See how easy we make it foryou. Today is day two of Amazon
Prime Days. We're gonna be talkingwith kt LA tech reporter Rich DeMuro.
As I told you yesterday, Ihave never found good deals on Amazon Prime
(01:07):
Days. But Rich knows how tofind him, and he's going to tell
you how to. That's coming upin about twenty minutes. Last night,
day two of the Republican National Convention. As you know, I'm obsessed with
these things. Love watching him, love watching the speeches, and I got
to say that I was switching betweenthe channels and Fox was just bad blah
(01:30):
blah blah blah blah, talk talktalk, talk talk, and I was
like, I want to hear thespeakers. It's the convention. So then
I was just I had it onCNN most of the evening because CNN was
actually playing most of them, andI thought it was really interesting. I
think the speakers were really interesting.Last night. The theme was make America
Safe Again, but maybe it shouldhave been Team of Rivals because they had
(01:56):
all these people who had run againstTrump, Ted Cruz, the Vake,
Ramaswami, Marco Rubio, Ron deSantis, Nikki Hayley. They were all
on stage throwing their support behind Trumplast night. And you know who else
was on stage? Sarah Huckabee Standers. She was his press secretary. I
(02:19):
was so impressed with her. She'sthe mayor or the mayor, she's the
governor of Arkansas now, but Ijust think she was amazing. So if
you want to go back and watchany of the speeches, I highly recommend
Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Wouldn't she bea great first woman president? HM?
Anyway, here's what's ahead on wakeup Call SpaceX? Oh my gosh,
(02:40):
I just did a Biden. Anyway, here's what the head on wake up
calls. SpaceX is headed to thelone Star state. Elon Musk has announced
that he's going to move SpaceX headquartersfrom California to Texas. He says the
reason is the law just signed byGovernor Newsom that banned school from telling parents
if their child starts using different pronounsin class. Musk set on X that
(03:05):
he warned Newsome that laws like thiswould force families and companies to leave California
to protect their children. Iran hasdenied it's been plotting to kill former President
Trump. US officials say they gotintel weeks before the attempted assassination of Trump
on Saturday. The warning prompted increasedsecurity around the former president as he campaigned
across the country. The Trump teamwas apparently made aware of the threat.
(03:30):
The La Angels are going to begetting nearly three million dollars in a settlement
with the city of Anaheim. Atwo year long fight was resolved on Monday.
In exchange for the money, thecity can build a fire station on
Angels property. An earlier deal thatwas canceled would have allowed for construction of
a new stadium with homes, hotels, shops, and restaurants surrounding it.
(03:53):
At six oh five, it's handleon the news. The temperature is still
up there. A guy with aknife has been shot and killed outside the
RNC. Let's get started with someof the stories coming out of the KFI
twenty four hour newsroom. Some formerfoes of former President Trump have called for
unity at the Republican National Convention inMilwaukee. Former Ambassador Nikki Hayley told delegates
(04:13):
last night Trump has her strong endorsement. I haven't always agreed with President Trump,
but we agree more often than wedisagree. She says America would be
worse off with President Biden and VicePresident Harris. Texas Senator Ted Cruz,
Florida Senator Marco Rubio, and FloridaGovernor DeSantis also supported Trump. DeSantis said
(04:35):
the US cannot afford four more yearsof a weekend at Bernie's presidency. I
am alarmed that the current president ofthe United States lacks the capability to discharge
the duties of his office. Trump'sVP pick JD. Vans is said to
speak at the Convention. Tonight.Police in Milwaukee say a twenty one year
(04:56):
old man who was carrying a concealedgun near the perimeter of the Republican National
Convention has been arrested the Department. In US Capitol Police say the man did
not have a legal concealed carry permitand was walking around wearing a ski mask
and a tactical backpack. LA hascontracted a private security company to patrol Wilmington.
We have these security services available frombasically eight am until midnight or two
(05:23):
am most days, seven days aweek. LA City Councilvan Tim McCosker says
security along Avalon Boulevard is crucial tomake sure residents, businesses, and visitors
feel safe. The city has contractedpeak security for two years using money from
mccosker's office and the state. Let'ssay good morning now to ABC's Karen Travers.
