Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's KFI AM six forty and you're listening to the
Conway Show on demand on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
KFI AM six forty. Wow, that's great start. It's Conway here. Yeah,
back with I think I'm better, but who knows? All right,
Michael Monks's weathers Monks? How you bubb I'm doing well?
Busy da in La Man, Yeah, crazy day to come back.
I watched the raids all day long in downtown Los Angeles.
I don't know what they were about, but I'm sure
(00:29):
you has more information on it. I don't know if
it was FBI atf Immigration, what do you know? What
do you say?
Speaker 3 (00:34):
It looks like the answer to that is yes, yes, yes,
multiple federal agencies involved here. Unclear exactly how many people
they got, but it seems to be in the dozens. We're,
of course talking about immigration enforcement that took place at
multiple sites near downtown Los Angeles, Westlake Fashion District and
then South LA and some pretty dramatic scenes unfolding, particularly
(00:57):
in the fashion districteloved.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
I was watching it today around one thirty on KTLA
and it was nothing. It was just people outside of
a clothing you know, manufacturer and they're putting people in vans,
and there was a couple of people protesting, and then
once the white vans left, they nearly ran over a
guy because there wasn't LAPD wasn't anywhere around.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
What you're seeing is the fast action of the people
who oppose this type of enforcement because they have a
system in place to call out as many as possible,
to turn these sites and to disrupt the activity. And
because of LA's sanctuary city status and a long standing
policy by the LAPD, they're usually not directly involved in
(01:38):
the work that the feds are doing, right, but they
are there in sort of an auxiliary capacity. So they
weren't today. They were there, but they were not in
the middle of it. They weren't there today. Once they
get down to the streets, these feds get on the streets,
LAPD's got to be there because they're the best. They
know the streets, they know the people, they know how
to keep it quiet, they know how to keep people calm.
And a guy was nearly run over today by a band.
(02:00):
Another guy in a scooter's run over, his scooters run
over by one of those big trucks, and it could
have been it could have been we could have seen
two people die live on TV. Yeah, and what happens
in those jurisdictional battles because that is the city of
Los Angeles, But this is a federal agency executing their
own warrants or their own investigation.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
So who's in charge, right, But once the it spills
onto the street, LAPD has got to be there. I
understand that Jim McDonald, you know, elected by mayor baths is,
you know, he wants to do the right thing and
he wants to you know, say, LAPD is not gonna
be involved. But the guys on the streets, you could
tell LAPD was buzzing around just waiting to get in
(02:38):
to get the call to go help these guys out.
They those are their brothers and sisters in there being
pummeled by these people.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
They definitely had air support. There were multiple LAPD helicopters
that were circling above. We saw those in the broadcast.
We were getting calls from from listeners who were telling
us what they were seeing, and that included witnessing LAPD helicopters.
But also when the scene in the Fashion District cleared
after the Feds had gathered whoever it was, they felt
they needed from that scene, pushed off the demonstrators to
(03:04):
the side and started to leave. That's when you saw
the LAPED cruisers kind of descend and finish dispersing that site.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Right, But they got there too late, they got their
way too late.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Well, I do, I do believe that they are on
the periphery during the actual enforcement action, so they're nearby.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Right, But they got to be closer. They got to
be closer. There's way too to your buddy, Jim, Jim
has got to realize that the times have change because politicians. Look,
I don't blame the people who are working in these
factories and the people who came to this country. I
don't blame that at all. I blame the politicians who've
effing lied to these people for forty years saying, come
into this country, have a family, get a job, we
(03:44):
won't hassle you, we'll protect you, we'll take care of you,
and all the while yelling and lying to their faces
that they'll be okay in this country. And meanwhile, the law,
the federal laws, still says if you're illegal in this country,
you've got to go.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
And we know that this is an administration in the
White House that was elected on this issue in a
lot of ways. I mean there were other issues, certainly,
but ran hard on this issue. And we have heard
national reporting indicating that they want to ramp up the
enforcement effort. Three thousand arrests a day is what they
want because they've not been hitting that number. And places
like Los Angeles, which claim to offer sanctuary as you're
(04:20):
noting to folks who are here illegally. I think got
a bit of a wake up call today because this
was not just a one off. We've seen some one
offs here, and it started as a one off, it
seemed this morning in Westlake at the home depot where
a few guys maybe looking for day work were picked up.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
So we were keeping an eye on that.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
But by the time it moved to the Fashion district
and this same company was also hit in South LA
by these federal enforcement agents. This was something bigger Michael
Monks's Weathers.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
The politicians for the last thirty forty or fifty years
have said to these people again, come into this country,
we'll take care of you, we'll protect you, when legally
they didn't have the authority to do it, and they
made billions and billions of dollars off of them to
line their own pockets because they got money from the Feds,
they got money from the state, money from the county,
money from the city to help with the immigration and
help the services for these people. Even though they knew
(05:08):
that this day was coming. They told them, have a family,
go to school, have a job, you know, enjoy yourself here.
