Speaker 1 (00:00):
You're listening to later with Moe Kelly on demand from
KFI AM six forty.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
I was one of the early adopters of cutting the cord,
in other words, getting rid of cable, getting rid of satellite,
and then going out on this journey called streaming many many,
many years ago. It was a wild wild West, and
at the time, not only was it a better option,
it was a much more economical option. I could get

(00:27):
the channels that I wanted to see for pennies on
the dollar and not pay the one hundred and fifty
dollars a month that I was paying at that time
for Direct TV. I was paying then for Sling TV,
which was forty dollars a month for as many channels
as I wanted.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
DVR it was. It wasn't even close. It was. It
was a bargain by all means.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
And then you had different companies start their own streaming services,
like an HBO Max, like a Hulu, like a Disney Plus,
but they were pretty economic priced. Disney I think was
maybe five ninety nine a month it started. Apple TV
was five ninety nine. Netflix in the beginning it's like

(01:10):
maybe eleven ninety nine when they were started their streaming,
and now all of them have at least doubled at
least and they're also now combining in these bundles where
it seems like, okay, where you're just streaming cable, you're
not hooking up an actual coaxle cable to a box
in your TV. You're just getting it, you know, via

(01:32):
the Internet. It's adding up to just about the same thing.
Because they're raising the prices sometimes twice a year.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
I wouldn't call it greed if only because these streaming
services by and large were not making money early on
it was an incorrect price point, or they were spending
too much money on delivering new content. And I still
haven't figured out the whole Netflix model given how much
money they spent on these new TV shows that you

(02:03):
know and movies which are Netflix productions. Disney has announced
that it's hiking its streaming prices again for Hulu, Disney Plus,
and ESPN Plus starting in mid October. As in about
two months from now, most plans for Disney Plus, Hulu,
and ESPN Plus will increase by one to two dollars

(02:26):
per month, while the most expensive plans for Hulu, which
include live TV, will cost six dollars more a month.
The company said Disney Plus Basic and Premium will go
up two dollars and be priced at nine ninety nine
and fifteen ninety nine, respectively. Remember when I said Disney

(02:47):
Original was five ninety nine if you got in at
the very beginning like I did, and bought it for
years like averaged out to five ninety nine. Well now
it's up to fifteen ninety nine and we're only maybe
three or four years in. Hulu with Ads will now
cost nine to ninety nine a month with ads. Remember,

(03:08):
the whole idea of having ads was so the Hohope
Board of having ads supposed to get a disc cap.
You're paying money to watch ads. That's not how it's
supposed to work. Your subscription price was supposed to be
how you would be able to avoid ads. And they said, well,

(03:30):
we're going to charge you a subscription and show you
ads and jack up the price on you. So Hulu
with Ads will cost nine ninety nine monthly, up from
seven ninety nine. Hulu without ads, Hulu just Hulu will
cost eighteen ninety nine a month, up a dollar. ESPN

(03:54):
Plus with Ads will cost eleven ninety nine a month
up from ten ninety nine.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Damn, damn, damn.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
There's one more show I want to see on Hulu
and it's got to go. It has to go. Espn Plus.
I do not have Disney Plus. There's enough that's gonna
keep me around for a while, but I cannot pay
eighteen Well, I can afford, but I refuse to pay
eighteen ninety nine for Hulu just so I can watch

(04:29):
something without ads. And I'm not gonna pay nine ninety
nine to watch something with ads not on Hulu.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
No, there's not enough there.

Speaker 5 (04:36):
Now see, I just got an offer because of my
long standing subscription with Disney Plus, and I just got
their new bundle, which is Disney Plus, Hulu and Max
without ads, and it was a significant discount for all

(04:57):
three at the highest tier without ads, I now only
pay twenty nine ninety nine between the three. I was
playing closer to thirty something, so for me that this
new bundle for me is a cost saving measure.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
Until they raise the price of the bundle next.

Speaker 5 (05:15):
Now when they raised if they raised the price of
this bundle without the ads, and they're going to continue
to add because with Hulu, the old man is coming back.
I love this most recent season of Hit Monkey, Hulus
starting to bring back some stuff that's worth watching without
ads because I hate ads.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
Here's going to do it.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Here's the thing that Netflix does well and Disney does well.
They stagger their new programming, where you know, you're getting
something that you that you want to see, that's new
and exclusive each and every month. Yes, each and every month.
You don't get that with Max. I'm sorry. They may
have new offerings, but it Yes, no, Max is absolutely lagging.

Speaker 5 (06:00):
But but but uh, the overall price of this has
reduced the cost of Max and they're actually starting to
add more things now. I don't look at every little
sub channel that MAX has, but they are re adding
a lot of DC content that they took away. They're
bringing a lot of it back, and they're bringing a

(06:22):
lot of things that are interesting to watch. So they're trying.
They're at least trying to make up for the fact
that now they're tacked on to Disney Plus like some
you know, unwanted cousin hanging around.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
I guess we're gonna have to go to Pluto and
TB now because they haven't raised their prices.

Speaker 5 (06:39):
Marc has actually found some good stuff on YouTube for Freeze.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
I don't know. Oh, there's no question. People just have
an earthquake. I felt something. Oh yeah, well we're having
an earthquake right now.

Speaker 6 (06:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
I just felt it and it's still going.

Speaker 7 (06:51):
Yeah, okay, so that's not Oh yeah, that's a good one.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
All right, there we go. Oh yeah, that's definitely a five.
Oh yes, it's still going.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Still we're live, can'f i AM six forty as an
earthquake is transpiring live on air.

