Hour -2 (9.4.2025)

A Studio City balloon shop owner is heartbroken after his wife was detained by ICE — she already had two prior theft convictions, and now their family is reeling.
In Sherman Oaks, robbers stormed a mall jewelry store, smashing display cases in a brazen hit that left shoppers stunned.
Meanwhile, proof that ignoring email can come back to haunt you: someone in Columbus, Ohio, finally checked their inbox and found an interview request… from six months ago. Elsewhere in sports, Cowboys star Jalen Carter made headlines for all the wrong reasons — ejected just six seconds into the Cowboys–Eagles opener after a bizarre spitting incident.
And down in Orange County, Anaheim is trying to figure out how to better connect its sports venues with Disneyland, but no real solution has surfaced yet. Over in Irvine, locals say the city is being “invaded” — by delivery robots rolling through neighborhoods.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's KFI AM six forty and you're listening to the
Conway Show on demand on the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
San Diego Canyon is still closed in Orange County. We'll
let you know, or Angel let us know as soon
as that opens up. Horrifect accident where somebody perished, and
that's horrible. I mean, somebody's just on their way home
to hang out with their wife or husband or kids
or whoever it is, and that's that's it.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
It's gonna happen. Great, Yes, ma'am.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
I did receive a message from the highway patrol one
minute ago.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Good.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
I said, lane's possibly open in about twenty to thirty minutes.

Speaker 5 (00:39):
So we'll stay on top of that. I'll keep an
eye on it and let you know what happens.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Excellent, all right, thank you, Angel Martinez. There was a
story coming out of Studio City in channel two, four, five, seven,
nine eleven. They all did it about this guy who
owns elegant balloons and he's owned a balloon business I
think for twenty or twenty five years, and somebody has

(01:05):
got to at ask him how.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
He did that.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
I mean, he's just selling balloons, balloons and he's making
a living enough to feed himself, his wife, pay the mortgage,
put the kids through school on.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Balloons.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Balloons, that's what he does, elegant balloons in Studio City.
All right, So his wife is having some problems with immigration,
and let's find out what happened here.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
And how this guy's been able to stay afloat with balloons.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
It's a call from the Studio City community to rally
around the owner of a balloon business.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
He tells us to see that he's selling balloons.

Speaker 4 (01:59):
Wife was detained by federal agents even though she has
a green card. I says she was convicted on two
separate theft defenses. NBC four ariel as bas Okay.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Now the other stations missed this part of it. Let's
hear it again.

Speaker 4 (02:14):
Call from the Studio City community to rally around the
owner of a balloon business. He tells us his wife
was detained by federal agents even though she has a
green card. I says she was convicted on two separate
theft defenses.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Okay, two separate theft defenses while you're trying to get citizenship.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Not good?

Speaker 2 (02:34):
You may, I mean put yourself in that position. You
go to France, you fell in love with the Eiffel Tower.
Maybe you met some French dude there or some French
woman there, and you fell in love and you wanted
to become a citizen of France. And then you were
caught and convicted of two separate theft charges. And so

(02:56):
you know, most people when they steal, they don't get
convicted right away. You know, they say every conviction of
dui that a guy gets or a gal gets, they've
been driving two to two hundred and fifty times over
the limit and they finally get dabbed. So God only
knows how much theft has been going on.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
And I get that.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
You know, you're in the balloon business. Hard to stay
afloat selling balloons. But NBC got this one right NBC four.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
Ariela spoke to the woman's husband about how his family
is now uncertain about the.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Future just based on balloons. I would be uncertain about
the future.

Speaker 6 (03:36):
Totally totally lost my feeling. I honestly, even though I
was thinking what a life I have?

Speaker 7 (03:45):
Who shown a DAZZI Overwhelmed with anguish, He says he
hasn't seen his wife, Sharha ray Mubadam in almost a
month after ice agents detained.

Speaker 6 (03:56):
Her she had a green cord and then also she
passed the example for citizens. Shep they was waiting. She
was waiting for ceremony.

Speaker 7 (04:05):
The Iranian couple has owned this balloon shop in Studio
City for almost two decades.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Right twenty years of opening up shop every day and
waiting for somebody to come in and buy balloons.