(05:44):
Karen, President Biden was back onthe campaign trail yesterday. He said
politics have become too heated, andthen he went on the attack. Yeah,
you know, it's an interesting linethey're trying to straddle here. He's
back on the campaign trail in battlegroundNevada yesterday and again today, Yesterday,
he courting black voters at the NAACPconvention. Today he is trying to win
over Latino voters. And the Presidentacknowledged the assassination attempt on former President Donald
(06:10):
Trump, saying he was grateful thathe wasn't seriously injured. And he once
again repeated his call for the temperatureto come down in this country, but
he did not hold back on thecriticism of his political rival. He said,
just because you lower the temperature, that you must lower the temperature,
doesn't mean we should stop telling thetruth of who you are, what you've
(06:30):
done, and what you'll do.He was going after him for COVID policies
from four years ago, for histax cuts. He was talking about the
former president's efforts to repeal the AffordableCare Act Obamacare, and even was talking
about something that Donald Trump had saidlast month during their debate when he used
that phrase black jobs. The Presidentto this group the NAACP convention said,
(06:54):
I know what a black job is. It's the vice president of the United
States. While the crowd, ofcourse that lots of cheers for that,
and he really put a spotlight onhis vice president Kamala Harris and how great
she has been for him. Interestingly, he later came back to it.
He credited this group for putting himand Harris into the White House, and
(07:15):
he said she's not only a greatvice president, she could be president in
the United States. That caught ourear, caught a lot of people's ears,
just given all of this still swirlingspeculation about what he may or may
not do and the calls for himto step aside and put her at the
top of the Was that an offhandcomment or was that abrupt? It was
an offhand comment, but just kindof an interesting one. Obviously, he's
(07:39):
talking about her qualifications and touting herand her record and what she's done.
But you know, we're all justkind of looking for all tea leaves and
little clues in everything he's saying thesedays. Yeah, no kidding. And
so he went to the NAACP andthen he's going to a Latino rally today
and specifically probably because his numbers arereally taking a dive there in also those
(08:03):
categories softening numbers absolutely in two verycritical groups that were so important to him
back in twenty twenty. As Isaid, you know, he said yesterday
that this was a group black votersthat really won him the White House,
and any softening of that support, even if it's still very high in general,
a softening could mean a difference insome critical states. Nevada, of
(08:26):
course, is a battleground state. So the President's out there trying to see
what they can do to close thegap out there. But this is a
critical time for the president when youhave the RNC getting such a spotlight right
now, so much attention on theRepublican side, and especially in the wake
of the assassination attempt on the presidentformer president over the weekend. Well,
(08:46):
he's got a busy week ahead forhim, all right. Karen Travers,
thank you so much for the information, for checking in. We'll talk to
you again soon. Have a greatday, all right, you too.
Let's get back to some of thestories coming out of the KFI twenty four
hour newsroom. La Mayor Bass hasvetoed and item on police reform. The
move may knock from the November ballotand attempt to allow the LAPD chief to
directly fire officers, along with otherreforms to disciplinary action. The city council
(09:09):
approved the ballot measure earlier this month. Bass said the current proposal lacks clear
guidance and could be bogged down inbureaucracy. She wants to work out a
different plan. It's too late tochange any language for a ballot measure this
year, so the city Council wouldhave to override the veto with ten votes.
Council members are on a long breakthis month and don't meet again until
July thirtieth. In Downtown La,Michael Monks KFI News, a man's been
(09:33):
arrested for allegedly shooting at police nearthe Fashion District in downtown La. The
officers were called in to San Julianin twelfth Streets about ten o'clock last night
about a SHOT's fired call. TheLAPD says that's when they were shot at.
The guy who allegedly did it wasarrested. Police in Fullerton say a
man who charged officers with a knifeand box cutter wanted suicide by cop.
(10:00):
Fullerton police officer Ryan O'Neil says fourofficers fired when Lorenzo Hills charged. The
cell phone was registered to mister Hills, the same cell phone used to make
the nine to one one call thatinitiated the police response. That nine to
one one caller last month asked formultiple officers to respond, you know,
I don't want to know how tohurt anybody where he's there here, he's
been like certain people would be married. Police say a fifth officer fired a
(10:22):
less than lethal sponge gun when thearmed man charged in fuller ten Corbin Carson
kf I News. A new payrollsystem in LA has led to inaccurate paychecks
for hundreds of city workers. Citycouncil and Tim McCosker says, there have
been some issues, but the newsystem is better, but that does not
it does not feel like it too. At least four hundred folks in LAPD
(10:45):
who are civilians working their tails offand who for other reasons we've been talking
about being such a critical part ofour city. The error has impacted about
four hundred police dispatchers. Mcosker saysthe kinks should be worked out after a
couple more pay cycles to camp ateleven sites in the Angelus National Forest may
jump by as much as three hundredpercent. Critics say many won't be able
(11:07):
to afford to camp if rates jumpfrom five dollars to twenty dollars a day
for a campsite. Forest officials sayabout eighty percent of camp site fees are
used to maintain and improve facilities. The Forest Service proposed the increased fees earlier
this month. If approved, theytake effects sometime next year. The US
is sending more military aid to Ukraine. The latest package is worth around two
(11:30):
hundred twenty five million dollars. Pentagonspokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder says the US
will keep supporting Ukraine's war effort untilUkrainian officials are ready to start peace negotiation,
and right now, our focus continuesto be on working with Ukraine to
provide them with what they need todefend their country and defend their sovereignty.
