It's KFI AM six forty and you'relistening to The Conway Show on demand on
the iHeartRadio app kf I AM sixty. It is The Conway Show. One
of our favorite guesses. Here guyrunning for Senate in the state of California.
Your ladies and gentlemen, ex Dodgerbut always bleeding Dodger blue. In

(00:20):
my book, Steve Garby, howyou buff? Hey, Tim Great oh
Man, oh Man, Hey onif you're I'm sure you're still a Dodger
fan. Absolutely, They've won fourstraight. They go sweep in Washington,
d C. That's a big deal. It is it is they struggle at
home obviously something that shocked everybody. But you know, just take the first
six weeks to June first and lookat it for what it really is.

(00:44):
And if you're the Dodgers, whatyou're doing is you have to the the
latitude to be able to bring upsome players to take give guys some more
time to heal up. And onthe il they brought up some some young
pictures. They brought up some youngoutfielder. Is one of them looks exceptional,
but you know they're not perfection. You know, there are times when

(01:06):
I think people are still settling inthe opposition is adjusting to say Autman,
who was a rookie last year, did a great job. I like that
kid. They've made adjustments to him. Now he's going to make adjustments to
them. Mookie's gone to shortstop andI think he's doing a good job,
but it's still an odd position.I think he's a better second basement.
But they have They get some greathybrid per players, so they can lose

(01:29):
three series in a row and comeback. If you look at the schedule,
who they're facing sometimes is the weaklineup. But I think that you
know when they started off the season, I think it was nineteen eighty one,
and I think you were on thatteam nineteen eighty one when but the
Dodgers that year, I think Iread this properly, only use nineteen pitchers

(01:52):
throughout that entire year, and theDodgers have already used twenty one pictures this
year, state of the times different. Now it's a littla lillium. You
know, guy said, starters areplease go five. You know, you
get through five, then we're prettymuch set up. And you know they
have obviously exceptional analytics staff metrics favoritemetrics, logarithms, and when Dave Roberts

(02:15):
gets that lineup and he gets afew pages of what could happen and if
it does, let's do this, and he gives it to Bob Ghara and
then he goes down and manages. It's just a different time. Did you
have any desire to manage? Youknow, I would have liked to have
managed for for say two years.Okay, but just give me the team,
let me manage, no obstructions, right, And it would have been
fun. It would have been funbecause you know, I'm a team builder,

(02:37):
you know, jub of fire.I'm big on culture in the clubhouse.
Are you friends. Are you stillfriends with Dusty Baker? Oh?
Absolutely so you've probably contacted him afterhe won the World Series. That was
cool to win? Oh? Absolutelyyeah. I said that's it. I
said, that's the icing on thecake. I'll be in Williamsport. Uh,
you know, Cooperstown when it happens, and uh, and it won't
happen, you know. And nowhe's you know, he he ran the

(03:00):
good race, fought the good fight. He will be in the Hall of
Fame. I think he's an advisorfor the Giants now. He lives in
Sacramento. And I'm happy for runningthe risk of sounding like I'm obsessed with
your daughter, I'm not. I'mjust thinking that maybe that Olivia, your
daughter who does sports overlap with DustyBaker in Washington. Yeah, yeah,

(03:21):
she did. He was a manager. He was a manager right. Well,
she started yeah, NBC Palm springsfor fourteen months, and then COVID
hitting and two months later there wasone job opening America and it was WABC
in Washington. That's great, andshe got it because the news director was
smart enough to see young lady whowas six foot and new sports and fun

(03:42):
and also he was a good athletelike her mother, and friends with the
manager, local manager and get thegood interviews. You know, it's about
relationships as well. But she's great. She's on Channel four now and she's
got a great personality. I don'tknow where she got that, maybe mom's
side, I don't who knows,but she's really I bet it's tough for
somebody to grow up as her dadis one of the Dodger or the Dodgers

(04:06):
star and then have to go toWashington and pretend you're a fan of the
local teams and Washington's gotta be reallytough to do. I could never do
it, oh sures. And inthe first year she would call me and
see, Dad, you know whatdo I ask this guy? Because you
remember doing COVID. So there wasa certain amount of separation and she didn't
get a chance to really meet peoplein person. But she's got that personality

