(00:00):
It's camp I am six forty andyou're listening to The Conway Show on demand
on the iHeartRadio app. It's socool to be in the driver's seat for
another day. Is Tim Conway Juniortakes the day off? He's off all
this week. Actually, Mark Thompsonsitting in and I've got all the Conway
kids. It feels exactly the same, to be honest. You know,
(00:24):
Krozier's here of course, and SharonBellio, Lindsay's here, Steffuslicious is here,
and Elmer is training today. Veryexciting on the board. So if
there are any screw ups, wejust blame the new kid who's getting trained.
Yeah, it's all Elmer's fault. There's a luck going Oh and of
(00:47):
course Angel, the Angel of traffic. Yes, oh, yes, thank
you. More on that in abit, because I do. Actually I
encountered my own mega traffic problem thatinvolved age. More on that later.
I did want to mention that weare watching the story. It's unfolding and
it's breaking news of the moment thatthe President Joe Biden has tested positive for
(01:10):
COVID nineteen while in Las Vegas.Of all the things you could get tested
positive for in Las Vegas. COVIDnineteen is just one on the cheese Ka
factory menu of illness that you couldpick up in Las Vegas. But sadly,
this guy has picked it up.I say sadly because you know he's
(01:32):
an older man. I don't thinkCOVID is a good thing for anyone to
have, but I think older peopleit definitely hits them harder, potentially so
at eighty one, and he's keptthis sort of presidential campaign schedule, I'm
guessing that this hits him hard. They say mild symptoms is what he's experiencing.
He's vaxed and boosted. Needless tosay, But just to remind you
(01:53):
anywhere we'll watching that, I'll giveyou more as we continue. There is
news in this town. This isan entertainment town, so many creatives hatching
big stuff. And the Emmy nominationswere announced, and Jason Nathanson, ABC
News Entertainment correspondent is here to tellus more. Let me guess the bear
(02:17):
did well. Shockingly, been surprisedthat the bear such a darling of everyone.
Yeah, it's set a record twentythree nominations for a comedy series,
which is the most ever for acomedy series. Let me ask you a
question, Jason Nathanson, Please doyou watch The Bear? You must?
I do watch you? Is ita comedy series? Oh? I'm so
(02:39):
glad you asked that, because thishas been the conversation of the day for
sure, and of a long time. I have long held that it's not
a comedy series, but that doesn'treally matter when it comes to the Emmy
categories and nominations. There By,by the by the Emmy's definition of a
comedy, they the majority of therunning time of at least six episodes are
(03:04):
primarily comedic. For the comedy seriesentry, I don't even know what that
means exactly, which means you cankind of do what you want. And
it's still goes to the kind ofold school thought in this town that half
hour is a comedy in an houris a drama, right, I see,
But I would argue, and thiswas the case when I first started
(03:24):
watching Succession. I didn't really loveit, and I didn't really get it
until I heard from somebody else thatit was a comedy, and then I
started my I kind of flipped mybrain around and went, oh, it
is a comedy, and That's howI started watching it. So I would
say Succession was one of the bestcomedies that was on television, even though
it was a drama that won allthe Drama Awards. Yeah, this is
(03:46):
a really good distinction that you're making. And I'm kind of glad for this
digression because, you know, especiallyif it's somewhat controversial and people are talking
about it. It's this new categoryof drama edy, you know what I
mean, where they you don't haveto do jokes per se, or setups
per se, or even sitcom situations. Sure, somehow the funny is in
the dry humor of the characters orand so maybe that way I see it.
(04:11):
It just seems The Bear is filledwith a lot of intense moments and
absolutely, and I think, andyou're not the only one who thinks that.
I was talking earlier today with JeffSchaffer, who's the showrunner of Curb
Your Enthusiasm, one of the showsthat's up against The Bear in the comedy
category, and this is what hehad to say about whether or not The
Bear is a comedy or not.I love The Bear Bears a great show.
(04:33):
It's not a comedy, and Idon't think they think it's a comedy.
No one thinks it's a comedy,and there's a reason for that.
It's not a comedy. It's areally good drama. It doesn't make me
laugh, and it's not trying to. It's making me anxious, which it's
trying to. We're a different show. We're actually all we're trying to do
is make people laugh. We're justtrying to make the funniest show possible.