Speaker 7 (04:19):
Sean says his wife received a letter from immigration for
an in person meeting. Thinking she was one step closer
to completing the process, she went in but was then
taken into custody who Sean says, she was transferred to
a detention facility in Phoenix, Arizona.

Speaker 6 (04:35):
She's not the bank crobber or Tief or her criminal citizen.
She is a very decent woman.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Okay, well, she may not be a bank robber, but
when you say she's not a thief, she was convicted
of theft twice twice.

Speaker 6 (04:54):
She's not the bank crobber or Tief or her criminal.
She is a very decent woman.

Speaker 7 (05:04):
Wu Shang says Sharha Ray was born in Iran and
entered the country legally with her documents in order, but
he believes a recent trip is the reason behind her detention.

Speaker 6 (05:14):
She was two months in Iran. That probably was three
months ago. When she came back was three months ago.
Three months ago she came back.

Speaker 7 (05:24):
Flagged her.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Do you think when she goes to Iran and she
tells her family in Iran what she does in America
to pay the bills, do you think she fudges the truth?
Or she tells everybody they're in the balloon game and
the people in Iran can't believe it. Wait a minute,
you sell balloons, that's it? Yeah, twice, that's all I

(05:47):
could say.

Speaker 7 (05:48):
Community members are now stopping by the balloon shop signing
a petition requesting that lawmakers step in before Sharret's next hearing.
Hushan says he is clinging to hope that one day
he will be reunited with his wife as he reflects
on the reasons why both of them chose to settle
here years ago.

Speaker 6 (06:06):
For our dream was us is a land of opportunity
and his freedom. I it was, but right now you
could see everything change. You don't feel secure anymore.

Speaker 7 (06:18):
In Studio City and Ariola NBC FORR News.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
Okay, that's how a lot of the news stations left
the story without the theft part of it.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
We received this news statement from Ice less than ten
minutes ago that reads, in part, despite being granted the
opportunity to remain in the country between August twenty fifteen
and May nine, twenty nineteen, Mogadam was convicted of two
separate theft offenses, demonstrating a clear disregard for US laws
and rendering her subject to removal under US immigration law.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
There you go, it's tough. It is tough out there, man.
I am shocked that. And maybe I'm on the moon
here that somebody can, you know, make a living in
Studio City just with balloons.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
I don't know the last time I bought balloons, but
I probably didn't spend that much. I may, you know,
my daughter's birthday a couple of years ago. May spend
eight dollars once in thirty years on balloons. Maybe there's
a game in there, though, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (07:25):
Maybe it doesn't like the.

Speaker 8 (07:26):
Arches that people want through maybe graduations, weddings.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Okay, maybe maybe you should be their spokesperson. Buddy, you
you sell it better than anybody.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
You know.

Speaker 8 (07:36):
People love balloons.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
I think I did. Do you like balloons?

Speaker 8 (07:42):
I don't care about balloons. Don't a lot of people
love balloons?

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (07:49):
Do you like balloons? Belly or your balloons gown? I
am you are the balloons queen.

Speaker 5 (07:55):
I think they're they bring joy to people.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
Yes, yeah, okay, I guess they do. When's the last
time you went out and purchased balloons? Well, spend some time.

Speaker 5 (08:07):
It's been a while.

Speaker 8 (08:09):
Yeah, she doesn't believe in bringing joy to people's lives.

Speaker 5 (08:11):
I do. I just haven't had an occasion to bring
joy to people's lives.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
Are you a latex traditionalists? Are you more of the
my lar you know, modern balloon knock out the power
in the neighborhood?

Speaker 3 (08:24):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (08:25):
Right, I didn't think about that. They're trying to get
rid of those in legislation, get rid of those mylar
balloons the power line. So this guy's fighting ice and
you know, legislation to stay in the balloon business. Plus
there's also a radical shortage in helium. You know, helium
is a natural substance, and we're running out of places

(08:46):
to find it.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
You know, helium's going away. So that guy man, I
got to give him that.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
He's got a lot on his plate and he's he's
handling it pretty well. On the other hand, look if
she gets out and they get back into the balloon business,
I think they're going to take off, you know, because
there's a lot of people sympathetic to people who are,
you know, fighting ice. And it's elegant balloons in Studio City.
So if you're gonna spend your balloon dollar anywhere, maybe

(09:13):
this is the the guy rolling there and get your
un balloons.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
That's what he sells, balloons. That's his game, balloons, every day, balloons.
It's remarkable.

