. And as I've said to you and to
other people before, I mean, look, I've been I've been
(02:46):
traveling to New Zealand since two thousands with very optimistic
Ariash teams in the past, and we've got stuffed on
many many occasions. I remember Dan Carter dropping a goal
in christ Church to get a sort of abby, narrow
victory for New Zield against Ireland, and and then the
following week people thinking Arden had a chance and you
put sixty upon us in Hamilton sixty zero. So you know,
(03:10):
we're kind of we're used to those things. We're used
to We're used to defeat, and we're used to coping
with defeat and that's that that makes the victories and
we've had we're lucky, we've been fortunate enough we've had
a few of them in the last number of years.
That makes them even more sweeter if you understand what
I mean.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Yeah, absolutely, here's the Irish side change much from last
time we met last year.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Not well, I would say probably not really, but then
you kind of Johnny Sexton's name, our image kind of
crops up into my head straight off and obviously retired
after the the Rugby World Cup, so I mean he's gone.
So he's he's a big change there, probably wearing Jersey
ten this weekend will be another manical monster, Jack Crowley,
(03:54):
who's who's a young buck just in his early twenties,
coming through highly lot of has has done really well
at on the twenty level and senior level. He's got
a six Nations campaign under his belt as well, so
I mean he's he's there instead of Johnny Sexton. But
outside of that, really there isn't a whole degree of
(04:15):
a whole degree of many many changes, to be fair,
but we don't know that huge playing population, so we've
got to make the best of what we have. If
if you, if you if you get my drift so
sext and missing. But I think, you know, we we've
learned obviously from from that defeat by New Zealand in
the in the quarter front of the Rugbie World Cup,
and and Ireland have been more clinical and probably more
(04:36):
effective and probably would feel that if they did play
well against New Zealand that it may have happened. But
then like there's no point looking back. That's the reality about.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
You had a strong six Nations winning it all over again.
So what seems to be going so well in Irish
rugby probably over the last over the last decade.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Yeah, it's probably consistency and we've like at the at
the international level, with consistency of selection, you know, in terms,
that's what you said to me, Are there are many
many changes? I said, no, there aren't. There may be
one or two in in a couple of different positions
or whatever. You know, thought about a few people this
weekend and then there are some who were who were
out with long term injury basically, so it's consistency of selection.
(05:18):
You know. The majority of the Irish team now is
based around Leinster, who Lens Leinster have been one of
the most consistent teams in Europe without actually winning anything
over the last number of seasons. They've got the Champions
Cup finals, which is you know, the equipment of kind
of super rugby for for for for that, and they've
they've lost out to the eventual winners Larachelle and to
(05:39):
lose over the course of the last number of years.
But they they will backbone the Irish team really this weekend.
So it's just it's you know, judgment was there for
for a good while. Andy Farrel took over and has
kind of brought it on, brought it on to the
next level again if you understand the drift. So you know,
from from that point of view, it'll be it'll be
(06:00):
interesting to see how how it turns out. On tonight you.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Would have caught the old Black twenty four twenty two
narrow victory over the English. What did you make of
that performance?
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Yeah, it was it was It was a strange enough game,
was that? I mean, I guess, uh, I guess, you know,
I guess it's one of those things really where you
kind of wonder, you know, New Zealand were kind of
left to get off the hook really, to be fair,
I just thought the the end game from England was
pretty poor. You know, you're playing fifteen against thirteen, you've
(06:33):
got a five minute scrumb out. You kind of go, well,
you kind of favor England to to take the drop
goal earlier. I have a lot of sampathy for George Ford.
I thought it was a horrific pass from from from
Harry Randell, the replacement scrum half, so he was off
balance as he tried to gather the ball. And I
(06:53):
thought New Zealand were good.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
But you know, you know the fact that the that
the last.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
That they looked as if they were going to lose
the game but then ended up winning it, that's almost
like a blessing in disguise. So it feels as if
they've got a sort of a game with dirty fuel
out of their system. And I think that that will
make them. That will make them, you know, given the
fact that if Corey Taylor and Boden Bars are out,
which they say they are, if both of them are missing,
it just it galvanizes them more. I think ahead of
(07:21):
the game against Hardened in the.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
First year for the All Blacks under the new coach
Racers Scottie Robinson, what have you made of him?
Speaker 2 (07:29):
I think he's not standing individual. I mean I followed
his career, I mean a full career was when he
was playing and certainly when he was coaching the Cruise
Headers for a long period of time. I mean, he's
a he's a terrific coaches. Record at that level with
the Cruse Headers is unbelievable, you know, And it's like
anything else, it just it just takes a little bit
(07:49):
of time to to get everything. Everybody singing off the
same hymn sheet. It's taking him maybe a little bit
of time. People say they all blacks and transition, but
I I have yet to see what that actually means
in in in practice, I assume my my own mind.
Jason Holland uh is involved as well as the the
attack coach. So I'm meeting him for for a drink
(08:11):
during the week so I'll be hoping to try and
get some of to pick his brain to give me
some of the the game plan for for the weekend.
But on a serious note, Razor Robertson is a is
a terrific coach and I think he'll he'll certainly bring
the best out in in the players who are involved
with him.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
It's interesting, it's a Friday night game in in Dublin.
Why why Friday night?
Speaker 2 (08:33):
My understanding is something to do with television. My minor
sunding is that it's it's I call the games of
the radio. So I don't, I'm I'm I'm kind of
taking a helicopter view on this minudstunding is that all
of the games that are on this part of the
world over the course of the weekend are being spread
across the weekend, so there's no overlapping. So there's no
(08:56):
one game kicking off of three another game at four,
so there's no overlapping in terms.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Of kickoffs, mind and everything like that. So that's where that's.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Where this game kind of fits in on the Friday night.
So what are we eleven hour time listening to whatever
it is at this stage?
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Saturday morning here?
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Yeah, so Saturday morning York time, I'm sure. I mean, look,
there's a made of mind.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
As a has a very fine establishment first parlors, I
call it in Donald Wuddington, and he's selling breakfast early
on Saturday morning, so he's expecting a pretty big cabin
for the early breakfast and a few early points ahead
of a head of kickoff.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Absolutely gays in your crystal ball. Michael, how do you
see the game going, Who's going to win and why?
Speaker 2 (09:35):
I would be concerned from an Irish point of view
that I haven't had a game together since the since
they played South Africa in July, and that would that
would concern me. To be fair, it's probably negated slightly
by the fact that the majority of the team will
be based around what Leinster do. And I mean they've
been playing consistently throughout the court of the course of
(09:56):
this season. It's the third game, isn't it on tour
for New Zealand. You know Japan England, and we certainly
know that that New Zealand really do get up when
they play Ireland if you want a summer to me,
I'm not saying because I'm talking to you, but I
do genuinely have a belief we bring we bring the
best old on each other when we play each other.
(10:18):
And I mean that in the most respectful way. But
I just have a I would love to say I
think Arland will win, but I just do have a
sneaky feeling that New Zealand may get up on this one.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
Well, Michael, thank you for your time. Go well. Enjoy
the game, have a good call and we'll talk again soon.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Yeah. Cheers, Matt.
Speaker 1 (10:35):
