Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's KFI AM six forty and you're listening to the
Conway Show on demand on the iHeartRadio app. A horrible
day here in southern California. Three deputies have lost their
lives in an explosion this morning at the training facility,
the Academy there right off the seven to ten and
the ten Freeway. One with nineteen years experience, another one
(00:22):
with twenty two and another one with thirty three years experience.
Total of seventy four years of experience. We have not
seen anything like this in Los Angeles since eighteen fifty seven,
a year before Abraham Lincoln was elected, an awful long time.
Nobody in Los Angeles has seen this. The three vans
are at the Medical Examiner's office. They are opening them
(00:44):
up now and going to take the three bodies into
the medical Examiner's office for an autopsy. And not sure
how long they'll be in there and when they'll be leaving.
Maybe it'll be early tomorrow morning, could be late tonight.
But a friend of mine who was with the bomb
squad and knows every one of these three brave men.
(01:06):
I talked to him this morning and you could just
hear it. Absolutely devastated his name is Johnny Hanson and
he's a former deputy with the La Shares Deputy Department. Johnny,
I can't tell you no, not just me, but people
work here in KFI and the people live in Los Angeles.
How sorry we are for you and your fellow officers.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Thanks, buddy, and thanks to you and Sharon for the
kind messages today. So I don't have a whole lot
of time, brother, but I'll tell you what I do know.
It was those Santa Monica devices reported as hand grenades,
and they were using a tool to dismantle those, and
(01:55):
it looks like those things get madd So we don't
know if they were booby trapped. We don't know if
the guys uh I thought that the tool they were
using wouldn't detonate them. We don't. We don't know. So,
but it does look like all three were killed instantly,
(02:17):
and uh, they're gonna be looking, you know, further into
where these devices came from the origin, uh, the whole
the whole path from Santa Monica to East LA.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Right now, Johnny, you you, without obviously giving any names,
you know all three of these deputies.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Yeah, I know all three. One of them was newly assigned,
but I knew him when he worked on the canine side. Uh.
The other two I worked with. One of them was
just getting there as I was leaving, so he was
literally coming in to get his uniform set up, and
I happened to be in the office. I drove him
(02:58):
down to Long Beach. He got fitted for uniforms. We
have special patches that we put on our uniforms, you know,
for Special Enforcement Bureau and bomb squad and all that stuff.
So I helped him with that, and that's the probably
the last time I saw him. But the guy with
the thirty three years on, I knew him pretty well.
(03:19):
Great guy, great sense of humor. He loved your show, Timmy.
I can tell you that for sure. He always every
time he heard me on there, he would think, say, amen,
Tim's one of the guys that has our back. That's
definitely not a fair weathered friend. So just take it
to heart that these guys loved you and we've listened
(03:40):
to your show. I told you a hundred times in
the office, while we're sitting around at night writing reports,
we'd be listening to you. The surveillance guys will be
watching a house. They'd be listening to you and Steckler,
and yeah, you guys are all close. You're all very
well regarded by our units.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Very nice to say that.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
I I think I may have met one of of the.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Deputies at at so far.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Was he there that night when when you guys were
unseen there protecting the the I think it's.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
A I'm going to look at the photos. I'm going
to bring those up, but there's a very good chance
you're in a picture with this guys.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Man. Unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
We've learned today, Uh, Johnny that one of the deputies
had four children.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Is that correct?
Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yeah? Yeah, the middle the guy with the middle amount.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Of experience twenty two years experience. Yeah, and do we
I guess. I don't want to say the ages because
that could give it away. And I don't want to
you know, get any you know, burden these families anymore.
But this is just, you know, absolutely devastating. You can
feel it in Los Angeles, you know, just people driving around.
(04:58):
There's a sense of you know, dark is and sadness
around Los Angeles. Now in your experience, Johnny, are they
going to you know, when they have the service for
these three deputies? Is that something that they're going to
all three of them are going to be together more
(05:18):
than likely.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Of course, you'll be up to the families, but my
guess is that'll be the most respectful way to handle it. Sure,
And as soon as I hear something, I'll let you
know and I'll try and get in if you're around
next week to just talk about some stuff further.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Yeah, please, I got to get back.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Well, once we know you know who they are, we'd
love to spend some time to celebrate them and to
talk about, you know, how great they are and any
kind of you know, events that'll be occurring to help
the families.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
We'd love to be in one hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Definitely, And thank you Sharon for reaching out and you
and Angel, Thank you guys for always supporting us. And
I will be in touch next week.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
You're the best, buddy, God bless you and the rest
of the officers and deputies.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Man all right, Johnny Hanson a friend of mine who's
on the bomb squad. I've become fairly pretty actually very
close to them over the last ten twelve years and
just outstanding guys. I met a bunch of them when
I went to the Charger game. It was the Chargers,
(06:24):
I think versus Pittsburgh Steelers. And these guys are, you know,
every single one of them brave as can possibly be.