And they knew it in the back of their mind
that this day was coming. And I would be pissed
at those politicians for screwing those people over.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
And this is just maybe a few dozen people that
were impacted today. When you think of the number of
people who are here in this community illegally, it's a
number far greater than that.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
So what sure the next steps look like.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
You have US attorney in place, who is obviously selected
by the Trump administration, who is much more favorable to
them in these types of efforts, and you have federal
agencies that are willing to buck the city's sanctuary status,
ready to create that hostility that the city is also
created right by declaring them the sanctuary city. Right, I
think the federal government is saying to la, Okay, we
see you, let's do this.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Right.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
They declared the sanctuary city, sanctuary state, sanctuary county, whatever
it is, and that doesn't mean anything. It means nothing.
It doesn't trump federal law.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
It only means that local resources won't be used, such
as the LAPD and most enforcement cases unless court ordered,
unless there's a warrant on something like that. There was
a warrant reportedly in the Fashion District today for illegal
immigration and people harboring illegal immigrants.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Right, But the LAPD has to understand that, you know,
this summer is going to be hotter than hell in LA.
There's gonna be a lot of this going on. It's
going to be one hundred and five degrees. People are pissed,
people are broke, everything's expensive. Gas is going to go up.
There's gonna be unrest on the streets in LA this summer.
An LAPD, if they call the Feds to help them out,
they don't want the same thing that they gave the FEDS,
(06:40):
which was nothing. You know, when they call the Fed
and saying, hey, there's a million people rioting in LA,
could you help us out? And Trump and the Federal
and the FEDS will say, well, you didn't help us out, FU,
You're on your own.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
That's the risk that this city runs. You don't think
President Trump would say something like that, it's on its way.
It's on its way.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
Donald Trump is a very vindictive guy, and when LAPD
calls up to have the FEDS help him out this summer,
when this town is on fire, he's gonna say, fu,
you're on your own.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
If you're trying to hit the numbers that this administration
in the White House wants to hit, you got to
hit big enclaves of illegal immigrants, and Los Angeles has
certainly ground zero for that.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Okay, can you stay with us. There's a huge story
went on all day in downtown Los Angeles. A big
raid went on and I think it's ambience is. I
don't know what that is. Clothing company.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
It's a clothing company that has a presence in the
Fashion district and apparently maybe a headquarters or some other
or operation in South LA.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
And this raid was huge. There were dozens of people
taken out, The Feds were all over it. LAPD was
nowhere in sight. And then there was a you know,
a group of a couple hundred people surrounding it and
it got out of control. A guy almost got run
over by a van another guy in a scooter almost
got run over by one of those heavy trucks. Both
(07:55):
of them could have died and we could have had
a huge, huge mayhem on the streets. But this, it's
just the This is just the precursor. This is going
to be happening all day all all summer and when
it gets hot and hotter in hell this summer, this
is going to cause a tremendous amount of rest or
a riot this summer in Los Angeles and LAPD they
got to be prepared for that.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI Am.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Sixty Conway showing a great day to come back. The
city is blown up here in Los Angeles. Michael Monks
is with us. The raids that happened today were I've
never seen anything like that in LA I've never seen
you know, fed's being you know, having come in, raided
(08:40):
a factory, taken two dozen people away, and then go
on to the streets and the streets were blocked once
the white vans left, the people on the streets blocked
the streets with a truck and four cars and the
Feds couldn't get out of there. They were trapped and
LAPD was nowhere in sight. That's right.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
I mean, it's it's clear what role LAPD plays in
these things. We know they're not supposed to assist the
immigration enforcement, but what role do they play in sort
of the ancillary activities that take place. Because once these
activists got word of the raids taking place in the locations,
they have a fast acting network and they will go
to where they are told to go to be as
(09:21):
disruptive as possible.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
And we saw how quickly that happened.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
They got about a couple dozen people down to the
fashion district in short order.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
We have to help disrupt these these and there must
have been at the at the end a couple of
hundred people around them. Yeah, and it could have gotten bad.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
These raids started as the city Council was meeting today,
so like they were celebrating Pride Month, they had a
drag show in the council chamber and everything. It was
a relatively festive occasion. But by the time the meeting
reached its conclusion, they had a drag show where in
the council meeting today Jesus Christ. Yeah, so they had
(10:05):
the drag show at the council meeting today.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
But by the time the meeting got.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
To the end, what happened, The gravity of the situation
that was happening in this self declared, self voted sanctuary
city had become clear. Steph has the sound. This is
council woman Unisses Hernandez talking at the end of the meeting.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
Okay, hold them on second before we play this. Yeah,
the raids are going on. The Feds are here. Yeah,
LAPD is not helping them out. Craziness on the streets,
and there's a drag show, drag show at city council.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
In the middle of the in the middle of the
rotunda or in the middle of the chamber, I should say,
Jesus Christ, Yeah, how is.