(11:50):
Russia invaded Ukraine in early twenty twentytwo. A lot of Republican lawmakers say
they are against giving any more moneyto Ukraine. The mayor of Paris has
made good on a promise to swimin the Sene River ahead of the twenty
twenty four Olympics. ABC's and Asde la Catera says Mayor and Hidalgo took
the plunge this morning to show theriver is clean enough to host open swimming
(12:11):
competitions. Swimming in the set hasbeen banned for over one hundred years,
but pairs officials had promised to cleanit up in time for the Olympics so
as to hold some events in theriver. The games officially start after opening
ceremonies, which will be held nextFriday, just nine days away. High
levels of E. Coli in theriver recently delayed test events and the Mayor's

Trump's running mate jd Vance is goingto headline tonight's speakers on Day three off
the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The theme for the day is make America
Strong once Again. Trump's going tospeak tomorrow night on the closing night of
the convention. A lawsuit has alreadybeen filed against California's brand new law just
(13:18):
signed by Governor newsom on Monday thatbans schools from notifying parents if their kids
start identifying as transgender. The lawsuitfiled on behalf of the Chino Valley School
District and parents with kids in thepublic school system. The twenty twenty four
Emmy nominations are being announced this morning. The last Emmys were just held in
January. They were pushed back becauseof the actors and Writers' strikes. The
(13:41):
seventy six Emmys will be awarded onSeptember fifteenth. A host for the show
hasn't been announced yet at six ZHOfive. It's handled on the news.
Six people, including two US citizens, have been killed in a luxury hotel
in Bangkok. Police say it wasmost likely cyanide poisoning. Weird, right,
let's say good morning now to thehost of Rich on Tech Saturdays.
(14:03):
Right here on KFI ktlised tech reporterRich Demiro. Rich, I need your
help because it's Amazon Prime Day,and as I've told wake Up Call,
I don't think I've ever found areally good deal on Prime. But you
know where they are. Well, yeah, there's a couple places you can
look. First off, you cango to Amazon dot com slash Prime Day
(14:24):
that's going to have specialized deals, kind of personalized for you, mixed in
with some of the stuff that they'repromoting. We're seeing pretty decent deals this
year on electronics. Those are thebiggest discounts. Clothing, next biggest discounts
home and furniture, computers kind ofnot the best discounts this year nine percent
versus eight percent last year. Anotherplace you can look amy if you want,
(14:46):
is Amazon dot Com slash Buy Again. So here you're going to see
all of this stuff that you've alreadypurchased on Amazon. You know, these
are like the routine things. Youknow, maybe you just need them again
and you want them at a betterprice. So that's going to be a
good place. And the other placeI like to look. I don't know
about you, but I save alot of stuff in my Amazon cart that
(15:09):
I want to buy. It's likeaspirational. I want to get it,
but I don't, and so Ijust leave it lingering in the bottom of
my cart. I check to seeif any of those items were on sale,
and sure enough, yesterday I didplace in order a pretty decent order
for a lot of stuff, becauseso many of the things I've been watching
did actually go on sale. AndI'm looking again today and I'm seeing even
more stuff on sale than I sawyesterday. So I think the deals are
(15:31):
there this year. Okay. Andwhen you say biggest discounts, when you
were talking about clothes and electronics, what kind of discounts are we talking about?
Is it fifteen percent? Is itforty percent? Electronics? We're looking
at about twenty two percent versus fourteenlast year. This is according to Adobe
Analytics, by the way, clothingtwenty percent versus twelve percent, and that
(15:54):
is pretty much in line. Letme see if I can see what my
shirt was. I buy this dressthat I like here, and let's see
how much of a discount it was. Yeah, twenty percent. There you
go. So it's spot on.The other places to look if you're just
looking to spend money, like ifyou just want ideas, there's websites like
(16:15):
slick Deals, deal News. Thoseare two good websites. And then Camel
Camel Camel, which I believe we'vetalked about before. They keep a list
of popular products and top price drops. So if you're just looking for like
something that's really you know, theprice majorly came down, you can check
there as well. So if youdon't need anything, just you know,
(16:37):
close up your computer and you justsaved a lot of money. I know.
