Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's KFI AM six forty and you're listening to The
Conway Show on demand on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
What's Up, Party people? It is the Conway Show. Tim's away,
Mark Thompson sitting in on this holiday and I love
the Christmas holidays in LA. When people have left town,
it is insanely open, like the normal lights that you
(00:29):
have to wait for five cycles through just to get
to the green that allows you to cross the intersection.
Not today, not tomorrow. In general, I understand there's some exceptions,
and please, I mean, we're a congested urban area and
so there's always going to be traffic on some level,
but the amount of traffic is so diminished it's so
(00:51):
terrific to drive around town. We oftentimes leave town like
a lot of other people do during the holidays. And
one of the reasons and the things that I always
say is I'd like to actually be here during the holidays.
It's probably the way LA was in nineteen sixty five,
before you know, all of us got here. It just
(01:12):
is a far what should I say, just a looser
kind of urban environment, meaning they're just not as many
cars around. So anyway, if you're in town, or if
you're in southern California during this period, I hope you're
enjoying a little bit of that, because I've first hand
seen that it is definitely an easier commute to wherever
you're going. Now, that's said, when you get there, they're
(01:34):
people doing last minute shopping. So a lot of the
shopping areas, shopping malls, mini malls, et cetera, can be
pretty clotted with cars, but it is, nonetheless, I think,
a really good time to be here in Southern California.
Welcoming Elaine Gonzales, a newsperson today for Krozier. Hi, Hello Eileen.
(01:55):
By the way, Oh did I say, Elaine? Yeah? Yeah,
I think of that that eighty song. Come on, Eileen.
Oh good good, thank you, you forget it. Thank you.
Eileen Gonzalez is here in place of Michael Krozer, and
Bella is here in place of Staffus. Yes, Richie is
here in place of Sharon. Hello, and I think on
(02:20):
traffic in place of Angel is it Lucy Hill? Yeah,
that's what I was told. Anyway, it is really great
to I'll tell you something else. I used to always
work the holidays at Fox eleven, where I spent twenty
three years. In fact, as you know, it was a
fan favorite. There's a big statue there at the Fox
(02:42):
eleven lobby memorializing me in the number one news team
at the time. Yeah, but anyway, I used to always
work the holidays for the same reason that it's fun
to drive around in La right now, and that is
that no one's around in the building on the holidays.
So same is true here at iHeart. There's no one around.
(03:03):
You park anywhere you want. It's it's terrific. There's no management,
there are no when why was it Fox eleven? It
was just good. There's no management there, So everybody's just
a little looser, you know. Again, people are just they're
dressed more casually. There's just a less of a sense
of urgency. Now that might not be the best thing,
but it is a fact. So I just enjoy this period.
(03:28):
And also I'll say it's the holidays. People are generally
speaking in a better mood. There's just a little warmth,
you know, so the season greetings thing. Maybe they're buzzed.
I don't know what the reason is, but the fact
is people are just a little friendlier. I think in
general during the Christmas holidays. So again, whatever you're doing,
(03:48):
glad you could bring us with you on the iHeartRadio
app and we will be here with you throughout. California
is growing again. Population rebounds to near pre pandemic levels.
All that stuff about people are leaving they're going to Austin, Texas,
where they're turning Texas into California, not so much. The
(04:14):
SMP closing a hire to begin the holiday week, Tech
stocks rebounding a little bit, closing slightly higher. And the
report of the missing GOP congresswoman who is in a
senior facility. She's in a memory care award, so she's
really not operating her own life. That has created a backlash.
(04:37):
We'll get into some of these stories as we continue.
Bill Clinton was hospitalized. He has a fever, they say,
but he is in good spirits and I'm just reading.
He's seventy eight years old, he developed a fever. They've
(04:58):
admitted him to Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, and appreciates
the excellent care he's receiving. He's in blah blah blah blah,
he's in good spirits, blah blah blah blah blah blue.
He's had several health issues over the past two decades,
mostly related to heart problems. You remember he went through
(05:21):
that quadruple bypass surgery in four had two coronary stents
placed in his heart in February twenty ten. Well, he's
going to take on Dick Cheney as most heart issues
after leaving office. I thought Cheney was the gold medalist,
but Clinton fast approaching. He also underwent surgery for a
(05:41):
collapsed lung in five. Then he went. Didn't he go vegan?
I think Clinton went vegan. He lost all that weight.
I didn't realize it was probably prompted by his doctors saying, dude,
you've got to clean up your act. He was hospitalized
in California for a blood infection in twenty twenty one,
(06:05):
but he did speak at the National Convention for the
Democrats in August, so you know again when you listen
to him speak now, he is definitely someone who's aging.
