Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rugby Field to the Rotary Shed.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's the Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold
Sport well Time to talk cricket now on the show.
We're only a matter of a day out from the
second cricket Test at the Basin Reserve. Looking forward to
that one between New Zealand and England and a man
who will certainly be looking forward to it as Sport
Cricket Editor, Johnny Norman.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Morning John, Yeah, good morning to BK. Very much too
good for to tomorrow, hoping that we have a more
competitive Test match. Obviously enjoyed the result from an English perspective,
but there's nothing to beat, you know, reill ever flow
higher quality nip and tucks test cricket for three or
four days with a exciting conclusion and that's what we

(00:45):
got the last time we were in Wellington for that famous
one run when when the New Zealand won the game
after following on for it the third time in the
history of the game. And yeah, more of the same
would be.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Great, It would be nice, It would be nice. So
coach Brandon Colum, he's names an unchanged oliving for the
sick and teaster. What was that a surprise for you.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
No, not really. We look, you don't change a winning team,
do you. The only question mark was surrounded well those
two question marks. First off, would Olie Robinson play and
he's been brought in to keep wicket, But the feeling
was it was unlikely. Only Hoope did a good job.
He scored runs at six and with Jacob Bethel, you know,

(01:31):
reaching fifty on debut hitting the winning runs, he would
have been the one who had actually have made way,
so that kind of made sense. He's only just arrived
in the country a few days.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
Ago as well.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
The other question surrounding Stokes himself. You know, he didn't
complete a seventh over. There was a few concerns that
maybe he picked up an injury that would reflect or
restrict his ability to bowl. If that was the case,
then Matthew Potts probably would have come in as a
bowler and then Jacob Bettle would have missed out. So
the fact that Stokes can play to the full capacity,

(02:05):
as soon as that was clear, then yeah, an unchanged
team seemed more likely than not.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
What were your thoughts on the slow overrate fines that
were handed out yesterday to both teams after the first Test.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Well, you could see by the way New Zealand were
hairing around in the outfield in that they in the
fourth day, you know, despite the fact that defeat was looming,
they were racing through. They're over. So you know, it
masses to New Zealand because they were still in the
chance of reaching the World Cup far the World Tests
Championship Finals that now looks more than unlikely even with

(02:42):
even if they win the last two. England don't really
care about the World Test Championship, you know, Jimmy Anderson
has said that, Stokes has said that, and it's a
shame because it's actually a format that was flawed has
brought greater relevance and more excitement to Test cricket. You know,
we're coming towards the end of Test cycle and essentially
we're all keeping an eye on a series involving Sorlankms

(03:05):
and South Africa in a way that we wouldn't do
if not for the World Test Championship final because both
can still qualify. Adds more importance to the Border Glabasca
Trophy as if it needs it, as if it needs it,
So you know that's exciting in itself. Could Australia or

(03:25):
India miss out, and then of course New Zealand. You know,
they came into the series knowing that if they won
three and nil, possibly two to one, they could qualify
as well. So I just think that the ICC have
shot themselves in the foot here. I mean, they're the rules,
you've got to stick by them. But you've just robbed
your own tournament of an exciting conclusion just on the

(03:46):
basis of an overrate situation which the players don't even
pay those fines, they don't care, and so it's just
a nonsense really, So it just adds even more ridiculousness
to what was actually a ridiculous for competition in itself.
But you know that's how it is.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Do you think the umpire should have more involvement in
that situation?

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Well, I just think that cricket needs to sort itself out,
work out a way of making it making it work.
You know, this doesn't work at the end.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Of the day.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Though six overs were lacking on the day one, seven
on day two and ten on day three. The fans
are being robbed of what they're paying for. Something needs
to be done, but this is not the way to
go about it.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Still, lots of talk as far as who the black
Caps will be playing on the day. If you were
coaching New Zealand, would you make any changes to the
team from christ Church?

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Well, I don't know. I mean, look, if the team
has been good enough for the first Test, you know,
at the end of the day, don't dropped all those
chances and you know then they would have been a
competitive test mate. The teams are loaded these days. To
drop batters midway through a series and to suddenly bring
in a new keeper, change the batting order, you know

(05:02):
that that brings more trouble than it's worth at times.
But I can see the appeal because you know he's
in the need to win the series and needs to
be bold, and they need to be bolding with bat
in hand, with ball in hand, and maybe with team
selection as well. But we know that is not the
news in the way, so we could moan about it,
but they're pretty consistent. It feels down to me. I

(05:23):
don't think there's really you know, the two options of
Mitchell Sandler coming in who let's be honest, ahead of
the Indian series, that taking one five in first class
cricket in thirteen years and no great shakes of the
bat you know, those which enter hold and then Will Young,
who hasn't scored a Test century, they're the options. They're

(05:45):
the guys coming in. So if you're in England, you're like, well,
you know, are we going to lose any sleep? Bolding
to Will Young as an opener with the greatest respect, No,
and Mitchell Sandler is a quality They're both quality individuals.
But it's not as though you've got a bowler coming
in with three hundred Test wickets or a batter with
you know, ten for ten Test centuries. So I can

(06:09):
understand the need for change, but I'm not sure those
are waiting to come in offer any huge change in
terms of the strength. Now, if that picture is going
to spin, then yeah, And I think the fact that
Satina spoke to the press yesterday suggests that he will play.

(06:29):
I don't think the batting will change. So if Santa
does play, who does he come in for? Now? Again,
if the karma things are coming to South, I can
understand it, but I think it's a bit.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
Of an ask two a team of Henry a year,
Santna and Smith, you know, to.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
Take twenty Test wickets seal they bowled really well in
that first innings and he bowled well with a new
ball and unlike a lot of the New Zealand fielders
can catch I mean unless he's unable to bowl three
back to that prismatches, which is question and then return
with Salve as long as the Test goes on. And yes,

(07:14):
Singland did look to attack him on day four. But
who's more likely to take wickets? You know? Is it
going to be if Santa plays and it's between Smith
and Salve. I know Smith will put Boldwell on debut.
Who are you going to back to take four or
five wickets? I'd still and with the new ball as well.

(07:36):
I still think Salvi takes more laugical if defensive option
over Smith. It's just a question of whether they think
that the picture is going to turn. Are they going
to want to get bitten two times in a year
at Wellington they didn't go in with the spinner against Australia.
Glenn Phillips ends up taking a five for Lion takes
ten pers. You know, do they want to repeat that mistake?

(07:57):
I don't know, But I don't know. I don't think
there's an obvious solution. So a lot will come down
to what the pitch looks like Johnny, we spoke.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
A couple of days ago on having all your equipment
stolen out of your commentary box in christ Church. Any
word on the stolen equipment.

Speaker 1 (08:17):
No, we've heard nothing since. But we've got replacements, so
you know.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
We go on.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
As I say that the more expensive of the two
or what I said a couple of days ago, the
more expensive of the two cameras was low painting. So
we've got a replacement backup camera or secondary camera. So yeah,
we're done and the insurers are do the rest.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
Fantastic, Well, enjoy the base and reserve, Enjoy working with
my producer Mark, and good luck to England and the
taste match mate.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah, looking forward to seeing Mark. He's going to be
part of our production team like he was when we
were over in Mount Montaneri at the end of the
start of life.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
It's just a shame we're not ending up in that Moni, but.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
You know, yeah, absolutely fantastic. Thanks for joining us, mate.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
Go well, yeah, cheers me kay take care seven
