Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's k IF.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
I am six forty and you're listening to the Conway
Show on demand on the iHeartRadio app. And whenever we
talk about the Derby, it's always being brought to you
by This segment is being brought to you by Advanced

of the world's greatest handicappers. He's not with us, but
Todd Shrub's with us. Todd, how you bubb.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Team.

Speaker 4 (00:31):
You just knocked me out at the first twenty seconds.
I gotta get up off the mat, Buddy for starting
the show.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Do you remember it was nineteen I'm gonna have to
try to guess. Let me see thirty three one oh
three would be so it was twenty thirteen. It was
December fifteenth of twenty thirteen. Hollywood Park was on its
last leg, and I spent the day at the track.
It was my dad's eightieth birthday and I was there

(00:58):
at the at Hollywood Park and I stopped there before
I went to see my dad for his eightieth birthday.
And you and I hit a trifecta. It was a
two four to seven Trifecta I played for me and
you and we won like two hundred and seventy dollars.

Speaker 5 (01:12):
Do you remember that at all?

Speaker 3 (01:13):
I do?

Speaker 4 (01:14):
And I have to tell you, I am one of
those people that it's hard to go to SOFI because
I know what's underneath sofar it's Hollywood Park and all
those great memories. And one of the from that last season,
A lot of people forget this. From that last season,
there was a horse that won a two year old
steak race. His name was California Chrome. Out then the

(01:34):
following year he went on, obviously to win the sant
Anita Derby, win the Kentucky Derby, and win the Preakness
and almost come up with the Triple Crown. But yes,
so many great memories at Hollywood Park, whether it's the
Trifecta two four to seven box or horses like California
Chrome and many other great ones. And that's why you know,
when I look at the state of California racing and
I look at the venues that we have, there is

(01:58):
a generation that won't know how great Hollywood Park lose.
Right that hurts. Golden Gate closed last June. I had
to go there and preside over that it was very hard,
so the end of essentially a major racetrack in northern California.
So when you look at the two major tracks left
in California racing, Santa Nita and Delmar, to me, the
industry doesn't work unless they work. And for Santa Anita,

(02:20):
you know, for your audience, some might be like, well,
I'm not really getting the horse racing. Let me just
assure you this is not only one of the most
beautiful racetracks in the world in Santa Anita, it's one
of the great sporting venues anywhere. And when you just
kind of when you kind of you know, you look
around your neighborhoods and you see the single homes disappearing
and these monolithic structures going up, and we're all crowded

(02:40):
on top of each other. To be able to go
out to a facility that has over three hundred and
sixty acres, has great spots to take in the races
throughout the day, has that view of the San Gabriel
Mountain Range. I mean, to me, Santa Nita is a
real treasure for California, not just racing overall.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Todd trumps with us with TVG. I have been going
to Santa Anita since I was probably three years old,
and every single time I walked in, even last Saturday,
I takes my breath away with how beautiful that park
is well.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
And I tell people who haven't been there before when
you come to sant Anito for the first time, the
walk you have to make is by Monument Gardens where
the big fountain is, and they got a statue of Ziniada.
They got a statue Yeah John Henry. And then there's
a main entrance into the grand stand and it takes
you out to the track Apron, So you walk through
the heart of the grand stand and then you come
out and you see this unreal view as if it

(03:36):
is off a Hollywood sound stage. It's that remarkable, and
you just look left and you look right. I had
a friend who is from Kentucky and he's, you know,
blue blood in that sense it's all about Kentucky racetracks.
But he's also a Bengals fan. So when they came
out for the Super Bowl a couple of years ago,
he said, I want to come to San Anita for
the first time. I'm like, fine, I will set you up.

(03:57):
So I put him in the Eddie logan lounge. You
got Tom Quigley, great care of them. But I spent
lunch with them and about three races in and the
view in the Logan lounge is right on the first turn,
and you see that view of the mountains, and the
horses are right up close to you. He turned to
me said there's only one problem with Santa Anita. I said,
what's that? He goes, it's so beautiful you forget to bet.

(04:20):
The beauty is literally a distraction. But the great thing
is it's also great betting. And you know, one of
the most underreported stories this year in an industry that
truly needs good news, is sant Anita has had a
real turnaround. Their handle is up both on track and
off track. The amount of horses that they have per
race is up over the previous year, which leads to

(04:42):
better betting. So this has been a really good year
for Santa Anita. People can talk about the future, and
we can talk about some of the problems of the past,
but I think those problems that have been addressed from
the past have given us a chance moving forward. Yes,
there's still problems in front of us, but a day
at Santa Anita, you forget all of those things, and
sant Adita has done a magnificent job in this meet

(05:04):
and really staging a comeback and setting up for their
biggest day tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
You know, that's a great slogan for Santa Anita. If
they were smart, they would adopt that. So beautiful, you'll forget,
You'll forget the bed.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
Yeah, well I can't believe I stumbled on that.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah, and you know, Hollywood Parks was come out and
hang out with wet, homeless guys.

