Speaker 1 (00:09):
Well, the All Blacks produced an ERA ridden twenty nine
to eleven victory over Italy in a Chili Turin to
finish this season with ten wins four losses. They were
did seventeen six at a half time, but we're able
to score again and captain Scott Barrett and Anton Lennett
Brown yellow carded as well, and each half Camroy guard
Will Jordans scored in the first half of Mark Tlear

(00:31):
and body Barrett crossed the line in the final ten minutes.
Joining us on the CSB this morning, our man on
the ground, I think in Munich this morning with the
team as Elliot Smith morning, Elliott.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Good morning, Beach Hall goods and Morgan, I should say
from Munich Airport.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
On your way home now are you with the team?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
I am indeed he is looking forward to getting home.
Couldn't take too much more of the cold weather. It
was minus one at points last night, so looking forward
to getting home to a Kiwi summer, that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
How does a commentator like yourself or a social media
post of view with a beanie on sitting in the
standings you're in calling the game? Was it cold in
the commentary box?

Speaker 2 (01:07):
It was the coldest of experience in the game. In
all honesty, it was freezing. We're outdoors and fortunately the
wind wasn't up. That was probably the main thing. But
it was just icee cold. You could feel your limbs
beginning to sort of freeze during the game and lose feeling,
so trying to stay up and warm and keep focused

(01:27):
on the commentary. But it was fairly brisk, sort of
weather wise. And you know, I know there's a cold
venues around New Zealand, christ Jurge the outdoor stadium there
and Dunedin as well, but certainly the coldest of experience
for a broadcast and experience I don't want to repeat
again a bit sooner or honestly, do.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
You think that had an effect on the All Blacks performance,
because it wasn't an impressive performance by the All Blacks
actual actually quite impressed by Italy. What did you think?

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yeah, Italy, I thought defended really well and scrambled and
put the All Blacks under prety. Sure, I thought the
All Blacks looked every inch of a team that had
played thirteen Test matches prior to that point, and a
lot of those players were backing up for the fourth
consecutive week in Wallace, at Ted's case, it was the
fifth consecutive week. They looked like a team that was

(02:16):
ready for a summer break. You've got to always be
on in Test rugby, and the All Blacks certainly weren't yesterday.
It was enough for them to get the victory, but
certainly not a performance that they'll look back on with
too much fondness. I wouldn't have thought. They made a
lot of errors, allowed Italy to disrupt them around the
ruck and it just forced them into mistakes around the park.

(02:40):
So look, I think the All Blacks will be breathing
asidh of release that they got through that one unscathed
and with the victory. But you know, not a lot
to take out of it, I don't think, And it doesn't.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Help getting two yellow cards again for the All Blacks.
There's been a problem for them, hasn't it.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
It has not just this season, but in previous seasons,
and it doesn't seem like one that the All Black
to New Zealand Rugby are able to shake at the moment.
At the start of the season it looked like they
managed to get a hold on it. But yesterday it
felt like they slipped back into some poor habits, both
you know, in discipline wise and also with handling as well.

(03:17):
And look it was cold and man, maybe some brain
snaps or brain freezes with a tonic behind some of that.
But you know, look at Scott Barrett one. There wasn't
much in that crock roll tackle, but it is something
that world rugby clamping down, and he opened the door
for the TMO to make that decision by the actions
it was Tackley pulled out relatively quickly and no further

(03:38):
harm done. But again they invited that, and then Antoninette
Brown's one result of you know, a lot of cynical
penalties written down that other end of the park. So
the All Blacks invited that yellow card being shown from
the referee. And again it's something that the best teams
in the world, you know, South Africa they pushed the
boundaries and the All Blacks have as well in the past.
But you've got to be on the right side of

(03:59):
the law. And Bill Blacks, worryingly, I think more often
on the other side of the law than on the
right side of it.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
Elliet one of the big talking points out of the
Test and didn't come out of the game itself, but
the pregame Harker. What's been made of the TJ per
Andara leading of the Harker and his comments.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, look a lot we made out of It's hard
to get a read on it from here in Europe,
but certainly looking at social media post game last night,
it had blown up. I've got a couple of texts
from journalist colleagues that were back in New Zealand about
the message. I didn't tweak to it, I'll admit at
the time of the Harker. It took hunt postmatch and
sort of reading through and catch up on a few
messages to see exactly what had happened. But you know,

(04:45):
the TJ Peanara and his final Test match putting the
mickey heads at the start of the Harker, and he
is the client of the Harker and he my understanding
is that he asked the question of the teammates whether
they'd be happy for him to put a message of
unity at the start and put that message forward, and

(05:06):
it's very much. The KaiA is saying that mehi their
message at the start of the Harker and then the
team joined in the harker. So while it was message
of unity, TJ Peninara explained postmatch, he came out and
explained to us the New Zealand media that was there
around the decisions for doing so and why he felt
it was important that a message of unity was important.

