(00:00):
You're listening to Later with Moe Kellyon demand from KFI AM six forty and
I had been away and I didn'thave a chance to talk with our good
friend and commentator Christopher Woolsey of ChickenSoup for the Soul Entertainment. First,
it's good to see you, myfriend. It's been a while. I've
been on the other side of theworld literally, and I didn't have a
(00:20):
chance to talk to you. Butwhile I was away, there's a point
to this. While I was away, I had the chance to watch a
lot of movies, go to themovies, really disconnect and rejuvenate myself.
Have you had a chance this summerto see anything a little bit? My
son and I went to go seeThelma, which he had gone to Sun
(00:45):
Dance this last January. I wantto say is that it must be nice.
I know, I wish I wasin high school and could go.
Right. He's a film program.I'm like, I've been working in the
entertainment industry for over twenty years.I haven't gone yet. It's so ridiculous.
But he had a great time andhe came home and he was like,
oh, there was this great moviecalled Thelma about an old woman who
(01:07):
gets scammed and then decides she wantsto go get her money back, and
it just came out to theaters andso he was like, oh my gosh,
we have to go see it.It's so good. I loved it.
I thought it was it was reallysweet. I didn't really recognize anyone
in the film. There was acouple of people that I'm like, oh,
yeah, I've seen you before, like Richard Rowntree, Yes, exactly
like Richard rown Tree, Yeah, who's fantastic and everything. And the guy
(01:32):
from Agents of Shields, Clark Grigg, Yes, who's always phenomenal. But
there were a lot of I mean, like Thelma herself. I don't know
where they found this woman, butJune squib Yeah, yeah, she's spectacular.
And it's just it's simple, it'ssweet. There's not a lot of
curves. It's just a really nicecharacter driven movie. But I thought it
(01:53):
had a lot of really interesting thingsto say about the struggle of the elderly,
necessarily just in this country, butjust getting old in general is hard,
and they they really did a goodjob of putting a message into a
movie that didn't necessarily need one.But I thought it was great, And
(02:13):
I ask you that given that we'realways hungering for something, which is I
think we're hungry for something which issubstantive. And the substantive movies, the
ones that may have something meaningful tosay, are not usually highlighted. They
don't do as well in the ina box office sense. So it's good
to hear about they're still making moviesfor the sake of making good movies.
(02:38):
Yes, yeah, absolutely, Andmy son and I constantly talk about that.
We'll watch a movie and it mighthave been fun, but I said,
what did you what did you takeaway from this? And go not
much. Last night I was talkingabout I saw A Quiet Place day one,
and I've seen the first three thethree movie, and I appreciate how
(03:00):
it's relatively simple concept, but it'sgreat storytelling. It's using dramatic pauses and
your own internal fear and silence totell a compelling story, and it's doing
well. It hardens me because Ithink, yes, let's return to those
types of stories totally. And I'ma huge fan of movies exactly what you're
(03:23):
describing. Movies like Jaws, Yes, and Alien. You look at those
scripts, there's not a lot ofdialogue, not a lot of dialogue,
and you're kind of in your ownhead and you don't Jaws an alien very
similar in the respect that you don'tsee the monster much. No, and
it's more just your imagination running wild. Absolutely, and that's so much scarier
(03:46):
than anything else, anything else thatyou had a chance to see, either
with your son or by yourself. We have been watching The Bear because season
three just dropped, and so we'retrying to catch up. I loves the
show. I haven't seen it.It's phenomenal. I'm I'm a huge fan.
I'm a little nervous because the seasonthree reviews had been hit and miss.
(04:11):
Some people were put off there's alot of flashbacks, apparently, and
they felt like that it wasn't movingthe story forward. But I just I
love these characters. I have aquestion, is it in the same universe
as Shameless, or just happens tohave similar actors, just happens to have
similar actors. Okay, it's notnot in the same world, yeah,
but it's just And I worked restaurantfor a long time before I was able
(04:32):
to peel myself out, and soI've been like every time there's a fight
in the kitchen. I'm like,oh, I've been there, I know
what that is. Oh that's real. Yeah, yeah, it's it's and
the performances are through the roof whenyou watch it. There's an episode called
Forks and you will that and FishesThere's there's yeah, these two seminal episodes.
