Speaker 1 (00:00):
Whether it's gun boots or rugby boots. The Country Sport
Breakfast has you covered on gold Sport, your home of
live commentary. Well, the second oceany A Challenge, which is
an official World Bowls event, featured national teams from the
Cook Islands, Nue, Norfolk Island, sam Are, Tokalau and Tonga,
along with the Australia and two teams from New Zealand
(00:23):
and yesterday had all wrapped up in Auckland. Kevin Hicklin's
been watching the action.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Kevin, good morning, Good morning Brian. How are you wearing gang.
They're good to be talking with you again.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
Oh nice to catch up with you mate. And what
a weekend you've had looking at all the action and
the Oceania Challenge.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
So what happened, Well, you know there was a great
spread of medals really to be fair that you know,
we saw meddles go to a variety of countries. But
I suppose that we saw in my view, the rising
star of Briar Atkinson, the young Taranaki paratuge player who
of course did well at New Zealand Singles last year.
Is just come back from Hong Kong which we played
(00:59):
an invitation pe years over there with Selena Goddard and
finished third and got the bronze medal. And here she
was again lining up last on the weekend, representing New
Zealand on the twenty sixth side, where she took out
the women's singles over Michayla and Nathan of Tonga and
Aidan Takara, of course, the New Zealand singles champion about
(01:22):
to start playing fact again today which I'll tell you about
that event shortly. Another big events side in Auckland. He
went down in the final to young Jack Lewis of Australia.
So whoever what I would call younger players Atkinson and
Aidan Takla a certainly showing to the New Zealand selectors
that they're not far away from going all the way
(01:42):
to find themselves. In the former New Zealand side and
the women's peers, we saw North Oak Island defeat the
New Zealand under twenty six side in the final. In
the men's peers we shall talk about defeat the New
Zealand on the twenty six side. In the women's triples
we saw Australia defeat Samoa in the final and in
(02:03):
the men's triples finals we saw the Australian development side
the defeat is on the twenty six side in a tiebreaker.
And in the women's fours we saw Australia defeat the
Tierra Mauris girls side of Lisa White, Divina Mills, Gaden
Kawana and Agnes Mojor going down narrowly to Australia. And
(02:24):
in the men's falls the Australian side were just too
good on the day for the at Tierra Maria's side.
So all it all fantastic of four days played two
venues at Royal Oak and at Newlyn and to me
the highlighters to see the consistent and continuing improvement of
Bria Atkinson and Aiden Taker as two of New Zealand's
(02:48):
young leading players going forward into the summer of bowls.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
I think the thing I like about it also, and
you've mentioned the fact that the Pacific Island teams having
success like Tokolao and teams like that, which is great,
doesn't it.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Well, it's been fantastic, Brian. There's been quite a bit
of money and time put into some of the weld
called the regional country Samoa, Toma, Tokala, the cooks at
Cuatra to Norfolk Island to get a strong combination of
players and events throughout the region which we haven't had.
And this does this for us of course because now,
(03:23):
of course with the Commonwealth Games coming up in a
couple of years time, we've got bowls as one of
those selected sports which will be featured at the Commonwealth Games.
So it gives these regional PACIFICA sides a fantastic opportunity
to build themselves for a slot to line up on
(03:43):
the Commonwealth Games in the future.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
So you mentioned that, Okay, the Oceana Challenge is over
with Australia winning the challenge on seventy two points, but
there's more balls this week. So what is happening this week?
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Yeah, certainly year is twenty nine countries and the men's
singles and twenty four in the women's singles line up
in the World Champion and Champion Singles to be held
at the Browns Bay Cub going right through to Saturday.
And they play set play, which is different to your
normal twenty one ends or shot, so they play set
play and New Zealand'll be represented. And how you get
(04:17):
through to this bride is you win your individual Country's
Singles Tournament the singles event. So last year in christ
Church we saw aid In Takara the Beach Sheldon Beggy
Howley in the final, so that s is Aiden Takara
representing in the men's and in the women's. Last year
in christ Church we saw Leeann Paulson defeat and here's
(04:38):
that name again, Bria Atkinson in the final of the
women's singles Solemn Paulson of County's men account and current
Backjack Shelby representing New Zealand. In this world field they
come from. As I say, there's twenty nine countries in
the men, twenty four in the women. So it's a
very very it's a big event, prestigious event. Last year
(04:58):
it was held at Been on the Gold Coast. This
year it moves to New Zealand. And of course we're
fortunate now we've got World Bowls is now based out
of Australia and the new World Bowls President just been
announced in the last few days and that been Beret O'Reilly,
well known bowler and bowls administrator over many years. Will
(05:20):
Brett just been appointed as the World World Bowls President
going forward for the next few years. So what it's
seeing for us brightens all the major events really got
opportunity of the movement in between New Zealand and Australia.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Fantastic. Well, that's a great event to have Brown's Bay
Bowling Club over the next week or two for the
World Singles. Hey Kevin, thank you for joining us, mate and.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Enjoy Thanks Brian, good to talk
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Kevin Heckland joining us, looking back at the Oceania Challenge
and then of course this World Champion of Champions Singles
starting at Brown's Bay Bowling Club right across the course
of the World
