Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sport, the latest from the Land and just great rock.
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on gold Sport,
your home of live commentary. Well, time to catch up
with our good friend John Norman normally in the UK
but enjoying not quite summer yet in christ Church. You're

(00:21):
welcome to New Zealand.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
John, Yeah, welcome and it's great to be here after
you know, a decent slight you know, only thirstyod hours.
Steve Hamerson was with us here to fly from Heathrow
rather from Newcastle down to Heathrow. He had a six
hour week before he even got on one of the
big flights, so I think it's well that forty two
hours for him. But you know, once you make the journey,

(00:45):
it's worth it. It's got to be worth it than
to travel that distance, and it always is when you
get to see it. When you get here, everyone just
relaxed immediately. Everyone's very much looking forward to the cricket
starting tomorrow. But yeah, I'm not sure about the weather.
It's very reminisce of what I left behind. There's great

(01:07):
sleet skies, there's rain in the air, it's chinney. But
tomorrow is going to be twenty eight degrees, so you know,
who knows, who knows, But wonderful to be here.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Yeah, okay, so it is great to have you here
as well. You find forecast for tomorrow, so we'll go
and look at things that are going on in the UK.
Getting a favorit of rain over there as well. But
man City losing.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
It again, I know, astonishing and they got absolutely pulverized.
Tottenham has been a bit of a bogie team for
Manchester City over the years, but very few, very few
forecasts this happening. I mean, look, we know there's some
problems within the Manchester City camp. We know they're missing
a couple of individuals, key individuals. But to go down

(01:53):
four now home to Spurs, and the manner of the
defeat as well was absolutely historical, most because the City
had been nine unbeatable anywhere, but especially at the yet
he had so yeah, that was a result that really
reverberated around the league. And then of course Liverpool just
kept and keeped quietly going about their business, not necessarily

(02:17):
flamboyant or exciting to watch two one down against Southampton,
one of the worst teams in the league, but found
a way to win the match and now they've got
a handsome lead at the top of a division where
everybody seems to be able to beat everybody apart from Liverpool.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
It's an interesting competition really at the moment, isn't it.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Well, it's a fascinating one, you know. As I mentioned
Steve Harmerston, he was cursing yesterday. He was expecting three
points at home to west Ham and they lost to nil.
I flew in on Saturday, woke up at four am
bright as a button watching Fulham wander up against Walls.
I was hoping we were going to go third successive

(03:01):
win and then we lost fort one. So it's the
kind of league where everybody can beat everybody. Everybody is
beating everybody at the same time. There's no consistency apart from,
of course, the Liverpool at the top of the table.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
So John, you've been here four or five days now,
you've probably acclimatized, you're over the jet leg and you've
probably been mixing and mingling with the England cricket team.
So you know what's the latest story from that side
of the pitch.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Well, the big story from the England camp occurred in Queenstown,
at the weekend. Gordon Cox, who was only in the
side to play ahead of Jamie Smith, who's back in
the UK. The England wicket keeper he's expecting his first child,
picked up an injury in the nets and unfortunately for him,
instead of making a debut this week, he's facing the

(03:51):
flight back to the UK. He fractured his thumb. So
that really brought into focus the squad that England have
brought because it's a real strange one sixteen man squad. Essentially,
they didn't even bring her out and out wicket keeper
because Jordan Cox doesn't do so for his county, so
they've had to shuffle the deck. Olli Pope, who actually

(04:13):
kept wickets for England in New Zealand in twenty nineteen.
He's going to be handed the gloves. They've called up
Ollie Robinson, but he's going to make his way from
the UK, so in that Jordan Cox's play incomes Jacob Bethel,
twenty one year old, twenty first class games, an average
bowling average of ninety seven. He's never hit a first

(04:36):
class century and suddenly he's going to be expected to
bat in the most important position in the batting card.
So you know that's just the way that England go
about their their work. But why the squad selections come
into even more focuses. They brought three spinners, three spinners,
and New Zealand aren't even going to play the two

(04:59):
spinners that spun them to victory in India because of
course christ Church is not a pitch that is exactly
famous for ragging turn and sharp bounce from the slow
from the slow men. So very strange England have named
the eleven they do go in with an out and
out spinner in show of sheer. New Zealand have at

(05:19):
named theirs, but we know they're not going to pick
a spinner, an out and out spinner anyway. And then
phillips that he's listening, he would bridle that's at the
suggestion he's anything other than an out and out spinner
spinning all round her. But yeah, very different and contrasting
styles ahead of the first Test. But that's one of
the reasons why why we love Test crickets so much.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Nah, absolutely, And don't we love the result out of
Australia a day or two ago with India putting Australia
to the sword.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Wow, it unites us doesn't it He unites us as
as people. You know, we could just sit back enjoy
Australia as you know they've got what's made that result,
that heavy defeat. You know, let's not forget they the
last Test they played in Australia, they lost to West Indies. Okay,

(06:09):
so let's just sit back and think we've got ten
days now because there's a two day warm up between
the first and the second Test matches, So ten days
where the Australian press and media are going to have
to conjure up new angles, worse and worse takes, just
ramping the pressure up day for the next days because

(06:32):
those columns have got to be written, the pages have
got to be filled, the airwaves have got to be
spoken on, and by the time that second Test gets underway,
you can just imagine just how rabid it's going to
be over in Australia. So just enjoy a quality Test
match which is getting another way tomorrow between England and

(06:53):
New Zealand. And during the London Tea breaks, just castrize
over over the Tasman, just dip into the angst that's
going to be taking place in Australia.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
Well, when we talk next week. We would have won
the first Test, so we'll look forward to chatting. We
look forward to chatting next week, John, thank you so much.
Enjoyed christ Church definitely.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
I'm just about to go on a two hour walk
of christ Church with Milmanthorp who's alongside me. So yeah,
I just going to learn a little bit more about
this beautiful city ahead of this first Test getting underway tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
Fantastic. Enjoy your stay there. Johnny Norman, our UK correspondent,
now out with the talkSPORT team in christ Church for
the First Test getting underway leaving tomorrow. ACC have the
commentary on iHeartRadio. It's