These are the guys that run towards trouble and not
away from it. And you know, run towards people, you know,
gunshots and not a way And these are you know,
(06:45):
what keeps the society from unraveling. And we lost three brave,
beautiful deputies today. We're going to have an update for
you as well on how long these the three men
will be at the medical center and where they will
be going from there and any of the details when
(07:05):
it comes to the service or services.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
We'll have that for you as well.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
AM six.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
Forty segment shows being brought to you by Advanced There
one day treatment, life changing results. Make your appointment today
at advanced there dot com. The reactions are pouring in
from around the United States, politicians, actors, actresses, writers, other
prominent people in society. This is Mayor Bass and Rob
(07:36):
Bonta talking about the three deputies that were lost this
morning in Los Angeles.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
Reaction is pouring in over today's tragedy Los Angeles mark
Karen Bass taking to social media to show her support
for the Sheriff's Department and everyone affected by the explosion.
She adds that the Fire Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
and Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigation. Attorney
General Bonte also taking to x saying his office is
(08:03):
in contact with the LA Sheriff's Department as the investigation continues,
offering his deepest condolences to the families and loved ones
of the fallen deputies.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Yeah, it's a time like this when politics doesn't mean
a thing, nothing, absolutely nothing, and people from both sides
of the aisle get together and want to make it
more comfortable for the family members of the three deputies
who lost their lives. It's a long, long day for
(08:38):
everybody in the department, in the LA Sheriff's Department, long day.
It's going to be a long weekend, very sad weekend.
A lot of guys texting, calling each other on the phone,
maybe reaching out to people who haven't talked to in years,
you know, just checking in with them, see how they're doing,
how they're handling it. People who who knew these three deputies.
(09:04):
They've been on the force a long time, seventy four
years combined, nineteen years, twenty two years, and thirty three years.
And the deputy who had twenty two years on we
know he has four children. Not sure how old they are,
not sure if they're I think they're he's I think
(09:28):
Johnny Hanson said that they were by his second marriage.
He also has children, so that you might have very
young children and having to sit around a house today
it's empty, it's devastating, absolutely devastating. Eric Leonard had a
piece on with an inside look at what the bomb
(09:50):
squad does and you know what the you know the
dangers are in doing this. But first there is an
investigation about the grenades that were found. From what we understand,
there were grenades found in Santa Monica and somebody who
had moved out of an apartment and left one of
(10:14):
those black storage binds. You see him at Costco and
Walmart and Lowe's, the black storage bends with the yellow tops.
Those seemed to be all the rage. Now everybody has
those and that's what was left behind, filled with what
is now deadly material. So let's find out a little
(10:35):
more about that investigator.
Speaker 6 (10:36):
We are at the corner of Bay and Lincoln, and
if you were able to see over my shoulder, I
know you're not able to, you would be able to
see the apartment complex behind me. It was one thirty
this afternoon when officials investigators launched here on the same
Sam Dubat, our photographer, the only one here to get
those exclusive pictures as investigators went in. And we've been
(11:01):
hearing now from the former sheriff and of course Supervisor
Barger saying there is a direct connection between the Santa
Monica location and the horrible tragedy that occurred earlier this morning.
So what we were able to glean from people we
talked to was that it was yesterday when people who
live in the apartment building were told that investigators were
(11:25):
going to be called to the scene, and that was
because there was a construction crew on the scene here.
They had gone into the underground parking unit where they
were working on putting in some EV chargers, when they
came upon a locked enclosure there, some kind of a
closet or a storage unit, if you will, and when
(11:46):
they opened it, they discovered what they thought were grenades.
They became very scared as anyone would. They called officials
and that's when the Sheriff's investigators from the bomb squad
arrived on the scene. They began looking at the contents.
So apparently, according to what we heard from people who
(12:06):
live in the apartment building, they were only here about
an hour, is what one neighbor told me, and then
they were given the all clears. So people who live
in that apartment building spent the night there, and so
the contents was taken and moved to another location, presumably
where this horrible tragedy occurred this morning, and so people
(12:30):
were not aware that those grenades, if you will, those explosives.