(04:54):
And he wasn't saying that to tryto sway anybody to vote for his show.
Necessarily, that's just what he feels, and you know that's I think
the feeling of a lot of people. Yeah, I agree with the Jeff
Japer one hundred percent, aside fromthe obvious aspect of it, whereas primarily
watching it, you're not laughing andit is basically a drama to watch it.
(05:14):
Is there a benefit to categorizing itas a comedy, Well, I
mean, they can win where Idon't know if it would. It would
possibly win up against a drama series, but again, it's still the thought
in this town that a drama seriesis an hour long, that it's a
little more epic in scope because theBears, it's small, just not in
(05:35):
terms of you know, how theshow's made or it's cast or anything necessarily,
but it takes place in one kindof location, right, and it's
very very focused on one thing,Whereas the bigger series that tend to win,
like a Succession or a Game ofThrones or you know, the Crown
something like that is seen to bemore sprawling. Or this year's drama Darlang
(05:58):
Showgun on f which is you know, a big it's set in the sixteen
hundreds Japanese feudal war series. Thosebig shows have a better chance of winning
the drama. So if the Bearwent up against those, would it win?
I don't know. Yeah, Sotheoretically, the idea being that if
you're gonna take the emotional strength ofa drama and make it a big fish
(06:24):
in a small pond just by labelingit as a comedy kind of But also
it's a little bit of gaming thesystem as well, right, And they
do this when it comes to shouldan actor or actress be in lead or
supporting? Should it be in thisguy? They do this for the oscars
as well. You go where youthink you have the best chance of winning.
So, like you say, dramasare dramas. I guess you could
(06:45):
make the argument the dramas are consideredthe highest level of a category of a
show. They always have been andthey remain to be. And it's the
same in the movies too. Comediesdon't do necessarily well at the Oscars.
The fact, so the fact thata drama that's labeled a comedy, it's
still a drama. But it's likeI say that that emotional strength that it
(07:05):
gives and the gravitas of the makingof it and what it is makes it
a stronger choice than the other comedicnominations, possibly unless people then feel the
same way and make right so andthat that wasn't the case last last year
(07:28):
or the last Emmys that we hadwhere it won. People did see it
that way. But as we getmore and more dramatic, and I think
season three is even the most dramatic. And by the way, this nomination
is for season two, which cameout last year, which had that really
dramatic Fishes episode with Jamie Lee Curtisright, which she got nominated four as
well. Oh yeah, well,it remains to be seen if people will
(07:49):
look at that and go, okay, it's a great show, but is
it a comedy and maybe Hacks, which is a little more funny, you
know, admittedly, is that moreof a comedy that's still really good and
can still make you tear up alittle bit here and there. That's a
great point. When you add Hacksinto it, it really does sort of
make it more interesting. I'll sayone thing. I'll take a break and
(08:11):
come back with Jason. But afriend of mine has been an awards consultant
for twenty five years. This isall she does. She recommends to studios
and to actors and to talent, etc. Talent managers exactly what categories look
best, and they do it justthe way that you sort of suggested.