(04:29):
like her mother, that can getanybody to talk. Well, that's she's
engaging and and you know, Imean, you're a great interview you know
that, And you can tee itup. And Olivia can tee it up
for the people she's interviewing because she'sbeen around. She's listened to us talk
about about personalities and success and failuresand and and what the what the most
smart thing is, and that's entertainingthe fans, representing your franchise in the

(04:53):
sport. And so she's got offto a great start. She's got great
people at the ANBC surrounding her. It's terrific. Yeah, it's an experienced
team, which is great. Yeah, and she has and she has a
lot of enthusiasm. And those arethe three keys to uh, you know,
a great sports anchor. Enthusiasm, enthusiasm, enthusiasm. That's right,
that's about a wrap. And youknow I always said, uh, you

(05:14):
know, it's it's not about you. And I gave her the honest facts
about the business. And I said, the more you can get the person
you're interviewing to reveal themselves and totalk about how they really feel and their
soul, about whether it's a sportor how they feel about life, I
said, then you're doing your joband they will come back tenfold. And
and I'm glad you brought that upbecause Jacqueline Kennedy, you're you're younger than

(05:40):
I am. You not you mightknow where's Jacqueline on NASA's I know where's
Jacqueline Kennedy. But she said,at the end of your life, it's
not how many cars you have, how many homes you have, how much
money you have, how many goldgloves or world championships. It's about how
you raise your kids. Absolutely, and and you've done a hell of a
job with these kids. Thanks. There are single grades, this currency,

(06:00):
single Greys challenge in life and runningfor Senate as well. For the kids.
The future. Now it's the grandkids. You know, we've got seven
grand kids. So but the mostimportant thing is is when it's all said
and done, and I and Isay this to my boys and to my
daughters, if they can say thatyou were a gentleman or you were a

(06:20):
lady, it's the ultimate compliment. And we don't talk about that as much
now in my campaign. We've gottenmore into civility and grace and respect for
each other. But I said thosetwo words, they're defined why God created
you in your natural state. Andwhen people do talk about my children again,

(06:40):
Cannice and I look at each otherand give each other a kiss and
say, job almost well done.Because the bottom of the contract say is
as long as you shall live.As a possibility, they were going to
come back home, right, Look, you never know when kids are going
to step off the curve. Youknow that still might happen, but for
now it's a hell of a jobraising kids. And now it's about the
Green kids. And that's you knowagain, the bottom line of why I'm

(07:02):
running is I'm running for all thepeople in California. I'm running for their
past, how they remember the state, for the present, of the challenges
they have in the future of theirof their children and grandchildren. And I'm
the only candidate. They can sayI'm running for all the people, because
everybody else has a prejudice to theparty and left or right or whatever.
It is. Sure, and Iam conservative obviously, but I'm a moderate.

(07:25):
I'd listen and our campaigns based oncommon sense and compassion, on consensus
building, unification, and over thelast week's a great example of our country
is being attacked from within. Iwent to the Hoover Institute recently and had
a chance to meet with Conda LeezaRice and her staff, and you know,

(07:47):
the opportunity to talk to General Madisonand have a session with Admiral Ellis,
who who was the captain of anuclear aircraft. Par talk about energy,
but those people are rarefied air andtalking about the state of the world.
And when they started talking about especiallythe fellow Nexticond, Liza said,
We're never more of a dangerous timethan we are now, and we never

(08:09):
have a greater opportunity than to goto our allies and say we have to
reunite, we have to stay together, we have to work together. We
have to create defensive capabilities throughout theworld so that we are deterred against our
enemies of China and Iran and Russia. So it's it's team at the end
of the day. It's team buildingagain. But it's also for myself and

(08:31):
my campaign, a way to constantlybe on top of what's happening in the
world. And I don't ever thinkthat we'll be taken over by enemies.
I'm more concerned about what's happening withinthe United States. Yeah, I think
you're right. Oh, we gonnatake a break, Jay. Steve Garvey's
with us. He's running for Senate. You can go to the website.
I think it's Steve Garvey dot comdot com. Wow, look at that

(08:54):
man, You got it. What'dyou say that was? You got it
early Steve Garvey dot com. SteveGarvey dot com will continue and talk more
about the Senate race and also theDodgers. Too bad, Losorda is not
around to give you a pep talkfor this thing. I gotta believe you're
listening to Tim Conway Junior on demandfrom kf I Am six forty by.