I can't confirm that they were grenades, although Fox eleven
did obtain some exclusive pictures of what was taken, but
I'm certainly not a bomb expert. I don't want to
offer conjecture on what they might have been. But hopefully
we're able to put up that picture at some point
(12:50):
and show you what was seized from this location, according
to our exclusive information from a Sheriff's deputy who remains unnamed,
of what was then, So that happened, and then this
morning what would have been what would have been considered routine,
if you will, by these experts. These are the most
highly trained experts the bomb detail. They train day in
(13:14):
and day out. You have to be hand selected for
these specialty teams. Only those who are the very best,
the high performers, the overachievers, if you will, are asked
to be on those details. And we all know what
happened after that, that horrible explosion that took the lives
of three men who WO had trained time and time again,
(13:34):
and yet could not have predicted what happened this morning
and ended so very tragically.
Speaker 7 (13:40):
And Laura, I think we have the pictures that you're
referring to that we can now show. Maybe we can
bring those up, which is our look, Okay, we'll be
there soon.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
An opportunity here we go.
Speaker 7 (13:54):
So this is the image, and Laura, maybe talk about
what we're seeing here in terms of the pictures that
have been obtained and what we're thinking from looking at them.
Speaker 6 (14:09):
Well, again, you know, I'm not an expert in this,
but they look to be some kind of an explosive
device that was taken out from this garage here, if
you will, at this apartment complex. And we were told
by a source within the Sheriff's department that this is
(14:29):
what the gang, the bomb detail was trying to deal
with this morning, and so we can only guess that
they did not think that there was the possibility that
they would explode. There's a lot of protocol involved with
how they dispense with things, but based on what we
(14:49):
heard from the former sheriff, it sounded like they were
in the process of transporting correct to decide the next move.
Speaker 8 (14:57):
Yes, in fact, the former sheriff Lenoeva is still here
on set, so we want to ask his thoughts on
those images.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
If we could leave those images up, that would be great.
Did you get a look at that? And I don't
know what you can glean.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
If anything, Okay, when we come back, we'll have former
Sheriff youd Weeva talk about about what he found or
what he saw, and there showed him the pictures of
it on Channel eleven and we'll find out from the
former sheriff what his opinion is. But this also could
have been much much worse. I know it's horrible, but
(15:34):
if those grenades had gone off in the apartment building,
it could have killed not only those three deputies, but
anybody and everybody who was you know, around that apartment
that could have been three, four, five, a half dozen
people as well. So we'll continue here and listen to
the former sheriff. When we come back, all the deputies
are now leaving the Medical Examiner's office and watching it
(15:56):
on Channel eleven, all walking back to their cars and
probably going back to the training facility off the seven
to ten and the ten Freeway. It's Conway Show, very
grim day here in Los Angeles.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
AM six forty.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
It's Conway Show.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
We continue our coverage of the horrible accident that happened
this morning that costs three deputies their lives with the
Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, a lot of experience seventy four
combined years nineteen twenty two and thirty three years a
part of the Sheriff's Enforcement bureaum. The investigation, we'll focus
(16:39):
now on Santa Monica out near Bay and Lincoln where
these explosive devices and a lot of people are believed
that they were hand grenades were found. So if you see,
if you hear a lot of helicopters over Lincoln and Bay,
and you see a lot of reporters. This is the
reason those three young men lost their lives at the
(17:03):
sheriff's training center early this morning. And so now they've
asked the former sheriff of Vianaueva, and also they also
have a bomb expert that they asked as well.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
So let's pick this up here.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
This is the former sheriff talking about what they found
out in Santa Monica with these explosive devices.
Speaker 9 (17:26):
I got to look at I was looking at the
nomenclature and in two on three that sounds like military
grade fuses.
Speaker 8 (17:33):
Okay, Well, with that said, we do have national security expert,
how Kemfort also joining our coverage. You know this, Well,
what do you make of the images that we've obtained?
Speaker 10 (17:44):
Thirteen fuses? Let's go with them. Sixty seven hand grenade.
That's a standard round hand grenade that's used still being
used by the military forces US forces.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
All over the world.
Speaker 10 (17:56):
The grenades themselves, material, the composition, explosive competition in the
grenade tends to be rather stable. The fuses are a
little less stable, and even something like extreme heat can
potentially set off a fuse. There's just a variety of
things that could have gone wrong, and you know, no
(18:17):
one knows how long they were stored there.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
This is a guy named Hal Camper. He's with Homeland
Homeland security expert.
