KFI AM six forty. You're listening to Dean Sharp The
House Whisper on demand on the iHeartRadio app. Good morning
and welcome home. I am Dean Sharp, The House Whisper,
custom home Builder, custom home Designer, and course your guide
to better understanding that place where you live. Every home
(00:25):
has a path forward. Once you see it, everything changes.
You don't see it. It's confusion, it's chaos, it's I
don't know what to do. How do we handle this?
I don't know what our options are. But when you
see the path, then everything changes. And I am here
to help you find that path. And we do that
every week and today, of course Saturday morning on the show,
(00:49):
it's an all Calls Saturday. It's your calls today. The
phone lines are open. I am here, you are there.
It's time for you and I to talk about whatever's
going on with your home. Eight three three two. Ask
Dean that simple eight three three to ask Dean eight
(01:10):
three three the numeral two. Ask Dean. Whatever has got
you scratching your head about your home? Be it a
design question, architectural issue, construction, DIY decor, inside, outside, hardescape, landscape.
I got you. We're gonna put our heads together, we
will get it figured out. And now the clock is sticking.
(01:32):
It's all about you. I'm here, we're here now. The
question is when are you going to join us right
here in studio and talk about your home phone lines
are open now we'll just wait for the calls to
start rolling in. In the meantime, let's say good morning
to Sam. Good morning Sam, Good morning Dean. How's it going.
(01:52):
I'm good. I'm good. I heard you didn't get a
whole lot of sleep last night, but you are still functioning.
And no, I was right, but unnecessarily well. I went
to bed early, which is different. But then I just
couldn't stay asleep for the for the life of me.
So but I'm happy to be here. This place always
gives good energy. Oh oh, and there's our there's our
(02:13):
live studio audience. Are not so live studio audience. They're
always filled with good energy I have. Those are some
of the Those are some of the most frustrating nights though,
you know, when you're like, you know what, I'm going
to bed early. I just want a good night sleep.
I'm going to bed early, which is a rare thing
to set that time aside. You're like, I'm just doing this,
I'm making a good decision, and then you're just laying
(02:34):
there in bed staring at the ceiling until you know,
two in the morning. Yeah, that was pretty much what
happened last night. Yeah, all right, well, all right, glad
to have you here, my friend. Of course. Who's that
over in the newsroom?
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Is that over there?
Speaker 3 (02:48):
It's me Heather Brooker Head.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
They're Brooker i Heed doing bud.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Hello, it's so nice to see you this week. What
a pleasant surprise that was.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
I know, I didn't even tell Tina, because you know,
you're my radio wife. So yeah, so it's like having
a family in a different city.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Do you know?
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, No, I was. I was. I was on the
fourth floor walking around and all of a sudden I
looked up in there was Heather. I know.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Did you know did you hear Shannon's on Gary and
Shannon talk about how they've cast you? She's cast you
in there?
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yes, there was like a whole video and everything we did,
we did.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Yeah, yeah, she no, she grabbed me in the hallway and said, okay, listen,
I've got this thing going. I'm like really a sci
fi warrior or something. Yeah, we spent most of our
time talking about the costume that I was not definitely
not going to wear.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Oh no, she has a vision. She is all planned
out and she we're doing it's a vertical short because
those are really in right now, and she's got it
all planned out, and so we we talked about that
Gary's going to be in it as mister bumber Puss.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Yes, it's going to be I have a cool name.
I forget what the name of my character. What she said,
I'm like some kind of warrior and my sidekick is
mister bumber Puss.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
That's right, that's Gary. So we like, I'm I just
wait to know. I'm encouraging this behavior and I want to.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
I want to.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
We need to make this. We need more KFI original
original movie.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
Can't fight original content.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yes, get the Netflix originals. We need to, can't buy originals.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
All right, No, I'm down. I'm totally down. I told her.
I said, whatever you want to do, my friend, I'm there.
Just you know, it's all good. It's a good sitting
across the table from me, look at you, my design partner,
my better half, my best friend on the planet, perhaps
in the Solar system. My actual question Mark Tina is here.
(04:50):
Good morning, welcome home. How you doing.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
I'm good?
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Yeah, yep, sure, yep. Are you gonna let us know something? Mmm?
I'm excited about today. I know we're having your little
you and Christy little birthday celebration today. I thought you
were going to happy birthday?
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Is just your birthday?
Speaker 4 (05:15):
It was last It was Monday, last Monday, Oh birthday.