Speaker 4 (05:26):
Do I ever want to tell you? I'm not going
to tell this story. I'm now okay, But yeah, it
did get a little dicey towards the end of Hollywood Park,
one of my favorites. There's a lot of good marketing
slogans at the track, but one of my first major
jobs with South Florida and at Calder Racecourse, they were
known for having big two year olds and then those
horse will go on to win bigger races as they

(05:48):
got older. So two horses that came out of the
same year at Calder Racecourse. One was called Spend a
Buck and the other was Smile, So they made their
slogan spend the Buck at Calder and smile.

Speaker 5 (06:02):
Oh, that's great, That is pretty good. All right. So
tomorrow we've got the sant Anita Derby.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
They're expecting thirty five, maybe forty thousand people out there tomorrow, and.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
It's gonna be comfortable. That's the other part about this facility.
You even look at baseball stadiums now there. You know
a lot of the older stadiums were built for another
time in crowds that don't come anymore. Santa Nita can
handle that type of crowd comfortably. So if you're sitting there, well,
I don't want to be part of a big crowd. No,
A big crowd is exciting and fun. At Santa Anita,
they're gonna have twelve races tomorrow and the first race

(06:34):
will be at noon. I personally like being there for
all twelve, but if you get a little bit of
a late start. The Santa Anita Derby itself is not
until race ten, and it's at four forty six local time,
you know.

Speaker 5 (06:45):
All right, So we got five horses in the derby.
Who do you like?

Speaker 4 (06:51):
Well, first of all, I've been following this horse since
last year. I want to put that out there because
I don't want your listeners to think I'm just coming.

Speaker 5 (06:56):
Front runner fit for them.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
There's a horse journalism last year caught my eye breaking
his maid at del Mar. The reason he caught my
eyes because one, physically, you look like you're looking at it, Donna.
So if you get a chance tomorrow when you're out
at the races, get down by the paddock and see
journalism up closer, at least see him in the post parade.
Physically he's got everything and mentally he's got it all too.

(07:20):
He's a son of Kurlin, who's one of the top
sires in the sport. And so after he broke his
maiden at del Mar, he proved that he was going
to be a three year old the following year. So
as a two year old, he broke his maiden at Delmar.
Then he won a race called the Great two Los
Alaminos Security, and then he went to the sidelines to
wait for his three year old season. So his first

(07:40):
start was at San Anita back on March first, and
the grade to San Felipe. I know his owner quite well.
He heads up the partnership of Eclipse Thoroughbreds, Aaron Wellman.
We did an interview with Aaron Wellman that day on
FanDuel TV and he basically said the horse is eighty
five percent. So I didn't know what to expect in
the San Felipe because in there he was taking on

(08:01):
a Bob Bafford horse who had a huge reputation, a
horse named Barnes. The purchase price for Barnes three point
two million dollars. He bought for three point two million.
He's the most expensive purchase price in tomorrow's race. But
to show you how times have changed in this field
of five, if you totaled up everyone's purchase price, it's
six point six million, so you're coming out to an

(08:23):
average about one point three million. These horses were all
bought with the intention that one day they'd be a
really good horse. So while we talk about a field
of five, I can say, having followed all the prep
races around the country this year, there's only two major
ones that remain. After the sant Anita Derby, the Bluegrass
in Kentucky and then the Memorial in New York. This
is the best prep race. It's not about the numbers

(08:44):
the field of five, it's the quality. So journalism came
off the shelf his debut as a three year old,
he runs up against Barnes. Barnes was the favorite and
he beat him easily and he wasn't even ready. So
if we're to believe that that he's actually going to
take a move forward tomorrow, Journalism is not only the
horse to beat in the sant Anita Derby. He's been

(09:05):
my horse for the Kentucky Derby since last year and
he's done nothing in the one start. If anything, he's
just bolstered my confidence in him. So the real question
tomorrow is, Okay, we've got the Kentucky Derby four weeks
from the sant Anita Derby. Kentucky Derby first Saturday in
May will be May third this year. Yes, you want
to win the Santa Nita Derby, but you don't want

(09:26):
to leave it all out there. So tomorrow, Journalism you
have to ask yourself, Okay, how big of a race
do they want him to run? Because it's all about
setting up in the next four weeks. One other thing
I would point out, way.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
Will Journalism have enough points to be in the Kentucky
Derby even if he doesn't win the Sanieder Derby.