I mean, he doesn't speak with the same dynamic of
his voice that he used to have, but he seemed
all there in any case. Now he's been hospitalized just
with his fever, and he's under observation. A detail in
(06:31):
the Luigi Menngione case. I will get to that. And
it's true we get these stories every year, but this
story for Christmas has a twist. I will get to
that out of the Crenshaw District. As we continue.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
AM six forty and should.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Be back Monday. I think I believe that's the plan.
Heading off the next hour Dorothy Lucy, Remember Dorothy Lucy
from the World of Good Day La. She has a
new podcast. She's gonna be talking about it that she
cruises through. And then also next hour, Stormy Simon. You
know who's Stormy Simon is. She's a president of a
(07:17):
two billion dollar company. Yeah, got my attention too. Plus
you get the name Stormy, which got my attention. She
is a glass shattering e commerce pioneer, they tell me,
a celebrated business leader. We'll talk to her about her
latest endeavor as well. They're high surf warnings and advisories
(07:39):
an effect along the southern California coast or respecting rain tomorrow.
I don't know how much rain we're gonna get. I'm
seeing in my magical little cartoon here that tells me
exactly what the weather will be Via cartoon that we
have some rain expected. They're saying like a forty percent
chance in the valleys. But in any case, there's an
(08:00):
increased risk of coastal flooding on beach roads and nearby
parking lots and Redondo huge waves crashed overnight and these
large swells could catch people off guards, So officials are
urging beach goers to exercise caution. They come and they
go these huge waves. They suggest that there are even
(08:21):
some fifteen foot waves coming in again. Light showers on
Christmas Eve could make roads slick for travelers. So that's
the update there. By the way, did you see that
in Santa Cruz the peer collapsed? Crazy, absolutely wild? The
pier collapsed into the Pacific Ocean. Two people were rescued
(08:44):
by lifeguards. A third person was able to get to
safety on their own. But Northern California having been hit
by rain by the way last week. Now, I don't
know what this incident is related to, Like is it
a weather related event or whatever. They have the same
(09:06):
dangerous high surf that we have and we've seen it
along the coast. But I don't think the surf was
the reason that came down. I mean, it had to
have been structurally compromised in some other way. But again
the Santa Cruz pier collapsing, heavy rains and high surf
affecting northern California, also affecting Oregon, Washington, and there was
(09:32):
damage to the pier in Santa Cruz, also in Capitola Seacliff.
That was last year. They had issued a warning to
residence in Santa Cruz telling him to expect hazardous conditions
at the beaches. But I mean, this is same morning
that we just issued. But they shut down all access
(09:52):
to the wharf by one o'clock today. Pedestrian traffic blocked
because of this partial collapse of the pier. They are
getting thirty to forty foot waves according to the National
Weather Service, some waves reaching sixty feet, So you know,
(10:13):
on some level, I guess the repeated pounding of the
surf against that structure. I mean, when you're getting waves
that are reaching sixty feet in height, I mean at
some point maybe that structure is giving way. But in
any case of partial collapse, two people fished out of
the water and a third person out on their own.
Luigi Manngioni he pleads not guilty in a New York courtroom.
(10:40):
There are state charges in the murder of the United
Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He faces eleven state charges first
degree murder. His next court appearance is set for February
twenty first. State prosecutors are saying they found him in
possession of what is believed to be the murder weapon.
Surveillance videos show a guy matching his description before and
(11:03):
after the attack, including outside the hilton where Thompson was shot.
There are federal charges, as you know, and the key
difference between the state and federal charges that the state
argues the shooting was an act of terrorism, and the
federal charges open the possibility of the death penalty. This
(11:28):
is just what I've learned based on reading. We have
a legal analyst who comes in on my show and
the Mark Thompson charges a YouTube show, and he spoke
about the fact that the terrorism part of this might
be a stretch in a reach. Now, admittedly, the sentiments
of the public probably I understand that there's a lot
(11:48):
of sentiment for Luigi because there's this feeling Luigi Mangioni
is sort of a freedom fighter. He took down this
evil CEO who heads up this evil insurance company. But
apart from that, there is real sentiment as well, probably
in that jury pool. I mean, again, it has to
(12:09):
be established the jury, but but you know what I mean,
from the public that will make up the jury pool.
There is real sentiment that this guy is a bad guy,
cold blooded killer, and this is the wrong way to
make your point. And for that reason it seems as
(12:30):
though the case could be a layup. But here's the
part that gets a little tricky, and that is the
act of terrorism. Thing was an upgrade that was sought
by the state. I don't know if it was to
make a point legally, if it was to somehow send
the message that we take this even more seriously. Because
(12:50):
it was to have been a second degree murder charge,
the inclusion of terrorism kicked it up to first degree.
