Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport
Well talking nitball now on the show where the Fast
five Knitball World Series is in christ Church this weekend,
Saturday and Sunday. And a fast five netball is like
you've never seen it before. Five players to a side,
shorter corters, power plays, super shots. It's a game you
(00:21):
don't want to misjoining us on the show this morning,
Silver Firn's head coach of It, McCausland jury morning of it.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
More than that, how are you brot?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Very very well? Thank you? Does it take extra extra
special skills to be a coach of a fast five team?
Speaker 2 (00:38):
You will to say. We had our first team training
together and it would probably be best described as hit it,
but maybe that's fast five. So we're just heading to
our second training now and hey, good group, you know,
really enthusiastic. We've got a few who have played before,
so that's really helpful. But there's lots of new rules,
so everybody's in the same boat in terms of looming
(00:59):
fast and getting ready to go.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Yeah, so tell us about the new rules because it
is a little different fast five net ball, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yeah? Yeah, The three critical new rules. One is the
powerplays been extended from one minute thirty to two minutes
at the end of each quarter, so the quarter is
a six minute, so you play four and then two
minutes in a power play. And the other pieces that
in the power play is Previously you could get double
points for all shots, but now those double points are
(01:28):
only relevant if you take a two or a three
point shot, so the one point shot doesn't get the
double points in the power player that just plays is one.
And the other rule is that you can't go backward.
So part of the I guess spectator and the whole
concept of fast five is about lots of movement and
the pace at which you go. So once you move
(01:50):
through a third, so goal third, cent a third to
goal third, you can't go back into a third, so
that it just gives lots of opportunity be technically a
student and challenge the players. So yeah, those are the
three significant changes.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
For somebody like yourself has been involved with traditional netball.
Is it hard to get to your head around fast
five netball?
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah? I think it is. I think what I really
enjoy about it, and Tiya and I, who are coaching together,
both enjoying the opportunity to think technically, and I think
that's the nice difference between the seven a side game
and the five. But absolutely we're learning just as much
as we go and we've only got three trainings with
the girls before we play our first match against Jamaica,
(02:37):
then Uganda and Australia, so big day on day one
on Saturday. So yet we're learning fast and collaborating together
obviously with the players and us as coaches.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
I imagine fitness would be a huge thing in fast five netball.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Yeah, I think. I mean fit is huge in any
sport and it's a critical base of performance. But the
great thing about fivers really for us being able to
make those changes quickly and you can get the fresh
legs on really early. So it's finding that balance between
continuity and performance and the consistency without unsettling, but making
sure that we've got fresh legs. So we've just called
(03:15):
it a vinterval training. They just go, go, go, put
everything into it and then get out and get off
the court. So the only county you've got to that
is you know, you don't normally have combinations together for
very long, so it's their ability to really settle into
tasks quickly and make a difference and then get back
out and freshen up.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
And you don't you don't have a wing attack or
a wing defense.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Do you. No? No, you have a goal shoot, gold
attack center, and then you have a gold defense goalkeep.
So the gold offense and the goal attack their work
rate goes up, and obviously is a center the same.
But what's really nice is there's lots of space, so
they've got a lot of area to play in and
a lot of movement and it's defensively is probably the
(03:59):
biggest challenge are to stay one on one in track
and look for the opportunity to get turnover. So it's
a really great game and we're really enjoying the challenge
of getting better at it and looking forward to that
first match.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
The Aussies the team to beat.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Well they're the current champions, so you know Australia are
always puss But every team, I think that's the nice
thing here bring quite different player groups with them. So
there's very few who have players that transition from both
their seven a side international team into fast five, but
there are a couple. U Ganda have got Marrit you know,
(04:38):
two meters that's a good challenge in itself, so I
think every team has got potentially. You look at Jamaica
and they're always superbly, athletic and unorthodox in lots of ways.
So we've got a huge respect for every team that's
in the competition, and we're just making sure we're learning
fast and executing what we know we're good at and
playing to our strengths.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
Perfect breeding ground for Silver Ferns as well. Getting these
players international experience.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Yeah, I think it's one of the things with international
opportunity and fewer of them that fast five provides that
chance for these players to at least learn some international
style and get exposure against other countries. And all of
these players are in the Silver Firm Development Squad or
Silver Ferns. So coming into our program is Maya Wilson
(05:27):
and Ed and Amikidi, who have both been busy obviously
in the Silver Fern Constellation Cup. So we've got a
nice balance of the young ones coming through play like
Caston Hall, this is her first time in a program.
Martina Salminda literally just you know, in their early twenties nineteen,
(05:48):
so really neat to see these young players get opportunities.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
And we've got men playing too, haven't we across the
weekending just for the women.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
That's right, the men's team. We've got a little bit
of a practice against the men and while they play
quite different, they've got the ability to play with a
lot more heights. They play quite aerial and they're super fast,
but that's a really good opportunity and they won last
year our New Zealand men, so we're getting some good
runs against them, and they go up against Australia who
(06:19):
beat them in the current series that they just played.
So youah, no good challenges for all of us.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Fantastic. We wish you are the very best of luck
for training and for the mixings across the weekend event.
Thanks for joining us.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