Speaker 6 (10:47):
A sanctuary city? And we've made it clear that we
will not cooperate and use our resources for ice in
federal immigration enforcement. But that doesn't stop them from showing up.
And now we're seeing their tactics quickly escalate. They're swooping
in fast, without warning and leaving justice quickly. They don't
hang around because they know we mobilize. Our resistance is working,
and that's exactly why they have elevated their approach and
(11:07):
changing their.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Approach so when you hear those words, I think it
lends credence to what you were saying. And before we
went to break that things could get a little rocky
here when you have increased enforcement, when you see more raids,
this may just be the beginning. This was relatively small
compared to the number of illegal immigrants that we know
live in LA and LA County, but these are activists
(11:28):
that are are ready to do whatever they can to
disrupt this enforcement effort.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Now, they asked Jim McDonald did he know of it?
You know, was he aware of it? And he sort of,
you know, I don't really know. I'm sure we've been
there's word on the street or whatever, and he sort
of dodged that question. Did he know that this was
going on?
Speaker 3 (11:47):
I think that the LAPD has to know when something
like this is taking place, because again, they do perform
some peripheral work. They don't do the enforcement, but they
do patrol sort of around.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
They all, right, here's the audio of Jim McDonald and
what he knew and when he knew it. Jim, tell
me if you knew any about any of.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
The raids that were happening today, were you given a
heads up by the federal government, and what's your take
on everything?
Speaker 7 (12:12):
Now you know we have clear lines of what we
do and don't do. The federal government was doing a
number of different arrests at different locations today. We became
aware of that this morning that it was happening. We
had heard rumors for some time that it may happen,
but for the last month or two because we watch
what happened in other cities. But I just want to
(12:34):
get across to the public that our goal is to
stick with the policy we've had for over forty five years,
which is we don't engage in civil immigration enforcement. The
situation here didn't affect civil immigration enforcement on our part.
Our officers responded to a call for help, which is
a high priority call. We would do that for anyone.
(12:56):
They responded in mass because that's how these calls are handled.
They got there and their goal was to separate any
protesters from the agents. In this case, it would be
any situation. They would respond, try and find out who
the adversarial positions are and quit a skirmish line between
them to keep them apart so that nobody gets hurt.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
Okay, a little late, but they eventually got there. But
I think next time. I think they've got to get
there quicker.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Here's what Mayor Bass has to say about the raids today.