They look at where there might bean opportunity to win, because they know
(08:33):
that that Emmy win and even theEmmy nomination matters in terms of profile and
viewership and all the rest. Soit really, in the end is kind
of about winning. And so thesecategories begin to take on some sort of
a weird character. But it's veryinteresting to talk to you and hear you
say, yeah, but the hourlong dramas, that's they're really the mac
(08:54):
Daddy's on the block. And soyou don't really want to get into that
pool unless you really have a big, sprawling drama tougher. Yeah, stay
where you are, please, Jason, because I know we just got off
on that bear thing and what's acomedy and what's a drama? There's way
more again the announcement of the Emmynominations today, we're watching the Joe Biden
(09:16):
story as well, as he hastested positive for COVID nineteen, so we're
following that as well. Mark Tobsonhere for Tim Conway Jr. Were KFI
AM six forty live everywhere in theiHeartRadio app. You're listening to Tim Conway
Junior on demand from KFI AM sixforty. We're talking to Jason Nathanson,
the entertainment reporter with ABC as theEmmy nominations are announced. We talked about
(09:39):
the Bear I guess you were saying, it's a record number of nominations that
that comedy series. We've already beenthrough it Is it a comedy? Is
it a drama? In any case? The series got twenty three? Is
that what you said? Twenty three? Yeah? What else? What else
was notable in the nominations in thedrama series? It's a very interesting year
because you have a lot of showsthat either are gone or just didn't have
(10:03):
time to get a new season becauseof the strike for whatever reason. You
know, successions out of the Runningright, that's gone. The Last of
Us, which did very well lastyear, did not have a new season
because the strike and probably won't untilnext year. No new season of The
White Lotus. They're working on thatright now. So that opened up for
a lot of different shows which peoplemight not have been aware of, or
(10:28):
to get their first time nominations inthe Drama series category, including Showgun as
we mentioned that's a first year seriesfor FX, had twenty five nominations,
led all the nominations. Wow didvery very well. You have Three Body
Problem, which is a Netflix showwhich came on pretty strong and then didn't
hear a whole lot about it afterwards. But that could also be because of
(10:50):
Netflix's way of just dropping the wholething at once, and you know,
if you don't talk about it afterthe first couple of weeks. Slow Horses,
which is an Apple tv PL showwhich I believe is in its third
season. It's pretty good, yeah, but that's its first time getting nominated
in the big category. There Misterand Missus Smith on Prime Video, which
a lot of people really liked. That's its first year and it's getting in
(11:11):
there. Fallout also first time firstshow, first year show on Prime Video.
Then you add a couple of standbyslike The Crown on Netflix, which
has done very well with the Emmysand could do well this year if Showgun
doesn't run away with everything. Andthen you have The Morning Show, which
keeps getting nominated for some reason, even though The Morning Show Jason, well,
(11:39):
nobody. Look, I know alot of people who like it and
a lot of people who find itinteresting. You're not one of them.
No, I watch it, andI watched the whole thing. Most people
I know who work in this businessdon't find it, you know, pretty
credible in terms of a show beingabout a network news morning show. But
(12:00):
also I think, you know,it's got a flashy cast, and usually
the Golden Globes fall for something likethat. The Emmys usually they sniff out
the quality a little more. Ithink everybody's got different tastes, right,
So, but I'm just I'm surprisedto see The Morning Show in there nominated
for Best the same thing about whatis it Palm Royal or Royal or whatever
(12:22):
it is. Yes, same thing. I would agree with that, although
I don't think I mean different,very different shows. But I'm surprised to
see Palm Royal in there. Icould not get into Palm Errele I,
you know, I couldn't like either. But but boy, Courtney loves it.
She didn't. She just couldn't getenough of it. It's a little
soapy, I guess, And Ijust didn't you know, I don't know
it. I just you know,I didn't find it as funny as I
(12:43):
wanted to. Yeah, the charactersdidn't for make track either. Yeah,
kind of like you know, it'scomedy once again, comedy in the comedy
series ketch was Hacks nominated or not? Oh yeah, no, Hacks is
nominated for Comedy Series, and thathas, like I said, the best
chance against the Bear, although Idon't think you know the Bears. Probably
it's the juggernaut right now, rightand oftentimes, especially at the Emmys,
(13:05):
these shows go on runs where theystay number one for a while. This
latest season, the reviews of ithaven't been as great as that second season,
which is the one that's you know, obviously featured here. In the
Emmys. Is could that be anothersort of factor of some little bit of
blowback, the fact that that thisthird season's already aired and we're talking about
(13:26):
awards for the second season and thethird season didn't get as much critical acclaim.
I guess it depends on how straightthe voters can keep things and if
they remember and realize that they're votingon the second season and not the third
season. So if they didn't likethe third season, don't hold it against
the second season. I love thatyou say this, because Jason, you
can remind us all that we thinkof these voters, and we think of
(13:48):
the academy. In the case ofthe Oscars, they use the word academy.