Speaker 4 (09:44):
The wonder we hang out at the track us Mosis.

Speaker 5 (09:46):
That's where I was going.

Speaker 4 (09:47):
On all these prep races, the Kentucky Derby prep races,
they're important because you get points sure. For example, a
lot of the points for the upcoming races are one
hundred points to the winner. That automatically gets you into
the starting gave for the Kentucky Derby. So they're only
going to take twenty three year olds for the Kentucky Derby.
And they're going to take the top point earners from

(10:09):
these prep races now tomorrow. Because it's a smaller field,
they've scaled back the points to the winner seventy five points.
Journalism is probably fine off his win in the Grade
to San Felipe, but you don't want to have anything
go too wrong in your last start, So him finishing
in the top two tomorrow guarantees a spot in the
starting gave for the Kentucky Derby. Other horses like Baiaeza

(10:30):
have not even had a chance at points. Westwood hasn't
had a chance at points. It's a bigger race for
some of those lesser horses in tomorrow's spot. But yes,
points are a very big thing.

Speaker 5 (10:40):
I'll tell you.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
Todd Shrup is with us with tv G I'm sorry. Yeah,
TVG and I'll tell you a quick story. Then we
got to run. I was at Santa Neito with my dad,
this is twelve years ago. Went to the bathroom up
in the clubhouse. We have to walk down that long
flight of stairs.

Speaker 5 (10:56):
And I saw that bathroom.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
Well, yeah, I saw a guy in the stall throwing up,
and I think he also loaded up his pants and
he was screaming to his butt. He was screaming to
his buddy. He goes, he goes, forget what I'm doing here,
Go make the bed, Go make the bed. And I
and so I went back to the table. I told
my dad that story. Guy's throwing up, he hasked his pants.
He's in the bathroom and he's yelling to his buddy,

(11:18):
go make the bet, Go make the bet. And my
dad's response, who did he like?

Speaker 4 (11:27):
I mean, if it's that desperate, then you must have
a really really good horse or.

Speaker 5 (11:31):
Or todd or maybe his luck has run out? Is
that possible?

Speaker 3 (11:36):
What I mean?

Speaker 4 (11:37):
But I there's something about horse players. They will put
everything off, including bodily functions, just to make a play.
When I live in South Florida, I saw a guy
at the Automatic betting machine. And then I watched as
it was running down his leg. Why could you not?
And so then he limped to the bathroom out and
he's got this trail across the probably the weird segue

(12:00):
we've ever.

Speaker 5 (12:01):
Had, exactly.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
I will see you there tomorrow. I can't wait. Thank
you for coming on journalism. All right, thanks Bob, I
appreciate all right. Todd Shrump at TVG. Todd Shrup at TVG,
that guy's the best.

Speaker 6 (12:15):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
Am sixty.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
Remember that pursuit that ended up in Long Beach where
the flatbed truck was bouncing off a bunch of cars.
He ended up running into a paint store. I think
it was Sherwin Williams paint store. And then he ran
from the cops or walked casually away and the cops
tackled him. Well, here's an update on this lunatic. Let's
find out what's going on, because this guy ruined a

(12:43):
lot of lies.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
Look at this over the curb, over the median and
just I mean this for one, look at this crashing
into vehicles one, two, three innocent motorists just dragging them along.

Speaker 7 (12:53):
The driver walking out of that flatbed truck is Adam Bowen.
He's facing nearly a dozen charges, including attempted murdering connection
to that I speed chase that ended in several crashes
in Long Beach last week.

Speaker 5 (13:03):
The forty year.

Speaker 7 (13:03):
Old is accused of carjacking a tow truck operator and
then allegedly try to murder the victim by running him
over with the vehicle. Then Bowen allegedly stole a flatbed
truck and led police on that wild chase. Bowen made
his first court appearance today, but his arraignment has been
delayed for another two weeks.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
Wow wow, wow. All right, we'll keep you updated on that.
That was a spectacularly horrible pursuit. A lot of cars
damage with his nut could have killed somebody, Absolutely could
have killed somebody.

Speaker 8 (13:33):
All right.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
Generic brands. I don't know if you're a generic brander
or not. Bellio, do you shop generic brands when you.

Speaker 5 (13:39):
Get your stuff? I? Do you, okay, like a shampoo
or something? I don't know. No, not shampoo like aspirin.

Speaker 9 (13:46):
No, not aspirin sav No, no, my Sam, you gotta
go brand name with the sad rouge. Oh definitely not
with my ruse eyeliner. No, not with the is line
Miss Mascaro.

