Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's time for our tech Talk segment.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
The machines are getting smarter.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
This is tech Talk, brought to you by sky Net
and our.

Speaker 3 (00:09):
Friend Mark Saltzman joins us to talk all things tech.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
Mark.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
How you been, Yeah, I'm good, Gary. And Hey Marla. Yeah,
it's been a couple of weeks since we touch base. Hey,
I've been traveling like an idiot. Two weeks ago, I
was in Germany when we would normally do our segment.
Last week Vegas, my youngest turned twenty one, so we
have to write the passage here in our family when

(00:33):
the kids turn twenty one. Were taken to Sin City
and now I'm in Vancouver at an electric vehicle event
that starts tomorrow. So but I didn't want to have
a third week without chatting.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
So well, I hope you're getting all your travel laves.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
I am.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Indeed, it's become a September habit for us to talk
about the new iPhone that comes out, and iPhone seventeen
is about to be debuted.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
What can we expect next week?

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Yeah, well, well it's newsworthy because it's the number one
phone in the country. So this is where people are
waiting to see if they should upgrade or not, whether
it's through their carrier or they just buy it on
their own. So on Tuesday, Apple is hosting it's what
they're calling inspiring event at Apple Park in Cooper, Tino,
and so yours truly, along with many other tech journalists,

(01:21):
are anticipating kind of what we're The buzz has been
out there for a while. So four new models iPhone seventeen,
the iPhone seventeen Pro with you know bf er Spex,
the iPhone seventeen Pro Max, which is larger and a
better battery. And then what's new this year is allegedly
the iPhone seventeen Air, so a much thinner device that

(01:43):
seems to be a trend. Pixel and Samsung and other
phonemakers like Honor they're doing the same thing, only five
and a half millimeters stick by comparison, the iPhone sixteen
is almost eight millimeters. If those who you know want that,
I don't know why you need your phone to be
that thin. As long as it's durable, I guess it's fine.
But more importantly, perhaps for all four models, the rumor

(02:06):
is a much better display. It's a one hundred and
twenty hrtz refresh rate instead of sixty, which is on
the iPhone sixty, and that just makes scrolling that much
smoother and gains that much smoother. It's really noticeable when
you're looking at the device and touching it. Writer displays
up to two thousand knits, so it's twice as bright
for outdoor viewing, like in the sunlight. A larger battery,

(02:29):
so maybe not the sexiest of features, but certainly a
good practical one. So up to a five thousand million
battery in the iPhone seventeen Pro Mac, so you won't
have to charge it up as often, maybe squeeze it
in two days, which would be a significant upgrade over
previous iPhones. And then you know the regular the better cameras.

(02:49):
What is new is maybe what's called reverse charging on
the Pro model. So that's where on the back of
the device, not only can you wirelessly charge your iPhone
by placing it on a Chi max charge up without cables,
but you can put other devices on it like AirPods,
and that will charge up using your phone. It'll train
your iPhone's battery a bit, so that's kind of neat.
Some other companies have done that, so that's what we're

(03:10):
expecting on the iPhone seventeen front, unless there are some
major surprises on the accessory side. Apple Watch Series eleven,
Apple Watch Ultra three, which is their more rugged outdoor model,
rumored to have satellite connectivity this time, so if you're
in an area where you're off the grid, you're stuck,
I don't know, camping somewhere in the desert. You can

(03:31):
send an emergency text through your watch, which you previously
weren't able to do with Apple AirPods Pro three, So
new airbuds, Apple TV four K and new model that's
the little box that you connect to your TV. Rumored
to have a camera so you can do FaceTime in
your family room. And then finally, an Apple Home Pod

(03:51):
with a display, so like a smart speaker but with
the screen, which Google and Alexa have done already. Apple's
playing a bit of catch up in that department, but
considering that our smart home is becoming a lot more integrated,
people may want to touch enabled home pod. So that's
that's the skinny pun intended for what we're expecting with
the iPhone Air and other devices on Tuesday.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
I'd be afraid that I would put the Apple iPhone
Air into my pocket and then sit down and it
would snap because it was yeah, yeah, hey, it's.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Already joked online. But look, so we'll see. Mark.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
I was going to say, I have the iPhone twelve pro.
You think I should go for an upgrade?

Speaker 2 (04:35):
No, I always say, never upgrade every year. That's my
two cents about well, I haven't ninety percent hype and
ten percent innovation, and that's being generous. Where you do
notice a big upgrade is when you wait a couple
of years.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
Okay, in that category you need.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
To innovate, there's yeah. I would say, yeah, if it's
been five generations since you've bought an iPhone, you will
most definitely notice difference. But don't just ditch your old one.
There are lots of websites and apps where you can
sell your iPhone, or you can trade it in with
some places and get like a few hundred dollars still,
so you know, even though it's an iPhone twelve, it

(05:13):
still has some value because it's iPhones. Don't try that
with androids.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Pune twelve.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
I used to laugh at people like you marlve it. Now,
what is yours?

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Mine?

Speaker 1 (05:21):
Of fifteen?

Speaker 3 (05:22):
Only because I choked down the price tag on that,
and I finally bought it. But but to use Mark's
advice because I know I've listened to it before. I'm
going to wait several years before I write, you know, hopefully,
hopefully I'm gonna wait seven I'm behind the a ball.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
You could also another option, Marls, to wait for when
the iPhone seventeens are announced on Tuesday. The iPhone sixteens
are going to drop. And the iPhone sixteen family is
a very impressive phone. I'm talking me on it right now,
and that's still going to feel like a major upgrade
from what you've got.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
Yeah, I mean, what's the price for the seventeen expected?

Speaker 2 (05:57):
We don't know. We don't know. There's rumors out there,
but I don't want to speculate. It'll probably be on par,
if not a tad higher because of the tariffs and
all that than what we saw last year. But we'll
we'll see see. Yeah, we don't know about stuff like that.
That's also people are asking me about the battery life
on the iPhone Eric. It's so thin. It's rumored to
be a lot less than like the iPhone seventeen Pro,

(06:17):
which makes sense if it's that much thinner, but until
I review it. I'm going to reserve judgment.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah, think of we'll get it right eventually for the
price tag. Think in terms of mortgage payment. Yeah right,
if you can about mortgage payment.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
But the camera's worth it for the soelthiast right, Mark,
ye always.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Yeah, you brought up a good point. Yeah, thank you.
Just before I let you go. Yeah, there's a twenty
four megapixel front facing camera for self instead of its
twelve megapixel. So I didn't even mention that, Thanks Martin.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
Apparently that's a good thing.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
Wow, that's it?

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Or not or not?

Speaker 4 (06:51):
Maybe you don't want all that detail.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
I hear you.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Mark for radio is what they say, right, Safe travels.
Thanks for talking. We'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