Well that's what I usually do whenI go and I look around on
Prime, I'm like, would doI really need any of this? And
like I just did the buy againand I don't. None of the stuff
that I buy is on Well onething that I don't need is on Prime
deal. So but I you knowwhat, there is actually one deal that
Nick Paul Jochini just sent me thismorning. Yeah. I don't know if
(16:59):
you've seen this one, but it'sthe Gab phone, which is normally which
is a kid phone, so itdoesn't have and I think you didn't your
kids use it or something. There'sthere's a couple of brands. There's Gab,
there's Bark, so these are twocompeting phones. Okay, so there
it's but it's a phone that doesn'thave social media on that kind of stuff.
It's just a phone, so maybea good starter phone for a kid.
(17:22):
And normally it's one hundred and ninetynine dollars, but on Prime Day
it's thirty nine to ninety nine.Oh wow, there you go. Now,
before I would get that I wouldcheck. I would take so that
Camel Camel Camel website. You takethe URL, you pop it in there.
So I'm taking the gab phone. And right now it's saying that is
the best price. The cheapest pricebefore that was let's see lowest. Yeah,
(17:48):
it was about one hundred and aboutone hundred dollars, so this is
still way cheaper than before. Sothat's definitely the best price they've offered this
phone at okay. And I alsosaw that there was a pretty good deal
on some Apple AirPods. Have youseen that one? Yeah, the AirPods.
So there's a they're really pushing theair pods quite heavily because you know,
these are like a very simple purchasefor people. So let's see what
(18:11):
we've got here. We've got thethird generation AirPods, which are sort of
like the newest Those are one hundredand nineteen dollars usually one sixty nine.
And then the standard ones. Ooh, I'm not seeing those anymore. They
might have sold out, but thosewere a good price too. But if
you want headphones earbuds, like thisis definitely the day to get them.
(18:33):
I would say check out the Nothingbuds if you're on Android. The Nothing
but Nothing ear are really good andthey're on sale. You can get the
basic ones for eighty dollars and youcan get the higher end ones that are
typically one fifty for one to twentyand I've been testing those and they are
excellent, excellent, excellent for theprice. Yeah, I might have to
check out the Apple iPods because whenI got my new phone, I got
(18:56):
those the Beats whatever, and I'mnot that impressed with them personal thing company.
So it's all going to the sameit's all going to Tim Cook's pocket.
So you're good, Okay, nomatter what. That's good to know.
Okay. AT and T just hada big old hack and U can
you tell us a little bit aboutthat and is it something that we need
(19:17):
to worry about, because it didn'tseem like it shared your information. It
was just kind of tracking calls, correct, So I don't you know,
it just it just goes to showthat there's a lot of information out there
just continuing to, you know, put our information on the web, on
the dark web. This one, thankfully did not get out. So the
hackers got the information, they havenot released it. I'm not sure if
(19:38):
that's because they're waiting until they figureout if they can get some money from
AT and T or what. Butalso the data they got is not that
great. I mean, it doeshave call and text records for like almost
all AT and T cellular customers,so someone would be able to see,
for instance, like who you calledif this information got out, But otherwise
there's no like personal inform, noso security numbers, no dates of birth.
(20:02):
By the way, that was allreleased a couple of months ago with
the other AT and T hack,so it doesn't even matter. It's all
out there anyway. So the onlything is I think it's interesting if you're
curious if your information is out therewith this AT and T if it if
it was breached, you can goto at T dot com slash event,
slash lander and that will tell youif your account was in this compromise,
(20:23):
which I don't think is that bad, but you know, it's just a
matter of time until it is again. Yeah, and does will that track
whether it was compromised the time before? No one No. For that one.
You have to go to have IBeen poned dot com? So have
I been pw n ed dot com? You type in your email address and
it will tell you if your information'sout there. Yes, mine was,
(20:47):
and uh, thank you AT andT for putting all my information out there
on the dark web. Okay,I need to check that one out.
