Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on
Gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Let's talk wine now with Michael Cooper, who's got some
suggestions for Christmas gift idea. And I think giving wine
for Christmas is a wonderful idea, Michael, do you know
there's only forty eight days to go until Christmas Day?

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Wow? Forty eight days? So okay, then we can start
looking forward to our special wines that people are going
to give wine lovers like you.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Well, I think it's that. I think it's a great
Christmas gift idea. And I believe that Villa Maria have
got some icon wines that make great Christmas gifts.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Well, that's right, And of course, when do you think
about how many wines a company like Villa Maria makes
under all of their hosts of different levels, but right
at the they've got a range they call icon although
interestingly the word icon actually doesn't appear on the labels,
but you can certainly tell their iconic looking at the
packaging and looking at the price. So these are sort

(01:12):
of special occasion wines and they're ideal, you know, as
a gift for a wine lover. There's a chardonnay, a
sauvignon blanc, a Cabinet sauvignon, and a pino noir. So
I guess what one might do is think, Okay, So
for the wine lover who you're thinking about for a gift,
maybe you know, do they like whites or reds? And

(01:34):
if they like, for example, reds, do they like cabinet
or pino noir. But all of these wines are very impressive,
but then they should be given their high prices.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
All right, so's let's take a quick look at the
four of them.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Right, So we've got Ville Maria Caltern, Hawkes Bay Chardona
twenty twenty two. Now this is ninety dollars, but it's
quite an arresting wine. It's got everything that you'd look
for in a sharp, a full bodied, rich savory. It's
it's highly complex, you know, deep stone fruit flavors, nutty

(02:08):
oak seasoning. It's already highly approachable. In fact, that's one
thing I noticed with all four of these ones. Although
they're going to be age worthy, all four of them
are already, you know, really good to drink. And i'd
say that about the sauvignyon blanc, which is called Villa
Maria woven mulvous Sauvignon blanc. Now this is not one

(02:31):
of those sort of grassy, capsicum flavored sauvignons at all.
It's been fermented and aged in French oak barrels. It's
sort of varying more in the direction of a chardonnay
in terms of its it's handling and its full bodied
character and its richness. But it has the tropical fruit
flavors that you get from very right sauvignon blong grapes.

(02:54):
So as an example of that sort of different style
of mulvasauvignon bloc handled and oak barrels, the Villa Maria
Woven twenty twenty three is a top example.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
What would you pay for that, Michael?

Speaker 3 (03:08):
That's sixty dollars, Okay, yeah, Now, if you're feeling rich,
let's go up to one hundred and fifty dollars for
the cabinet sauvignon based red, which is called Villa Maria
Gimdert gravels nar currycurry. Now nark currycurry means the gravel,
and so that's a reference to the stony soils that
define the Gimbert gravels where the vines were grown. Now,

(03:30):
this is Villa Maria's pinnacle, Bordeaux style red from vines
that were planted late last century. It's a bend of
cabinet and merlow. It's spent a year and a half
in French oak brey. It's about a half new. It's
really very impressive. It's dark, it's still quite purple flushed
in color. It's powerful, approachable, fragrant. It's got deep black currant,

(03:56):
RedBerry and spice flavors, even a hint of dark chocolate,
good tannin backbones. It's full of potential. I mean, it's
the sort of wine that you can enjoy now, but
ideally you'd clerate for anywhere, say from seven to twenty years.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
Oh wow, really that long wow.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
And then finally the one that I was particularly bowled
over by is Villa Maria Attorney Marlborough Peno Noir twenty
twenty one.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Right, that's going to be my Christmas present, because I
love my pen noirs.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
You was at a hint you were giving me then
why I.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Just care on Michael, It's.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
Okay. So that's that sells for one hundred and twenty dollars.
But actually it delivers good value in that it's a
terrific wine. It's very sulky textured. It was hand picks
and vines planted twenty two years ago and it's been
matured for fifteen months in French oak casts. It really

(04:55):
is a gorgeous wine, deep ruby, it's fragrant, mouth filling
and a jetic. It's got rich cherry plum, spice and
nut flavors. It's layered, it's very finely textured, and it's
even certified organic. So so that to me, if you
said to me which of those four wines would I
like for Christmas, I'd go for that Villa Maria Attorney,

(05:18):
malb twenty twenty one.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Well you've already got it. So what would you buy
a wine lover for Christmas?

Speaker 3 (05:24):
Well, these are actually ideal because they truly are you know,
the pinnacle of the range, and they do come in
very smart, classy gift boxes.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Fantastic. I think there's some great suggestions there. As I said,
forty eight days to Christmas Day, Hey Michael, always good
to chat, and we'll do it again next week. Great, right,
I've just written a note s all right, coming up
a quarter to two quarter to seven here on the