(04:57):
Jamie Lee Curtis comes in as themom and just burns that show to
the ground. She is incredible.Let me digress for a second. I
feel that my sister, she justrecently retired from LAX telling all her business.
She would tell me stories of whatwould happen at LAX which would not
make the news. Sure, soyou have this informed view of stuff going
(05:19):
on and you look at things differently. And I felt and my wife used
to work for this company called EcoLab where they go around and telling these
restaurants, this is what you needto do to get your a get that
stuff off the floor. All theseare potential violations. And I learned from
her. There's certain things that mI learned too much about the restaurant industry,
and it makes it difficult for meto go certain places. I may
(05:41):
see things like red flag you workingin a restaurant, industry. Does it
make it difficult for you to goto restaurants? I don't know if it
makes it difficult, but it doesmake me a little picky. Okay,
I did white tablecloth Italian shout outDelifernio. I was there. I did.
I was really Manhattan Beach il forn Io for twelve years. Wow.
(06:05):
Yeah, so I'm really really pickyabout Italian food. That's no small
potatoes. No, it was.It was intense. It was, but
I learned a ton and I madea lot of amazing friends. And in
fact, I'm having lunch with oneof my regulars tomorrow who he and I
still keep in contact. Was it? See it? It would be hard
(06:26):
for me to work a place andthen go back and just hang out that
place. Yeah, it's I don'tgo to the restaurant that much anymore.
I used to go, I don'tknow, we'd go a couple times a
year, and now we live inThousand Oaks. It's Manhattan Beach, so
it's like, WHOA don't trust todrive? Yeah? We I mean I
didn't when I worked I lived inCulver City. But yeah, so but
(06:47):
we you know, I still keepin touch with a few people that I
just because I worked at for solong. But yeah, I'm really picky
about that. I also think Ihave more grace for servers as long as
I see them actually doing the bestwork they can. I'm also a little
critical of people that I know thataren't doing the best work, just because
(07:08):
I know what good restaurant work lookslike. I'm sorry that you told me
this right now, but I haveto ask you this before we go to
break. We often talk about tippingculture here on the show, and I
don't have a problem with tipping peoplewho are actually working as weight staff or
doing something where they can go aboveand beyond and not say earn that tip,
but do something which is worthy ofrecognizing with the tip. But now
(07:30):
you get to see, you goto these places and restaurants, there's service
fees which are in there which havenothing to do with the employees as far
as I'm concerned. Correct, yougo to a subway or a Donalds and
they have a tip jar out infront. Let me just take a step
back. What do you think ofthe tipping culture in today's world. I'm
of two minds. One is,if somebody does go above and beyond,
I love to be a lavish tipper. I am not wild about the tip
(07:56):
on demand. You know, yougo to turn the screen around. I
mean I was like, for yearsand years and years we would go to
restaurants and if you walked up tothe counter and got your food and left
with it, there was not atip involved. And now there is.
And I'm like, I don't knowwhat to think about that. Oh I
know what to think about it,and I said it many times. Pisses
(08:16):
me, all yeah, yeah,I need to so. But again,
if if there is a service beingprovided and someone is showing me that they
are excellent at what they do,I am all on board with being a
great tipper, and I do.But yeah, and if you're just handing
me my food as a to goorder, what is it that you could
(08:39):
have done to not earn the tipIf you're expecting a tip when I say
you the business expecting a tip becauseyou just handed me some food, what's
the baseline here? No, I'mwith you, Yeah, it's I don't
think it's a great direction. It'ssort of the everyone gets an award,
(09:00):
yeah yeah, participation for trophy.Yeah. I don't know how we got
that, but we went all theway around the bomb. We started off
with movies and we ended up withtipping and participation awards and trophies. When
we come back, let's get intoCrackle and Red Boxer offerings for this week.