(09:16):
Steve Garvey is with us. Ididn't know this until this commercial break,
but that very famous blow up ofTommy Lesorda when somebody asked them about Dave
King min I've I've played that probablythirty times in my life or more,
probably hundreds of times we've played onthe show. But we don't have it
censored, and I don't have timeto edit it right now. But when
he blew up, you were Ididn't realize this. You were on the

(09:39):
Dodgers at the time. Wait, let's turn the my gun, I hear
for there we go. There yougo, yeah, there you go.
Uh, yeah, we're so DaveDave Cayman comes up in the sixth inning,
hits a home run Tyson game, top of the ninth, hits another
home ti the game. Now,the whole premise was it's day and Tom's

(10:01):
mother's being honored and he's being honoredas the first son and whatever. So
he's got to get to the CenturyPlaza after the game. After the game,
well it's a one o'clock game.And now it's the top of the
fifteenth inning and it's about five twentyand uh and I've been poking him,
you know, yeah, you pokedthe bear and I and he never liked
to drive. I said, howare you going to drive to the Century

(10:22):
Plaza? You won't get there eighto'clock in the nineties. They have a
car waiting. I said, youmean like a car you actually hire,
you have to pay money. Isaid, I can't imagine the waiting time.
He said, stop it, stopit right now, and uh.
And we finally end up losing threerun home run the Kingdom. And that's
when that infamous questioned by the youknow, the interviewer, so what do

(10:43):
you think of Dave Kingman's performance? And I happened to be walking by and
I heard what do you? AndI just scurried on by because I didn't
want to hear it. It wasa long day. The four letter words
were flying, but that's the wayit was. In the clubhouse with Tommy
was order. You know, Dannyk would come in and and Don Rickles,

(11:03):
Oh yeah sure, and Jonathan Wintersand all these guys, so you
never know, knew each homestand whowas going to come in and uh,
and Rickles would go right down theline. He had something for everybody and
uh, you get to me,and he'd look at me and he go,
I can't say anything bad about you, my son to you for a
favorite player, And then he wouldsay something like, yeah, Garby goes

(11:26):
into the charity. No I won'teven go there, so, but that
was part of uh a great timeleader port a leadership, you know,
it's part of creating a clubousk environmentand culture that allows the players to go
out and once they get between thelines, they become we and a team,
and uh, you know, maybemaybe at the end of the day,
that's why I'm running. I missedthose days of building teams and building

(11:50):
a relationship of representing the fans. You know, the single greatest currency that
that we have is our relationship withthe fans, representing the national past time
on the great Game of base Well, I've always said we're with the memory
business. So for everybody listening now, most people have a memory of going
to Dodger State or that team thatwould that epitomized that golden era, and
the guys are great Now. It'sa new millennium, new metrics, sabermetrics.

(12:13):
The guys are bigger, stronger, faster. They probably don't hit the
cutoff man as much. But thegame's the game. It's still the purest
sport, the most diverse sport inAmerica, and still the most difficult thing
probably in sports to do, isis it hit a round baseball with a
round bat and hit it squarely, and then there are eight great athletes with
big gloves and you can outrun theball. So if you successful three times

(12:39):
out of ten, you know you'remaking millions of dollars. Or if you
have a launch angle and you hitfive twenty five home runs and strike out
one hundred and eighty times, you'reprobably going to take eight million million dollars.
Yeah, but I remember back, you know, when I was watching
a lot of baseball in the seventiesand there were you know, at least
three, four or five guys thatI remember on the team that were hitting
three hundred. And I asked TimKats, who works for the Dodger station,

(13:05):
and he said, hardly anyone hitthree hundred anymore. No, because
the philosophy is get the ball inthe air. Ground balls aren't effective,
Walks aren't that effective, singles aren'tthat effective. Home runs are effective.
Yeah, home runs also put thefans in the stands. So look at
the box scorers and see if thereare more strikeouts and hits, and just
check it for two or three days. Check the dhs. See how many