Speaker 9 (09:33):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
Am six forty.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
I love the Sherman Oaks Fashion Square. I used to
go to that mall as a child. My mom loved
that bullocks there. There was a Broadway there, there was
an Orange Julius I believe there. It was a really
cool mall. It was an outdoor mall. A lot of
people don't know them, but Sherman Oaks Fashion Square on
Riverside and Woodman was It's between Woodman and Hazelteene right

(10:02):
off of Riverside, and it was a I'm.

Speaker 5 (10:04):
Sorry, is that the old Town and Country?

Speaker 2 (10:10):
No, that's town and Country is an Encino Okay, thanks
for knowing your malls.

Speaker 5 (10:15):
Hello, ay Times.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
Yeah, it's an encino right across from Plaza de Oro,
right off of Louis Yeah, I am a story and
ventur But this is Fashion Square in Sherman Oaks. It's
a very popular mall. There's a lot of money in

(10:38):
the Hills of Beverly No of Sherman Oaks, and a
lot of people in Sherman Oaks frequent that mall. If
you live in Sino, Sherman Oaks or Studio City, you
know that mall. You probably go there. It's very crowded Christmas.
They decorated beautifully. They did a great job putting that
mall together. Used to be an outdoor mall, then they

(10:59):
encased it. They made an indoor mall. It's fantastic. There's
a lot of stores there you'll enjoy. And I have
never been to that mall once in my life, and
I've been going there for forty years. I have never
been felt unsafe for a second at that mall, not
a single second.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
You can. They have a beautiful food court there.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
You can walk in late at night, you can walk
out late at night in the parking lot. I've never
looked over my shoulder to see who's coming or who's
gonna wipe me out. Never until now, Until now, because
in the middle of the day. I think this happened
at four or four point thirty in the afternoon, one
of the jewelry stores inside the mall was robbed, or

(11:42):
at least they tried to. They brought in the big hammers,
the big sledgehammers. You know, two or three guys in hoodies.
And I don't know who is letting young men in
a mall in Sherman Oaks when it's one hundred and
five out. You're letting young people with hoodies into the mall,
that's a that's a no brainer. You know exactly what

(12:04):
they're gonna do. They're gonna rob you. I would have
a policy no hoodies when it's one hundred and five
in the uh in the mall, because that's what they're
gonna do.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
And they they tried to.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Rob this jewelry store. Well, the jeweler or the guy
Rownes's store spent extra money on bulletproof casings. Everything, all
of his jewelry was under bulletproof glass. And these kids
pounded on that glass for I don't know two three
minutes with huge sledgehammers and they couldn't break the glass.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
So let me get this straight.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Three guys get out of a car with hoodies on
and sledgehammers and walk in the mall and there's no
security there.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
I don't know what's going on. It's an invitation for
these the kids to rob the place.

Speaker 10 (12:58):
You can hear the loud bangs at inside the mall.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
This is right inside the mall at around four o'clock
in the afternoon.

Speaker 10 (13:04):
As at least four hooded suspects attempt to bransack a
jewelry store with large hammers, sending panic customers running for safety.
The robbery happened at Christov's Jewelers inside the Westfield Fashioned
Square in Sherman Oaks around four thirty Wednesday afternoon.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
I saw just the smash doug glasses, not to say nothing.

Speaker 10 (13:26):
Ermino works at a children's clothing boutique two stores down
and heard what she thought was gunfire, so she locked
herself inside the store.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
But I saw the three people and we're scared and
we closed the door.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
That's how loud it was in that mall. You get
here throughout the entire mall, and where's the security? Where
is the mall security?

Speaker 6 (13:51):
It's very scary.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
What did it sound like to you to do?

Speaker 7 (13:55):
It's like gone, like gone, shot, aren't no, it's like that.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
I'm scared. Lapd was called out, wouldn't it to say?

