Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the sports field to the shearing shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Well. Our summer of international cricket gets underway in this
country this morning, just after eleven out of christ Church's
Hagley Oval, Black Caps and England the first of three tests.
Joining us on the show this morning, a man probably
not on the ground yet, he's still in his hotel room.
Andrew Orders in morning Orders greeting speak.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
I'm in the blocks though, I'm in the blocks. I've
just got a couple cup of tree underway here, a
little breaking of ato action. I'm really looking forward to it.
It's first and the only Test series of the summer,
so I got to make the most of it.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yeah, you did, right, and I think a lot of
Is that why we're also excited about it? Because it's
England number one and it's our only Test series, really,
isn't it?
Speaker 1 (00:48):
I think so? And I think too there's renewed levels
of excitement around the black Casts speak after this historic
victory in India, and you know, just as an example,
being stoked means at least twice yesterday, his comments of
the press are just in awe that New Zealand'll be
able to complete this unprecedented feet by any team. He's
(01:10):
at home, you know, for some time, just certainly, you know,
comparing comparing to other nations outd the world and putting
it in context. But I think there's that element to it.
You've got the World Test Championship all of a sudden,
New Zealand, if they did perform well across these three tests,
they'd be in the reckoning potentially if other results go
(01:32):
their way for the final in June. And you've got
Okay Williamson coming back. You've got the Day Test cricket
and number two in eighty eight but he Zealand Nathan
Smith probably batting at eight and bowling as part of
that full prong pace attack. So there's all sorts of
elements to draw us. I think, all right, well.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Let's talk about Nathan Smith. Two weeks after playing his
first OD I's and all around her, he's going to
make his Test debut. What do you know about him?
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Orders Well, he's from Omru originally, is my understanding, and
some fierce backyard battles with brother Jeremy by all accounts,
but he's made his way through. I think he even
has to emulate or mimic Tim Saudi in the backyards.
That's an example as to how things come full circle
with Saudian in his last test series and he's you know,
(02:22):
New Zealand's domestic player of the year. He's I think
top of look at taking tables. He's performed strongly at
plunket shield level and is rewarded accordingly for That's hopes
he'll considered a bowling all around it and hopes he
might be able to deliver a bit with the bat
in that la order as well. So he's he's earned
(02:44):
his way through the system, Nathan Smith and has been
bestowed with this cap today, presuming he gets out onto
the field.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Do you think it's a gambled naming him in the squad?
In the team?
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Are you potentially? I think you know, look, I mean no,
Kyle Jamieson at the moment, who's normally spot He's got
a Chimney Smith and I think it's probably that you know,
ability with the bat that might offer a point of
distinction for him coming into this series. So on the
the rest that New Zealand side was pretty established it
(03:18):
at the moment, he's it's not af we say this,
but there's a bit of an embarrassment of risk is
if you can get rid of Will Young in India
and replace him with came went into the number three.
They're saying that things are promising at the present time.
B K.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
I would have thought, but tough really on Will Young
after he was awarded Player of the Series in that
historic three no win over India and he gets dropped,
which is amazing. But in came Williamson. I mean he's
just come off a couple of games for ND in Hamilton,
who was in the runs of Wee Bit, wasn't he
he was?
Speaker 1 (03:52):
I think he's got sixty and then a four. I
think the four was when they were trying to I
guess see the title pretty quickly from what I can
understand for that ND. But Williamson, I mean, yeah, there's
one player you're going to bring back under any circumstances.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
He's it.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
So that will be fascinating to see how he goes
as well. Just had to look at the picture briefly
there yesterday b K at Hagley Ogle and it was
probably wasn't as emerald as I've been used to. When
you come down here, Yeah, sometimes when you struggle, you
need a sort of a microscope out to kind of
differentiate between the pitch and the outfield. But I thought
(04:27):
it was just a little bit duller in color or
brips and when we have seen this in the past
here with I think Dean Elga opted to bat for
South Africa against Zeland and I think they won that
TAS match. So I'll be fascinated to see what happens
at the toss today, particularly if if Ben Stokes wins it.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Yeah, I think that's going to be crucial, isn't it
the tass and who wins it?