It just sounds so lofty, Butyou can remind us these voters are
like, oh, I hope thatif they can remember to keep of this,
and then there we got a bunchof guys looked like me, T
shirt jeans and we're voting on craps. Yeah. Absolutely. I mean people
you run into all around town herein Los Angeles, a lot of a
(14:09):
lot of them are emmy voters, and like all of us, including myself,
who I do this for a living, I can't keep track of all
this stuff. There are so manyshows and so many episodes. I was
I was texting with somebody who's watchingthe latest House of the Dragon on Sunday
night, and I'm like, Ithink I'm kind of stupid because I don't
(14:31):
know what's going on, don't.I don't know who this person is that
they're talking about. I don't getthis plot that they're going for. And
it's really tough to keep track ofa lot of this stuff. So if
it's tough for me, I knowit's got to be tough for you know,
the average watcher out there. Yeah. Well, I need everything explained
by Courtney. And that's because I'mbuzzed most of the time that we're watching
(14:52):
show stuff to be here, Jason, great stuff. Thank you for ironing
out a couple of controversies that lookas though they'll continue, you know,
comedy, drama, et cetera. But h dude, we didn't even get
into limited series, So that's awhole that's the whole other thing with the
baby Reindeers and things like that.Hey I'm here tomorrow, maybe we'll come
back and revisit it. I lovethat you spend a couple minutes with this.
(15:13):
Thanks Jason Natuss with ABC News Entertainment. You want to reach him,
He's at ABC News Jason. Whenwe come back, I want to update
the situation with the president. Hehas COVID. What does this mean exactly?
It happened on another day where hegets bad news. I'm not talking
about the COVID. I'm talking aboutother bad news. We'll get to that
(15:37):
as we continue. Mark Thompson herefor Tim Conway Junior or KFI AM six
forty live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on
demand from KFI AM six forty fiveeverywhere on the iHeartRadio app. Mark Thompson
here for Tim Conway Junior, whoenjoys the week off. Well, big
(15:58):
day for Joe Biden. Think hehas tested positive for COVID nineteen. More
on that and the revelations from hisown party, Adam Schiff, he's a
very high profile Democrat calling on JoeBiden to drop out of the race.
This as the RNC continues for anotherday. Each day's had a theme,
(16:22):
you know, make America wealthy again, make America secure again. I think
was one of them, and thenmake America safe and believe anyway, what
we have a connection to RNC.Now Alex Michaelson from Fox eleven is there
now. I think he's just steppedinto a hallway to speak with us for
a quick second. So Hi,Elex, I'm mark. Good to be
with you. What another news day? I mean, it's extraordinary and some
(16:45):
breaking news that just came down fromABC News that said that over the weekend,
Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader, and Hakeem Jeffries, the House
Minority Leader, went to Joe Biden, had a private with him and said
that it would be best if heresigned if he stepped down as the candidate,
not resigned, step down as thecandidate, basically asking him to drop
(17:10):
out of the race. So far, of course, the president has not
done that, but that is avery significant piece of news on the day
now that we hear from Adam Schiffasking him publicly to drop out of the
race. Adam Shiff, of course, one of Nancy Pelosi's closest allies.
Many many people think that Nancy Pelosi'sfingerprints are on that. Her office says
(17:32):
she had no idea that this ishappening, which is hard for a lot
of people to believe. But clearlythe fact that really serious players are getting
involved in this now is an indicationthat the highest levels of the Democratic Party
are now starting to push to havea different nominee, which is an extraordinary
development. It truly is. AndI wonder to what extent Joe Biden,
(17:56):
having essentially said, look, I'mstaying with this. I'm the guy who
gave you good three and a halfyears and I've beaten Donald Trump once before,
he does leave open the door tostepping down if he said this in
comments a medical situation were to arise, or if his doctors told him he'd
have to step back. So thison the day that he's tested positive for
(18:18):
COVID. If you do all themath, might that be the door through
which he can go? Is COVIDthe out? Or He's also said if
he is does not see a pathto beat Donald Trump, then he would
be willing to step aside. Andpart of the reason that these high level
Democrats are making this argument to himis they don't believe that there's a path,
(18:41):
at least not a good path forhim to win, which is why
they think they need somebody new tobe the nominee. Meanwhile, could not
be more of a contrast than whatwe're seeing here in Wisconsin. I mean,
the amount of unity in this partynow, especially after Donald Trump was
shot, is extraordinary. Uh.There is a feeling of jubilation here at
(19:03):
the Republican National Convention on the nightthat jd. Vance, the Trump's VP
pick, introduces himself to the country. So the theme I was saying,
I think each day has a theme, right, make America? Is it
make America safe again? Is thatthe theme today? I'm unclear. I
think that was the theme. Thatwas the theme yesterday. And when you
(19:23):
were saying that, I have tobe honest, I forgot you. The
theame's run together. It's true thetheme is trying together. But but but
so it'll be jd Vance the featuredspeaker tonight, and then it'll be the
former president who has been there everynight. And I have to think it's
great if you're Trump, because you'rewhy I don't blame the guy I'd be
(19:45):
in the reviewer stand. Also becauseyou get to see all of these people
who called you, uh, suicidefor America. That's what Nikki said.