Speaker 10 (13:57):
No, no, no, no, no clothing oh no, underpants, no socks,
maybe my socks, nail polish, No, not the nail openers.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
All right, Well you're not a generic brand or then man,
I am though I love generic brands.

Speaker 5 (14:13):
They're the same as regular brands.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
I think as across the board, tariffs on the rest
of the world take hold.

Speaker 10 (14:20):
The United States will implement reciprocal tariffs on other nations.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
The costs of the ingredients and the packaging of some
of your favorite supermarket products are likely to lead to
higher prices. One strategy consumers are using to get around
soaring costs, bagging top quality brands and going for quality
value instead right quality value. One strategy consumers.

Speaker 5 (14:43):
One strategy, got a strategy. One strategy consumer, Yes, go
with the with the generics. I have had this item.

Speaker 4 (14:52):
Their cottage cheese is the best cottage cheese in my opinion.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
A new report from Nielsen i Q reveals private label
sales group globally by four point three percent last year,
with more than half of the survey respondents saying they're
more likely to buy generic products than ever before.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
Let me ask you something. I've never asked you this before.
Do you eat cottage cheese?

Speaker 3 (15:11):
I do?

Speaker 9 (15:11):
I haven't had it in a while.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Oh my wife eats that. I want to throw up
every time I.

Speaker 5 (15:15):
Look at it.

Speaker 10 (15:16):
Well, but you don't.

Speaker 5 (15:17):
Yeah, you're not a cheese guy. Oh it's the worst.
But you put some pineapple?

Speaker 2 (15:21):
Oh my god, delicious cottage cheese?

Speaker 5 (15:27):
Yes, with pineapple? Doesn't it look like throw up? No
kind of what do you put sour cream on it?

Speaker 11 (15:34):
Like cottage cheese?

Speaker 2 (15:35):
Cottage cheese? Yeah, it looks it looks Wait, angel, you
eat that crap?

Speaker 3 (15:41):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (15:41):
Yeah, it's really good. And you've got to load it
up with pineapple. It's the best. Oh my god, it's
like I don't even know you people. Have you ever
had it?

Speaker 2 (15:49):
Have I ever had it? I throw it out whenever
I see it in the refrigerator. I put it in
a bag and put it on the curb. Even if
it's not even if it's not trash day.

Speaker 5 (16:00):
You can't even look at it.

Speaker 10 (16:01):
In its container.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
It looks like something like aliens would eat. You know,
it's horrible. It's the worst.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
A big reason those private labels are twenty six percent
cheaper on average than their name brand alternative.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
Do you hear that generics are twenty six percent cheaper.

Speaker 3 (16:16):
A big reason those private labels are twenty six percent
cheaper on average than their name brand alternatives, but consumers
also believe they're good products.

Speaker 8 (16:24):
That stigma around private labels being solely a cheaper option
of value option is kind of eroding.

Speaker 3 (16:32):
Retailers are noticing and capitalizing on the trend.

Speaker 7 (16:35):
If you guys are not looking for that good and
gather brand, I'm telling you they have to.

Speaker 5 (16:41):
Like they have some good stuff there.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Yeah, I like the Walmart. I think it's called great good,
great something. It's Walmart's store brand is terrific, great one.

Speaker 5 (16:53):
What is it called great value? Great value? Yes?

Speaker 2 (16:56):
Yes, yes, yes, yes, I love especially their their green salsa.
Great value green salsa. You take it only put it
in a blender.

Speaker 5 (17:04):
Oh.

Speaker 3 (17:06):
In March, Target announced a partnership with the James Some
cottage cheese.

Speaker 5 (17:10):
No, get out of here. You like green salsa, but
you don't like cottage cheese. That's right. It's tough you
to make that leap. Yeah, because it's the same thing.

Speaker 2 (17:19):
So if I like, you know, like I like the
ride that the Cadillac offers me, so I also like chimpanzees.
If you right on their back, is that the same thing?

Speaker 5 (17:32):
Okay, you're right on their.

Speaker 11 (17:37):
How can you like green salsa not cottage cheese? Come
on man?

Speaker 5 (17:40):
Yeah? Wait minute? You like U c l A football? Right? Yeah? Well,
and you don't like sunblock? Oh, they're gonna see usc.

Speaker 3 (17:52):
In March, Target announced a partnership with the James Beard
Award winning chef to release a new line of frozen
foods under their Gooding Gather brand. Grocery retail Kroger recently
adding new items like salad kits and Kroger brand tortilla chips.