We're now officially well into summer. We're on the precipice of the fourth
of July Independence Day weekend, andI know you have some great recommendations for
(09:22):
us, right, Oh yes,we'll get into that. Next. It's
Chris Woolsey Chicken Suit for the SoulEntertainment, joining me in studio. It's
Later with mo Kelly CAFI AM sixforty, Live everywhere in the iHeartRadio app.
You're listening to Later with Moe Kellyon demand from KFI AM six forty.
It's Later with mo Kelly Cafi AMsix forty. We're live everywhere on
the iHeartRadio app. And if youjust tuning in, Joining me in studio
(09:45):
is our regular commentator contributor Chris WoolseyChicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. He
joins us every other week with hisselections and recommendations on both Crackle and Red
Box. So let's get into that. Let's start off with Crack. What
do you have for us? Wehave got a ton of high adventure on
Crackle this month, lots of greataction thrillers, some of my faves.
(10:11):
So we talked this before. Thesummer movie slate is a little lacklusters,
shall we say, in theaters,so we're trying to make up for it.
On Crackle. We've got some funtitles. One is called Crystal Skulls
and this is basically imagine Raiders ofthe Lost arc meets American Treasure. So
(10:33):
you've got, uh, you knowthose crystal skulls that that archaeologists have dug
up and they're in museums. They'relike really pretty and featured Raiders of the
Lost archesco this is true. Wedidn't want to mention. We didn't want
to mention that one, the fourthone, but there are in this in
this movie world, there are twelveof these that have been stolen from museums,
(10:58):
and when they're brought together, they'reactually like throwing off everything about the
Earth, and the Earth is gettinglike global warming. There's storms, hurricanes,
there's tornadoes, earthquakes, everything's goingon because these twelve stones have been
these skulls had been brought together whilethere's a thirteenth they find out, and
if you can get the thirteenth andput it with the other twelve, it'll
(11:22):
actually make everything better again. Sonot climate change, No, well,
yeah, not that cloud. SoRichard Burgee from Desperate Housewives, Wendy Glenn
from The l Word, Sam Redfordfrom Jurassic World. It's really fun.
It's it's you know, it's highadventure. It's great. We also have
(11:43):
a phenomenal series from the UK calledCrossbow, and this is the story of
William Tell, which I never reallythought of William Tell as like an actual
historical figure. I didn't think thateither, Yeah, but apparently he was.
And this is it's kind of it'slike a Robin Hood. He's in
fourteenth century Switzerland, and you knowthere's these, you know, notfarious wealthy
(12:09):
people that are oppressing the common man, and William Tell and his band of
of good knicks come in and theyclean house. It's really it's really well
done. William Lyman from Mystic River, which I think is a phenomenal film.
Jeremy Clyde from Once upon a Timein Hollywood, Nick Brimble from A
Night's Tale. But if you likeperiod pieces, if you like you're looking
(12:31):
for like Game of Thrones, butsomething that that grandma and the kids can
watch too. It's you know,it's got all that kind of medieval action.
It's it's very fun crossbow and wehave three seasons of it, so
you can binge away. Oh,you have plenty of time to get acclimated
and acquaiet. Yes, and thenfinally we have you know, July fourth
coming up. So I thought itwould be fitting to try to squeeze in
(12:54):
at least one title. That's that'sgermane to that holiday. We have Independence
Day now that is not Independence cn CE, but e n t s
Independence Day. And this is aboutOkay, so aliens invade the Earth.
Familiar aliens the Earth. They takeover the Earth, and they give us
(13:18):
an ultimatum. We can either geton the ships with them and go back
to their home planet as slave labor, or we can draw a line in
the sand and we make Earth greatagain. And not Maga but Mega.