Okay, we've got a new AppleIOEA system that's coming out. Yes,
public beta of iOS eighteen is nowavailable. So if you want all the
latest, greatest fun features on youriPhone, you can download this. But
(21:11):
before you do that, I donot recommend it because Okay, this is
beta software. This is not thefinal software that's coming out in the fall,
usually September. But you would getsupport for better messaging between iPhone and
Android. That's a big one.But that's coming anyway, right, All
this stuff is coming anyway. It'sjust if you want to be like me
and on the cutting edge and liketry this stuff out. You're literally a
(21:34):
tester, a software tester for Apple, a free software tester. So if
you have a secondary device, oryou're just really enthusiastic about trying this stuff
out and you understand the ramifications, which, by the way, if you
install this on your phone, there'sno easy way of going back to the
regular software without erasing your phone.Okay, and you're saying maybe hold off
(21:55):
on it, and why are therejust too many bugs in it? Or
what? There may be bugs, there may not be. You may have
a fine experience. It's just Idon't think for the average person this is
something that you want to put onyour phone because you, again, you
are a tester, if you're techsavvy, if you are cutting edge,
if you understand your way around allthis stuff, fine, go ahead and
do it. I have friends thatdo it. Of course, I've installed
it on a test device. Imay put it on my regular device.
(22:17):
But I think you it's not forthe average person to say, oh,
let me just do a public betaon my phone. I don't think that's
a very good idea. Okay,So basically what you're saying to me is
stay away from that one, Amy. And wait, yeah, I think
the real one's coming out September twentietharound there, So why don't we that's
just a rumor. But I mean, yeah, I think you can.
Wait. You've gone this long,Amy, Well, and I'm not very
(22:37):
tech savvy, so okay, awesome, sas, And you're going to have
lots more to say about all ofthis stuff plus anything tech. Oh,
but you won't be talking about Primebecause it'll be done, but you'll have
new stuff to talk about this weekendbecause you can listen to kfi's Tech Reporter,
the host of Rich on Tech Saturdaysfrom eleven to two right here on
CAFI. You can also follow Rickon Instagram rich on Tech. His website
(23:02):
is richon Tech dot tv. RichThank you so much, thanks for having
me. All Right, I'm gonnago check out a couple of those Prime
deals. All right, talk toyou soon. Anaheim has agreed to pay
two point seventy five million dollars tothe Angels because of a stadium deal linked
to fraud allegations. This does notimpact any essential city services. Anaheim Mayor
(23:23):
Asthley Aiken says settling the Angel's fivemillion dollar claim allows both parties to move
on. This will be a creditagainst money that normally would go to our
enterprise zone for our convention and Sportsand Entertainment department. She says. The
city gets permissioned to build a firestation on land leased by the Angels to
serve the rapidly growing area. Thethree hundred and twenty million dollar deal collapsed
(23:44):
because of a former mayor who pleadedguilty to fraud charges. That were partly
associated with the deal. In Anaheim, Corbin Carson KFI News a proposed ballot
measure that would allow police chief tofire officers if needed could be pulled from
the November ballot. Mayor Bass vetoedit. She said if it passed,
the proposal could create bureaucratic confusion. Now, if the Council doesn't override the
(24:07):
veto, voters will not be allowedto vote on the issue. In November,
NASA says a big boom in thesky over New York was a small
meteor flying thirty eight thousand miles anhour. You expect to see a meteor
at night, not during the day, so this was a rare daylight fireball.
Bill Cook with NASA's Meteoroid Environment Officesaid yesterday's meteor passed over the Statue
(24:30):
of Liberty before disintegrating above New Jersey. People say the boom shook buildings throughout
the five boroughs. Bet it waskind of cool to see. Scary too,
though. California is coming up shorton chargers. One hundred and twenty
nine thousand new charging stations will needto be built every year between now and
twenty thirty to meet Governor Newsom's mandatethat seventy percent of all new cars sold
(24:52):
by that year will need to bezero emissions. A Stanford professor who's written
a brief on California's ev charge policysays that goal is noble but unrealistic.