Speaker 7 (07:06):
It's still going. We are rocking and rolling. That's something.
I'm gonna see what we can find.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
Okay, switch gears and find out where that earthquake was.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
It's still going.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
This has to be one of the longest earthquakes I've
ever experienced, just in terms of duration.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
No, nothing's fallen yet, and it is it's considerable that
that was a pretty long one. So let's find out
where that earthquake was. I know, we get on Twitter
something like an earthquake bot should have that information. We've
just tuned into CAFI AM six forty. We just had
I would say, a significant earthquake that we all felt

(07:51):
in the studio. So if you're wondering, was there an
earthquake in southern California, most definitely, and we are now
efforting try for five points.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
Right now, it's saying it's five point six. Do we
have a tentative epicenter.

Speaker 5 (08:06):
Right now it's saying twenty one miles from Bakersfield?

Speaker 2 (08:10):
Okay, So five point six tentatively how far from Bakersfield?

Speaker 3 (08:17):
Twenty one miles from Bankers from Bakersfield? Okay.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
So if you're just tuning in, yes, we are on
the earthquake. We're getting the preliminary reading of five point six.
And if you listen to later with Mo Kelly, we
kid about Hey, if it's not at least a five,
we're not going to talk about it.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
Well, that was a five plus five point six.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
And I said it even before we even knew what
the caliber or you know, the strength of the earthquake.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
Five point six is considerable.

Speaker 5 (08:48):
Yeah, no, if we felt it the way we just did,
because we're all sitting here looking at each other and
this building has been shaken, I mean, I still feel
like we're filling some aftershocks.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
This was impactful.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
We probably will feel some after show, if only because
a five point six earthquake. That means you might feel
some four point after shocks and you know the next
few minutes, even a few hours.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
So if you're just tuning in, yes we felt the earthquake.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
Yes we are on it, and as we get more information,
we'll keep giving that to you.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
We're not even going to break.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
So we're gonna stay right here on this and see
if we can get more information about the earthquake, if
there was any damage.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
In fact, let's open up the phones.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
Let's open up the phones and let's hear from listeners
and find out what you might have felt with the earthquake.
Give us a call at eight hundred five to zero
one KFI. If you felt the earthquake and want to
give us your account of what you felt or what
you saw any type of damage you noticed, give us

(09:52):
a call at eight hundred five to zero one KFI
eight hundred five to zero one five three four. If
you felt the earthquake, which right now is measured at
five point six that's the preliminary estimate on the Richter
scale five point six, not far from Bakersfield, give us

(10:13):
a call at eight hundred five two zero one KFI
eight hundred five two zero one five three four and
mark let me ask you is someone who's not a
La native, someone who may not be accustomed to feeling
earthquakes with any regularity. What was going through your mind?

Speaker 7 (10:34):
Well, at first I wasn't sure it was a quake,
but then it lasted long enough and I'm seeing right
now here we go. Here's something from the USGS, the
US Geological Survey, five point seven, nine kilometers west of Metler, California.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
Okay, so it was upgrade to five point seven. So
that's even more significant. So give us a call right
now at eight hundred five two zero ONEKFI eight hundred
five two zero one five three four. We want to
hear from you. If you felt the quake, would have
to say, is pretty significant. Five point seven just outside

(11:09):
of you, said Mettler. Yes, which is not far from Bakersfield.
If you felt something, if you saw something, if you
know something, give us a call it eight hundred and
five to two zero one five three four. And just
to back up, we were talking about Disney and streaming,
and it felt like if you've ever been in KFI studios,

(11:31):
it felt like someone was running down the hall, which
has been known to happen, and you can feel the
vibration of someone running down the hall, and then I stopped.
I said, wait a minute, that feels more like an earthquake.
And then as I was thinking and speaking about it
out loud, I realize that is an earthquake. And it

(11:52):
kept going and it kept going, and then as I
was asking, is that an earthquake, and then it started
rolling some more, and I was talking to Elmar and say, yeah,
that's an earthquake. And then we looked at Mark. You said, yeah,
that is an earthquake. And then there was another role
of the earthquake, and we just kept on going. So
give us a call at eight hundred five to zero

(12:13):
one KFI eight hundred five to zero one five three four,
and we're gonna get you on hold, and then we're
going to hear from you and find out what you felt,
what you experienced, and what you know.

Speaker 4 (12:29):
Now.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
I know that for a lot of people, if you're
like me, if you lived in California for all your life,
the idea of an earthquake may not be.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
Unsettling. But if you haven't lived here.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Your whole life, like Elma, I don't know how much
time have you spent in California. I've been here for
five years, and I've definitely felt earthquakes here and there,
but this is the biggest I've ever felt in the
longest time. Yes, I think that's one of the longest
I've ever felt because I felt it continuously. Now I've
heard I felt a bigger jolt, But as far as

(13:04):
duration goes, that was.

Speaker 3 (13:05):
The longest quake.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
I don't know how long it was, but it felt
like at least thirty seconds, and thirty seconds is a
long time long when it comes yeah, when it comes
to earthquakes. I haven't personally felt any aftershocks since then,
but I definitely know that that was pretty substantial and
that was pretty serious. We don't know of any type
of damage. Hopefully there are no injuries. But when the

(13:30):
preliminary estimates are five point seven, that's a sizable quake.
And if you know anything about the Richter scale, as
you go up, it's exponential. It's not like five point
seven is just a little bit stronger than a five
point zero. No, it's exponentially more powerful than a five
point zero. And for all the joking we have, like, hey,
we don't get out of bed for anything less than
a five, well, this was much more than a five.

Speaker 7 (13:51):
Yeah, this one will get your attention. It started off
as a little rumble and then it got a little
bit concerning. So I'm not seeing any reports of major
damage yet from anybody, but we'll have more information, hopefully
in nine thirty.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Well maybe it was from what I hear what you
told of Mark, you was more in a remote area.

