Speaker 1 (00:00):
International rugby coverage on the Country Sport Breakfast is proudly
brought to you by Access Solutions, elevating you and your
business to a higher level. Just thought I played a
little bit extra of Billy Joels my life there right
international footy now in the All Blacks, I guess Ruin
missed opportunities in the second half of their narrow thirty
twenty nine loss to France in Paris. Doesn't get any
(00:22):
more narrow than that, does it? Leading seventeen ten at halftime,
the All Blacks allowed fourteen unanswered points coming out of
the break, including a fiftieth minute try to the French
winger who pounced on a kick following a loose pass
from New Zealand attack.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Joining us on the CSP this morning to look at
the action.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Over the weekend for Mo're All Black half back and
now gold Sport commentator and straw Morning.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Ann, Good morning BK. Beautiful game day in Tomcky, Makoto. Mate,
the sun's out.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Gotta love that absolutely in a magnificent day in the
Bay where I am as well in Taruga.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
So Hey, your thoughts on the test? Was that the
one that got away?
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Yeah? I think so. BK first and foremost. I thought
it was a great rugby Test, though I mean, apart
from the I guess the referee slowing the game down
at times, just with the resetting the scrims and anything
that that we hate, you know, take that out of it.
It was a Test that had everything I thought, you know,
wonderful start to the match, the occasion itself that the
(01:18):
French always put on, don't they a wonderful spectacle. But
it just it just had all the pieces to a
great Test match, I thought. And you know, you'd have
to say that with the possession and territory that the
Oblacks had and the opportunities they created, yeah, they'd be
disappointed not to win that one.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
And of course the French had that extra help of
the crowd. It made such a difference in the second
half of them, didn't it.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
It's a wonderful speedical, isn't As I mentioned, you know right?
The theater from start to finish was superb. And the
the other thing I really do like is the French
love the rugu but they respect their opposition, you know.
And the quietness with the hock at the start, you know,
just it's it's just them isn't it the French and
you know, and of course they love the All Blacks.
That's the test match of the year. But I did
(02:02):
sense a bit of relief at the end of that
from the Pont and a few of the other Frenchmen
that they've got away with this one.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Let's talk about the half back of position a position
you know, well, Cam roy Guard what a talent and
I think he got the better off Monsieur du Pont
as well. Do you think coach got Robinson regrets subbing
him out so early.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
Yeah, it's interesting, isn't it, Because this All Black team
has just started to build some real just off the bench,
and you know, Rachima has a skill set to change
the temper of the game. You know, the All Bis
look to be tiring a little bit through that second half,
and of course bringing him on to change the speed
of the game is actually often quite a good one.
But you did right, Cam Rouyer, considering he's come back
(02:44):
from that phenomenal injury. He just gets better and better.
He takes his opportunities, you know, his all round games
impressive and he's actually becoming one of our strengths. I
think this All Black team as we look towards the
World Cup.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Of course, that's stealing her to score they try. That
was fantastic, wasn't it.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Just a wonderful heads up play, wasn't it. And he
got in between two really important players for the French
and yeah, just his ability to steal the ball off
kind of a little of a loose off loads was
one of them. Was a real strike for us too,
wasn't it. We needed him to score at the time
and he did.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Yeah, all right, a player that got called on early,
Willington Lucy. Peter Larkeye, how'd you raise his second test
in the All Black Jersey?
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Couldn't have been any better, could it? The amount of
touches he got in the game, his energy, the way
he complimented Adisav I thought was also impressive because you
bring a player on and female was going to come
into this game to really add some steal defensively, particularly
but with his carrige. So of course, losing him early,
you know, everyone thought it was a big loss. But
Peter Larkeye he did everything, didn't he? And I mean
(03:50):
he was spent at the end, but a wonderful test,
that's for him.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Do you think Scott Barrett made the right decision going
for the three in dead of for the line out.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Look, I think all of us are sitting on the
couchs going, you know, these three pointers are coming very easily,
but why don't we change it up a little bit?
You know? But it's always difficult, isn't it. I mean
we're not out there in the heat at a moment.