This is a statement. This morning, we receive reports blah
blah blah. As mayor of a proud city of immigrants
who contribute to our city in so many ways, I
am deeply angered by what has taken place. These tactics
so tear in our communities and disrupt basic principles of
safety in our city. My office is in close coordination
(13:45):
with immigrant rights community organizations.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
We will not stand for this. Okay, What did she
mean by that they won't stand for this? Are they
going to block the FEDS from coming into la I
don't know.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
I mean that's going to be a great follow up
question for us to ask the mayor when we chance
to interview another liar.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
She says, we.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
Will not stand for this, and you heard what the
councilwoman said moments ago. So and Supervisor Lindsay Horvath has
also sent out a statement. She says that today's ice
raids were acts of cruelty and bigotry, targeting our immigrant
neighbors and tearing families apart the design to still excuse me,
and still fear in communities of color. But we will
not be intimidated and we will not be silent.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
Okay, Mayor Baths is another politician who has made money
off the backs of people here illegally, and she's promised
them a sanctuary city, promised them, you know, if you
can use the schools, you can use the hospitals, nothing
will ever happen to you. I promise nothing will ever
happen to you. And she doesn't have anything to back
that up. She because she doesn't understand. Either she's lying
(14:47):
or she's dumb, because she doesn't understand that she can't
override the federal law in this country.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
You talked about the vindictive nature of the president. We
know that's true. I mean that's not being partisan or anything.
I mean we know his nature and he loves a
good fight. When the city, the local communities, the local
governments take a fight to the White House, do they
not think there's going to be a fight in return.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
Oh, it's unbelieving.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
I mean, if you watch the last twenty four hours,
he's fighting with Elon Musk, who was his best friend
two months ago. I mean, this could turn ugly very quickly.
And you could see local elected officials face some legal consequences.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
And then we all pay for it by the unrest.
It's going to happen this summer in Los Angeles. There
are going to be riots in Los Angeles this summer.
You might want to broadcast remotely. Yeah, there's gonna be
and we're all gonna pay for it. There'll be buildings
on fire, there'll be people being shot, they'll be people
being run over, there'll be people being killed. It's gonna
happen in LA this summer. This is just the beginning
(15:46):
of it. And because the politicians in this city can't
control it and don't want to control it, everyone's going
to pay for it.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
Well, they do want to control it, and that's what
I think is going to help maybe escalate what you're
warning about here is I mean this, We will not
stand for this. That's a quote from the mayor. Right,
But what does that mean?
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Right? Nothing? She can't, she doesn't have She can't protect anybody,
and she knows that and she lies to everybody saying
she can, and she certainly can. But I appreciate Co'm
always a pleasure. All right, great day to come back.
Speaker 5 (16:19):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
AM six forty.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
There's a lot of raids going on in downtown Los Angeles,
and with more information on that is Alex Michaelson. How
you bob ding dong with you? Ding dong with you, buddy?
What's going on in downtown LA.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
Well, I mean, you're seeing this conflict that we've been
assuming would come at some point since Donald Trump was
re elected as president of the United States. You've got
two very different views of immigration and of laws. The
Trump administration basically saying that it is illegal to be
an illegal immigrant, and they are trying to stop people
(17:05):
from doing that and send a very clear message to
people that that's not okay. There are a lot of
folks in downtown LA who do not think that it
should be illegal to be an illegal immigrant, right, and
they are offended at the concept of enforcing some of
these laws that have been on the books for many years.
(17:26):
We do know that what a lot of the folks
in the Trump administration said is that they would go after,
you know, sort of the hardened criminals first. This may
be going farther than that. We still need to get
more information of exactly what's going on, But I don't
think it's going to be the last time we see
something like this, and we could see more of this
throughout the weekend.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
Yeah, it's I think it's gonna be a crazy summer.
I think this is going to continue it and where
and mere Bass said, we're not going to tolerate this.
What does that mean?
Speaker 4 (17:57):
Right? And then on the same day, you know, there's
this fight that happening between the state of California and
the Trump administration over President Trump's threats to withdraw federal
funding because of some of these transgender sports issues, saying
that California is not going to get the money from
the federal government. And today Governor Newsom and also the
(18:17):
Speaker of the Assembly, Robert Rives, will floating the idea
that maybe California will not pay its tax dollars to
the federal government, which is something I've never heard of before. Basically,
they're arguing that California is a donor state, meaning we
spent give more money to the federal government than we
take back that they see is their leverage. But that
(18:37):
would be kind of an unprecedented ramping up of the
conflicts between California and the federal government and ultimately none.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
Of us is good, really.