Speaker 7 (14:12):
I think, I said Mettler, is that I'm looking that
up right now because I keep refreshing quick Twitter.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
Yeah, that's what I think.

Speaker 2 (14:22):
I'm guessing here because we don't know, and unfortunately we
have to speculate. It feels like it was in a
more remote area than an urban area, which may have
changed the whole equation if that were the case. But
this is where social media is very important because you
can get some information. You know, you have to vet it,
but you can get information quicker than you would if

(14:45):
you're waiting for some traditional news outlets. But KFI is
staying on it and Twitter is going crazy right now.
As far as feeling the earthquake, yeah.

Speaker 7 (14:55):
We're still at the stage where information is just shaking out.
So there's a lot of different things coming in and
we're gonna have to do a little fact checking.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
There are some emergency alerts which I've seen have been
posted on social media from the USGS. As far as
they're categorizing it as a severe earthquake, that's their categorization,
that's not ours. That's their terminology. Categorized as severe and advised.

(15:24):
As far as using good earthquake sense, as far as
protecting oneself, looks like the.

Speaker 7 (15:30):
USGS sent out a shake an emergency alert telling people
to drop cover and hold on and protect yourself.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
Yes, I just did see that myself. Let's go to
Renee in Downey. Let's bring up Renee online one please,
Renee are you there?

Speaker 6 (15:50):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (15:50):
Yes, definitely tell me what you felt, tell me what
you experienced.

Speaker 8 (15:55):
Okay, Well, I was trying to get the tickets, so
I was just buzzing the phone, rained down for a moment,
and suddenly I felt this role. So yeah, it was. Yeah,
I know I heard my just another room. Yeah, I'm
starting to slip from my sandals and my pinished shoes.
But yes, it was definitely. You know, no shaker.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
Do you have any pets and if so, did they
respond in any way?

Speaker 8 (16:23):
Yes, my pet kind of got away from me because
you know, if I'm dialing. I kind of moved him
away with on the bed and he kind of went
to the side of the house.

Speaker 9 (16:32):
For a moment.

Speaker 8 (16:33):
So right now I don't know where he is at,
but yeah, I'm calling. Yeah, there he is, he's under
the bed.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Well, I'm glad that you are. I'm sorry, go ahead.

Speaker 8 (16:44):
Yeah, his name is mister T. Yes, and yes, he
definitely looked at me right now, like what's going on.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
Well, I'm glad that everyone is safe at your house.
I haven't even had a chance to check my house
and my wife and my pets, so I definitely stand renate.

Speaker 3 (17:01):
Thank you for calling in tonight'd be safe.

Speaker 8 (17:02):
Okay, thank you as well.

Speaker 10 (17:05):
MO.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
And yeah, let's go to Uncle Roger in Santa Monica.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Uncle Roger, Roger.

Speaker 10 (17:15):
There, Hey, it's Uncle Roger.

Speaker 11 (17:18):
I'm in Santa Monica, California, and I'm sitting in my
car and uh, the car begins to sway from left
to right, and for a moment I thought it was
a truck going by, but I didn't see anything, and
then I thought the most logical thing, well, it's just
probably my imagination. And then it just kept going and
going and my car was on so thinking the next thing,

(17:42):
I thought, well, something must be wrong.

Speaker 12 (17:44):
In my car.

Speaker 10 (17:44):
Better go get it checked tomorrow morning.

Speaker 9 (17:47):
Were you ever and then, uh.

Speaker 2 (17:49):
Were you ever fearful? You just thought something was wrong,
but not that you were in danger.

Speaker 11 (17:55):
No, I just saw I thought it was either a
truck going by or something was wrong with my car.
But it didn't feel It wasn't that crazy. It was
just a definitely a swaying motion from.

Speaker 12 (18:07):
Left to right.

Speaker 11 (18:09):
But it did go on for a little while, for
several seconds. Yeah, I just sway.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
I think all of us so far, the people I've
talked to in the studio and outside, have had a
similar experience where the duration of the quake was pretty long,
pretty long, and I think that's been consistent. Well, Roger,
thank you for calling in. Be safe out there. Thank
you call us back in sometime. Let's go to Kirk
in Huntington Beach get a wide swath of how people

(18:38):
felt this cake, this quake. Kirk, tell me what was
your experience.

Speaker 10 (18:43):
Well, I got an alert on the phone about three
minutes ago saying a quake was coming, and about five
seconds after that I started feeling a swinging, the swaying
here in Huntington Beach lasted at least ten and I'm
thinking maybe twelve seconds with the leers starting to sway.
And it was a very very long quake, not very harsh,

(19:05):
but very long.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
Kirk, you said you got a notification on your phone.
What app were you using?

Speaker 10 (19:12):
I was using the iHeartRadio app and listening to a
program called Later with Moto.

Speaker 3 (19:19):
Well done, well done? Now for that. Did you have
to leave your location on your phone on?

Speaker 10 (19:29):
I think I have my location on was just for
such emergencies as this?

Speaker 2 (19:34):
You were at home, so let me ask you as well,
did you have any pets or could you hear pets
in a neighborhood?

Speaker 3 (19:40):
Responding, well, we.

Speaker 10 (19:42):
Don't have any pets, and I couldn't hear anything here.
I'm pretty well isolated with various walls around me.

Speaker 2 (19:51):
You didn't hear from any neighbors in or anything even
after the quake, people outside, concern, any.

Speaker 10 (19:57):
Sirens, nothing like that at all.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
Okay, that's actually good news then, all right, Kurt, thank
you for.