Speaker 5 (18:04):
Oh, Kroger is the best.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
And membership warehouses like Sam's Club and BJ's are expanding
their brand labels as well. Costco fanatics literally wearing the
Kirkland label on their sleeves.

Speaker 5 (18:16):
I feel so complete.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
Retailers reposition Hey, easy, easy, easy easy.

Speaker 5 (18:21):
I know everything I wear is from Kirkland, socks, pants.

Speaker 12 (18:25):
Handle, Let's talk about that. For years, the entire wardrobe
is Kirkland.

Speaker 5 (18:30):
It's the best.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
Kirkland label on their sleeves.

Speaker 5 (18:33):
I feel so complete.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
Retailers repositioning by rebranding those unbranded products. What does that
tell you about the state of the consumer. I think it.

Speaker 8 (18:41):
Tells us that consumers are more open than ever before
to a brand, regardless of where that brand comes from.
They're looking for something that meets their needs.

Speaker 5 (18:51):
I think she's right. All right.

Speaker 2 (18:52):
There was a fight in the tower. We didn't get
this to this at Reagan Airport. Ringing back that airport
that had the the horrible catastrophe when the plane hit
the helicopter. There was a fight inside the control tower.
What happened we came back. We'll tell you what's going on.
Fist flying in the tower?

Speaker 12 (19:13):
Oh quick update? Yes, sir, Alex Ovechkin has tied records
ninety fourth of his career.

Speaker 5 (19:21):
Wow, all right, So next got next gold.

Speaker 12 (19:24):
He's the king and Gretzky was in attendance apparently, Okay,
he's got to follow him around until he breaks it too.

Speaker 5 (19:30):
Is that game over?

Speaker 11 (19:31):
I don't think so.

Speaker 5 (19:32):
Okay, So he couldn't do it tonight, that's possible. Could
get a hat trick? How about that clinch it? I
had a hat trick? Wow? Wow? Wow.

Speaker 6 (19:40):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
AM six forty. You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on
demand from KFI AM six forty.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
Cook Back KFI AM six forty Conway Show. I'm watching
the Chicago Washington game and ove had a perfect shot
at scoring his third goal to get a hat trick
and break the National Hockey League record of most goals scored,
and he missed it. So he sucks, guys A bum.

(20:15):
Guy's a bum.

Speaker 5 (20:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
So Ovechkin has two goals, one more goal and he
beats Wayne Gretzky's all time record for goals scored in
the NHL.

Speaker 11 (20:28):
I haven't seen them flash up Gretzky in the audience yet,
but and.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
You know, I'm glad this game is close because they
may pull the goaltender. Chicago may pull the goaltender, and
Ovechkin may score on an open net for his final
for the record breaker. That would be cool. I guess
I don't know whoever he gets it is going to
be the new goal scoring leader in the NHL, either
tonight or this weekend. And Krozi, who you know who

(20:56):
owns the record in the NHL for the most goal
scored by two brothers, Wayne Gretzki and Wayne Gretzky's brother.
Do you know how many Wayne Gretzky's brother has zero?

Speaker 5 (21:11):
Not but he did play. Yeah, he played like five games.

Speaker 11 (21:14):
Oh that's it.

Speaker 5 (21:15):
Yeah, And they said, no, you're not you're no good.

Speaker 11 (21:17):
You're no good.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
You're a gret Ski, but you're the wrong grad Ski.
Two words, p you Yeah, you're number ninety eight. We're
looking for a ninety nine bub No good. So there's
h wait, you got the wrong gret Ski. It's a
great title for his book, Got Gretzky, Wait the Wrong gretztrong?

Speaker 5 (21:41):
So I the.

Speaker 2 (21:44):
Capitol one Arena in Washington, DC is packed. I imagine
tickets were going for thousands of dollars because they're going
to see history mate and this and that record may
never be broken again. They already have because he's tied it.
But yeah, yeah, all right they have. They have seen it, yes,
but they that record may never be brother. Can you
know with with guys playing nowadays, with you know, better

(22:05):
defense and better goaltending, they may never see that record again.

Speaker 5 (22:11):
So if you're if you're at home, it's on channel.

Speaker 4 (22:14):
What is it?

Speaker 5 (22:15):
What did I say?

Speaker 2 (22:16):
Eight seventy eight seventy two whatever? System we're on what
are we on cable? I think we're on I think
we're on spec Spectrum. Yeah, yeah, so channel eight seven
to two on Spectrum. There is about two and a
half minutes left Chicago three, Washington four, and Gretzky's.

Speaker 12 (22:38):
Been following him as he's gotten closer and closer. So
he's at the game tonight, and it'd be interesting to
see if he needs to go to the next game.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
Yeah, it looks like he well, who knows. I mean,
he might get it here if.