Speaker 10 (18:24):
In what condition they were in when they got there
and when they're being stored there. And of course now
they're going to be looking a lot harder because they're
going to be wondering was this just a one off
that they happen to find these things or could there
be others security around the property. So they're gonna be
looking awful hard But there was obviously more than one
(18:44):
grenade device. Obviously you have fuses separate from grenades. And
there's a report that this was the property or this
could have come from a deceased military veteran that this
was his material that was found and or his whatever
he had. Of course, I want to make it absolutely
clear that you're not supposed to have any type of
(19:06):
military ordinance, you know, if whether you're active, retired form,
or you know whatever that obviously somehow he got this
wrongfully and had it there and it's just extremely dangerous.
And and by the way, I just want to say
one thing, the military, we inspect, we count we audit,
(19:29):
we check this stuff all the time to make sure
that military or ordinance like this doesn't doesn't get out,
you know, it doesn't get into civilian society. But even
with all that said, sometimes some does get out there,
and this obviously is a case. And of course, explosives
extremely dangerous.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
Okay, We're going to have all the latest on on
the entire day of what happened. All throughout the weekend.
You'll hear Michael Monks talk about it. Mo Kelly will
talk about it tonight Michael Monks seven to nine pm.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
And then we'll pick it up on Monday.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
We'll gather a bunch of information and we'll see probably
either later tonight or tomorrow early morning, the three bodies
taken out of the Medical Examiner's office and proceed to
a funeral home of the choice of the family. It's
a really grim day in southern California. In other news,
(20:25):
a huge story is coming out of Washington, d C.
Donald Trump is suing Rupert Murdoch, who owns the Wall
Street Journal and also Fox News. This is going to
be a major story and a major fight. Trump is
suing Murdoch for ten billion dollars. This story is just
(20:46):
coming out, just developing last couple of hours. But President
Donald Trump today followed through on his threat to sue
media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who owns the Wall Street Journal
and Fox News, and they published an article saying that
Trump sent his then ex friend or then friend, Jeffrey
Epstein a letter for Epstein's fiftieth birthday and that if
(21:12):
that is going to be a major, major story. Trump,
who angrily denies writing the letter, is seeking damages for
no less than ten billion dollars in the lawsuit alleging defamation. Well,
now there's going to be a huge problem on Fox
News because Ruper Murdoch owns Fox News. Donald Trump, who
(21:35):
became president because of Fox News, is now suing Fox
News and the Wall Street Journal. This is going to
be an unbelievable battle and a major story. And you're
going to start to see how it's going to be
very uncomfortable for people on Fox News to report on
Donald Trump knowing that their parent company and their owners
(21:56):
being sued for ten billion dollars. This is going to
be a wild fight in Washington, DC and in New
York with the Murdochs and the Trumps. This is going
to be the battle of a century. All right, we'll
have I'm sure mo Kelly have more on that story
as well. We are live on a very grim day
(22:17):
here in Los Angeles. We'll wrap it all up. Mo
Kelly will come on at seven o'clock and he'll have
the latest for you.
Speaker 4 (22:23):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
Am six forty.
Speaker 1 (22:31):
We will have a need more information on these three brave,
beautiful deputies who were killed this morning with the LA
Sheriff's Department, and anything on the investigation we'll have, we'll
bring that to immediately. I know that mo Kelly's going
to be talking about it also tomorrow Michael Monks as well,
seven and nine pm. And then we'll be on at
(22:54):
four o'clock. Obviously, you know Handle and Gary Shannon Gary
Shannon are back them back on Monday. John Colebelt is
back on Monday, so and we'll be here on Monday.
So any information we have, we'll bring that to immediately.
Keep it here on KFI. Another big story, this might
(23:15):
be the biggest story in decades in Washington. President Donald
Trump today followed through on his threat to sue Rupert Murdoch,
who owns the Wall Street Journal and Fox News, So
this is going to be a tremendous battle.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
There was a letter.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
I guess there's letters from Epstein's fiftieth birthday Jeffrey Emston's
fiftieth birthday party that were given to the Wall Street
Journal that Donald Trump says are absolutely forged and phonied up.
So Trump, who angrily denies writing the letter, is seeking
damages no less than ten billion dollars in the lawsuit
(23:56):
alleging defamation. So named as defendants in the law suit,
and I think it was the Southern District of Florida
where they filed. This is Murdoch, his company News Corp.
The CEO, Robert Thompson, the Wall Street Journal's publisher, Dow
Jones and Company, and two reporters who wrote the article
(24:17):
published in Thursday on Thursday evening. This didn't take long.