Speaker 10 (20:03):
Joining, Thank you so much for your great program.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
Thank you, sir. All right, be safe. Let's go to
Dave and Bakersfield.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
Dave, you probably from what I can read closest to
what has been listed as the epicenter.

Speaker 3 (20:16):
So I'm curious to hear what you experienced.

Speaker 9 (20:20):
Yeah, good evening, mo I am. I'm actually in right
in downtown Bakersfield on California and Union, and it's it
actually came on really quick. I got the alert on
my phone and as soon as I got the alert,

(20:40):
I felt the quake and it was a strong one
and it came in rolling. I've been through from the
seventy two to the Northridge, and it wasn't violent here
at all. It wasn't like the seventies, like the like
the film are or like the Northward. Yeah, and those
were definitely violent. It wasn't violent here at all. Definitely

(21:04):
a rolling, caking and long, and you know, I just
I got my shoes on and got up and you know,
make sure everything was okay. The area is there's a
number of of homeless people out here. They got out
of their shelters and and you know, walked around and

(21:27):
and everybody's okay. You know, couldn't go damage, No.

Speaker 3 (21:31):
Sirens, no nothing, could you tell if anyone lost any power?

Speaker 9 (21:36):
You know what, I'm standing outside right now. All lights
are on. That's That's the main thing I was looking at.

Speaker 3 (21:44):
I could see.

Speaker 9 (21:44):
Power all the way around where I'm at, and I'm
in downtown. I can see power, you know, three hundred
and sixty degrees around me.

Speaker 3 (21:52):
Well, it's good to know that.

Speaker 9 (21:53):
I can hear some sirens. I could hear some sirens,
and that's you know. There's some people walking around with flashlights,
but cars are driving and everything seems normal. No trees,
definitely definitely strong.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
No trees tumbled, no.

Speaker 9 (22:11):
Trees, no, no water lines, you know, it's that was
the main thing I came out to make sure that
you know, everything's you know, I don't I don't hear
in this in this particular property, I don't have the
gas shut off, uh set up and uh where my
property in La you know I have that where the

(22:31):
you know, a gas will shut off. There is some
fire engines coming by now, but I don't know where
they're going to.

Speaker 4 (22:42):
But everything.

Speaker 9 (22:45):
Let's see they're actually they're coming down right here, right
right down, They're coming they're coming right here. So they're
turning down my street. Let's see what's going on down here.

Speaker 3 (22:54):
And more than one Injine.

Speaker 9 (22:56):
Let me walk, let me walk over there and see,
I'm gonna maybe get some good news here.

Speaker 3 (23:00):
Okay, go ahead, We'll stay with you. About how far
away are you from the fire engine.

Speaker 9 (23:06):
They're right down the street.

Speaker 3 (23:09):
Let me walk.

Speaker 9 (23:09):
I'm gonna walk over there, like three houses down. Uh,
let's see here, they're coming down the big fire engine
hooking ladder. I could smell no, no paramedics, but I
could smell fire. Yeah, I could definitely smell something. So

(23:37):
uh yeah, it looks like they're oh yeah, they're coming
out with something. It looks like there's something on fire.
I don't want to get too close, but they're coming
out with their hoses. Yeah, something caught on fire on
this particular house. I can't tell you what it is,
but they're they're all coming out with their hoses and
uh hey, dave apparatus they have.

Speaker 3 (24:00):
Yeah, how about this.

Speaker 9 (24:00):
There's something happening. I don't want to tell you.

Speaker 3 (24:04):
That's okay.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
I'm going to put you on hold and see if
you get some more information. We got to go to
a break and then we'll come back to you on
the other side. If you just tuning in, it's later
with mo Kelly. We're changing to earthquake coverage. If you
don't know. A magnitude five point seven earthquake hit about
ten miles from Bakersfield tonight at about nine nine pm.
And the earthquake occurred thirteen miles from Lamont, California, if

(24:27):
you know that, nineteen miles from Rosedale and twenty two
miles from Oildale. And that's what we know at this moment.
There have been no reports from what we've seen of
injuries or damage, but Dave's on the phone with us
and he's holding as there's a report of at least
one fire which is in progress where he is. We'll

(24:50):
get more information about that. This is KFI AM six
forty Live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. We will continue
our earthquake coverage in just a moment.

Speaker 1 (24:58):
You're listening to Later with Moe Kelly on demand from
KFI AM six forty.

Speaker 3 (25:06):
Six forty. It's Later with mo Kelly.

Speaker 2 (25:08):
We're continuing our earthquake coverage if you are just tuning in.
What originally was reported as a five point seven magnitude
earthquake has been downgraded to a five point three earthquake,
and this is the latest information, and it's struck near
Bakersfield at nine to nine pm, about ten miles from Bakersfield.

(25:31):
This is according to the USGS, and it was also
followed by mark to your point a four point five
magnitude aftershock. We knew we were going to feel some aftershocks.
That one was four point five and the USGS said
the quake was felt across the La Basin as well
as Santa Maria, Bakersfield and Fresno hours away. And you

(25:54):
wouldn't know this, but we have a KFI text thread
going on with a lot of the hosts who are
away in about what they felt. Nick Poliochini said that
he felt it in Anaheim at a d twenty three
xpo event at the Anaheim Packing District in downtown Anaheim and.

Speaker 3 (26:11):
Said it was pretty solid.