(13:39):
That's it all right, It's veryfun. Will Smith, Johnny Ray Diaz
from Gray's Anatomy, Jude Lanston fromthe Orville. It's very fun and is
it self aware? Yeah, Okay, there's a couple of nods and wings
(14:00):
going okay, okay, it's it'spretty fun. Yep, all right,
what about red Box? Red Box? So I thought, let's do fight
to the death again a little Julyfourth theme. So we've got a really
good one called death Hunt. Andthis is imagine Deliverance meets I Spit on
(14:20):
Your Grave. So there's more peopleare going to die. Yeah, yeah,
badly. So there's a boyfriend anda girlfriend. They are out on
this remote island. He is likea surveyor and they're out there and he's
doing his work while while they're outthere, three deranged locals decide that they're
going to do the most dangerous gameand they're going to hunt down this couple.
(14:46):
But little did they know that theypicked the wrong couple to pick on
skill set, a certain skill set. Marlee Malcolm from Reacher and Omar Tucci
also from Reacher, and I thinkthat they both were like, hey,
I like working with you. Weshould go make an action film. All
right, But it's very fun andif you like those sort of tot redneck
(15:09):
action things, then this is DeathHunt is definitely for you. Now,
this one is probably my favorite. This is Cage Fighter and this is I
see. The screenwriter was like, well, you know, we we love
boxing movies, right and we lovewrestling movies. Let's just put them together.
(15:30):
Like you got chocolate in my peanutbutter, you got peanut butter in
my chocolate. So this is amovie about what if you put the best
MMA fighter in the ring against thebest pro wrestler. So we've got Gina
Gershan from Bound and I love shecould do nothing wrong. She's phenomenal.
And she plays this fight promoter whocomes up with this kakamamie idea and she
(15:54):
puts Chuck Lydell and the Chuck Lydellthis right, and the John Bock and
she puts him in the ring togetherand shakes it like a couple of hornets
and sees what happens. Can Chuckact? Chuck can act? Okay?
I was. I was pleasantly surprised. This was a Crackle exclusive when it
(16:15):
first hit, so you can onlysee it on Crackle. And I'm gonna
say it was very fun. Imean, you know, it's it's not
Shakespeare, but it's exactly what youwant it to be. Well, it's
called Cage Fighter, It's not likeyou know, to be more not to
be You weren't expecting a soliloquy. No, it's more like to beat him
or not to be exactly one morebut he got another one final kill.
(16:38):
And Randy Couture plays a protection specialistwho's getting ready to retire, but he's
going to do one more gig.Randy can act, he can act.
He's actually phenomenal in this film.Gets sent down to Central America to protect
this wealthy couple. When he getsdown there, they failed to communicate to
(16:59):
him. Oh yeah, we're wealthybecause we stole eight million dollars from the
cartel and they're looking for the money. Right, yes, ok So you've
got Randy Couture, Billy Zane, who I always love guests on the show.
Is that right, he's been onthe show. I'm a big fan,
big fan. Dead Calm one ofthe best thrillers ever made. I'm
trying to get my son to watchit. Danny Trejo, James Russo,
(17:21):
and Doctor Drew for crying out loudfrom k Rock. Okay, I'm just
curious to see how these people fitin the same room. Okay, right,
much less the same movie. Yeah, Well, Doctor Drew's yoked to
now he's doing like protein shape commercials. Yes, yes, the shredded something.
Yeah. Yeah, so there yougo. Okay, final Kill.
I'll definitely check it out. Okthis is a good list going into the
(17:41):
Independence Day CEE weekend as opposed toIndependent A posh fs. That's right,
that's right. I'm curious. I'mactually going to watch that just because I
have to see how on the noseit is. Make earth grade again.
My goodness, Get out of here, Chris. It's Later with bo Kelly.
You can't buy a six forty. We're live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app.
(18:03):
You're listening to Later with Moe Kellyon demand from KFI AM six forty.