President Biden is looking to make changesto the Supreme Court. He wants legislation
to establish term limits for justices anda code of ethics. The Congress currently
(25:14):
has no control or authority over theHigh Court, and justices are appointed for
life. The President would need Congressionalapproval to make the changes. The Washington
Post says Biden's also considering pushing fora constitutional amendment to eliminate broad immunity for
presidents. Shohei Otani has become thefirst Dodger in nearly three decades to hit
a home run in the All StarGame. The Dodgers star hit a three
(25:37):
run dinger in the third last nightin Arlington, Texas, but the American
leaguer still went on to beat theNational League five to three. Mike Piazza
was the last Dodger to hit ahome runner home run in the All Star
Game. That was in nineteen ninetysix at six Zho five, It's handle
on the news. Low income rendersrenters in LA are getting a helping hand
to stay in their homes. We'regonna head to Milwaukee for the latest on
(26:02):
the RNC convention, What happened lastnight and what's on tap for tonight with
ABC's Stephen Portnoy. Amy's on it, Aami's on it, AMI's on Itami's
on it. What am I on? I'm on the stream, I'm on
movies, TV shows, documentaries.I'm really enjoying documentaries these days, sometimes
(26:26):
in books, sometimes going to themovie theater. But there's so much content
out there, how do you knowwhat to choose? So I take recommendations
from my friends and family, andthen I also like to share my recommendations
with you, so hopefully save yousome time, keep you away from the
bad stuff, and maybe tune youinto the good stuff. So on Monday,
(26:48):
of course, the former President Trumpannounced that jd Vance was going to
be as vice presidential running mate, and I was like, okay, so
I kind of know who that is, but not really And I like to
find out about as much as youcan about who these politicians are. And
Jade Vance actually has a pretty interestingstory he wrote Hillbilly Elegy, which is
(27:14):
kind of how he grew to fame, and so I thought, oh,
I should probably read the book, because you know, he started with nothing
and then kind of was is aself made guy, and they're saying,
you know, he's really he embodiesthe American dream because he came from nothing
and really made something great of himself. So I thought, well, I
should go and read the book, and so I googled it and I went,
a, ha, even better,it's on Netflix, which I didn't
(27:38):
even remember. But Ron Howard didthe movie called Hillbilly Elegy and it stars
Amy Adams and Glenn Close, andit's about JD. Vance's life in Littletown,
Ohio. He had a mother whowas a drug addict, the woman
he called Mamma, who ended upreally shaping his life and being the person
(27:59):
who gave him kind of the driveto do better and be better was also
obviously a big part of the movie. At first, the movie feels a
little bit contrived. I don't know, it was just weird. It like
I didn't dive in right away andgo, oh, this is going to
be a good movie, but stickwith it because it's very interesting. The
story is solid, and it's mostlyheartbreaking, and it makes me so sad
(28:22):
to know that anyone has to growup in this kind of environment. But
again, because I will tell youit was awful the way that JD.
Vance, even if it's half true, it was awful how he grew up.
But it's also hopeful and it showsyou that if you do have a
good role model or a parental model, or maybe it's going to be a
teacher for you or your kid orsomething, maybe you just need that one
(28:47):
person to help get you back ontrack so you can move on and live
the American dream as it looks likeJD Vance is doing now. Amy Adams
is awful in this movie, butin a really good way. I mean,
like you hate her because you're justlike, what this woman is.
She's just tortured. She's because sheplays his mom. So she's a drug
(29:08):
addict and she's mean and she's nasty, and she does such a good job
with this. Glenn Close is almostunrecognizable again, which is really good because
you're not thinking, oh, there'sGlenn Close, who's playing mamma in this
In this movie, you think it'sJad's mamma. I mean, she just
(29:30):
did an amazing job. So youknow how the story ends. But the
journey is what I think you're goingto watch, whether you're Republican or Democrat,
or think that this was a goodpick for Trump or not a good
pick for Trump, which you know, there's a lot of information coming in
on both sides. But the movieitself and the story itself really really interesting.
(29:53):
If you want to know what shapethe man who's running for a vice
president of the United States, thisis a great movie to watch. It's
called Hillbilly Elegy. It's on Netflix. Let's get back to some of the
stories coming out of the KFI twentyfour hour newsroom speaking of presidential campaigns.
For the sake of our nation,we have to go with Donald Trump.
(30:17):
Nikki Haley has made an appearance atthe Republican National Convention to endorse former President
Trump. She was met with somecheers and some booze last night. She
told the convention her message is simple, you don't have to agree with Trump
one hundred percent of the time tovote for Haley acknowledged the challenges of another
Trump presidency, but argue that thealternative would be really bad for the country.
(30:41):
She says, no president can fixall are of problems alone, and
says it's up to the people toput a side differences and focus on what
unites us. Five Ohio police officersin Wisconsin for the Republican National Convention have
shot and killed a man who hada knife and was in a fight near
the convention. The Columbus Police Departmentand officials in Milwaukee say the fight was
(31:03):
unrelated to the convention. Thousands ofofficers from all over the US are in
Milwaukee to offer extra security this week, including more than sixty from California.