(13:28):
strikeouts the DHS have. Because it'sall a philosophy on how to approach the
ball starting pitchers. Pitchers used toget paid for complete games. Sure,
they get paid for five good innings, Snap Yamamoto. I mean he's given
the team seven innings and that's reallyrare. I mean Clayton Kershaw was doing
this and you know, in hisprime. So you think the the era

(13:50):
of the complete games coming to anend or is it over? Oh?
Absolutely yeah. At one time.I think the statistic the other day was,
and this was probably fifteen years ago, that there were one hundred and
thirty complete games in baseball and lastyear they were thirteen. Wow, is
that right? So the emphasis onthat and it's probably three or four times

(14:13):
more strikeouts than there were twenty yearsago. That's unbelievable. So interest change.
All right, Steve Garvey dot Com, all we got to take a
break. I know that you're busy. You're always welcome back, always welcome
to stay if you like. Idon't. I don't think there's another guest
that I enjoy more talking to becauseI can't believe that you're sitting here in
the same room. I mean Igrew up, you know, putting on

(14:33):
my Steve Garvey Jersey my Steve Garveyjacket and driving to the stadium with my
dad as a six year old.You know, well, that was the
best of times. It was unbelievable. But quickly today we did a press
conference at park in Beverly Hills, and I think we're on our website with
the press conference today. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, right on Twitter.

(14:54):
Yeahah, I'm playing Twitter X.And I talked about political courage,
about addressing the issues that have overtakenthis country, and the prime example is
the use of colleges universities now todisciminate what essentially is terrorist remarks. And
I've always said, especially from thebeginning of my campaign, I believe in

(15:16):
Israel's defense of its sovereignty. I'vestood by him yesterday, today, and
tomorrow. And I don't think wecan ever stand next to them and tell
them what to do. Tell themthey must cease fire. And I'm asking
all of those, all the leadersin this country, to step up and
step up for Israel and they startto take back this country. Let's defend

(15:41):
our police, let's do what's right. All these people are processing. If
they're protesting is pro Hamas, thenit's terrorism hiding behind the disguise of free
speech. Yeah, it's wild outthere, but thank you for coming in
and please stop by. We'd loveto all right, Steve Garvey everybody,
Steve Garvey dot com, go awaysite, Steve Garvey dot com running for

(16:02):
Senate to represent the state of California, all forty million of us. So
Steve Garvey dot com. We're liveon for me. By the way,
when I was a kid, soI'm sorry what it was always like Superman
for me when I was It's unbelievable. One of those things. I know.
And you weren't even a Dodger fan. I was, Oh, you
were on the East Coast. Iwas a Dodge but well, you know,
it was either the Yankees of theDodgers back then. No way,
I was writing for the Yanks. That's right. They were Boroughs fan.

(16:23):
Yeah, that's right. You're listeningto Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
AM six forty. So this istoday's Today's birthday is Bellios. You know,
we always have a birthday on theshow. We got, you know,
nineteen people working on the program.A lot of the writers on the
show, we never talk about them. They're they're around, but it's it's

(16:45):
Sharon Bellio's birthday. Else something Ithought would never ever happen happened during the
commercial break, but everybody's saying happybirthday. Aaron was kind enough to go
out and get all the decorations. She got here early, so Aaron,
ben Mosch or Cooper, whatever itis nowadays, I thank you for decorating

(17:08):
the whole joint. And then duringthe commercial break we all sang Happy birthday
to Sharon Bellio. And Chris Little, the news director, got here a
little late, got late to theparty, so he came in and Sharon
said, oh, Chris, youmissed the Happy birthday, and he said,
can we do it again? AndBelly said, well, Chris,

(17:29):
maybe you can do a solo asbutch Padasik, which is one of the
characters he does for improv, Andhe did it. He sang as a
character, and then Bellio said, why don't you do it as Paul Padossik,
And Chris looks at Belly and goes, that was Paul Padoik. I

(17:55):
would have never guessed that that wouldhappen at a news station, that the
news director who does improv does acharacter to sing Happy Birthday to one of
the producers and then the producer says, oh, do it in this character,
and he says, that was thatcharacter. That is rich. That
is unbelievable. Isn't that wild? That was That was a very special moment.