Speaker 2 (26:13):
Fork reporter Neil Sophagra said he felt it in Silver Lake,
and a producer Keenna said she felt it in Fullerton.
Producer Kayla Kayla Austin says that she felt nothing in
Miracle Mile. We don't believe her, and Shannon Farrin of
Gary and Shannon says that was nothing. She felt it,

(26:36):
but she didn't think it was all that big a deal.
Of course, that's Shannon Farrin, So that gives you just
a little bit of a sampling of what KFI hosts
around southern California felt. Now we're going to go back
to the phones and hear from you. Let's go to Charlotte,
who is calling in from Santa Barbara. Charlotte, good evening.
What did you feel? What did you experience?

Speaker 13 (26:58):
Well, it was pretty much like everybody else was saying.
I happened to be sitting in my truck listening to
the Mo Kelly Show and it started. It felt like
somebody was shaking my car.

Speaker 12 (27:11):
From the back.

Speaker 13 (27:13):
And then I was thinking, well, that's not possible. Nobody's around,
and then I realized it was an earthquake. And for me,
you know, I've lived through a lot of earthquakes, thank God,
but it's always the duration that's the scary part, because
you don't know if it's going to go on and
on or escalade or that kind of thing. So that

(27:36):
was that was hard to go on forever.

Speaker 2 (27:38):
Charlotte, you made a great point because that was the
feeling of us in the studio. We were talking each other.
We've after we realized it was an earthquake, we didn't
know which way was going to go. We didn't know
if it was going to get or become more severe
or what, and so that was our concern. And I
was kind of narrating as it was happening. Now, if

(27:59):
you know radio, there's a delay, so what I'm saying
is happening is not going to get to a listener
for another thirty forty seconds. So you were feeling it
and listening to the radio. And I was probably reacting
after you were, but you were just hearing the.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
Delay of the audio.

Speaker 2 (28:15):
But yeah, we were experiencing the same emotions at the
same time.

Speaker 13 (28:20):
Yeah, for sure. And I was surprised because you guys
are so far south and I'm I'm just thinking, oh
my god, is this over the whole state?

Speaker 4 (28:31):
You know?

Speaker 13 (28:32):
You know, so that was scary, very scary.

Speaker 3 (28:34):
Well, at least from what we've seen.

Speaker 2 (28:36):
We have not had any published reports of injuries or damage,
but we're staying on this to make sure. Charlotte, thank
you for calling in tonight, and I'm glad that you're safe.

Speaker 13 (28:47):
Thank y'all. I'm glad you're safe too.

Speaker 2 (28:50):
Let's go to Stephen in Santa Monica. Stephen, good evening.
I hope you are safe as well. Yeah, I'm Jeeves,
tell us what.

Speaker 14 (28:58):
Happened was just sitting in my car. Came down the
Santa Monel for a bike ride, and I was just
sitting in the car, listening to your station, and the
cars starts shaking, the crosstart going left to right. Like
she just said, someone was shaking the car from the back.
But nobody's here. I knew him exactly what it was.
I didn't even have to wonder about it.

Speaker 2 (29:15):
Have you ever experienced an earthquake in a car before?
I haven't, so I don't have that type of reference point.
I've always been in a house or a building.

Speaker 14 (29:25):
Yes, I was at a stop, at a stop like
a let's call it a section when you shop like over.

Speaker 4 (29:32):
Ha.

Speaker 9 (29:33):
Happened right at that time.

Speaker 14 (29:34):
While I was waiting for the light to change in
my car was swinging and it was, you know, back
and forth, just for a few months, but.

Speaker 9 (29:39):
This was about a year ago.

Speaker 2 (29:40):
Were you ever concerned tonight that it may turn into
something much more dangerous?

Speaker 9 (29:46):
No, I didn't know. I wasn't there.

Speaker 3 (29:48):
Okay, Okay, well, Steve, thank you for calling in tonight.

Speaker 9 (29:52):
Okay, thank you.

Speaker 2 (29:53):
Let's go to Dana and Chino Hills. Dana, good, evening.
How are you tonight? All things considered.

Speaker 15 (30:00):
Evening?

Speaker 3 (30:02):
So what happened?

Speaker 13 (30:03):
How ay?

Speaker 6 (30:04):
And I was sitting in my bed and my eighty
six year old father had just came in the garage
from walking, and I'm like, my bed was.

Speaker 4 (30:12):
Like totally shaking.

Speaker 6 (30:13):
It was like a roll kind of And I said,
do you feel that? And he's like staring at me
saying no, I didn't feel it. I'm like, yeah, look
at my bed and my cats just limped like running
away from me. But yeah, I mean I'm a hundred
and forty four miles away from the quake and I
felt it, So it was a good one.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
Did it last a long time for you as other
people have seen?

Speaker 15 (30:39):
No, No it did not.

Speaker 6 (30:41):
It lasted maybe it less than a minute. Let's in
a minute here in cheat health.

Speaker 3 (30:47):
And you did not feel any aftershocks since as well?

Speaker 6 (30:50):
I didn't feel an AFTRA shocks.

Speaker 16 (30:52):
No.

Speaker 6 (30:53):
The first thing I do is I run out to
the backyard and look at my pool and if my
pool's shaken, then I know, yeah, it's in my pool.
The pool water was rolling up and down, and I
said yeah, and then my dad, because my dad didn't
believe me, He's like, there wasn't an earthquake. And I'm like,
let's go look at the pool. Looked at the pool.
He's like, oh, yeah, you're right. Yeah, those an earthquakes.

Speaker 15 (31:13):
Water slashing, water slashing.

Speaker 6 (31:17):
And he said, oh yeah, you're right. I said, see,
you're not always right, Dad.

Speaker 2 (31:22):
Well, Dana, thank you for calling in. I'm glad that
you and Dad are safe this evening.

Speaker 6 (31:28):
And I want to let you know that the first
thing I did when I felled the earthquake was I
want on iHeart, and I said they're gonna know immediately.
So thank you guys very much.