Speaker 11 (22:49):
They're putting a high pressure on it.

Speaker 2 (22:50):
Chicago's going to pull their goaltender here, you think so
in the next yeah, the next you know, thirty seconds
and they're going to try to tie this game up,
but they're gonna have no goaltender. So Ovechin's going to
get a free shot at that net. What number is eight?
I think is he eight?

Speaker 5 (23:08):
Number eight? I think he's number eight. I should know that.

Speaker 2 (23:12):
Yeah, man, oh no, the goaltender is gone, okay, so
that they now have an open shot at the net.
Ovechkin is going to come on the ice here. Washington
may take a time out to get him a breather,
put him back on the ice and he could get
the tie breaking goal and have the most goals in

(23:35):
the history of the NHL.

Speaker 5 (23:36):
Man that place is packed, and.

Speaker 2 (23:38):
Our own John Decker, who is our White House correspondent,
is in the house, as the kids say, he's there
watching it. Washington for Chicago three with one minute forty
three seconds left, and as I predicted, Washington did take
a time out. So they're going to get Ovechkin back
out there, and if he scores the open net goal,

(24:01):
he will break Wing Gretzky's record, and we'll have the
audio as soon as he does it or shortly after
he does it.

Speaker 5 (24:10):
We can't play it live.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
I've learned that in the past you can't put sporting
events on the air live. I learned that the hard way.
I was suspended and thrown off the air for a week.
And wow, the NBA sued CBS Radio for twenty three
million dollars because I made that mistake. Fortunately, a friend

(24:34):
of mine was able to make that go away.

Speaker 5 (24:37):
But it was touch and go for a long time.
I thought it was over. Well, I'll tell you the story.

Speaker 2 (24:46):
I was working a long time ago in radio and
the Lakers were playing I believe Boston in Game seven,
and nobody was listening to us. Everybody's listening to Boston Lakers.
So we said, screw it, let's just put the Boston
Laker game on the radio.

Speaker 5 (24:58):
And evidently, oh, is this is this a vetch? Is
it is that him?

Speaker 3 (25:07):
No?

Speaker 5 (25:08):
It is no, it's not no, Oh damn it.

Speaker 11 (25:12):
Why didn't he kick it back?

Speaker 5 (25:13):
Why wouldn't he put why wouldn't he kick it back
to him?

Speaker 11 (25:15):
That you already had the game won. You didn't even
need to.

Speaker 2 (25:18):
Score the goal, you know. I think that's a rookie.
I think that may have been his very first goal ever.
Who put that in?

Speaker 5 (25:23):
Who's number? Who's number nine?

Speaker 2 (25:25):
It's kind of cool. Actually, if that's the case, I
think it. I think that's his very first goal. Wow,
how about that? I mean talking about it out there? Yeah,
I know he wasn't out there when it happened. I
don't think Leonard. Yeah, if that may have been Leonard's
first goal, I'd have to look that up. But they
kept the puck, so it is. It's definitely a milestone

(25:46):
for that kid. And he looks young. I bet that's
his very first goal. And why is he on the
ice if that's his very first goal?

Speaker 12 (25:55):
The number eight pick of the twenty twenty three NHL draft,
And is that his first goal?

Speaker 11 (25:59):
Ryan?

Speaker 5 (26:00):
I bet it is.

Speaker 2 (26:03):
I bet that's that kid's first goal in front of
a sold out audience who came to see a guy.

Speaker 5 (26:07):
Is that his first goal?

Speaker 11 (26:08):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (26:09):
Oh wow, okay, first goal. That's kind of cool that
if it wasn't it was him. Yeah in that game.
I mean, but how about the ying and the yang.
You know, one guy on the ice is trying to
break the record. The other guy hasn't scored at all.

Speaker 11 (26:19):
It's only his third game ever played.

Speaker 5 (26:22):
Oh wow.

Speaker 2 (26:23):
I find that astonishing, though, on a night where everybody
spends thousands of dollars for the record, that they would
let a rookie come on the ice on knowing that
there's an open net.

Speaker 5 (26:32):
Yeah, that's odd, strange.

Speaker 2 (26:35):
I think that's the NHL saying, hey, we want another
televised event. Here to watch this, and no's kids are
there too. I think he's got two sons. I think
I know he has at least one son. I think
he has two sons or son and daughter. But he
plays for the Washington Redskins. They still call him that
the Capitals. Yes, the Washington Capitals.

Speaker 11 (26:57):
They're the one team in DC they haven't changed the name.

Speaker 5 (26:59):
Of that's right. I didn't even think about that. Yeah.
Oh well wait, oh he almost scored.