You can see the trade of his thought into they're
just staying close to the French, you know, just creating
that buffet where you can win with another penalty, which
(04:23):
is what he was doing. And of course it didn't
come off, and so we always jumped to the other
side saying why did we kick to the corner hea
a cracket scoring a try? So you've probably got about
a fifty to fifty split across country there.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Yeah, you've got to take your head off though. To
the All Blacks, I mean they're a young team, aren't they.
So they're still on a sort of I think a
growing curve, aren't they.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yeah, they are, and I mean they've surprised us heaven
they Let's be honest, I don't think we thought that
they go up in this Northern tour and probably win
and they should beat the Italians, you know, three out
of the four with all jurisdic to them, so you
have to say that to us being a six. But
you know, we're hungry for wins, aren't we as New Zealanders,
(05:05):
And beating the French is obviously the plinnacle because they're
playing very well and they've got a great record at
home as well, so we probably feel a little bit
underdone or you know, with that game. But of course
they have had a good tour and they're building nicely.
There's some wonderful players coming to like you've meant to
be the lucky and obviously we've gone through them as well,
but many more as we build to the future. And
(05:25):
I think, you know, they've made a nice statement. They've
built some internal confidence as well, not only in the
players but also the coaching group. So you know, I
think we're checking nicely.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
And it's been a tough season when you think about it.
All those players have been playing since probably January of
last year in the build up to Super Rugby and
then Provincial rugby and all Black Tests, so it's been
a long long campaign, hasn't it.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Yeah, I think we underestimate that to be honest. I mean,
you know these demands at every level for our players.
You know, they obviously play super rugby. As they mentioned,
it's a long season. Then course someone do fold back
into a little bit of NPC and then you know
these ends season tours are not not a cakewalk, are they.
But we're still playing against some of the best in
the Northern Hemisphere. So yeah, long drawn out season maybe
(06:12):
something to consider moving forward because you know it's a
long elongated season and not the best for them.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
It wasn't like that in your day, was it.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
No? I don't think so, man. I mean we played
a lot of club rugby, didn't we back in the day,
you know, playing with our grassroots mate you know we
grew up with and you know that will never happen again.
But you know we had some downtime where we could
sort of recover, rest and recover and not play as
many games, you know, So you know, who's to say
what's better, but I think maybe less as best. Sometimes.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Let's talk about the other games that have gone on
across the weekend, and I mean, what's going on in Wales,
Poor old Warren Gatt and we can't buy a break
Canny they've gone down to Australia today fifty to twenty,
which I think is the biggest score or in Wales.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Australian team.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Yeah, I just told you to produce a Markelie off here,
and I think it's the worst loss they have had
the Welsh, you know, Warren Gatland. I mean they've rolled
some losses together, haven't they. And I mean I know
they are rebuilding, they're starting again almost from scratch, but
you know how many losses can you endure before you
know some changes need to happen. I mean that's a
(07:23):
that's a punishing defeat, isn't it. And I mean the
Australians are getting better, but they're still not the best,
one of the best teams in the world, so you
have to put that in context as well, so you
know they'll be bitterly disappointed.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
The well, they've got Scotland to come and Ireland, so
they've still got a couple of tough tests ahead of them.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
They yeah, they have, but I think you know, by
the same taken. You know, we just talked about the
All Blacks and building nicely through twenty twenty four into
twenty twenty five, and I think the Australians as well.
They've just taken time probably to adapt to Joe Schmidt
and his coaching regime. But you know, they just seem
to be so much more connected. This tool will do
(08:02):
them a world of good. I think, you know, just
it's about bringing a team together and galvanizing them and
you know, sort of kind of believe each other really,
so yeah, that all goes well for them.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
And the poor old England three losses in a rude
going down to South Africa as well.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
They still look strong South Africa. O day.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Yeah, I watched that Test Net Chicks and you know
the way the English are playing rugby, I think it's
it's more expensive than they normally have played, and they
scored a couple of really nice tries as well. But
the South Africans and we can also see a little
bit of influence of Tony Brown and the way they're playing.
A couple of the trial's got ruled out, of course,
but they're just starting to use the ball bit better.
(08:38):
But see they kick a lot, don't they. It's a
real kick, and suffocate defensively and of course they're they're faced.
Defense was impressive at times when the English really really
tried to score, so you know they're certainly looking and
are the number one team in the world right now.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
And it's great of you to join us on Monday morning.
Enjoy the rest of you week mate.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
