Speaker 2 (00:09):
Well.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
The All Black team has been named to face Ireland
on Saturday morning, New Zealand Time, and still no room
for Lucaid prop Ethan de Groot Tomahee Williams preferred. The
run on side features a couple of changes. Saphoe More
and Damien Mackenzie are at hooker and first five respectively.
Joining us on the show this morning. A man on
the ground fresh out of the All Black press conference

(00:31):
in Dublin, Elliot Smith.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Morning, Elliott, Good morning, Bekay. So you've just.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Come from the press conference with coach Scott Robertson. Was
there much said about why Ethan de Groot's still not
in the side?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yeah? I asked Scott Robertson why he wasn't in the
side and basically said it was a performance decision around
the fact that they think to Mighty Williams across the
course of the year and the way he played last
week was deserving of the spot over Ethan degree certainly
for selection, but they've decided to go with to Mighty
Williams for another week in that starting role, though pretty

(01:06):
happy with the way he played at Twickenham, they copped
a couple of penalties at scrum time. Watching live in
our commentary, it felt like at least one of those
was relatively harsh. So I wonder if part of their
analysis has also told them that and gone, well, if
the referee had brought it the correct way, then he
would have had one go his way. So I certainly

(01:27):
think that's part of the decision, but certainly a performance
decision from the All Blacks to decide to retain to
Mighty Williams at Lucian prop Ethan de Grout out of
the twenty three. Look, I wouldn't be surprised if he
plays again next week in Paris and they change it
around and bring him back in there. But certainly a
wee bit of a message that there is a little
bit of work to do to get a spot back

(01:48):
in the team.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
Any word on why I mean that that behavioral breach
remains a bit of a mystery. Is anything more being
said about that?

Speaker 2 (01:56):
No, nothing further, and look, I'm my understanding is that
it's been cleared and they're all happy for him to
be available full selection again, but just hasn't done enough
in terms of proving to the coaches that he's worthy
of a spot. I guess over the course of the year,
if you look back, maybe the All Black scrum hasn't
quite got the ascendancy they would have liked in some

(02:17):
of those test matches. And mighty Williams. We know what
a player he is and his ability with ball around
the park. I kind of wondered whether his non section
last week was obviously the breach of team standards, but
this week might just be about sending a message and going, hey,
it's not going to be that easy for you to

(02:37):
get your spot back in this team just because you're
available again. So that wasn't necessarily what Scott Robertson said,
but it wouldn't surprise me. Maybe I have a little
bit of a message is just being sent by the
non selection this week.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Anything else of importance come out of the press conference.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Elliott Well, I think the surprising thing was that we're
not surprising is sincerely, but I thought they might have
made a couple more tweaks here and there. Obviously the
changes around the two players and the HIA protocols with
Boden Barrett and Cody Taylor both being ruled out, fairly
standard replacements. They're nothing out of the ordinary with a
suffer on Moller coming in and Damian McKenzie. But I

(03:13):
thought they might have tweaked the bench a little bit
or brought some of those players that play well off
the bench last week and Voiguard, who of course was
outstanding off the bench Patrick but lot too as well,
maybe brought those players into the run on side. But
I think over the course of the year that last
twenty minutes has been such a problem for the All
Blacks that maybe they look at it and go, okay,

(03:33):
we'll finally got the bench humming along. Don't change things
so quickly and keep those players in position and look
for that last twenty twenty five minutes from cam Roy
guard or look for that Patrick three beloaded ball carrying
in the second spell and get what you want to
out of it again rather than necessarily switching them back in.
And you look at the team as well. A lot

(03:54):
of players, as we've discussed backing up again from that
performance at Twickenham six state turn around really really short.
But they want their consistency. They want their performance and
I think they feel that they could have beaten England
by more last week. The eras let them down their discipline.
If they can sort that out, then they fill their
own with a real chance of knocking over the world

(04:15):
number one in Ireland in a couple of days time.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
I guess the big work on have been in the
short turnaround times six days. I mean discipline, giving away
too many tackles off the ball and so on. Just
eliminate the penalties as much as they can and they
could win by a big margin. I reckon.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah, Look, I think their discipline is the big one.
And England with throwing little you know, very very smartly,
you know, trick decoy runners into the line and forcing
the All Blacks defenders into a decision. And it was
a very smart tactic by England, but it forced the
All Blacks to make a decision. And that's why there
were so many penalties for players off the ball, is
that England were running interesting lines that the All Blacks

(04:54):
had to basically go fifty to fifty we're going to
tackle this player or that, and on a few occasions
some of those decisions we're incorrect so whether Ireland has
noted that and going to attack like that come Friday
night here and Dublin is going to be interesting. But
I think the All Backs will back themselves to get
that discipline right this week, the handling right, and things
might click even further than they did a Twickenham for

(05:16):
the you know, this big game, which you know we're
hearing from some of the Irish journalists today very much
looking forward to it. There's a real sense of occasion
around this Test match and I think the All Blacks
are buying into that as well.

Speaker 1 (05:28):
The Irish have named their twenty three. So what have
you made of that side, Eliott?

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Oh, very predictable from an Irish perspective. I think you
look at that team and every member of the run
on fifteen that's playing on Friday night here in Dublin
was a part of that quarter final last year. The
first five. Jack Crowley didn't get on the park on
that occasion. They kept Johnny Sexton out there for the
full eighty minutes in his final Test match, but you

(05:55):
know he was on the bench. So every member of
this run on fifteen was part of that Matchday twenty
three last year four Ireland and they've picked a team.
And one of the host journalists actually asked this of
Scott Robinson, does it feel like a team that's been
picked for the next World Cup or does it feel
like a team that's been picked to win this Friday night.
Scott Robinson didn't give much of an answer straight back

(06:16):
at that, but it feels like Ireland just want a
bit of redemption, a bit of utu this weekend at
the Viva Stadium. Nothing's going to replicate or take back
their World Cup result from last year, but it feels
like they've gone with that same lineup and gone right
go out there and get some revenge or an aspect
of revenge for that performance at the World Cup last year.

(06:36):
It's very predictable, very much playing to their strengths. At
some point Ireland are going to let some of these
senior players go, but like South Africa, over the next
two or three years building to twenty twenty seven. But
they have decided the time is not quite yet for
them to break those ties with some of those players
that have played more than one hundred tests, and you
look at the bench, Ken Healy's played more than one

(06:57):
hundred tests. Peter o'mani Connor Murray. You know, it's a
very very experienced bench that Ireland can roll out. It's
not about impact. It's a bad experience to close the
game out and they're clinging onto that at this point
in time.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
Well, there's certainly going to be hard to be So
who do you think is going to win it? Earliot?

Speaker 2 (07:13):
Look, I actually think the All Blacks will win it.
I've been steadfast in this prediction that I think they'll
win against England and Ireland and they lose to France
next week. I get the sense from the All Blacks
that they're pretty comfortable with the way they're playing at
the moment. It hasn't all quite clicked, as we've seen
on the park, and very much so last week. It
hasn't all clicks, but I think the All Blacks are

(07:35):
beginning to find a bit more about themselves, a bit
more about their mentality, and I wouldn't underestimate the ability
of closing out a game like that, coming from eight
points down last week at twicken Look, it's going to
be close. I think every match in this middle part
of the til will be close. But I'm going to
say the All Blacks will manage to get the job
done nice.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
So they have a good call Elliott. We look forward
to that on Saturday morning, New Zealand time. Thanks for
joining us, mate problem, just be Kate. It's good