So now you've got a first degree murder charge, but
you also have a higher bar to clear if you
want a conviction. So terrorism would suggest that this was
(13:10):
done in furtherance of creating an atmosphere of terror in
New York or wherever, and that isn't indicated in any
of the writings of Luigi Manngioni. It's not indicating anything.
Don't they already takes. It doesn't take the stink off
of what he did. It was a horrible thing that
he did, killed a guy in cold blood, lay in
(13:34):
wait for him. But my point is simply from a
legal standpoint, and that's what we're left with now. Now
the legal gears grind on, you may not be able
to clear that bar of terrorism. So now with the
addition of terrorism on the state side, it's first degree
murder and it's a death penalty case. So during his
(13:56):
court appearance, he entered with his hands and feet shackled.
He was wearing a burgundy sweater they say, over a
white collared shirt and khaki pants. He leaned forward and
said not guilty into a microphone when the judge asked
him to enter his plea. He spoke quietly and extensively
with his attorneys during his brief court appearance. His hands
were unshackled long enough for him to sign some papers.
(14:18):
He appeared to be listening intently as his attorney spoke
to the judge. Prosecutors said that they have been assured
by Feds that the staycase will move forward prior to
the federal trial. His attorney, Karen Friedman, Agnafilo requested immediate
(14:39):
expedited discovery in the case. She wants to see everything
that the prosecutors have. Prosecutors say, we've got a lot.
The amount of material is voluminous, including thousands of hours
of surveillance video, and the attorney say, we want to
see at all. Another coincidence is this attorney was a
guest on my show Karen Friedman Agnefilo. You know why,
because she was a great legal analyst, did a great
(15:02):
podcast and I just thought it was really good. I thought,
I wonder if what you can get her on the show,
and she was, She's on my YouTube Joe Mark Thompson Show.
But now she's defending this guy. So she of course
is representing her client, so she's saying he won't be
able to get a fair trial. Statements made by government
officials have been prejudicial. But these are things that you
expect on some level for a defense attorney to say,
(15:23):
and she's saying all of it. But what you will
hear as well from prosecutors is, look this guy your client.
Luigi was creating an atmosphere of fear on the streets
of New York. In the days that have followed it,
is a radicalization of young people that he has created
(15:46):
with his manifesto and his act of quote defiance. He's
a killer, open and shut. Those are the essential arguments.
I think they'll be played out. But on the legal side, again,
the up charge of terrorism that might actually play in
(16:06):
Luigi Mangioni's favor because it's unlikely from everything I've read,
everything I've heard again, legal analysts that I've spoken to
have all said that is a high bar. So we
will see when we come back. It's a warm Christmas
story that started as an ugly Christmas story. We'll get
to that next.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
AM six forty.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Yeah, babe, yeah yeah. Crank it up for the holidays, kid,
you know it KFI AM six forty live everywhere in
the iHeartRadio app. You've got family coming in, You've got
family going out. You're the family that's coming in, You're
the family that's going out. Take us with you on
the iHeart Radio app. There is a familiar It's Mark
Thompson here for Tim Conway Junior. By the way, Tim
will be back on Monday. It is a common story.
(16:55):
Sadly during the holidays, you get these stories. So this
one has a starts like kind of sad, and then
it gets better. This U haul that was filled with
donated toys that was stolen in South LA told you
that story last week, and they had a whole big fundraiser.
(17:19):
It was a concert and people brought toys for all
these kids who otherwise would have nothing at the holidays.
And while the concert's going on or soon after, the
guy who's watching the truck this is like right out
of a bad movie or something, he goes to get coffee,
(17:42):
leaves the truck unattended. They break in, and they jack
easily over half the toys in the truck. So, I mean,
it's devastating to the group that's trying to, you know,
both raise money and help all these kids out with
all these toys. Well La City firefighters have helped out.
(18:06):
They have saved Christmas for hundreds of kids in Crenshaw
where this whole thing went down. Eugene Henley, developer of
I'm Sorry, founder of Developing Options, which is the name
of the group, stunned to see help arriving from the
La City firefighters. This is beautiful, he said, what else
can we say you saved the day. They run developing Options.