(18:22):
That was. But it's so muchdifferent from his brother Paul. I
should have known. Yeah, happybirthday, little buddy. Thank you so
much, and thank you for atim baked cupcakes delicious, like super voiced.
And there's little microphones. Yes,that's kind of cute. My wife

(18:45):
made the microphones. She decorated themwith the seasoning or what the dressing.
What is it that would sprinkles.Yeah, she put the frosting and sprinkles
on. I baked them and thenI got the box to put in.
They came in a nice box.Honestly, I thought you bought them.
No no, no, no,no no no. But then when I
saw the microphones, who has littlemicrophone? That's right, And because you're

(19:07):
in you're in radio, so Iput microphone. Oh yeah, oh I
thought they were just toothpicks. Nono, no, no, I mean
I mean if you take the microphoneoff, yes, it is a toothpicker
use for that purpose. But belly, I wish you a happy birthday.
You deserve it. Thank you somuch, and honestly, thanks to everyone.
Everyone went out of their way.And yes, happy birthday, Belly.

(19:29):
I'm glad you're not a third grader. Oh so that you take your
birthday off? You know people don't. Don't third graders do that? Well,
I thought about it, but thenI remembered you. I think people
who do that are like third graders. And they didn't want you to drag
me, so I came in,Belly, Please, let's go to Channel
four. Here, the ocean sidepier is on fire. Oh they just

(19:52):
went off it. Okay, theocean side pier is on fire. And
that's a big story. That's abig beautiful peer in the downtown ocean Side
area. We have a big audiencewho listens down in ocean Side and it's
awful to see that, you know, that beautiful peer go up in flames.

(20:14):
There's a couple of fireboats out theretrying to put it out, but
it's a very aggressive fire. Obviously, the pier is made of all all
made of wood and so it spreadsquickly. But the ocean side pier is
you know, they make all theirmoney or most of their money in the
summer, and to have that peerburned down before summer is horrible for the

(20:36):
economy there as well. So we'regoing to keep an eye on that.
The ocean Side pier is on fireand we're going to find out more when
we come back. But that's abig story. You're listening to Tim Conway
Junior on Demya from KFI A sixforty Happy birthday to Sharon Bellam, and

(20:56):
we have bad news coming out ofocean Side, breaking news out of ocean
Side. The pier is on fire. So if you live in ocean Side,
you're wondering where all that smoke iscoming from. Well you're probably not
wonder You probably know it's from thepier. It's on fire. Breaking news
to get to look at this. This is an ocean side there's this is
where Ruby's Dieter used to be.It's a band of building. But this

(21:19):
fire started around three o'clock. They'retrying to hit this mainly Rubies. Wasn't
Rubies in Huntington Beach. Wasn't therea Rubies? There was a Rubies in
Seal Beach or Seal Beach had aRuby's. Huntington beach did too us Did
they have a ruby? Was thatrubies? I know? God, who
had the rubies? Now I'm tryingto think was the Seal Beach had the

(21:42):
rubies? I think it was SealBeach that had rubies And then there was
one that closed on ocean side andand you know what, how bet happened?
People ate at rubies and their opinionafter rubies was, I guess it's
okay for peer food thinks so too. You know. I remember when I
came out here in my and myex. It took me out. She

(22:04):
was a big fan of the beachand we was like, Oh, there's
a diner at the end of thepier that's really cool. And then it
was like I walked in there,I was like, rubies, all right?
How many times do you think themad or d heard this when somebody
walked in d yeah? Well,or the hosts, the hostess, how
many times she heard this when shewhen people walked in, Oh, it's

(22:25):
uh, it's rubies. Oh it'soh, it's rubies rubies. Have you
ever read balbo a Peer was theoriginal still Ston Beach Pier and it closed
in twenty twenty one. It's toobad. But the original was at Balbo.
Appear that one's still there. Youknow what I think wiped them out?