Speaker 3 (31:38):
Absolutely, you're most welcome. Be safe tonight.

Speaker 6 (31:41):
All right, have a great night, be safe.

Speaker 2 (31:44):
Let's talk to Mitch and Palace Verdes the States. Mitch,
how are you doing tonight?

Speaker 12 (31:49):
So good bo? How about your guy?

Speaker 2 (31:51):
You know what would kind of surprise? You think you're
going to do one thing this evening, and all of
a sudden, because of circumstances, it goes in a completely
different direction. I'm glad that we're safe here. Is everyone
safe where you are?

Speaker 12 (32:04):
Yes, everybody's safe here as far as I know. To me,
it was I lived kind of on top of a hill.
Here in Palifornia's space, and it was I had just
sat on the edge of bed and it started rolling.
I didn't hear any noise, you know, thumbs are sound,
but it was more rolling and it lasted for about
i'd say thirty forty seconds and then it quit.

Speaker 2 (32:27):
For us here in the studio, it took us a
moment or two to really realize whether it was an
earthquake or something else.

Speaker 3 (32:34):
For you, did you know immediately?

Speaker 17 (32:37):
Yeah, I kind of did.

Speaker 12 (32:38):
I don't know why, but I just thought this is
a normal.

Speaker 2 (32:44):
I have to ask you, just like I would ask
anyone else. Did the animals, pets in your neighborhood respond?
Did you have any type of warning from them?

Speaker 12 (32:52):
No note at all. I've been listening and some people
said they got a warning on their phone, and I
have warning to set up, but I didn't at anything.
But it felt it was as strong when I started
as when it ended.

Speaker 3 (33:05):
Mm hm. That was the same as well, paper off.

Speaker 12 (33:08):
Because kept rolling and rolling and then it stopped.

Speaker 2 (33:11):
Mm. Now, I wonder are you close to the issues
they've had in Palace Vari's estates that's.

Speaker 3 (33:17):
Been in the news. It's of late.

Speaker 14 (33:22):
Five miles.

Speaker 2 (33:22):
Okay, I wondered if that might have exacerbated it it
as well given this earthquake, but that's something we'll find out.

Speaker 4 (33:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 12 (33:31):
Yeah, we're surrounded by cliffs, so I eat all the sides,
so you know, there might have been a little south.

Speaker 3 (33:38):
Well, Mitch, thank you for calling it. And I'm glad
that you're okay.

Speaker 9 (33:42):
Thank you, Bob.

Speaker 12 (33:42):
I'm glad everybody else does too.

Speaker 3 (33:44):
Thank you.

Speaker 2 (33:45):
Let's go to Dean in Aliso Viejo. Dean, good evening,
and I hope you're well where you are.

Speaker 4 (33:51):
Hey, can you hear me?

Speaker 3 (33:53):
Yes? We can perfect.

Speaker 4 (33:55):
Yeah. So I was at my desk in a five
story office building. I was on the third floor, and
I was getting ready to wrap up, and I was
looking at my phone and I can't remember if I
got an alert or if the app that alerted me
just took over my screen. And it was a really

(34:18):
well formatted alert player. It stated that there was an earthquake.
It gave you a map with the diameter of the
earthquake on the map, and it even showed where I
was at, and I thought, this is really this is
pretty cool. And then and then it read that there

(34:41):
could be some aftershocks and as soon as I read
that there could be some aftershocks. I felt the building
kind of wave, kind of like if you're on a
fishing boat for about five seconds, and it was kind
of nauseating, and I was like, WHOA, that was weird.
That was really cool that I got alerted to it,
and then five seconds later I feel it. So I

(35:03):
called my wife and she said, nope, I didn't feel anything.
And then I talked to the cleaning people there and
they said, no, I didn't feel anything, but I definitely
felt it and it was it felt pretty significant.

Speaker 2 (35:13):
Hey, Dean, let me ask you, just from a technological standpoint.
You got the alert, you got the full warning. Did
it help you in any way? Could you emotionally prepare?
Did it make any difference?

Speaker 4 (35:24):
You know, I'm still processing, but definitely made me aware.
I don't know that I could have done anything if
it was more significant, but I was at least made aware.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
Well, at least you got to take what we can
get these days, and sometimes just having that little bit
of awareness may make the difference next time. Dean, thank
you for calling in tonight, and I'm glad that you
are safe as well.

Speaker 4 (35:51):
They have a good night.

Speaker 2 (35:52):
Let's go to Christine and Pomona. Christine, tell me about
what happened for you this evening.

Speaker 6 (36:00):
Well, I was sitting at my desk listening to you
and had my computer on and I felt it. I
recognized it immediately. I'm a native Californian, so I've been
through a lot of them.

Speaker 15 (36:12):
And the next thing that came.

Speaker 6 (36:14):
To me is, I thought this earthquake as smooth as butter.
It's just I enjoyed it. I just thought, wow, there
was no bumping or you know, just smooth like butter.
And it just finally tapered off and didn't hear anything
in the neighborhood. I usually wait to hear if the

(36:36):
dogs howl, but it was nothing. But you know, they
don't frighten me, never have. Maybe it's because I'm a native,
but they always remind me that we're not in control.

Speaker 3 (36:48):
Yes, and I think you as well.

Speaker 2 (36:51):
Your experience was similar to ours, and that's why for
me being on air, my thought obviously was not about
an earthquake. It took me a moment or two to
real and recognized it was an actual earthquake because it
was smooth, there was no jolt. It was like a
rumbling but it was consistent. That's why I thought it
was someone running down the hall. It was almost rhythmical,

(37:12):
where it wasn't a sudden, it wasn't herky jerky. So
for me, it's like, I'm a native Californian like you.
So I've been through, i don't know, hundreds and hundreds
of earthquakes. You have a general understand of how they
usually go, and this was different one because it was
very long and it wasn't violent, thank goodness, but it

(37:32):
was long.