Speaker 11 (27:07):
He had an open shot at the neck.

Speaker 2 (27:09):
Oh, Vechkin could have scored just then, with.

Speaker 5 (27:13):
Literally a minute in, one minute and one.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
Second left, he had a shot at the net and
he just missed by inches, a couple of inches. Look
at that Ovechkin bo if that was off to the
left by two inches, we were looking at history. Oh
it just did yeah, barely deflected off the goalie.

Speaker 5 (27:35):
Barely.

Speaker 2 (27:36):
Oh there is again no Vechkin. Oh what a game. Oh,
Hockey's the best game in the world, just the best man. Oh,
that's his kid right there. That's a Vechkin's kid. Yeah,
young kid, six seven six. H yeah, it looks like yeah,
I'm Ryan six seven years old.

Speaker 11 (27:53):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (27:54):
And I know he's a vegan skid because he has
Ovechkin written all over him, right, not count the tattoos. Yeah,
but if so, anyway, let's see if we can stay
with this until the game's over here and let you
know when if this, if it doesn't happen in this game,
it'll probably happen in the very next game that Washington plays. Yeah,

(28:14):
and it looks like it's not going to happen here,
all right, So it's uh, it's Chicago three and Washington five.
And if it doesn't happen here tonight, which it doesn't
look like it's going to, here's a break. Oh, next
games in New York. How about that gross in New York.

Speaker 11 (28:36):
Islander.

Speaker 5 (28:36):
Oh there's a Vetchkin right there.

Speaker 2 (28:37):
Oh, twelve seconds ago.

Speaker 5 (28:42):
Oh he wants to do it at home?

Speaker 11 (28:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (28:45):
Next next game will be on Long Island, on Long Island. Yeah,
and it will be Capitals against the Islanders on Sunday. Oh,
that's a that's a noon game, I think for us.
For us, that's a nine thirty start. That's early. That's
a noon game in Washington, New York, or at one

(29:05):
o'clock game in New York. So that'll be ten am
our time. If I were the goalie, I'd let him
score on me. Yeah, my name would be etched in history.

Speaker 5 (29:14):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (29:15):
Yeah, why wouldn't you? You know you're not gonna win
the game anyway, Who cares?

Speaker 11 (29:18):
It is done?

Speaker 2 (29:20):
Yeah, it's over game, all right, And Chicago's going to
lose their nine hundredth game of the year, and Washington's
gonna win. Washington's record will go to forty nine eighteen
to nine. Ovechkin gets two goals tonight and an open
net at the end that they couldn't give him the puck.

(29:41):
Chicago Blackhawks will go to from to twenty one, six
hundred and six hundred. They're twenty one wins and six
hundred losses. That seems like a long all right. So
this game is going to be Sunday at ten am
our time in New York with the Islanders. So let's
watch that game on Sunday ten am on probably ESPN

(30:04):
or ABC. It's gonna be on a big station where
you can watch Ovechkin win and beat Gretzky for the
all time score or leader in the history of the
National Hockey League. And you know what, Kroach, they're gonna
do something. I know, we gotta take a break. They're
gonna do something odd here I've never seen before. But
both teams are lining up, and I think the and
I think Chicago's lining up to shake hands with Ovechkin.

(30:25):
I think that's what's about to happen here in Washington,
d C. If ESPN or wherever the NHL network would
go back to the f and game instead of putting
the Kye kyruns up. I think that's what's gonna happen,
that they lined up to shake Ovechkin's hand the whole team.

Speaker 5 (30:41):
You never see that during the regular season.

Speaker 6 (30:43):
You're listening to Tim Conway Junior on demand from KFI
AM six forty.

Speaker 2 (30:51):
Ovechkin did not make it tonight. He was two goals
shy of tying the record.

Speaker 5 (30:58):
He got two goals.

Speaker 2 (31:00):
He ties Wayne Gretzky's record for the most amount of
goals scored in the National Hockey League. That was tied tonight.
You'll remember where you were, probably, I don't know, maybe
you won't. April fourth, twenty twenty five, Ovechkin with the
Washington Capitals has tied Wayne Gretzky. The next game will

(31:21):
be in on Long Island in New York City or
just outside. I guess Long Island's also New York City,
and it will be on Sunday ten am start our time.
I think it's a one o'clock game, maybe twelve thirty,
so nine thirty or ten am on Sunday. It'll probably
be on a major Network. If not, the NHL Network

(31:42):
will carry it, and they might be playing it live
without a subscription, that's possible. But it is going to
be broken. The record is going to be broken. And
Ovechkin went over to his daughter or his son, gave
his son a high five through the glass, you know,