(05:28):
He was saying that it wasn't a political statement but
one of unity and he's taken the opportunity to do
so and seemingly had the packing of his teammates. Yes,
Scott Robertson, the coach, said that it was presented to
them Scott Barrett as well and they allowed t J.
Petinara to make that message at the start of the Harker.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
I thought there might also have been some backlash over
all black team. I've never seen an all black team
posed with a flag representing a movement before. What are
your thoughts on that?

Speaker 2 (05:57):
Oh, well, look, I think it's a flag that is
it means a lot to the Maldi dim of New
Zealand and the Maldi culture of New Zealand. You see
it flying you sort of flying at the Heky last week.
You see it at moments of pride for New Zealand,
moments of sadness, whether it's the death of you know,
someone in the Maori monarchy. So it is a flag

(06:17):
that clearly means a lot to the Maldi players in
the team and is respectful. I don't think it's a
major in all honesty. You know seen All Blacks talk
about their some all in heritage as well, Adixa Viga
being one of those players that is priud to to
have you know, some aon heritage and the All Blacks,
many of them Maldi have played for the Maldi All

(06:37):
Blacks as much as the ten ten tanger flag is
is part of Maldi dim and part of a movement,
so too as the Maldi All Blacks. And so you've
got to take, you know, whatever part of that. I think,
you know, if you if you're willing to have the
Maori All Blacks, and you've got to be willing to
allow the team to pose with that flag as well.
I don't think you can pick and choose, and I

(06:59):
don't think the All Blacks who are wanting to make
a huge political statement about it, But clearly it's something
that a lot of players in particular feel quite deeply
about and that's why they did that all.

Speaker 1 (07:10):
Right end of the year pass. Now, how was your
player of the year when you look back of those
fourteen tests.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
Oh, look, it's hard to pick one because I think
at points of the year there've been players that have
stood out and then players that have been injured. And
you look at someone like Cody Taylor, who I thought
had a really strong start to the year and then
obviously took that knock that left out of the Island game,
but I think he's been consistent. Two po VI's come
on leaps and bounds this year from a player that

(07:38):
was sort of in the shadows of the All Blacks
locking department for three or four years has really stepped up.
And then someone like Wallace a t T as well.
So really hard to back between those three players, but
I think one of those three would be probably my
player of the year. I think they've really you know,
especially Wallace a TT, a player that wasn't on anyone's
radar really for Test rugby at the start of the year.

(08:00):
Now hard to leave him out of the side to
get ten tests by the end of it, and looks
a vital part of that team going forward. So yet
all those three players, the things stood up and the
All Blacks, you know, can take some positives out of
the year with those players that has stood up. But
there's a lot to look at. Is they look to
build for twenty twenty seven and the World Cup over
the next couple of years.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
And what about the grades you give the coach Scottie
Robinson raisor Robinson after his first year in charge ten wins,
four losses.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
I probably lean towards six out of ten potentially. Look,
I think it was a good year without being great.
Perhaps if they'd beaten France, you could elevate that up
to a seven and seven and a half. But coming
out of the wrong side of leader, there the poor
performance in that game against Italy, two games against South Africa,

(08:47):
one of which at least they should have won, and
then the one that really sticks out, like you know,
the proverbial is the loss to Argentina and Wellington, the
game they had no business losing. Argentina are a good team,
they're building and nicely, but Bill Blacks should have put
them away that night. And it stands out like a
sore thumb that result this year in terms of judging

(09:08):
it on the basis of those fourteen tests, so I'm
probably about a six out of ten room for improvement
BC reckon.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Yeah, I'd probably agree with you there, mate. All Right,
how long's you lay over in Munich before you head home.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
We've got about three and a half hours here before
we head over to Singapore and then home, so I'm
gonna go see what I can find rutwurst or stein
bear or you know we on offer at the terminal.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
Good boy, mate, well done on a great season and
safe travels home.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