(18:28):
They've run it for twenty years. They've been sponsoring a
Christmas toy giveaway for the community. But again on Saturday,
what happened was so awful. They had their U haul
packed with all the presents stolen. Their son, Dian Henley,
(18:49):
who's a linebacker for the LA Chargers, was also at
the event to help the families, and he said about
the ripoff, you kind of wonder what type of people
would do that. But beyond that, it's the people that
came back and rallied to get us all here for
this moment. He said, I just can't be more thankful
for the people that are involved right now. Henley added
(19:10):
that the Spark of Love surprise is the best gift
of the season. They helped more than three hundred families
in need. So the firefighters showed up. I got a
call from ABC seven telling us about this situation, said
firefighter Michael Marquez. I had a semi in the valley
picking up toys from all the fire stations, so I
(19:32):
just redirected it brought all the toys to the Crenshaw area.
This whole thing is a blessing come out and get toys,
says thirteen year old Keith Mears. And the Henleys are
hoping that the public will be able to track down
the thieves who stole the U haul, or better yet,
they hope the suspect will do the right thing and
return the truck with all the presents. You'd think you'd hope,
(19:55):
But in any case, they have stopped that what was
the skin of a bad holiday there in the Crenshaw
The Container Store has filed for chapter eleven. Say it
ain't so, I will tell you a secret between you
and me, and I mean no offense to the Container Store.
(20:15):
But I never understood how you were open for one day.
I just couldn't. I couldn't understand. I went in and
I thought, like, how does this store stay open? They
just sell like baskets and kind of boxes and kind
of stuff that you you know, they sell containers. I mean,
it's appropriately named the Container Store, But tell me how
(20:39):
there's enough there to keep you open in some of
the most expensive real estate in Los Angeles. I mean
they were at Century City, at that Westfield mall. There's
another contin Container store, I think in another Westfield mall
in the valley and I saw a third container store
that I can think of. But they are now they're
not going. They're filing for Chapter eleven bankruptcy. So they
(21:05):
hope that they'll be able to sort of rearrange their
debt and they'll come back bigger and better than ever.
As they say, we filed for Chapter eleven bankruptcy protection
to quote, bolster our financial position, fuel growth initiatives, and
drive enhanced long term profitability. I always thought, as long
as bed Bath and Beyond is around, this container store
(21:28):
is never really going to catch altitude. I just felt like,
I'm sorry because everything I can get, I get all
of your container stuff, generally speaking, is of bed Bath
and Beyond. But bed Bath and Beyond ain't around anymore.
So maybe Container Store you got a shot. I don't know. Still,
pro tip, I'd broaden it beyond just containers, is what
(21:49):
I would do. That's my tip to you for the future.
I love you. You've got the container thing really carved out.
It's yours. You're the container store. But I'm suggesting maybe
just increase a little bit of the roster. Taken some
other stuff. But they have declared Chapter eleven bankruptcy protection.
(22:10):
When we come back. Christmas and Hanaga collide. What could
it be? It's not what you think the story.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
Next, you're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from
KFI Am six forty.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Dorothy Lucy JOINSS just after the five o'clock hour. Here
she's got a new podcast and curious what she's been
doing since Good Day La. You know she was on
that Fox eleven dominant morning show years ago and now
she's I guess reconstituted herself as a podcaster. Very cool.
Christmas and Hanukah are happening at the same time this year,
(22:49):
and that has not happened since twenty sixteen, and it
happens rarely. So this for people in mixed faith relationships,
blends the two holidays at the same time. In Duluth, Minnesota,
the thirty three year old couple say, it's nice to
(23:12):
get it all done on the same day. It isn't
that really what it's all about? Everybody. Let's just get
it done, all right, and we can get it done.
We get it all done the same day. Can we
fold it all together? This gift is for Hanaga, Christmas,
whatever else you're celebrating. Look, my birthday is the day
after Christmas, Okay, my birthday, nobody shows up to I
(23:34):
can't get people to come to anything because they're away.
They're busy there with family. And when you're a kid,
you get the gift for Christmas and your birthday. I
mean to be fair, they are essentially on the same day,
you know. But it's really tough because people are so
excited about Christmas and then it's like, oh yeah, and
your birthday of course. So if you have a December birthday,
(23:59):
I'm with you. Anyway. They say, it's all nice to
get it all done on the same day, and yet
there are so many lights in their house there in
Michigan that they think it's an obvious firehouse hazard. The
tree is now safely nestled in a corner of the
dining room, they say, and this is something that it
(24:20):
will happen again, But it doesn't happen frequently. The Hebrew
calendar is lunar based, and so it shifts in relation
to the solar calendar, which is the calendar that we're
all on. About sixty three percent of US adults identified
as Christian, two point four percent as Jewish, and it's
(24:44):
likely that many US households observe both holidays. As interfaith
relationships are fairly common. They are nearly two in ten
Americans who are either married or living with a partner
say that their spouse or partner has a different religious
afiliation than they do. That's according to the Public Religion
Research Institute. But a lot of people are saying, as
(25:10):
I'm reading about various Christian communities and Jewish communities that
are kind of washed together for particularly this holiday season,
that it's very hard to in public displays of lights
and stuff. If you want to kind of rep your
holiday on your house or in your home, it's hard
(25:30):
when they're happening at the same time, I guess to
rep them both. You know that it can be a
little bit of a mess from the standpoint of lights
and messaging. But apparently the arrival of the hit series
Nobody Wants This, which is a romantic comedy about a
single rabbi who falls for an agnostic sex podcaster, that
(25:51):
has added kind of some spirit to the conversations around
the holidays. It stars Adam Brody, and apparently there is
a lot now that's happening as the result of this.
