Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the rugby field to the rotary shed.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport. Yes,
New Zealand Trotting Cup day today and I guess the
big question is can the local horses maintain a proud
home record against the Aussies. And they've come over and
force Aiden Radley joins us out of tab track side Morning,
Aiden Morning Tier.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Two Brian and down in christ Church. It's typical of
a New Zealand Cup day. They reckon it just doesn't
rain in christ Church and a New Zealand Cup, I
think there's only been one in the last forty years,
a wet one. So we get here to gorgeous conditions
and yeah, what a race they we've got in front
of us. That New Zealand Cup is.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
A beauty absolutely, So the Aussies have come over and
forced this guiding they can win the cup. But the
locals have got a proud record, haven't they.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Yeah, they sure do. I think there's only been sort
of maybe two or three in the last twenty years
the Aussies that have won. But normally when they do
come the bringing a strong one, they were bringing the
horse to beat and lead to fame. But unfortunately they
vetted the horse before he was meant to get on
the plane to New Zealand and his bloods weren't right.
(01:09):
So they're just saying, no, we're not going to take
him there if we can't be one hundred percent sure
that he's going to run up to his very best form.
So he's been left behind. But because there was a
little cloud over his head. Swayze, who won the Cup
last year, they'd put through a late entry into the race.
It cost him something like twenty eight and a half
(01:29):
thousand dollars to do, so it's bad he gets over
here in the right form. He's a really good winner,
a soft winner at his last start, and he comes
into the Cup looking to defender's title. So the ausiest
did winner last year try and stop them with the
best of the kiwis.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
They must feel as though they could win that cup
when you have to pay an extra twenty eight thousand
dollars to.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Enter a race, Yeah, absolutely right. But obviously with the
stakes money up there so much, you know they're running
for seven figures today in New Zealand. Tronning Cabin is
obviously the blue ribbon of harness racing in New Zealand
and it's broke together a really good field, it's top quality.
But yeah, undoubtedly they're justified in making that late payment
(02:14):
just the way he's going and obviously looking to do
what he did so well last year.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Swazey add who do you fancy in the Cup? Then
what's your tip?
Speaker 1 (02:24):
I think normally on New Zealand, Pom you just got
to really put your trust in what we saw out
of Dashburston last time out. That the Flying Stakes has
always been a really good semi final lead up to
the race, and Merlin ran so well in that race.
He just seems to be in great form. He's on
top of his game, he's got a great record, he's
(02:45):
won so many good races and he's just in the
right care So im with Merlin, I think he can
hold out Swayzey and the other one obviously is don't
stop dreaming who was really good and running that last second.
Then he seems to be building the right way as well,
So yeah, I think it's probably a race in three.
(03:05):
Hopefully Merlin can do it for the Kiwi. But yeah,
obviously real respect around Sways and what they've had to
undertake to get here.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
How much is the draw important in a race like this.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
It's pretty crucial, and it's also pretty crucial about just
how they get away from the standing start. A lot
of these horses, you know, they get used to mobile starts,
whether they're moving already, so they get into that standing starts,
and so much practice, so much preferation goes into it
behind the scenes with the trainers and obviously their staff
(03:42):
just and making sure that they can be one hundred
percent bulletproof at getting away. So it is key, and
one thing we will see are especially around those three horses,
that they will be put into the race at some point.
There be horses who will want to take advantage of
good drawers to get the right run in the race.
But you know that Ways is going to come round
and you're probably going to expect that, don't stop dreaming.
(04:04):
And Mirlin will will also be put into the race
at some point, so there will be fireworks. I'm sure
Methew Cross it does a great job for us at
track side of describing the action, so I'm sure he
will help build a real anticipation of what should be
a thrilling finish to this race.
Speaker 2 (04:23):
I'm a great believer in sort of going by names
when it comes to picking a horse in a race,
and because I love the all Blakes Mohanga, Ricky Mwanga,
so the form of Moanga.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Well it's covering into it in a really good form too.
The last couple of winds have both been very good.
Robbie Close does the work with this one, and yet
I'm just going to say he's into it and you know,
probably the right form you want to be heading in
New Zealand Cup. And the only thing is and he
obviously has drawn nicely in Barier four as well, but
(04:55):
these are the top liners you're up against, the absolute
cream of the crop. Yes, so yeah, I'm happy to
see you're with one, and hopefully you might have to
put it into your first floors or you know, you
can back them top four finishes and even the tb
A doing things like top six and top ten finish
as well, So there's definitely options for VI if you
(05:15):
want to have a little punt there, Brian.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
And of course it's also a Cup weeks so there's
lots of other race meetings coming up this week too.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
In christ you John there, Yeah, they're sure it's NonStop
down here. We've got a really good meeting at Rickitten
tomorrow that does feature the TB Mile which is a
really good race, and also the Breeder Stakes which is
another really good one. I think there's fourteen hardest races
at Ashburton on Thursday thirteen for show Day on Friday
(05:44):
at Eddington and then we get back here to rickart
In on Saturday. I'm meke surely here at trackwork this morning,
just getting a lot of the main contenders for New
Zealand carp that's also Group one one thousand Guineas day
and the Stewarts is the big sprint for the week
as well, so NonStop center and christ Church for the week.
And yeah, there's a bit of a buzz around the town.
(06:05):
There's certainly getting to track with this morning. You know,
everyone knows that the part of what is a terrific
event for the city.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Like a pig in the old Paverbia Aiden. Hey enjoy
and good luck for the cup today mate, Good on
you and.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
You two Brian. Hopefully you can back a winner as well.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Yeah, let's hope so Aid and Rodnie joining us out
of tab track side with that big rate set to go.
The race set to go exactly five forty six
