Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sport, the Latest from the Land and just great rock.
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on gold Sport,
your home of live commentary International Rugby League Now and
the Kiwis have finished off the pace, were off the
pace in the Pacific Championship but they won over Papua
New Guinea and that was important winning that one fifty
four to twelve to finish third. Earlier Australia Big Tonga
(00:23):
in the final twenty to fourteen. Joining us on the
CSPB this morning to talk the league range the cod Morning.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Frank Morning b k fifty four.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
To twelve win for the Kiwi's their best performance of
the championship. It came a little bit too late. What
are you made of the performances by the Kiwis in
the last three tests?
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Well the first two year that'd be disappointed with the
results obviously, especially the Tonga lost, but you know they
come back and they beat Papu New Guinea, which I
think we all expected. But they ended up winning it well,
even though P and G did contest it in the
first twenty minute or so. But then the key we
took over just before halftime and she was all over.
(01:04):
But the thing that came out to me was the
young fellow on his debut, Casey McClain. I mean he
replaced William Warwick just before the match. He goes out
to course four brilliant tries and I thought the best
effort of his was the one he set up. So
he won a great debut eighteen year old from Penrith
(01:26):
and he had something like seven or I think seven
NRL games and you know, a player of the future.
He took his opportunity big time and that's.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Good to see. And I mean I'm talking about players.
I mean Shawn Johnson his final game in pro league
and he was basically at his best, really, wasn't he.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Well you could see when he went out there he
was out there to enjoy himself and he did and
he couldn't have picked a better game to do it
and to go out, So you know, he went out
of his career with a great result. Even had a
kick it goal and put one over and hit the
post for the other here. Yeah, I think, gee, I know,
you must have had about four four or five triases,
(02:05):
it would be something like that. But he was right
in the game. Yeah, he was at his best. When
you look at that, you think, well, he can carry on,
but he has. I think he's at you at the
end of his career now and he could have gone
out a better way. You know.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Do you think the state of international rugby league is
in good Nick after this tournament?
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Look, I think it's very good.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Nick.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
The worst thing about it is the timing of it
at the end of the year with so many good
players out with injuries and getting operations for the following year. Everyone,
every player loves playing for his country. It's the pinnacle
of rugby league and my books and still is. But
the timing of it, when do you have it? Do
you have it at the end of the year when
(02:47):
they're all injured, or do you have it at the
start of the year after their pre seasons. But I
think the clubs that have something to say about that.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
I mean, it's pretty well supported by the fans. They
love it, don't they.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
I think they proved that, especially the Tongue fans. You know, well,
I tell you what, they're unbelievable. You know, no matter
where it is, whether it's an organ christ Church, they
turn up and they make some noise and that's great
for the game. It's fantastic for the game. So the
game is actually telling the administrator something, so they need
(03:22):
to sit up and listen and work something out.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
You know, I live in Tarang and the last two
weeks you've had there's a couple of issuvs that have
been driving around here with tongue and flags flying from them.
Wherever you see them, there's all these big tongue and flags.
So they are massive supporters.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
You see it here in christ Us but mainly an
Orcand of course when I went up for that tongue
and test, the last one, not the recent one, but
the one before that, I mean all you could see
was issuvs with with flags and tongue and flags. It's
just it's unreal, it really is.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
They love it. Hey, what he made of Stacy Jones's
first three tests in charge.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Well, to be fair to Stacey, you know, it was
pretty tough for him with so many good players pulling
out with injury. So under the circumstances, you know, he
would have preferred two wins out of or three out
of three, but he would have accepted two out of three.
I think the tonguan last might have shook him a bit,
but all that is is telling Stacy. It's the reality
(04:22):
of Ragia League at that level. I mean, you know,
when you look at it, there's been a lot of
upsets at international level in the last few years and
it can happen now. But look, you know, I think
he'd feel satisfied. He's got his career, his coaching career
at international leve level underway, and you know he's got
to improve on that and learn from it for the future. Anyway,
(04:46):
we were talking.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
About Tonger, I mean they put up a fight against Australia,
didn't they in the Means final twenty to fourteen. They
went down. What did you make of that class?
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Oh, they competed well. I mean the one thing about
Tonge they always start well but they finished poor. But
they actually fought a lot better against Australia in the
final last night, and you know, credit to them. I
mean when you look at their team, they've got some
very good players, especially in the forward pack, and as
good as anything in the world. So you know you
(05:15):
would expect them to perform and perform well. With the
team I've got now.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
And the Kiwi Ferns, they fall into the Jewelarus twenty
four four how did you rate the Kiwi Ferns through
the Pacific Championship.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Oh well, I love watching the women at that level
that they honestly they played fantastic rugby league and I
don't think they played bad at all. I think they
were beaten by a very very good Australian Jilaru side
who are really skillful. But know how girls are getting better.
There's a couple of girls and our team as good
as the Australians. I thought the fullback was it was
(05:53):
at Arpi Nichols. I think that little fullback played fantastic
by Geh's brave and the number eleven that went off
at the end I thought. I watched her here in
christ Church the secondar and she went terrific too, and
again yesterday until she went off.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Now that's the league season done and Dusta, you can
put your feet up for a couple of months before
it all gets underway again. Frank, thanks for joining us mate.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
It's a pleasure. B Kay, have a great day.