Speaker 4 (18:50):
Not good for the citizens of California to be caught
in the middle of this. And as we know, you know,
Donald Trump, when you make him angry, usually tends to
lash out. So being the ones that are you know,
potentially targets of his frustration is also not a good
place to be, right But.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Let's get back to what mayor bas uh what when
when she said we're not going to tolerate this, does
she mean that we're that the people on the street
that she's supporting, the people that were throwing crap at
the FEDS and the FBI and Homeland Security.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
I don't think that's what she means, And if you
asked her to clarify that, I can't imagine that she
would say that that's what she means. But I think
it is questionable what exactly does that mean? Though we're
not going to tolerate this, I mean, we know that
the local authorities are not are not coordinating or cooperating
with the federal authorities on much of this. That's part
(19:43):
of their sanctuary state and sanctuary city policy. But ultimately
there is a law, you know, and if you're in
violation of the law, and a lot of liberals when
Trump was on trial kept saying the phrase, no one
is above the law. There is a law in terms
of immigration here, and if you knowingly come to this
country without documentation and for years, that is the risk
(20:07):
that you run that this could happen to you. At
some point, I think there was a lot of feeling
for a lot of people that it wasn't going to
happen to them ever, But now you know that this
may be, you know, an enforcement of that. Now what
we don't know also, is it possible that the Trump
administration goes too far. And there's been questions about due
process and making sure that the people that they're targeting
(20:28):
actually are in violation of the law, and that's a
part of this process too, and questioning, you know, what's
really going on.
Speaker 2 (20:38):
Doesn't it seem like this is this is setting up
to be a horrible summer in Los Angeles.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
Not only in Los Angeles but around the country. I mean,
we're not the only big city with this sort of challenge,
but we know we have a tremendous amount of I mean,
in the state of California, seventeen percent of the state
is undocumented seventeen percent, and that the part that we
know of. There may be more that we don't even
know of because by being undocumented, some of them, you know,
go out of their way not to be counted and stuff. Sure,
(21:08):
so that's a huge, huge impact on so many of
our businesses and our schools and so much of what
happens here. And I think we're, yeah, we're set up
for a real sort of seismic event this summer. Hopefully
we don't actually have an earthquake too, which was right, which.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
We wouldn't be able to handle.
Speaker 4 (21:25):
But I mean, but you know, this, this this battle
that so far really hasn't been that dramatic between California
and the federal government seems to really be ramping up
in the last few days.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
Here's how I see it. For the last forty or
fifty years, politicians have been telling people who have moved
here legally, you can use the schools, the helicopter, I mean,
the hospitals you can, you know, will have benefits for you.
Don't worry about being thrown out of the country, I don't,
you know, go ahead and have kids, you know, raise
(21:55):
a family. Will protect you. We'll protect you we'll protect you.
And it was all a lie because the local officials,
mayor baths, the city council, the local you know, locally
elected state officials, they have no say when it comes
to federal law. They've lied to these people for forty
years to make money off their bags because they knew
they could get extra money from the federal government to
(22:18):
help out with the legal immigration. And they lied to
these people and lied to these people and lied to
them to make money off their backs. And now there
and now they're watching the end result of this. And
it was going to come, whether it was ten years ago,
twenty years ago, or twenty years from now, it was
going to happen.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
Unless they were able to do you know, actual comprehensive
immigration reform from the federal government. But that just hasn't
happened in forty years. I mean, you know, Reagan forty
years ago gave a lot of those people amnesty and
he did protect them. And you know they.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
Why didn't they get acratic party? Why didn't they do it?
Speaker 4 (22:53):
Because because there wasn't a political will. I mean, the
Democratic Party had one opportunity in the last thirty years
with Obama. Barack Obama was elected with sixty votes in
the Senate, and he had a big majority in the House,
and he could have done comprehensive immigration reform, and they
chose to do Obamacare instead, and they put all their
chips in on that, and they basically kind of left
(23:14):
the immigrants behind.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
And that's all in history. So they aft the immigrants
over again in that moment, they did. And but awesome,
And so why isn't directed towards But why isn't the
anger directed more towards the people who lied to him
for forty years as opposed to Donald Trump?
Speaker 4 (23:32):
I think, I think there's some anger to go around.
But I mean, if we're going back in history too,
there were many moments, including when George W. Bush was
president and wanted to do comprehensive immigration reform and Republicans
stopped it.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
Right, But that was never a main plank in the
platform of the Republican Party and it always has been
in the Democratic Party. So that's their base.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
That is a big part of their base. Yes, I mean,
it was something that Bush talked about priority and I
was there in Washington at the time, and the Republican
base went nuts.