The success of the Netflix series that even spills over
into e commerce. There's this Chrismica thing that's happened this year.
(26:14):
Instead of Christmas and Hanukkah, it's Chrismica. See h R
I s m u kk Ah and they're Christmaka signs.
On Etsy, you can buy all this stuff that, you know,
reps Christmica stuff, ugly sweaters that say Christmica. Anyway, it's
(26:36):
a quirky development in this Christmas Hanukkah collision that happens
on this coming Christmas. By the way, just speaking of Netflix,
we watched carry On last night, which is a really
it's a good ninety minute watch. And I think, and
(27:00):
you tell me, you go ahead and watch it and
tell me maybe you've already seen it, because I think
it's the number one stream netflixlix show. You know, when
you go on they say there's number one stream show
with America. Right now, I think it's kind of got
a die hard ish thing going, you know, die hard
Christmas movie thing going. Now again, there's a certain sacrocanc
(27:22):
quality to die Hard as a Christmas How dare you
even suggest that anything could challenge die Hard? Is the
Christmas movie? All right? So I'm not challenging it. I'm
just saying this, can I think run with it. It's
really tense, there's action, there're twists. It takes place at Christmas,
(27:42):
and it takes place at an airport, and it's called
carry on because it involves a bad guy trying to
get a piece of luggage carry on luggage onto the plane.
And the bad guy is played by Jason Bateman, who
(28:04):
is a really interesting choice to play a bad guy.
I mean, Jason Bateman is really having a moment. He
has that SmartLess podcast which I think they sold for
one hundred million dollars and that's the podcast success. He
had Ozark's, which was really a terrific series. What was
it three seasons of that. It was thought Ozark was
(28:26):
the best.
Speaker 1 (28:26):
It was so Goodson Bateman.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
Yeah, I mean not, there's not much to what's not
to love. He's a great actor. Here's a certain aspect
to his personality. It comes out even in his acting.
That's just pan Yeh was arrested Development, arrested, developments brilliant. Yeah,
arrested development the best, the very best. And he plays
(28:51):
the bad guy here. But even playing the bad guy,
he you see what a there's an aspect to who
he is is that is endearing or charming or mysterious
or you know what I mean. He doesn't play the
classic bad guy bad guy like you'd never want to
take an uber with him, you know what I mean,
(29:12):
you want to hang out with him exactly, Like that's
a bad guy. I could warm up too, right, you know,
But he's a loathsome guy in this Netflix movie. He
plays a really bad dude. But nonetheless he's a really
interesting choice and it does work. So yeah, So Jason
Bateman is having a moment, so I recommend it. It's
(29:32):
called carry On, and again, it's ninety minutes. It's not
a series. You're not getting drawn into some long thing.
And it is a Christmas movie. So you tell me
whether it can rival die Hard or is even in
the hunt. But it's definitely one to check out for
the holiday season on my list, top of my list.
Now good, I think you will enjoy it. It's a
(29:52):
hang on tight, It's quite a ride. When we come back,
it'll be Darthy Lucy talking about her latest project, you know,
Doroth Issues on Good to La Forever. I want to
ask her how long I want to say it was.
I don't know it felt like fifteen years or something
like that. It was a long time but dominant, dominant
number one morning show for so long, and then Dorothy
(30:16):
left along with the Gillian and Steve Edwards and anxious
to catch up with her because she does have a
new podcast, so she'll tell us about that. It is
the Conway Show here on KFI. This show can be podcast.
It is podcast. You can listen to it every day.
Imagine that luxury. Just go to the iHeartRadio app and
look for Conway Show and you've got it. Mark Thompson
(30:39):
sitting in for Tim on KFI AM six forty We're
live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
Conway Show on demand on the iHeartRadio app. Now you
can always hear us live on KFI AM six forty
four to seven pm Monday through Friday, and anytime on
demand on the iHeart Radio app.