Just in case you didn't know,California has a zero tolerance policy for
the sale and use of illegal fireworks. Quote, it's illegal to sell,
transport, or use fireworks that donot carry the Safe and Sane seal,
(18:23):
and it is illegal to possess oruse any fireworks in a community where they
are not permitted. In other words, just because you may buy it one
place where it's legal to buy them, it doesn't mean that you could then
transport it to another city and usethem where they are not, and if
you didn't know, if convicted,a violator could be fired up to fifty
thousand dollars, be sent to jailfor up to one year, or both.
(18:45):
Close quote. Also, California considersskyrockets, aerial shells, firecrackers,
bottle rockets, and robin candles asillegal fireworks. In other words, everything
that Stephan and I here in ourneighborhood. Every single night, we hear
nothing but skyrockets, bottle rockets, firecrackers, roman candles every single night.
(19:07):
I'm reading that that is illegal.Well, it's not actually being policed in
my neighborhood, is What is theother thing about this? We all know
for the most part what is illegalwhen it comes down to fireworks, we
know, but nothing is ever doneabout it, at least not in my
neighborhood. I can't speak for MarkRonner, I can't speak for Twalla Sharp.
(19:29):
I'm just saying in my neighborhood thereis a fireworks season which goes from
about and I'm not exaggerating, Marchto September. I'm not exaggerating. You
will hear the bottle rockets. Yeah, we get it all year round in
our neighborhood. It's a festive neighborhoodwe live in. I'd hate to be
the wet blanket that goes over andknocks on the door and says, hey,
(19:53):
could you please keep the fireworks down, just prior to getting shot in
to face? I say, yeah, sometimes it's sometimes it's actual gunshots.
But like you, I'm going touse discretion as the better part of valor
and not say anything. It's notever going to be enforced. But it's
kind of weird how you say, hey, you shouldn't be using illegal fireworks,
(20:15):
and nothing has ever done about theillegal fireworks. And they're here just
about all year round. And Ihave my suspicions as far as where they
come from or how people get them. But it's a big industry. I
know that a lot of money ischanging hands with these fireworks, and they're
used all year round, not justfor like the Fourth of July. It
could be for a soccer game,it could be for the Super Bowl.
(20:37):
You hear someone scoring and the fireworksgo off. Obviously New Year's Eve they'll
shoot out fireworks and guns. Butit's just a year round thing. But
we focus on it for the Fourthof July. Independ this day weekend.
For those people who wish to enjoyfireworks and use fireworks and are going to
use the legal saye and sane fireworks. Just want to give you a list
(21:03):
of the cities in La County andOrange County which allow you to purchase safe
and sane fireworks. And as Isaid earlier, just because you can legally
purchase safe and sane fireworks in agiven city, it is illegal to then
use them in a city where thefireworks are illegal. Here's where you're allowed
(21:25):
to purchase and use safe and sanefireworks. Baldwyn Park, Bellflower, Carson
shout out to the old neighborhood CommerceCompton, Cutaheet. I think that's how
it's pronounced. Downey, Hawthorne,Huntington Park, Irwindale, Lamarada, La
(21:45):
Puente, Lakewood, Monterey Park,Rosemead, Santa Fe Springs, South el
Money, Southgate, al Hambra,Azusa, el Monty, Guardina, Hawaiian
Gardens, Inglewood, Okay, Stefan. So we're surrounded without giving everyone's information
(22:06):
out, we're surrounded by Inglewood andGuardena and Hawthorn. Yeah, basically everywhere
it's legal. But I don't everhear any safe and sane for our works.
I just don't hear the illegal stuff. Yeah, exactly, because I
mean, I mean, it'll ona fourth it'll actually sound like the legit
war zone. But any other dayit's sometimes like you were saying, it
(22:27):
could be gunshots, but it's becauseit actually worried me. One night,
I was hearing it and it soundedlike it was next door. But then
I realized, it's just they're soloud. I could tell, okay,
it was probably like a mile down, but that's how loud some of them
are. Already it's loud, andyou're not exaggerating. It sounds like ordnance.