Speaker 2 (24:05):
Right, I would be to do this if if if
I was here illegally, that the Democrats have lied to
me all these years and now they're not protecting me at.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
All, Well, there's not much that they can do to
really protect them. I mean, we'll see, we'll see, because
they're going to try.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
But again, when Mayor Bass says, you know, we're not
going to tolerate this, I'd love to have her define what.
Speaker 4 (24:25):
That means, right and I And one thing I've also asked,
and I asked this to Senator Padia and others when
they say a lot of these folks deserve due process,
what exactly does that mean? What does do process look like? Specifically?
Is that a trial for each person? Is that you know,
how does that work? And the other thing that really
we could use as a country, which I think should
(24:47):
be a bipartisan thing, is we need to invest in
our in our immigration courts and judges so that people
do have an opportunity for hearings if they need it,
not years down the road. I mean, the whole immigration
system doesn't make any and it may you understand why
people who are really really in dire need maybe come
here illegally because they think that's their only option. Because
(25:07):
there aren't a lot of other options for them, and
so there needs to be a look at the entire system.
That being said, if you do come here illegally, that
is the risk that you run and people. You know,
this is kind of like the rents come and do
for some of these people.
Speaker 2 (25:23):
Yeah, what's on the big show night?
Speaker 4 (25:24):
The issue is, we actually have a encore presentation of
a conversation with Jamie Diamond from a few weeks so.
I spent the week in Austria this week. I just
got back late last night. I was with Arnold Schwarzenegger
in Austria at his global summit there shooting this incredible
half hour special which is going to come next week.
On the issue is, so we've got to talk about
(25:46):
It's really there's something there to talk about next week. Excellent,
funnyly hopefully get kind of connected.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
I appreciate you coming on.
Speaker 5 (25:53):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
AM six forty.
Speaker 2 (26:00):
The big story is the ice raids downtown Los Angeles.
Everyone's got to be aware of them, right. Usually we
have fun on Friday, not heavy news, but it's crazy
downtown and you've got to be aware of what's going on,
because this is going to affect your summer and next
year and next summer and the following summer. It's going
to be a long ride. And you have to be
(26:21):
aware of what's going on in downtown LA. Who's on
whose side, Where's lapd Stam, where's Mayor bas, s CiU president.
All of this information has got to be You've got
to be aware of it. You know, when when you
go to downtown Los Angeles, it's it's it's different than
it was before, and it's gonna be different from a
(26:42):
long time, especially this summer when it gets hot in LA,
it's going to be a mess. So here's Mayor Bass
talking about the SEIU president, David Wheret, and he was arrested.
I don't understand why they arrested this guy. Maybe she
can tell us here.
Speaker 8 (27:00):
Guerta was injured during one of the during some of
the chaos happening earlier today, I'm joined with Mayor Karen Bass.
She just spoke with him, and I'd like to ask
her a few questions about that interaction. Tell me how
is he doing right now?
Speaker 9 (27:13):
Well, I mean he is doing okay physically, but I
know what really impacted him the most was the emotional
trauma of watching parents and kids being separated. There were
young children that were there that witnessed their parents being
taken into custody, and I think that hit him emotionally
very hard. He is being detained by ICE right now.
(27:36):
He's going to go into ICE custody and we hope
to get him out very soon. I don't know the
reason why he's being detained.
Speaker 2 (27:43):
It's odd that he's in ICE custody. Why would he
be in ICE custody?
Speaker 9 (27:46):
I don't know, But the point is of what happened
today was just outrageous.
Speaker 2 (27:52):
And what was she talking about the arrests or the
mob outside, I can't.
Speaker 9 (27:58):
Tell, But the point is of what happened today was
just outrageous.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
Can't tell what she's outraged about about her lack of
I've able, her inability to run the city. Maybe that's
part of it.
Speaker 9 (28:14):
And what worries me the most is the sense of
terror that it creates within the community. For example, the
raid that happened this morning at home depot, where what
I hear is that ICE agents were literally chasing people
before they captured them. And then tonight there's a graduation
a high school graduation right nearby those parents? Do that?