Haley said, I'll vote that forTrump was suicide for America. Ron Desantas
who said, there's just no wayI like Trump, but he's passed his
he can't do the job anymore, etc. Blah blah blah. All of
them not only have to walk pastyou and gleefully shake your hand and be
(20:07):
excited, but then they speak atthe convention about how great you are.
For Trump, it just has tobe awesome. Well, and he,
of course is the most sophisticated TVproducer that's ever been president, so he
knows that if he's in the room, that he's in a you know,
it's called the two shot, wherethe box shows him and shows the speaker.
(20:27):
So the entire time that Nikki Haleyis saying that, they're showing Trump
reacting and watching her say that.Traditionally, the candidate does not come before
the final night of the convention,or maybe they make a cameo for a
second. They don't just like parkthemselves and hang out watch the speeches.
But Trump knows that what this party, what the people here love the most
(20:49):
more than any other speaker's him. Some people have said it's like a you
know, he's like a one manband where the Democrats are Mormon Ensemble act
and he knows that, you know, just like the Stones playing Satisfaction,
he knows what his audience want.Yeah, and he's playing the hits and
he's given it to him every night. What was the story with that bulldog
(21:11):
that they had on their list?I had the audio down here in the
studio. I couldn't see what itwas. Do you know what I'm talking
about? Yeah, the governor ofWest Virginia apparently has a very famous bulldog
who goes around with him, andhe was on the stage with him and
then on the floor of the convention. It was it was very strange,
(21:32):
but you know who was a goodthank thankfully, Christy Nome was nowhere to
be found. Thank you taking verywell done. And finally I saw Rudy
Giuliani and kind of an awkward pieceof video where he was kind of falling
down. I don't know if youknow, everybody assumes that he because he
likes a little drink, but Idon't know if he if that was the
(21:52):
case with him, but he wasdefinitely an awkward entrance into the hall.
Yeah. I kind of kept runninginto him in different situations throughout the week
and just on a human level.I mean, the situation with Rudy Giuliani
is just kind of sad. Youthink of him as America's mayor and how
beloved he was of the national hero. And he's quite literally fallen quite a
(22:15):
bit since then, as we sawyesterday, and he's not speaking. He's
just there kind of glad handing.I think he's doing his radio show and
appearing on podcasts and that kind ofthing. Look, I know, we
got to let you go again.Alex's stuff is on Fox eleven and you
can find his stuff obviously on thenews, but also on the Issue is.
The Issue is a great show discussingCalifornia and national politics, and it's
(22:40):
seen all over California. Alex isso cool to spend time with us.
I know it's crazy there, Sothank you, thank you so much.
The Issue Is Friday at ten thirtyis special with all this stuff all wrapped
into one. Lots of behind thescenes stuffs, Mark Okay, talk soon.
Yeah, it's a tense day onthe other side of the aisle,
(23:00):
right, celebratory RNC come together tense. On the other side, there is
a conspiracy theory already hatched about what'shappening with Joe Biden. I'll share that
with you. Next you're listening toTim Conway Junior on demand from KFI AM
(23:22):
six forty. We are watching eventsaround southern California and even the breaking news
out of Washington on this day hereat KFI AM six forty Live everywhere on
the iHeartRadio app. It's the TimConway Junior Show. Mark Thompson sitting in.
Look the news of the day andby now it's everywhere. Is that
Joe Biden has tested positive for COVIDnineteen. He was to have been hitting
(23:48):
the college circuit there in Southern Nevada. He was going to be speaking at
the property summit at the College ofSouthern Nevada in Las Vegas, and he
tested positive, according to the President'speople, and apparently he has upper respiratory
(24:14):
issues as a result, but otherwisefairly mild symptoms of COVID nineteen. I'll
remind you he's eighty one years old, and you no doubt have noted other
changes physical changes in the president throughthe years because he is eighty one.