Speaker 10 (14:05):
The suspects took off in two vehicles, a Corvette and
Kmaro poorly stolen and dumped. This van eysed neighborhood ring
video shows what appears to be the same suspects wearing
hooded sweatshirts in ninety degree weather, casually walk away. No

(14:25):
merchandise appears to have been stolen. Employe spent hours trying
to clean up the mess. The owners did not want
to go on camera. But it's not the first time
they've been targeted.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
Wait what, But.

Speaker 10 (14:37):
It's not the first time they've been targeted.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
They've been targeted in that mall in the past inside
Fashion Square.

Speaker 10 (14:43):
But it's not the first time they've been targeted, which
is why they recently had shatterproof display cases installed.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
Ah probably very expensive, but maybe you get an insurance
break if you have shatterproof, bulletproof casings and glasses per
glass on top of your jeweler.

Speaker 10 (14:58):
With unbreakable gl glass designed to prevent retail staft.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
We are surprised, really, is that right? We are surprised.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
You're surprised that guys are Every day in the valley
there are three or four homes or three or four
businesses being robbed. So where does the surprise come in?

Speaker 3 (15:19):
We are surprised.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
Okay, well you got to you gotta adjust your surprise
meter because you.

Speaker 7 (15:25):
Shouldn't be, because every time there's secrety they're working here
for me, it's surprise that time.

Speaker 10 (15:35):
So the suspects were only able to break the top glass,
not the bottom to your glass.

Speaker 3 (15:39):
Again, they left empty handed. No suspects have been arrested.
They'll be back.

Speaker 2 (15:44):
They'll be back, and then people will be like, oh,
I was you know they're going to come back and
then they're going to interview this woman and say, hey,
what'd you think about it?

Speaker 3 (15:53):
We are surprised, really.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
But they did it last week and two weeks ago.
What about the fourth time they did it? We are surprise,
still surprised. Okay, well, somebody's got to adjust. It's always
got to define. I think what surprised.

Speaker 3 (16:07):
Means we are surprised.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
You shouldn't be surprised. You should be, uh, you know,
it should be. It's very typical. But the valley is
riddled with crime. It's not the same valley I grew
up in. It's not a lot of robberies up in
the Hills, Studio City, Sherman Oaks and Sino Tarzana, Woodland Hills.
It happens every single day, and now it's happening during

(16:29):
the day. You know, it used to happen at night.
Now in Woodland Hills. A guy who was having his
car detailed in his driveway at a very expensive home in
Woodland Hills and at eleven thirty in the morning on
Labor Day, three guys robbed him and robbed the guy
cleaning the car in the driveway, broad daylight, eleven thirty.

(16:49):
Everybody's home, So these guys don't worry about cops or
security anymore. Here's where it gets real dangerous when it
starts happen at four thirty and afternoon.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
Eleven thirty in the morning. Not good.

Speaker 9 (17:01):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI

Live In Orange, county you might be in for a.
Surprise they're going to try to put a gondola or
a gondola from The Honda center To. Disneyland because The
Honda center is a hub. There you've got a couple
of the train tracks that show up. There you've Got

(23:08):
Angel stadium that's where and then The Honda center where
The ducks. Play and they want to put a way
to get from there To disneyland without having to go
and get in your car and deal with. Traffic the
problem they're going to have is that gondola is going
to have to cross two major, freeways the fifty seven

(23:30):
and The Five freeway to get. There BUT i bet
you that that gondola is done before The Dodger stadium
to the train station in DOWNTOWN. La they've been talking
about the train station To Dodger. Stadium it's only about
a mile and a, half maybe two miles as the

(23:52):
crow flies.

Speaker 3 (23:53):
And, now and they've not been able to do.

Speaker 2 (23:55):
It but In Orange county there's less resistance to new,
ideas to good, ideas and this thing might be up
and running pretty, quickly like in the next couple of
years or, so.

Speaker 3 (24:08):
Which would be.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
Great you, know you go To, disneyland you want to
see A ducks game or An angels. Game getting the
gondola fly over there two major freeways might be a
little hairy in a little gondola flying over the Five
freeway where people are doing one hundred and thirty miles an.
Hour AND i think the second idea is to go,
underground but that is going to take a lot of

(24:29):
work and messes up a lot of people's. Lives so
they're going to take this gondola and fly over two
major freeways From disneyland to The Honda.