Tim Conway Junior and I share a birthday. Oh my gosh,
that's right, that's right. Are you guys going to go
to Marongo tonight to party? I know we're not going
to Marongo, but sometime we should jump on the whole
you know when birthday thing.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
That guy with these birthdays, well, happy birthday?
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Thank you? Okay. So I was setting you up because
I thought you were you're going to at the gym. No, no,
not the gym. I don't know what what you know
what time of year it is, it's for all y'all. There,
you just bade me right. I am so impressed. I'm
so em that when you spurted that out. Yes, last
(06:02):
week just came out. I was so excited. Did we
have pumpkins all over the yard? So now I'll just
be I'm just gonna toss to you today tomorrow. I'm like, Tina,
what time is it? It's fall y'all? All right, listen,
my friend's the coffee cup on the desk today. It's
a oh, it's a Disneyland cup and it says Disneyland
(06:27):
will never be completed as long as there is imagination
left in the world. I love that sentiment. I feel
that way about my own self person hmmm. And the
design of homes, and the design of homes which probably
you know it's time to get back to now. Hey,
look at that, you think so all right, well it's
time to go to a break. I'm looking at the
(06:48):
phone board right now, the callboard. I don't see any calls.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
So if you have everybody wake up, oh, because because
it's fall y'all.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
All right, y'all, the number to reach me eight three
three two, ask Dean. Everybody needs a nudge. It's been
a sleepy fall. Everybody needs a little nudge. So if
you have tried calling in the show before, I thought
about calling in the show, now is a perfect time.
We got runway for you right now. So there's room
on the callboard for you when we come back. I'm
either going to take a call or I'll take a
listener question that we've sort of banked up here in
(07:21):
our list. Either way, i'd rather talk to you live
eight three three two. Ask Dean eight three to three
the numeral two. Ask Dean, you are listening to Home
with Dean Sharp the house Whisper, Dean Sharp, the House Whisper.
I'm gonna have to resist commenting on, or maybe i
just won't even try to resist commenting on. The television
(07:45):
themes that Sam's using to roll into the show today.
Was that Hawaii five?
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (07:49):
Yes, absolutely, Now now I'm totally dating myself completely complete.
People are like, what what's Hawaii?
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Fuck?
Speaker 1 (07:57):
What it? There was a remake though, right, yeah, remarried
long ago. Similar. I think it was the same theme song. Okay,
all right, good good, Yeah, No, it's about that new one.
I had no idea about the old one, just the
it's the new one, That's what I'm talking about. Yeah,
all right, it's an all call Saturday morning. Thanks for
(08:19):
joining us here. You're up bright and early Sundays, even
up here in southern California. If you're elsewhere across the country,
of course it is. And I hope it's breaking open
on a great new day for you. It's gonna be
a great weekend here. Hope the weather is treating you
right wherever you are. It is an all calls Saturday.
The number to reach me eight three three two. Ask
(08:39):
Dean eight three three the numeral two ask Dean and
lo and behold. We got some calls on the board.
So I want to go and talk to Barry. Hey Berry,
welcome home.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Thank you. It feels good to be home.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
Well, that's true. Have you been away from home too long?
Speaker 2 (09:02):
No? But I'm just saying I love being home. You know,
I'm seventy one years old, so you know I love
being home and relaxing.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
I got you. I feel you. I feel you, my friend,
if I was seventy one years old, i'd feel good
about being anywhere.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Yeah, you're funny, but that's correct.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
So how can I help you, my friend?
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Well, I'm having a problem, Dean, and it's not a
major problem. But when I turned the air conditioned on
the house, the whole house is cool, but it's not
cool in the bedroom, the master bedroom, it's not. And
I'm wondering why I've changed the filter. Tried to you know,
(09:57):
make adjustments, but it doesn't work. Should I do?
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Huh?
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (10:02):
And so we're talking central air conditioning and the rest
of the house is doing just fine. And now do
you like when we say it's not cool in the
master bedroom? Do you like when you is that? Is
that all the time? Or it's is it when you're
you know, you're when you're sleeping at night?
Speaker 5 (10:18):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (10:18):
And if that's the case of time, all the time,
all the time, single story house, yes, yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
It's a fairly new house. And they call it a
smart house in the Tom Springs area.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Okay, so you're like, it's it ain't that smart?
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Right, I'm wondering when my wife turns it on. The
whole house is cool. In fact, you know, sometimes I
even put on cover because the whole house is cool,
but the bedroom isn't.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
Okay, all right, okay, So another couple of questions. Do
we do we have air coming out of the vent?
Can you feel it?