Six men are accused of stealing morethan three hundred guns from stores across southern
California. Federal prosecutors say the gunsare being sold on the black market and
turning up during unrelated criminal investigations. The guys are accused of stealing the guns
(31:26):
from nine stores since October. DeniseGertz, who owned Chaparl Coin and gut
and Marietta, says the forty threeguns stolen from her store were uninsured.
I'm going to take all our gunsales profits for the next year to recover
from what they took from us.The guys were charged yesterday. They're most
recently accused of stealing more than eightyguns from a store in Orange Blake Trolly
(31:48):
ky if I News. The searchis underway for a humpback whale entangled in
a net. A photographer captured footageof the thirty to thirty five foot whale
with a thick rope wrapped around itstail over the weekend off Palasberty's estates.
A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration teamis now trying to locate the whale.
Captain Christian Bats of Harbor Breeze Cruisessays the whale could die if they can't
(32:10):
find it and get the rope offits tail. Okay, yesterday we told
you about what is being called theworst national anthem ever, Oh the of
the that's Ingrid Andres And she sangthat before the Major League Baseball home run
(32:36):
derby derby earlier this week. Soshe's just been skewered for this performance,
rightfully so. And she put outa post on social media to own up
to it. She said, I'mnot going to be Eschue. She said
I was drunk last night. Shesays, I'm checking myself into a facility
to get the help I need. That was not me. She apologizes to
(32:58):
Major League Baseball, all the fans, and the country that she loves so
much for that rendition. She says, I'll let you know how rehab is.
I hear it's super fun. That'sthe definite pr spin what that she's
going into rehab. Yes, everybodyhas a soft spot for addiction, and
you know, well but maybe,I mean maybe, but I just feel
(33:22):
like I have friends who went torehab from Nashville. They did say it
was fun. But I'm glad she'sgoing to do it, so good for
her. We'll see. She wasobviously not in her right mind when she
sang that song. More illegal immigrantsare crossing into the US in San Diego
than anywhere else in the US.The numbers have dropped more than twenty percent
(33:45):
in the last month, but twentyfive thousand people still cross the border in
San Diego in June. Illegal immigrantsare now being dropped off directly at nonprofits
like Catholic charities. A mom anddad in Apple Valley have been arrested for
allegedly posing their one year old tofentanel. The baby was taken to the
hospital on Monday after the exposure buthas since been released. The parents are
(34:07):
facing charges of child cruelty. Genz is using TikTok for health advice.
A Zing Coach poll shows fifty sixpercent of gen z ars look to TikTok
for wellness, diet and fitness advice. Over a third say they used the
app as their main form of healthadvice. Four and tens say they turn
(34:29):
to TikTok because it's free. Twentytwo percent say it's because it's quick.
We're just minutes away from handle. On the news this morning, it's not
all koumba Yat the RNC, MattGates and Kevin McCarthy apparently got into it
a bit yesterday. Bill's going totell you all about that. Speaking of
the RNC, let's say good morningto ABC's Stephen Portnoy's. Stephen, last
night was make America Safe Again themed. Lots of speakers, What was the
(34:53):
message, how'd they do well?Look? I think the key takeaway is
that it was basically rival tonight.Certainly make America Safe Again was the theme,
and you heard the powerful and painfultestimony of people who have lost their
loved ones to crime, drug addiction. But setting that on the table,
You also had the speeches from peoplewho ran against Donald Trump in twenty sixteen
(35:16):
and twenty twenty four who came tothis convention to hail their party's nominee Ted
Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ron DeSantis, and the headline grabbing Nicki Haley's speech
months ago on the stump, NickiHaley called Donald Trump unhinged, toxic,
said chaos follows him wherever he goes, but here in Milwaukee last night,
(35:37):
Haley said that another term of Bidenand Harris would be worse. So she
said, for the sake of ournation, we have to go with Donald
Trump. She argued to fellow Republicanswho voted for her, you don't have
to agree with Trump one hundred percentof the time to vote for him.
And she said she's here because, quote, we have a country to save.