So on this day where Adam Schiffcalls on him to drop out of the
(24:37):
race, and there were the meetingsover the weekend with high profile Democrats meeting
with President Biden and telling him thatthey think would be a good idea for
him to step back from the racecontinue as president, but to step back.
On this day, he contracts COVIDnineteen. Now, there is a
(25:02):
conspiracy theory working, and I feelas though Sharon Bellio started it. But
I might be wrong. I didn't. Well, you came in with it.
I didn't know if you hatched itor not. No, I did
not hatch it. Okay, Sohere is the Here are a couple of
the particulars that go into the conspiracytheory. And I will tell you ahead
(25:22):
of time. I don't buy inthe conspiracy theory. And I'll also tell
you ahead of time. Then I'mnot one of those people who goes,
oh, it's a conspiracy theory,Oh my god, another conspiracy theory.
That that's I generally don't subscribe toconspiracy theories. However, I'll always take
a meeting on a conspiracy theory.I'll always meet I want to hear it
because just because it's a conspiracy theory, and just because it's coming from a
(25:45):
conspiracy theorist doesn't mean that there's notreally a conspiracy. It's called due diligence,
thank you, That's exactly what it'scalled. So in this case,
they are suggesting that President Biden wasseen slowly walking up the short stairs of
Air Force one from the tarmac intothe plane after testing positive for COVID.
(26:11):
Once on the plane, he wasnot wearing a mask. It is suggested
by some conspiracy theorists looking in thatwith protocols being so strict as they are,
it would be very unusual if thepresident had COVID for him not to
(26:33):
actually be wearing a mask. Isn'tthat a basic representation of a key cornerstone
of this conspiracy? I ask you, Sharon, I'm sorry what I'm sorry?
I was listening to audio. Ah, what do you need from me?
How can I help? He's notwearing a mask, And that's what
you think. That's right, It'snot what I think. It's what people
are, Okay, conspiracy theorists think, because he's not wearing a mask,
(26:56):
yes, and because he had madethe statement that if he is the only
way that he would step out ofthe race it would be doctor if his
doctors said that there's a medical situation, and it would be better if you
stepped away. So on the verywearing a mask and he's around other people.
So yeah, right, So onthe very day that he's getting sort
(27:18):
of the peak of all of thispressure. I mentioned it over the weekend,
I mentioned Schumer today. So thiscrescendo of pressure is hitting Joe Biden,
and he comes forth with this COVIDnineteen thing. And Sharon is saying
that the conspiracy theorist who she POWsaround with, No, she does not.
She is saying also another conspiracy. She is saying that they feel as
(27:41):
though it could be concocted. Nowand on the day when you have all
the Democrats coming out, you know, suggesting he maybe it is time for
him to drop out of the raceof the race. Yes, so uh,
And again Biden has said that hewould only drop out of the race
if he has a medical condition. So this timing is weird. I don't
(28:03):
buy this as a concocted thing.I'll tell you why. It's sort of
simple. They're just, particularly onthe Democrat side, there are just too
many transparencies, and you would soquickly realize that it was a fraud.
The word could never be kept quiet. Might be another way to put it,
(28:25):
I just think you're dealing with somany leaks, and it's not party
specific. I'm just suggesting that DonaldTrump has successfully kept his medical records and
other things about various records he doesn'twant to see made public, like high
school tranship scripts, college cranscripts, existence He's really made sure that that stuff
(28:45):
hasn't gotten out. But I don'tsee that sounded that's kind of due diligence
on the Democrat side. And Iwould see, and there have been leaks
in the Trump white House when hewas president. There are plenty of leaks,
and there are plenty of leaks whenObama well was president, and there
are plenty of leaks when Joe Bidenis president. And so I'm suggesting that
with the leak numbers being what theyare, you couldn't get away with the
(29:08):
conspiracy where you literally concoct a planto say that the president has contracted COVID
nineteen. You have to get buyin from Biden to who's someone to call
him reluctant to get out of theraces, to be kind about it,