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Yeah? But very little? Yeah, very little air.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
Very little air coming out of vent? Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
All right.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Well I'm thinking that that there's there's something up with
the ducting up in the attic. Uh, you know, okay,
because if we got air coming out of the vent,
all right, and but very little air coming out of
the vent. Then there's there's something up up there. Something
isn't taped upright, you know, maybe the maybe the duct
heading to the master bedroom. Maybe there's a maybe there's
(11:39):
a tear in the duck that nobody caught. Maybe there's
maybe it's you know, poorly connected. Maybe there's something blocking
it up. In the end, it sounds to me.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
So Dane, how would I get disrepaired? Uh?
Speaker 1 (11:53):
How how fairly new is the house?
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Well? Uh, less than ten years old?
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Okay, so I'm just yeah, and did you buy it new?
Are you first owner?
Speaker 2 (12:11):
No? No, Actually we're leasing.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Oh okay, all right, all right, so you're leasing. I
think it's a call to the landlord and saying, hey,
got a problem. I talked to my good friend Dean
Sharp about it, and uh, you know, I'm wondering if
the you know, it's Palm Springs. You know that that's
this is not a time to mess around with AC.
That's not a town where the AC can just be like,
(12:38):
you know, mediocre. So you say, listen, everything in the
house seems to be working great. The air conditioner working great.
It's nice and cool and everything, but there's something something
up with the master bedroom. I you know, my friends
suggested strongly that you call your HVAC guy and get
him out here, because there's probably something up in the
(13:00):
attic blocking that duct. And it's to the most important
bedroom in the house.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
But why would that, Why would something being blocking it?
How did that happen?
Speaker 1 (13:11):
I have no idea. I have no idea. You know, well,
think of it this way. Sometimes it's not even that
it's blocking it. I'm just trying to imagine what's up there.
I'm not saying that something fell in the attic and
crushed the you know, the duct or something like that.
But sometimes a duct when when ducks are taped together
(13:32):
in a system up there, you know, they use duct tape.
There are connectors, connections. Maybe that for some reason that
one didn't get taped up really well and under pressure
when you pressurize the system, it's kind of like having
a hose that may have a leak in it. Sometimes
I've we've gone up into an attic after you know,
(13:52):
a time, on a brand new system, only to find
out that one of the ducks didn't get taped up
fully and now it has kind of blown off, Like
three quarters of the air is just blowing up into
the attic. The duck is barely hanging on. It's not
a big problem. I mean it's literally it's literally a
five minute, two dollars fix. But it makes a world
(14:12):
of difference when the cool air is going into the
attic and not into the master bedroom. So my it
sounds to me, based on what you've said, that the
real issue is a delivery problem, not a massive problem
with the system, not you know, with the equipment or
anything like that, because the rest of the house is
(14:33):
working fine. So it sounds to me as annoying as
it may be, that it's a simple ducting problem that
could get resolved real quick. So I'd call the landlord
and say, hey, you need to get your HVAC people
out here and check out what's going on in the
attic because I think something's up with the duck to
the master bedroom because barely any air is coming out.
(14:53):
Rest of the house is great and there you go.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Well, let me ask you, is that like a major cost?
Speaker 1 (15:03):
No, No, it's not, people, it's really not. You know what, Barry,
I'm up against the break. You hang on for a second, Well,
we'll finish up this conversation right on the other side.
This way, they won't yell at me, and you know,
threatened to fire me for going long. But we'll look
it up and we'll just talk about that a little
bit there and what that involves. We'll do it right
(15:24):
after we come back. Your Home with Dean Sharp, the
House Whisper. You're listening to Home with Dean Sharp on
demand from KFI A M six forty.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
But I'm a bit.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
Dean Sharp the house Whisper Here to help you transform
your ordinary house into an extraordinary home. I used to
watch Bonanza when I was a kid, and I heard
I heard that there was actually a version of you know,
because there were no words to the theme music on
the show. But I heard that there were actually words
and that at some point Lauren Green had sung them himself.
(16:02):
And now I think that was it, right, that was it? Yeah,
that was it. And now I think that was a mistake.
I'm just saying, I'm sure that was I'm not sure
that was the right thing for him to do. All right, y'all,
good morning to you. Welcome home, Dean Sharp, the house
(16:23):
Whisper here here to help you transform your ordinary house
into an extraordinary home. We're taking calls this morning. The
number to reach me eight three three two. Ask Dean
eight three three the numeral to ask Dean. I'm also
going to be given something away here, you know. I
think we'll do it next segment. We're gonna do a
next segment. It's gonna wait and you'll get to hear
(16:44):
about it then. Right now, I want to finish up
with Barry. Barry, You still with me, Bud, Absolutely all right.