(35:58):
It reminded me the lineup for lastnight of Doris current Goodwin's book Team
of Rivals about Abraham Lincoln and howhe brought all people who ran against him
and put him on his cabinet. And that's been also sort of a you
know, I remember from the earliestdays of the Trump presidency. That's kind
of sort of how he wanted it. He liked the idea of people working
(36:21):
for him engaging in amongst themselves abattle of you know, debates, and
it was leaks and recriminations and itwas a bit messy, but Trump liked
presiding over it. This is abit different, I think, in the
sense that you know, what he'sdone is he's brought to this convention those
who are willing to demonstrate their loyalty, fealty, allegiance to him. There
(36:45):
are plenty of Republicans who were notin the hall. Think of it,
Chris Christie, met Romney, thebushes. I mean, these are people
who are of the Republican Party,of I would say of old, but
it was really just a few yearsago. And what's the most striking observation
to me I've covered several of theseis you probably would have guessed so much
(37:07):
of these things are staged in away that is formulaic. There are the
speeches, they are the videos, there's the music for the house band.
There are the delegates on the floorwith the tags around their necks. I
mean, this quadrennial event has beengoing on in this country for one hundred
and seventy years, something like that. But what's different here is the fact
(37:29):
that the party itself has so rapidlychanged and unremarkable encapsulation of this was on
Monday in the role Call of theStates. The Republican leader in the United
States Senate is a man named MitchMcConnell, and he represented the Commonwealth of
Kentucky. As he said that hisstate's votes would go to Donald Trump.
As soon as that visage of McConnellflashed up on the screen, enormous booze
(37:52):
filled the hall. The delegates ofthe Republican Party to their national convention booing
their party's leader in the United SlimeState Senate. What a demonstration of how
much this party has changed. Yeah, well it has changed, for sure,
and who knows for the better forthe worse. I guess we'll find
out. But the other thing Ithought was really interesting earlier this week was
(38:15):
that they was on the first nightthat they had the head of the Teamsters.
Well that's also true. I mean, look, and it was really
that was a very interesting diyamic.Donald Trump has his own electoral ambition,
you know, reasons for rationale forputting a labor leader on the stage,
I don't know. To what extentthe Republican Party leadership or Trump himself reviewed
(38:37):
the text of that speech, becauseit wound up being a fierce defense of
organized labor and collective bargaining rights,a slam at corporatism and particular companies Amazon
lift Uber were specifically invoked. Itwas an incredible speech to hear at a
Republican convention, and you have towonder whether it'll there's any kind of through
(38:58):
line to the polses that this presentwould put forward. And not with respect
to you how he speaks and whathe says, but what about the National
Labor Relations Board under Donald Trump? Is it really going to issue favorable rulings
towards organized labor? Or would aTrump NLRB seek to undermine the rights of
organized labor. That is something thatDemocrats are going to talk about, surely
(39:22):
at their convention in a month. But between now and then, you have
this really interesting programming here where it'snot what you'd expect, and that makes
it very interesting. I think it'sbeen fascinating and I can't wait to watch
the Democratic National Convention, but Ido think it's been very interesting so far.
So what are we going to seetonight? Tonight, James Dave Advance,
(39:47):
who turns forty two weeks from Friday, still unknown to most of America,
makes something of a national debut. Now, if you've read Hillbilly Elogy,
or you maybe have seen the moviewe just talked about jd Vance Hunt,
Well, if you've seen jd.Vance on cable news, then you
know who he is. But mostAmericans haven't done any of those things.
And so this is a debut forhim. He'll make his case for Donald
(40:07):
Trump's reelection and for his own ascensionto the second highest office in the land.
So is there any indication that hismessage might be a kinder, gentler
kind of thing, like because Trumpsaid after what happened over the weekend of
the assassination attempt, he ripped uphis speech and wrote a different one that's
more about unity. Do we knowif Advance is leaning toward following that or
(40:29):
do we have any indication? Ihave no idea. Okay, and there'll
be really look, Democrat said that, I'm beyond perfectly honest because few days
ago, not even he knew hewas going to be the nominee. So
let's see what he has to offer. Yeah, I will say this the
Democrats are already trying to paint aJD Van with a certain bush by point
(40:50):
what he said in an Evyes's interviewyou in februarm On this week, George
Stephanopolo, this was asked, whatif you were vice president on January sixth
of twenty twenty one, would youhave done what wanted you to do by
setting aside the electoral votes from Pennsylvania? And he said yes vand said,
if I had been vice president,I would have told the states like Pennsylvania,
Georgia and so many others that weneeded to have multiple slates of electors.
(41:13):
That idea of multiple slates of electorshas resulted in criminal charges in some
of these states, and so Democratsare pointing that out. Yes, okay,
well it's gonna like like we've beentalking about it. It's interesting to
watch, and I'll be watching tonight. And I appreciate your comments and your
thoughts on this today. You betall right, Thanks Steven. It is