Speaker 13 (24:37):
Santaheim this whole area is actually going about a big.
Remodel this is going to be a park at some.
Point it's going to connect to The Honda, center and
it's all going to be connected to that Oc vibe
entertainment district that's being built out around. Here some of
the folks In anaheim for years have been trying to
find a way to connect this new entertainment district that's

(24:58):
being built to the other really popular place In, Anaheim.
Disneyland one idea they're talking about that you were talking
about getting off the ground is. This this is a
rendering of a. Gondola this rendering made by a company
Called Swift. City city staff members have been talking To
Swift cities about the possibility of connecting these two popular

(25:18):
areas with a. Gondola, now there are some challenges if they're.

Speaker 3 (25:23):
Going to do, that.

Speaker 13 (25:23):
Though one of the biggest challenges is in between here In.
Disneyland it's about two and a half miles Along. Kotella
you have two freeways you would have to go over
to connect the two with a. Gondola you've got the
fifty Seven freeway and the Five. Freeway talking to a city,
spokesperson he wanted to warn people this is very early
stages they're doing exploratory conversations trying to figure out ways

(25:48):
to go about connecting these two, districts and. GONDOLA a
gondola is just one of the options being considered.

Speaker 12 (25:54):
So it can be operated safely without a driver what's
known as trackless tram or buses that.

Speaker 3 (26:00):
Don't require overhead.

Speaker 12 (26:01):
Wires and then, yes one of them is. Gondola but
we do want to caution everyone that we are potentially years.
Away oh, no oh, no and merely in an exploratory.

Speaker 3 (26:13):
Phase oh.

Speaker 2 (26:14):
No got to get it moving, quickly you, know we
got we. Gotta when you have a good idea like,
this they should just start working on it.

Speaker 3 (26:21):
Immediately and when he says, exploiting how many.

Speaker 2 (26:23):
Years have we been talking about the high speed rail
From San francisco To Los? Angeles thirty forty? Years and
then how many years also we've been talking about the
high speed train going To vegas another thirty.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
Years we got to move.

Speaker 2 (26:35):
Quicker there are a lot of, countries a lot of
other states that move quicker than we, do and we're
just too. Slow the environmentalists get out, there the bug,
experts you, know get out. There the animal. Lovers you're
going to upset some kind of, toad and we just
never built anything really cool or new because we're constantly
being blocked by a very small minority of.

Speaker 13 (26:57):
People and when he says, exploratory they really. Are are
just in that stage right. Now it's basically staff members
reaching out to, companies getting, ideas talking to different. People
they have not introduced any constant any of these concepts
to the city council as of.

Speaker 3 (27:11):
Yet and you heard.

Speaker 13 (27:11):
There if and when any of this gets, done it
could be years, away and they don't know if it's
going to be a gondola or one of those other
ideas they're looking at for. Now reporting here In, Anaheim
I'm Chip Yost Chi la Five.

Speaker 3 (27:21):
News.

Speaker 2 (27:22):
Ah that guy's, Great Chip, Yost, YEAH i love that.

you see one of these guys stroll by, you you might, think,
wait Did wally And eve have a? Baby that thought
has occurred to An Orange County register reporter and some
of our, producers but. No these robots are the creation

(27:56):
of Dak, spot An oregon company that has been contra's
acted by The city Of irvine to send its robots
all around the city to look for problems on, sidewalks,
trails and access.

Speaker 3 (28:10):
Ramps this is a.

Speaker 14 (28:11):

measuring sidewalks to make sure they're safe for.

Speaker 3 (28:26):

Speaker 2 (28:27):
Impress you got a lot of money down, there that
city Of, irvine they got it going.

Speaker 13 (28:31):
On in all the robots will scan more than nine
hundred and fifty miles of public sidewalks and more than
seventy miles of paved.

Speaker 14 (28:40):
Trails they have internal inclinometers that will measure things like the.
Slope they have laser range finders built in that'll pick
up things like uplifts and. Cracks then they have two
cameras right here that are dual stereo.