So Barry had an ac problem at his house out
in Palm Springs, you know, working great everywhere except the
master bedroom. And I asked him if the event was,
you know, putting out much air, and he said, not much,
(17:06):
not much at all, not compared to everything else. So
I think there's an issue with the ducting up in
the attic, single story home. And it's not unusual for
something like that to happen. A piece of duct tape
tears open or something and now the air is blowing elsewhere,
or something up there accidentally, you know, you know, crushed
the vent or something like that, so that you know
(17:27):
something's including the air. But the good news is it's
a if that's the case, and I'm I'm like ninety
percent sure that it probably is. It's a super easy fix.
You know, a little bit of duct tape and a
little bit of time up there, and you got to
fix so Barry leases and so that means time to
pick up the phone and call the landlord and just say, hey,
(17:49):
a little something going on up there. And I don't
it's not it's not going to be on you, my friend,
not unless you know, you guys have been partying up
in the attic and you know, tearing things up. This
is it's just part of part of what you know,
part of the maintenance that a landlord has to assume
for what goes on in a home. So you're like, listen,
it's not gonna be much. It's just a little service
(18:09):
call of your local air conditioning company or whoever services
the equipment from time to time they come out. I
don't know what they're going to charge, because you know,
that's not my you know, area of specialty to know
what all these service companies charge on their first time out.
But but it's just a quick service call and they're
gonna be there maybe ten minutes and and fix the problem.
(18:32):
That's my prediction. So you could tell the landlord. Listen.
You know, my my home expert friend said, it's probably
not a big deal at all, but it is a
big deal as far as what it's doing to the
house because it's my bedroom and I would like it
to be as cool as every we're wearing. We're wearing
parkas in the rest of the house, and I'm down
to myspitos in the bedroom, if you know what I mean.
(18:53):
So let's just you know, we just need to get
it fixed up. So there you go, my friend. That's uh,
that's the best I got to offer you this morning.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
Thank you, Dean, you're a good man.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
All right, Berry, you take care my friend. Stay cool. Fortunately,
you know, at least we're rolling into the time of
year where it's not you know, blazing in palms. It
means we're coming into high season in Palm Springs. This
is the good stuff that's Palm Springs was born on
the off season, pleasant weather that they have when it
you know, it's freezing everywhere else, all the snowbirds head
(19:27):
out there and play around to golf. So all right, Berry,
you take care of my friend. Okay, let's see where
are we at? Where are we at?
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (19:34):
You know what, we're gonna be up against a break,
So we're gonna take a break. When I come back.
Not only will we go to the next call, but
I am going to begin giving away something that we'll
be doing for the rest of the day, today, tomorrow,
and next weekend. If you are interested, and I think
you know some of you will be, because some of
(19:54):
you are just down to clown and up for fun.
So here we go. We'll do it right when we
come back. You're listening to Home with Dean Sharp the
House Whisper Dean Sharp, the House Whisper, here to remind
you every home deserves great design. Truly, truly. I mean
that with all sincerity as sincere as the get Smart
(20:15):
music is right? Did I get that one right too?
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Sam?
Speaker 1 (20:18):
Yep, Oh my gosh. That was my brother's favorite show.
He named his kid Max, did he really? I loved
that show. I loved that show. It was such a
perfectly time show too. It came out in the early
seventies when you know when the James Bonds, you know,
spy Craze was and it was just a parody on
that whole genre, and it was just it was awesome. Anyway,
(20:42):
what was I saying, Oh, yeah, your home deserves great design.
That's why we're here every weekend. Great design is not
something that has to be luxurious. It's not something that
has to be jaw dropping, awe inspiring. Because your home
is a mansion means great design which meets people just
(21:04):
like man, this is such a beautiful home, period the end.
Every home deserves it. Not just the big house up
on the hill behind the gates, your home too, And
that's why we're here to help.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
We've got room on the callboard for you. By the way.
The number to reach me eight three three two. Ask
Dean eight three three the numeral two ask Dean give
me a call. It's an all call Saturday morning, talking
about anything you want regarding your home. Before I go
back to the phones, though, I'm gonna give something away.
How about that? You know what that's value?
Speaker 2 (21:36):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (21:37):
For those of you who are looking for a little
bit of grown up Halloween fun. How does that sound right?