That article came out yesterday, late last night, and the
lawsuits have already been filed. A Dow Jones spokesperson sent
the following statement to CNBC. We have full confidence in
the accuracy of our reporting and will vigorously defend against
(24:39):
any lawsuit. The suit comes as Trump faces growing pressure
to have the Justice Department released investigative files about Epstein,
who killed himself in August of twenty nineteen after being
arrested on federal child sex trafficking charges. The journal's article
said that the letter written purportedly written by Trump to
(25:02):
Epstein was among documents reviewed by criminal investigators who ultimately
built criminal cases against Epstein for and is convicted right
hand woman as it Glesine Jazzline Maxwell, who reported that
(25:23):
reportedly solicited the letter from the president. But here's the problem.
The President says it's all bs, and the Wall Street
Journal says, no, it's all absolutely true, and it's going
to put the only one of the Well, I guess
the reason Donald Trump would not be president if it
wasn't for Fox News. The guy who owns Fox News
(25:43):
is Rob Rupert Murdoch, and now they're going to be
involved in this major lawsuit that is going to be
the major story in Washington for the next couple of
months unless this thing is settled pretty quickly, which I
don't think it will be by the letter that was
given to them. Let's see here, there's a there was
(26:06):
a hand drawn naked woman which which they say Donald
Trump wrote and drew. Donald Trump is denying writing it
or drawing it. So this is going to be the
story of all stories coming out of Washington DC.
Speaker 3 (26:24):
And if this thing, you know, this could be.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
Big enough where it could mean, you know, either a
Rupert Murdoch has to bay Donald Trump ten billion dollars
for defamation or Trump. It might be proven that the
letters are true, and it might be big enough where
Trump could be impeached for it. This is going to
be a major, major story coming out of Washington, d C.
(26:51):
The biggest story in decades. It'll put all those other
Russia Russia Russia gate to to like they'll it'll it'll
put those to shame, and those will feel like a
rained out picnic compared to what's going on right now.
But this will be the lead story on all the
network shows, all the Sunday morning shows, and everybody who
(27:16):
hates Trump is going to love this story. If you're
a Trump hater, this is going to be the story
you've been waiting for for years or decades. It's going
to be a huge, huge battle. So we'll see how that,
how that happens. And also lighter, lighter news. The the
owner I think she's the sole owner of in and.
Speaker 3 (27:38):
Out, and I believe she is the A Snyder. Is it?
Is it Lindsay? I think it's a Lindsay Snyder.
Speaker 1 (27:45):
She's the I believe, the soul, the sole heir to
In and Out. She's moving out of California, and that's
sort of sort of indicative of what's going on in California.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
Lindsay Snyder announced her move and an.
Speaker 1 (28:01):
Episode of a broadcast of a podcast called Relatable with
Ali Beth Stuckey and aired on Friday, it says, we're
building an office in Franklin, Tennessee, so I'm actually moving there. Snyder,
who's the granddaughter of In and Out founder Harry and
Esther Snyder, grew up in northern California before moving to
(28:22):
southern California, and part of her decision came down to
her family. I was born and raised here in southern California,
and when I was a kid, not a single person
ever talked about moving out of California.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
Not one.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
Now, everybody I know talks about it. Most people don't
do it, most people won't do it, but everybody talks
about it. What happened to the state in two three
for very short decades from nobody talking to moving out
of California. To everybody talking about moving out of California,
(29:00):
you're in for the long run, right, Stepish, Oh yeah,
you're an og here to stay born and raised.
Speaker 9 (29:07):
And it's funny too, because when I when I when
I do UBER, especially during the holidays, and they take
people to the airport, they're always so shocked that I'm
I was born and raised here. Really, I yeah, because
I always take people and they're like, Oh, I gotta
go to like negative ten degree weather or I gotta
go to one hundred and twelve degree weather. They're all
so bummed out that they have to leave California. And
(29:29):
so they asked me and they're like, oh, yeah, where
you from? Like from here? Where'd you come from?
Speaker 3 (29:35):
No? I was born Oh really? Yeah?
Speaker 9 (29:38):
Wow, that's so that's so crazy, Like everyone's so shocked
that I'm actually from here.
Speaker 3 (29:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
There aren't a lot of people, you know, born and
raised out of You get a lot of people from
New York, a lot of people from the South or
up you know, Seattle, Portland area. But buddy, you're a
great ambassador for the city of Los Angeles, state of California.
You gotta stay all right, any more news coming out
of this horrible story that we've been covering all day
long here on KFI. These three Shares deputies who lost
(30:04):
their lives. You'll hear about it on Moe's show. You'll
hear about it tomorrow, all day Sunday, and then first
thing on Monday with Bill Handle. We're live mo coming
up next right here on KFI AM six forty