Speaker 3 (37:33):
And you could feel it.

Speaker 6 (37:34):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I did start to wonder, Okay, what's next,
you know, and then it just went away. But I
just relaxed and with the flow. I guess I don't
know what i'd do if it really got bad, but
I've never really had one, you know, happened in that
one and that took the freeway.

Speaker 3 (37:54):
Down in Northridge.

Speaker 6 (37:56):
I was, yeah, I slept through that one, so I
don't know if it would have scared me or not.

Speaker 2 (38:01):
How did you sleep through that one, Christine? How did
you sleep through north Ridge? How is that possible?

Speaker 12 (38:08):
Well?

Speaker 6 (38:08):
I was maybe it was the distance from it. But
you know what's funny is I grew up in San
Dimas and I worked in a beauty shop there for years,
and I had a customer and that came from Lyon
Country area, and I thought, oh, Leslie won't make it

(38:28):
today because of the earthquakes. The freeway was down right right.
Well did she walked in the shop right on time?
And I looked at her. She went around the mountain
to get to her haircut. Well, I just thought that
was the funniest thing, what a woman will go through
to get her haircut.

Speaker 2 (38:48):
Well, Christine, all I can say is you missed a
big one in north Ridge, but you didn't miss this one.
I am glad that it was just smooth as butter
and no one was harmed and there was no damage around.

Speaker 3 (39:00):
Thank you for calling in tonight.

Speaker 6 (39:02):
Okay, thank you, Mom.

Speaker 3 (39:04):
Have a good evening.

Speaker 2 (39:05):
Let's go to a Francine in Ventura Franccene. From what
I understand, you did get an alert. How much time
or notice did you get?

Speaker 15 (39:16):
I tell an alert.

Speaker 16 (39:18):
I can see like a second before it happened, as
Toul was speaking, and all of a sudden my.

Speaker 6 (39:26):
Phone buzz buzz buzz, and.

Speaker 16 (39:28):
I said, there's alert an earthquake. You know, get under
a chair, drop roll and it. You know, he gave
you the instructions, but what I felt was a real role,
a role and then a jolt and it really oh
I felt, you know, that was a jolt. And I

(39:50):
that's when I really got concerned. The role didn't bother me,
but a jolt. I'm saying, oh, no, north Ridge, not again.
And then it just smoothed and off and off it went.

Speaker 14 (40:05):
That was it.

Speaker 16 (40:06):
But there was a jolt, and I did get Like
I said, I did get the alert because Tula was
speaking and it was annoying me that it was getting
And then I looked at the phone and I said
that there was an earthquake coming. And the second I
read it, I started to heal it.

Speaker 3 (40:24):
Let me let me ask you this. So you were
listening to the show by the iHeartRadio app. Is that correct?

Speaker 16 (40:29):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (40:30):
And you got the alert through the iHeartRadio app?

Speaker 8 (40:33):
Yes, okay, I did.

Speaker 16 (40:36):
And it was it was wisconstant, and it was loud.
It was much louder than my phone usually will will
give me any kind of signal, but it was loud
and it caught my attention because it interrupted Touala when
he was speaking. I know, yes, and as far as

(41:00):
animals go, I have a chat. He was on the chair. Nothing,
didn't even raise his head, nothing, just lay there, not
a move out of them.

Speaker 3 (41:14):
Nothing, cool as a cucumber.

Speaker 16 (41:17):
I could not believe it.

Speaker 8 (41:19):
Not the thing.

Speaker 16 (41:19):
I said, Oh, you're going to be a great help.

Speaker 4 (41:22):
You know.

Speaker 2 (41:23):
Well, maybe because your cat understood there was nothing to
worry about.

Speaker 3 (41:26):
I got it under control, you know, just cool.

Speaker 16 (41:29):
Maybe he couldn't. Yeah, this is only a five. Most said,
If is only five, don't worry. I'm not worrying. I'm
just flying here.

Speaker 12 (41:38):
What the heck?

Speaker 2 (41:40):
Well, Francied, I'm glad that everyone is okay where you are.
Thank you for listening. I know that you probably didn't
expect to be on the radio and calling in, but
thank you for calling in.

Speaker 16 (41:51):
Thank you. I just I was just surprised that when
I found out where it was, that we felt it
that hard.

Speaker 2 (41:57):
It seems like just about everyone felt it in southern
California from just my anecdotal look at at texts and
news reports, just about everywhere in southern California it was felt.

Speaker 1 (42:11):
Well.

Speaker 16 (42:12):
I hope everybody is safe, and I hope everybody shape
candy at the center.

Speaker 2 (42:16):
Amen, Okay, we'll talk to him, Francine and call us
again sometime.

Speaker 16 (42:21):
Thank you, Bye bye.

Speaker 2 (42:23):
Let's go to Thomas in Ktown. Thomas, good evening. You
were in your car? Is that correct?

Speaker 4 (42:29):
Hey? Man?

Speaker 9 (42:30):
I loved the program.

Speaker 17 (42:31):
Man, Dad, I'm an uber driver. Just dropped someone off
in Ktown, stopped the light and I could feel the
car rolling. Nobody was around me, And I'm familiar with
that because I also thought the same thing in the
eighty seven.

Speaker 9 (42:48):
Put your narrows quake.

Speaker 3 (42:49):
So yeah, well, let me ask you this.

Speaker 2 (42:52):
You were stopping the light, you could you see the
light in front of you swaying? Could you see any
type of structures moving?