(22:48):
Uh? Really poor food? Isthat what it was? Sorry?
Too rough day from Rubies soon coatthat a little. There were locations just
as Sharon said, Huntington Beach. There was also Malibu Ocean Side and Seal
Beach. Yeah, Ruby's was.Look, I don't know, I'm you

(23:10):
know, I'm my in my fifthdecade, and I don't know anybody who
said, oh, I can't waitto get the rubies. Do you know
anybody you know? Anybody had said, oh my god, if I don't
get rubies before I leave California,it's not a trip to California. Has
anyone ever said that? No,not a single person. I used to

(23:32):
go to the Rubies in Irvine untilit closed. Really yeah, I said.
In the and the twenty tens, they experimented with converting some of the
locations, including to spash casual location. I remember there was one in Victoria
Gardens out in Ontario area. Iwent to the one with my girlfriend.
I guess it was out Huntington Beach. Other it was Seal Beach, but
I thought it was just okay, you know, the burger was okay,

(23:53):
the fries were okay, the coachwas okay. There's nothing special about it
though. In Victoria Gardens, Ithink it just closed down a few years
ago. They that was actually reallygood, real and crowded. I loved
breakfast at Ruby's Rubies. Yeah, yeah, I think the name kind of
got them too. Nobody knows whatthat is Rubies, you know, I
don't know. It's like a namethat nobody's you know, has gone apparently.

(24:17):
Locations in Atlantic City and Las VegasAirport. Whoa Vegas airport. There's
a there's there's a discriminating crowd.Which percentage people are the ones that just
got there or are leaving when yougot no do left? That's great?

(24:37):
Oh wow, we're still We're stillin the Vegas airport. Wow? And
what is that de La fought? What's the odor in that airport? It's
it's a million nervous stomachs, thetoilet. It's people who didn't eat well
over the weekend and lost their mortgage. So it's a lot of nervous people
and they blow those farts right intothose waiting oceans at the airport. Bang.

(25:02):
Yeah, thanks for Covin that's thetwenty five cent hot dog. You're
smelling the one in the water, the one in the warm water. Do
you want one that's floating, theone in the bottom. Wow, I
didn't know you guys had so manychoices. Hey, we believe in variety.

(25:29):
What is this place called Ruby's Junior. It's an offshoot of Rubies.
Wow, that's why nobody hated it. It sounds too much like it's short
for Rebella. I thought she's gotrubies. Oh Christ, Okay, Yeah,

(25:56):
this is a nice cu but shedon't think she's gonna be okay.
It says you got Rebella Christ?Where? Uh, never mind rubies?
Did you get the floater or thesinker? My doctors said floaters aren't goodn't

(26:19):
talk about hot talks. I hateto interrupt this. We have we just
lost it. Shooting investigation in Anaheim. Oh the Debbie Downers here. I
apologize. I know you guys were, Oh my god, and it was
it was fantastic. Thank you.Where was the shooting? It's Anaheim,

(26:41):
Anaheim. Sorry, didn't they haveone last week? Yeah? They sure
did have another one. Yeah that'snot good, you know, coming on
coming up on summer season and twoshootings in a week. And Anaheim,
they gotta get that together. What'sgoing on in Anaheim? But there's that
they're shooting. I thought Anaheim, you go there, there's Disneyland. Everyone

(27:02):
enjoys themselves. Why are people shooting? Who's shooting? Who's shooting? I
want to know? All right,we have a lot to go over.
The first hour we had Steve Garveywas great. I think he's uh,
he's what a terrific guy, areal true gentleman and Belly. I don't
know if you know this, buthis daughter, Olivia Garvey is the sportscaster
for ENDBC News. I did notknow that. Yeah, that is cool.

(27:25):
You can see every night belting thosescores out and talking to athletes.
Oh good for her. Yeah, she's great, terrific. Yeah, and
so she's on Channel four every night. And then we all went to bed
last night thinking about USC and hopingthat that you know, doesn't repeat.
But guess where it's gonna repeat.I guess where the next stop is for

(27:47):
lapd U c l A. Yep. UCLA has their own little community now
that has all the protesters, andthey blocked it off. So you know,
normal citizens, public can't get itin there. And that's a I

to come down, and will LAPDhave to do it. I don't know,

community and the tents and the protesters. That's not what this is all about.