It sounds like be root every singleyear. I'm accustomed to it because
(22:48):
I've dealt with it every single year. But I'm also cognizant of veterans who
live close to me. My brotherin law who's a veteran, if he
should happen to be in town,he's seen a lot of combat, and
you know, we watch over himbecause it sounds like combat. He's even
said it sounds like combat. Butwe get out of control with it.
(23:14):
In southern California, it is reallyout of control. And I had to
tell my wife because she lived indifferent parties. She grew up in New
Mexico, so she wasn't accustomed toall this hullablue when it came to fireworks.
And she would ask me, howdo you know the difference between fireworks
and gunshots? Well, there's somebasic rules. You just hope for the
best. Well, no, no, there's some things. There's a cadence,
(23:37):
there's there's more of a rhythmic cadenceto gunshots, and and they sound
different. Didn't sound differently than fireworks. It's kind of hard to explain,
but you can tell the difference. There's also a different tenor to the
shrieks. No. I actually toldmy wife, I said, if you
hear someone yell or scream afterward, that's usually a dead giveaway, no pun
(23:57):
intended. That's you know, itwas fire It was a gunshot as opposed
to fireworks. And the sounds arealso sometimes longer depending on what firework they're
shooting off, so lasts longer thanone gun shot. Right, if you
hear gunshots, you let's say youhear two or three pop pop pop.
That's about it. Obviously, firecrackersare fireworks a lot longer, much more
(24:18):
extensive, and it'll go on forthe rest of the night, and you
have people yelling and screaming and runningin fear. That usually is a hint.
But also getting back to the list, there's Longdale, Lynnwood, Maywood.
What the hell is Maywood in LosAngeles County. I've never heard of
Maywood? Is that? Is thisfor real? Towalla? Is there really
(24:41):
a Maywood in Los Angeles County?Let's look that up. I think someone's
trolling me. Just put that inthere. What the hell is Maywood?
I've been on this earth fifty fouryears and I've never heard of Maywood,
California. That's a fake city. That's an AI city. Someone just created
that. Oh it's like super supersmall. Okay, what what zip code
(25:04):
or areas? Uh? Nine ohtwo seven zero two seven? Oh where's
that? And it's like, whatis it night above Bell and Huntington Park.
Yeah, but I don't Yeah,I've never heard of Maywood. Sorry,
shout out to Maywood. If you'reoffended, I've never heard of you.
I still I need to see proofthat it's a real city. Manta
(25:26):
Bello, Norwalk, Palmdale, Paramount, All Legal with safe and sane,
Picco Rivera South Elmonti, Temple City, Vernon, City of Industry. That's
all legal. Let's go to OrangeCounty real quick. Anaheim, safe and
sane is legal there. Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Fullerton, Huntington Beach,
(25:47):
Stanton, Westminster, Garden Grove,Santa Ana Villa Park. No,
Newport Beach, Nope, they don'tallow that. No Seal Beach, No,
sir. They got standards out there. They don't want that fireworks stuff
in there. Riverside County, DesertHot Springs, Coachella. Yeah, of
(26:08):
course it's legal on Coachella. It'slike they're calling card. There's nothing there,
right, it's desert dirt in India. In San Bernardino County, just
about every city in San Bernadino Countyallows except for like Riverside. Yeah,
and there you go. If you'regoing to use it, you know,
be very safe. You say safeand saying but me, I don't.