Speaker 4 (42:58):
You know what?

Speaker 17 (42:59):
I didn't look. I was too busy looking around you
to see who was shaking my car?

Speaker 3 (43:04):
Right right? How long did it last for you?

Speaker 4 (43:08):
Yeah?

Speaker 9 (43:08):
Duration, It looked it sounds like it was going on.

Speaker 17 (43:12):
It felt like it was going on forever, maybe thirty
forty seconds.

Speaker 14 (43:16):
But it was good.

Speaker 17 (43:17):
It was a good shake. You know. I think being
in a car makes it even worse because you've got
the suspension and everything. But it was a good, long,
long shake. Nothing really violent, but you knew the call
was shaking. It was more than just the truck passing by.

Speaker 2 (43:31):
Well, I'm glad, as I said to everyone else, that
you're safe and you're able to tell everyone about it
and there's no damage.

Speaker 3 (43:38):
So thank you for calling in tonight.

Speaker 9 (43:39):
Tomas, Hey, my pleasure, take care.

Speaker 2 (43:42):
Be well, let's get in these last calls. Let's go
to Jill and Sherman Oaks. Jill, good evening, tell us
about what happened with you.

Speaker 15 (43:50):
Hi there, Yeah, I'm not too far from the studio.
I was listening or watching television, and all of a
sudden I heard kind of like an automated voice coming
from somewhere that was talking to me. So I grabbed
my phone and it was telling me to drop cover
and hold on or something. So I decided to just
sort of sit down on my couch and see what

(44:10):
would happen next. And then, like everybody else, they started
to feel that rolling motion.

Speaker 3 (44:16):
Was it long in duration?

Speaker 15 (44:18):
It was, yeah, longer than most I would say.

Speaker 2 (44:21):
All right, you seem pretty cool about it. So you
were never concerned at any point?

Speaker 3 (44:25):
Is that right?

Speaker 13 (44:27):
I was.

Speaker 15 (44:28):
There's always a concern. You don't know if you know
it's going to start shaking more violently at any moment,
or if there's going to be an aftershock, but I
just really have a choice. All I could do is
just sit on my couch and kind of cross my fingers.

Speaker 2 (44:41):
Well, we all crossed our fingers, and we all came
out on the other side, hopefully unscathed. We haven't had
any reports of damage, but I'm not going to get
out ahead of that. But hopefully it will turn out
okay for everyone. Jill, thank you for calling in tonight. Sure,
all right, be well, let's go to Ed in Riverside.

(45:04):
Ed tell us about your experience, please.

Speaker 18 (45:07):
Well, I thought i'd call in being in Riverside quite
a good ways the way, but I was listening to you,
and the way you were describing it was just the
same way I was feeling it. And I was in
my car texting in a partner spot and as you
were saying, hey, I feel an earthquake, about two or
three seconds after you said that, I started feeling.

Speaker 13 (45:27):
The rumbling, you know, not rumbling.

Speaker 18 (45:29):
But like one lady said, felt like somebody who was
in the back of my car. And oh, by the way,
before anybody says that, you know this is an earthquake,
weather right.

Speaker 3 (45:40):
Yes it is, Yes it is. We've had a you
know a few of them.

Speaker 2 (45:44):
We don't know if this is the first of many
or the last of many, so we shall see.

Speaker 18 (45:50):
Like you say it was, I just thought i'd give
you a call from Riverside, since quite a ways away
and I still felt it.

Speaker 13 (45:57):
My car was shaken back and forth.

Speaker 3 (45:59):
Hey, Ed, you appreciate you, Thank you for calling.

Speaker 18 (46:01):
Listen, you bet people there, but.

Speaker 3 (46:05):
Let's get in one more gem and Ventura Jim tell
us what happened?

Speaker 10 (46:10):
Hey, Ma, great show.

Speaker 19 (46:11):
I was lying in bed here, just kind of winding down,
and I have my window open, don't have air conditioning,
and Venture County is pretty pretty cool here. But I
heard the dogs neck door making some noise, and then
I got the text from the USCS or whoever. And
then about two seconds later, we felt the earth start

(46:34):
to move. My backgrounds in geology. I worked for a
geotechnical engineering firm, so I could feel the pea waves
come in first like a lady. The couple of callers
before described.

Speaker 2 (46:48):
Did you just go scientific scientific on us?

Speaker 14 (46:52):
I did.

Speaker 3 (46:53):
Okay, we don't know what a P and a S
wave is.

Speaker 19 (46:57):
P is the primary wave, it's more of a rolling wave,
and a's the second man the secondary wave, which.

Speaker 13 (47:03):
Is generally more a little more of a shock.

Speaker 19 (47:05):
Okay, and and so I could distinctly sense those two.
And then it kind of just rumbled on for a
little while. But I was impressed that we got the
GPS or the text message a few seconds before it hit.

Speaker 12 (47:23):
It wasn't enough.

Speaker 19 (47:24):
Time to do much, but it kind of reminds me
of that uh San Andreas movie when Paul Giamati was
trying to you know, warn everybody, warn everybody, and you
know it, we'll make it sure. I don't think we're
gonna ever get ten minutes warning, but something.

Speaker 3 (47:43):
Well, it's better than what it was before.

Speaker 19 (47:46):
Yeah, but but I heard the animals next door and
then got the you know, felt felt the waves, and
I looked at a map and I'm almost due south
of that area as the crow flies.

Speaker 2 (47:58):
Well, Joe, they thank you for that scientific lesson. I
learned about a primary and secondary wave. Did not know
that before. And I appreciate you bringing your expertise to
this as we close out, Oh.

Speaker 3 (48:10):

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