(28:35):
Do I go to the graduation? Am I going to
be saved? Am I going to be arrested? It's the
type of fear and chaos that happens with these type raids,
and it's just completely outrageous and unacceptable.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
Okay, this is the same crew that has told everybody
for forty years this is a sanctuary city and that
doesn't mean anything on a federal level. These people have
lied to these immigrants, these illegal immigrants, for decades, decades.
Speaker 8 (29:02):
What's your message to Angelino's who see this happening in
their city in a state that we believed SB fifty
four had created a sanctuary state.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
Ah, Okay, now we're getting to the truth, right. Everybody
believed that they voted to protect the illegal immigrants in
the state of California, and the state officials in California
lied to you and said, oh no, if you vote
for this, they'll be protected. And they knew that federal
law trump that, and they lied to you. Anyway, if
(29:32):
I was here illegally, I'd be really really pissed at
people who've been lying to me for forty years telling
me to raise a family you're going to be Okay,
nothing's going to happen. And they knew it was a lie.
They knew it was a huge lie.
Speaker 8 (29:44):
Four had created a sanctuary state, right exactly.
Speaker 2 (29:48):
My message to them, okay, now here's where she'll pump
for realm. My message to them is, well, we lied
to you and now it's over.
Speaker 9 (29:57):
My message to them is that we are going to
fight for all Angelinos.
Speaker 2 (30:02):
Okay. I don't know what that means. Is she going
to be in the streets fighting the Feds? Is she
going to be fighting LAPD? Is she gonna be fighting
you know, homeland security of the FBI.
Speaker 5 (30:12):
I don't know.
Speaker 9 (30:13):
Regardless of when they got here, whether they have papers
or not. We are a city of immigrants and this
impacts hundreds of thousands of Angelinos. And so we are
going to have a meeting on Monday with the various
groups that work with the immigrant population to talk about
what is the plan going to be when these things happen.
(30:34):
As you know, this is the federal government. They do
not notify. They don't call the mayor's office and say
we're coming in to make a raid. They do not
call the Los Angeles Police Department.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
And say that, yes they do, Yes, they do.
Speaker 9 (30:46):
They do not call the Los Angeles Police Department and.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
Say that, I'll bet well, ask Jim McDonald if that's true.
You think la you think the Feds come in without
telling LAPD. Jim McDonald said he knew what was going on.
So somebody's lying, and I think it's Marabaths. I think
Marabaths knows that Jim McDonald and LAPD they knew that
this was happening today because the Feds called them and
(31:11):
told them, and Jim said so as much, and now
she's denying it.
Speaker 9 (31:16):
They do not call the Los Angeles Police Department and say.
Speaker 2 (31:19):
That, I'd like to find out if that's true.
Speaker 9 (31:21):
They do not call the Los Angeles Police Department and
say that. So when these things pop up, we hear
from the community first. And now the community is organized
to the point where if they hear of an ice
raiate happening, then spontaneously people show up to bear witness
to what has happened.
Speaker 8 (31:40):
Can you clarify LAPD? LASD they have no rule when
it comes to these kinds of raids in this kind
of enforcement.
Speaker 9 (31:48):
That's correct. However, there are instances, for example, what we're
hearing about happened earlier where David was arrested. Was one
of the agencies put out a call for help, and
then in that situation, LAPD does show up. We have
to examine all of that. We have to examine what
happened and why.
Speaker 8 (32:08):
Mayor, before I let you go, what's your next move today?
Speaker 9 (32:10):
My next move today is to one do what I
can to get David Werta out of ice detention. So
I leave the hospital to go look at what we
can do to help getting him out. I don't want
to see him spend days in ice attention.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
That's just absurd.
Speaker 9 (32:26):
He is one of our most prominent respected labor leaders
in our city.
Speaker 8 (32:30):
Do you know what he was doing when he was
taken into custody.
Speaker 9 (32:33):
I don't know what he was doing. I know that
he was on the ground, there were lots of videotapes
of that. I know he was sprayed with mace. I
know that or pepper spray, but I don't know what
happened before then.
Speaker 8 (32:44):
Mayor Karen Bass, the City of Los Angeles, thank you
so much for joining us.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
All Right, I'm going to ask my friends on LAPD.
I know a bunch of cops If this is true,
they do.
Speaker 9 (32:54):
Not call the Los Angeles Police Department and.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
Say that does LAPD get a heads up before there's
a raid in downtown Los Angeles? I think they do.
I'm going to find out and then we'll report back.