If that's you On Monday night, October twenty seventh, that
is the Monday before Halloween, Monday night, October twenty seventh,
I hope you will join Tina and I for a
(21:58):
private vip House Whisper Ghost Tour of the historic Kellogg House.
The Kellogg House is one hundred and twenty seven year old,
custom built Victorian mansion located on the beautiful grounds of
the Heritage Museum of Orange County. Now space is limited,
(22:20):
it's a very intimate tour. Space is limited for a
tour inside the house, but for about twenty lucky listeners.
Your evening, maybe that's you, starts with an hour long
meet and greet with me and Tina out on the
steps of the mansion. We'll just be hanging out talking
about anything you want to talk about. Then we'll all
enter the Kellogg House. Wait the Kellogg House for a
(22:46):
ninety minute tour to explore its architecture and its history
and its hauntings. And yeah, it is a legitimate haunted house.
This is a This is not a carnival event. This
is not a people dressed up in costumes jumping out skin.
This is just a legitimate house. And it also happens
to have all sorts of haunted stories around it. So
(23:10):
will we return, Yes, we will, and it's going to
be super fun. The Callogg House Ghost Tour is brought
to us a courtesy of Haunted Orange County, Southern California's
original and largest ghost tour company. You can go to
HAUNTEDOC dot com for more information on all that they
do and brought to you by our very own Brand
(23:31):
Guard Vents, protecting homes from fire with the finest emberproof
vents made harden your home so it will grow old
enough to maybe become haunted itself one day. Go to
Brandguardvents dot com. All right, so here's how we're doing it.
I'm giving away two tickets right now, and it's very simple.
You just give me a call A three three two.
(23:51):
Ask Dean A three three the numeral two, ask Dean
the very first Haunted tour call that our call screener
Nikki picks up up wins two of these tickets. Boom,
there you go. All right, well that's happening. I'm going
to go back to the phones, and I want to
talk to Steve. Welcome home. Go to Frank Guard Ben Stockdout.
(24:15):
All right, hey, Steve, turn your radio off, Bud. Are
you with me? Steve? All right, I'm going to come
back to Steve. I had a little problem there. Let's
talk to Terry. Hey, Terry, welcome home.
Speaker 5 (24:33):
Oh, yes, I have a shower handle at Jimoen and
it's stuck, and it has around on and off and
handle hot left and cold right. I wanted to know
if I could have my volunteer handyman fixed that, or
do I have to call a plumber.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
Well, you know what, depending on the level of skill
that your handyman possessed, you're volunteer handy person. If they
go about it wisely, there's no reason why they couldn't
open that up and loosen it up for you. So
it's a is it a mixer valve, that's what we're
talking about. It's a single handle that you go left
(25:15):
and right, hot and cold or you know, on and off. Yeah,
and it's frozen. It's frozen. In other words, you just
can't get it going. Yeah. Yeah, there's probably access into it,
whether it's removing the back plate and and there's probably
a set pin in there that comes off with a
(25:37):
hex wrench, and so somebody with general handy skills can
open that up. See if they can't get it going,
it'd be a lot less expensive I would imagine to
have your handy person address it then to just immediately
call out a plumber. Now, if they can't get it going,
then you may have to call the plumber out to
take a look at it. But yeah, if it were me,
(26:00):
i'd give it a first shot. In other words, my
own handy person around here is me, And yeah I would.
I would open it up to see what I could
get to before I have to call the others in
on it. So it's probably not a big thing. Sometimes
this happens. It may be a failed part, it may
be a piece of plastic in there that's jammed up,
(26:23):
who knows. But yet normally those things are somewhat accessible,
and so i'd give it a shot.
Speaker 5 (26:31):
Okay, So I don't need to get a replacement handle,
just open it up and see what I need first.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
Yeah, yeah, I mean quite often, you know, a lot
of shower valves, not not all of them, not all
of them, but a lot of shower valves have access
to them without having to dig into the wall or
get a replacement valve handle or anything like that. There's
a way, and they're usually a couple of set screws
that open up the trim, that's what we call the trim,
(27:00):
so we can actually get down to the valve body
itself and see what's going on, So turn off the water,
get in there with the right tools. Should be able
to open it up and find out why it is sticking.
Speaker 5 (27:13):
Okay, you are.
Speaker 1 (27:15):
So welcome, Terry. All right, let's try. Uh did I
lose color? I don't know. All right, we're going to
talk to Oh, you know what. Here, I'm staring at
the clock. It's time to go to break. All right,
more calls when we return. You are with Dean Sharp,
the House Whisper, and now some news. You're listening to