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Yeah? Yes, I think that that will be one of
those elements that draws you in early. Is So what's happens?
I mean that I think, you know, the relentless aggression
from England is not going to dissipate by you know,
the reckoning yesterday from what Stokes is saying. So it
could be a quick match, a quick Test match, but
(05:07):
a fun Test match.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
We'll wait and see, and of course the three Test series.
Tim Salvey last series before he hangs up his bowling shoes,
he's been a real store of New Zealand cricket, really
hasn't he.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Well, he has, and I think that he'll be given him.
You know, the due reflection on his feats are probably
across the series and what we've seen from over the years,
and you know, he really has, along with Williamson, shadowed
this golden era through and I think that you know, Sallium,
he's lost a little bit of pace of late and things.
(05:41):
I mean, always had a fantastic set of hands as
well in the field that's often underestimated. But I think
that just the fact that he's been there has been
a real start, as you say, across this team. And
yet he started his career against against England in Napier
with that debut Test way back in two thousand and eight,
and yeah, a chance to I think he'll get a
(06:02):
really decent send off wherever he goes on this farewell,
Farewell tour.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
England. They're prepared to inject another dose, I guess of
bas ball against the black Caps in this test. I
mean the team's last squared off in the Red Bull
format in February of twenty and twenty three. So what
do you know about the England team, Well.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Look, they I guess it's a couple of fascinating elements.
I mean when we saw you think about series, I
mean that was the series with the New Zealand winning
the follow on Test, I think, just the fourth time
in history that had occurred, and of course winning by
one run in that Test at the base in reserve
with Blundle catching Anderson down the league side off Wagner,
(06:45):
and that would be just one of the most strawtry
games that I've attended, that's for sure. But this current
England team, but this experienced I think at the moment,
particularly in the bowling ranks. You know, Jimmy Anderson now
knows Stuart Broad and they brought Jacob Bethel into the
lineup at number three, which will be a fascinating prospect.
(07:05):
And he comes into Jordan Cox, who's fact has thumb
the wicket keeper. Only Pope's going to take the gloves now.
But he moves from three to six in the order
and Bethel has not made a first class century, but
they're picking him on spec. Basically there's a white ball
player who they think has the talent to make it
in the red ball format. So it's not often you
see that around the world if you compare it to
(07:26):
not say Nathan Smith. He's had to work his way
up through the first class renks in New Zealand, through
plunketshill cricket to get that cap. Bethel is more of
a speculation. I saw him yesday actually going down to
the nets. He looked pretty pensive. He was coming down
the stairs as Ben Stokes was running up them, and
he sort of turned to one side he came down.
(07:47):
He looked touch nervous, at least to my observation, but
understandably so. But a lot, I guess, an opportunity to
mendous opportunity for him, but also there'll be a pressure
that comes with that.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Right the weather, that's always the big question. Last reports
we had an hour or two ago. It's a fine
Dan and Christ it's still looking good.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Yeah, looking good today. All accounts bay northwest to coming
across them. That all strengthen as the day goes on
up to about thirty k's I think, but fine as
the temperatures in the high twenties, and then that'll dip
away tomorrow as a suddenly replaces that northwester. But it
should be pretty dry and really parched, and that may
(08:28):
contribute to that batting element as well. If you think,
if you want to bat first, that things will dry
out and you'll get the better of the conditions, perhaps
than normal. So I think it should be they should
be looking ahead to the forecast as well. It should
be fine throughout the Test one way or another, albeit
it might be overcast in a couple of days. Boll.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
We look forward to your reports on how well the
media get fed tomorrow morning during the day. I know
that's a big item on your on your agenda, mate.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Yeah, key barometer. That's right, that's what we judge out
test matches on absolutely.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Alrighty, all right, talk tomorrow, enjoy the Test, alright. Andrew
Ordison joining us out of christ Church. The cricket getting
underway eleven o'clock today, and of course don't forget the
ACC the alternative commentary team there and they'll have ball
by ball coverage of it as well on iHeartRadio. All
getting underway at eleven o'clock this morning. Here