(26:30):
I don't mess around with the fireworksbecause I've always grown up in it and
lived in an area in which they'reprobably shooting. And when they're they're shooting,
that means the bullets do come downat some point. Hey, Mark,
we want to come to our houseTVA. Still you're still on the
fence. Uh yeah, I meanwe can talk about it on or off
the air. I don't care. No, we don't have to talk about
it on the air. I'm justsaying I just want to just reiterate that
(26:52):
you have been extended the invitation becauseyou kept saying for the past five or
six months said, oh I wouldgo if I would have gone, unless
you if I knew when it washappening, if I would have gotten an
invite. Okay, well, solisten, we have to separate our daily
k fabeur, our daily pro wrestlingroutine from reality. And so reality is
that COVID is on a serious upswing. And uh, when I got sick
(27:17):
back in the fall, I goteverybody in my house sick, and so
I have some concerns about that.Okay, Well, I just want to
let you know my house is notvery big. There'll be a lot of
people, so we'll be packed together. There is an outdoor proportion you go
in the backyard. We'll have likea food and serving area in the garage.
So if you need some air,but other than that, you should
be fine. Thank you. Iwant to come over. I'm dying to
(27:40):
come over. Say hello, don'tyou live like an hour's drive away from
whom, not from me civilized?Yes, yeah, you're in close proximity
to you. But also it's thefourth. There won't be any traffic.
There won't be so you can getthere. Look at a split. If
I can make it there without givinganybody the finger that really I can't.
(28:00):
That's not my department. Okay, your road rage issues are yours and yours
alone. I am a zen master. I just dispense a little bit of
road wisdom. I'm not getting violenton anybody. Okay, I'm just letting
you know. In my neighborhood they'llshoot you for that. So I don't
want to get shot on the force. It is not patriotic to get shot
in the fourth. Do not flipanyone the bird on the fourth. Okay,
how about the host, Well,be careful. You'd be in my
(28:22):
house at that point. Well,it'd be rude of you to get on
my back for it. I thinkif you're gonna be a gracious host,
you should just accept that. Look, my law enforcement friends will be there
and they'll shoot you. You don'thave mags your place to keep, to
keep the firearms out. I said, I'll have law enforcement that they can
carry their guns however they want.I have mixed feelings about this. Even
(28:44):
more they will be armed. We'llhave some LAPD and LA Sheriff's deputies.
There can't tell if that makes mefeel cheaper, technl like getting froggy.
Look at the time. It's Laterwith Mokelly can if I am six forty.
We are live everywhere on the iHeartradio app. You're listening to Later
with Moe Kelly on demand from KFIAM six forty. I'm at a point
(29:07):
in my life where going on rollercoasters is not the thing for me.
It's the thing for my sons,it's the thing for my younger cousins and
nieces, but it's not for me. But it's still a big deal.
It's still a big deal. Andwhen I tell you that six Flags and
Cedar Fair have completed their merger,I'm talking about an eight billion dollar deal
(29:30):
and it's created a new amusement parkconglomerate that includes Magic Mountain of course six
Flags, but not very far so. I think that probably changes the game
and also the landscape here in southernCalifornia. Now, no one's going to
upend the King as in Disneyland. But if you are an amusement park enthusiast
(29:56):
like I used to be back inthe day, the amusement parks appealed to
different groups of people, different demographics. Disneyland, family environment, all ages,
come one, Come on, sixFlags. Magic Mountain. It's for
the ride enthusiast. It's for theroller coaster enthusiasts. If you're not big
on roller coasters, well there's nothingfor you at Magic Mountain, absolutely nothing.
(30:19):
If you love roller coasters, that'sthe place to go. And I
think somewhere in between is not thevery farm's at least how the consider that
or conceive of that in my head? Am I right or wrong? Twell,
yeah, that's about it. That'sabout it. All those six Flags
is also for the myscreans and thehooligan all is that. It's that.
And I haven't been in many years, but the last time I went,
yeah, it's it's where the knuckleheadsgo. And and I don't. I
(30:44):
don't. I don't want to bearound the knuckleheads because the knuckleheads are gonna
be knuckleheading and then I feel theyneed to respond to something, right,
they're gonna say something, and I'mgonna say something because that's just my nature.