(32:02):
like I guess prisoners do. And he is going to
beat Wayne Gretzky's record. He's going to clip Wayne Gretzky's
record on Sunday, probably Sunday. If it doesn't happen on Sunday,
will happen in the following game. But this is quite
eight hundred and ninety four goals. Eight hundred and ninety

(32:24):
four goals. That is incredible and so you'll see it,
you'll see it on TV. We'd like to thank all
the guests on today's show, Todd Shrump for coming calling
us up. John Dekker was on with us, Alex Michaelson,
Mookie Betts, he was on where we're talking about going

(32:46):
to the White House, Fred Rogan as well as Gail Sayers.
Wayne Gretzky was on with us, and Dave Parker called
him from the pirates.

Speaker 5 (32:56):
Remember that we are family. Remember what I think his
name was the cod You don't remember that, Moses.

Speaker 1 (33:02):
It was seventy nine. Yeah, right now, Lily Stargel, that's right,
I remember. And their song was we Are Fair.

Speaker 5 (33:08):
We are Family, and they won the World Series.

Speaker 1 (33:11):
And they played the Baltimore Orioles. If I'm not mistaken,
their song was ain't no stopping us? Now, Okay, well,
I guess there was some stopping.

Speaker 5 (33:18):
I mean that stops. What's on tonight's show, Bob.

Speaker 1 (33:22):
Well, you know, we're gonna have some fun, as we
always do on a Friday. And first, I want to
say I appreciate the Ovechkin talk because I didn't think
that anyone was going to break Wayne Gretzky's credit scored record.

Speaker 5 (33:34):
I just thought those are just records which are just
not gonna be broke. Right. Did you ever see Wayne playing? Absolutely?

Speaker 2 (33:38):
It was like, you know, it's the same as our
dad's watching Secretariat.

Speaker 11 (33:44):
Yes, because I.

Speaker 1 (33:45):
Grew up hearing the stories of Secretariat. I did too,
but obviously it was way too young to appreciate it.
I more appreciated Spectacular Bid. Yeah, flying Pasture. There were
other horses. I'm trying to think precisionists or talk radio.
Name that movie called Classic, but with a special early

(34:05):
it's weird when I hear me, it's like the lips
weren't even moving. But yeah, we are going to have
named that movie called Classic. Attribute to Valkilmer, tonight's one
of my favorite actors of all time.

Speaker 5 (34:18):
I didn't know who he was. I doubt that.

Speaker 2 (34:22):
You gotta see Moe's look when I told him that,
he looked just looked down like I can't believe that.

Speaker 5 (34:26):
That's I can't. Tomorrow is the big Saniteter Derby.

Speaker 2 (34:30):
I don't know if you'll be out there, but your
dad's spirit will be there.

Speaker 5 (34:34):
Oh, most definitely bet he ram.

Speaker 1 (34:37):
You know, I would hope that we're all in that
better place and we have a chance to just watch
the horses.

Speaker 5 (34:42):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (34:43):
My mo Kelly and my dad have had probably a
ton of things in common, you know, two kids that
went into radio, but they also had a love for
the track that I don't think anyhealthy. Let's be honest saying, okay, look,
I'm I'm with you. You know your dad quit work
to become a professional handicapper. Correct, my dad didn't. But

(35:05):
at the end, I don't know how much your dad
had on him, But my dad was pretty light.

Speaker 1 (35:10):
My mother kept those details away from me and my sister. Okay,
all right, I don't think it was great because he
ended up going back to work a year and a
half later.

Speaker 2 (35:17):
Oh okay, all right, Well I know towards the end of
my dad's life. Look, he bet with both hands, you know.
Oh yes, my dad was betting at one point a
thousand dollars across the board, you know, a thousand of
win place and show on one race.

Speaker 1 (35:32):
I don't know if my father was getting that deep,
but I know my mother wants to ring his neck
at one point.

Speaker 4 (35:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
I guarantee you one hundred percent that our dads had
met at some point.

Speaker 5 (35:42):
They had to because he was there every damn day.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
So's mine every single day, every single day.

Speaker 5 (35:48):
And do you ever go with him? Yes? Yeah. He
taught me how to read a racing for him.

Speaker 1 (35:51):
It's like he told me about Look, if you want
to have a conversation on like a.

Speaker 5 (35:54):
What a mutter is? Or oh yeah for long? Yes,
I'm your guy.

Speaker 2 (35:58):
My dad, when I was sixteen years old, he hit
He got a package on one of these trifectas and
he had me cash it in and I put it
on my Social Security number when I was sixteen and
they didn't take any taxes. Conway Show on demand on