Yep. And then it escalates fromthere and I end up in Magic
Mountain jail as opposed to this injail. Yeah, but this is really
interesting. The new six Flags willhave an impressive portfolio as it reads of
(31:07):
forty two different parks the United States, Canada, Mexico, and of course
it includes six Flags Match Mountain hereand not. It's very farm as a
result, as a result of thedeal combining the two companies, there's going
to be what they're saying is onehundred and twenty million dollars in cost savings
that it's expected within two years ofclosing the all stock deal. Now I
(31:30):
don't know this, but I wonderwhether this merger is a reflection of the
larger environment of the difficulty of maintainingsuccessful amusement parks. I wonder if we're
moving in the direction big picture awayfrom all these amusement parks. Remember you
you have the carnival that would cometo town every now and then. You
(31:52):
don't see too many of those. You don't see too many of those traveling
amusement parks, you know, withthe rickety rides and everything. You don't
see too many of those anymore. And I wonder if amusement parks more generally
are doing as well as they werefifteen twenty years ago, and if this
merger is a result of that, the difficulty of staying in business with all
(32:15):
these amusement parks. I mean, there are certain theme parks out here that
are damn near giving away seasons, classes, right, and every single thing
they can to get people in,because I believe it's more of the fact
that they've priced themselves out of makingit enjoyable for individuals to go. And
while Disneyland maintains the monopoly because theyare appealing to people who are coming from
(32:39):
not just California, but from aroundthe world. People literally fly in still
here to California to go to disneyLand, and it is something that appeals
to all generations. That is wherethe other amusement parks they kind of fall
off. You know, if yougo to Universal Studios, yeah, I
mean, if you're into that,if you're went to the the magic of
(33:01):
movies and turning them intize, sure, sure, I mean, but you
go around that park, You're therefor maybe hour and a half two hours
and you're like, okay, atall, I'll see it all. It's
just the lines are long. AndI wonder whether it's also a function of
whether they're they're struggling to compete withthe other offerings which are out there.
(33:22):
There's a lot more competition pulling atpeople's time for a hell of a lot
less money. Yeah. Yeah,And kids nowadays, like my kids,
they're very, very aware of howmuch it costs to go, and they
don't ask all hime. It's like, even though their mother even got them
season passes to Universal Studios, theygo once and once in a blue moon,
but it's not like, oh,let's go. It's like, oh
(33:44):
yeah, sure, that sounds likefun for me. It has to be
a special occasion, as in likesomeone's offering some free tickets, you know,
like you said, that's very special. It's like it's the company holiday
party that they throw at the amusementpark, or there may be a special
free pass for media. That's aboutthe only time I'm going. That's very
specific. For special, it's special. It's saying that I'm special in an
(34:07):
MTA statue commemoration sort of way.Yeah. Yeah. Mark Ronner very quickly
before we go to break wones. The last time you went to an amusement
park. It's been quite a while. I remember going to Disneyland a number
of years ago, and it's kindof it's it's not for me. Okay,
Stephan, what about you last timeyou went to an amusement park?
Because I asked you as I askyou this on your birthday, probably i'll
(34:30):
tell you about a year year anda half ago, and before that,
probably a year year and a half. Okay, okay, So you're going
Somemi regularly, Okay, I'm not. I just wonder if other people are.
Look the amy Kings of the world, the nick Paliochines of the world.
I think they're the exception, notthe rule. Yeah. Yeah,
(34:52):
they'll go to Disneyland fifteen times ina given year, no exaggeration. I
may go once everything fifteen years.Yeah, I got the kids. We
go Distant Land a lot. Butthat's so cost prohibitive. Well, you
know that's your problem. That's whatyou get for having all them crumb snatches
and everything. You should have thoughtabout that before you had the kids,
(35:17):
should have practiced, say sex,You could have been living like Mark right
now. That's exactly right, Lookat all you've given up, can't If
I am six forty, we liveeverywhere in the iHeartRadio app. Hey,
